In this, my final message as Commodore, I find it
essential to express my gratitude to all members of
the Diversey Yacht Club Family for allowing me
this opportunity to serve you. Spending time as a
Flag Officer has been one of the most rewarding
and challenging experiences of my life. I would
like to thank Vice Commodore - Captain Jamie
Kost, Rear Commodore - Rob Martucci, all the
Board Members and appointed Officials who
worked long and hard to help me make this year, in
so many ways, a record breaking year at Diversey.

As another fantastic boating season comes to a close, the Rear
Commodore would like to extend his sincere Thanks for all the Yacht
Club Staff that keep the Club in great shape and keep the Members
happy. The Members deserve a hearty Thanks as well for all they
contribute during the year to ensure that the DYC is an enjoyable place
to be with Family and Friends. As Rob finishes his 2012 duties as Rear
Commodore, he will be preparing for the 2013 season when he ascends
to the position of Vice Commodore under the direction of the incoming
Commodore, Captain Jamie Kost. The Members are looking forward to
another stellar year at DYC with Captain Jamie and Rob positioned at
the helm.

Winter Storage Information for 2012
It would be easy to assume that all of our Member have all their Winter Storage plans laid out and ready to go once they
decide that its time to haul the old boat out of the water. But just in case there are a few of you that have procrastinated for
another year…again, there are still some choices out there for you. You can check the Chicago Harbors web site
(www.chicagoharbors.info). There is still storage at the 31 st street and Montrose Harbor sites. Montrose is outdoor storage
for boats up to 45’. Cost is $5.50psf and shrink wrap is $2psf. Boat stands are included at no additional charge. 31 st street
harbor has Indoor and Outdoor storage. Outdoor is $5.50psf and Indoor is $10psf. Indoor still has some spots left as of last
month. Both locations are fenced with 24 hour security. There are also some boat yards along the river that have storage
left. When they quote you prices, make sure you ask what is included with that price. Some boat yards charge extra for haul
out, power washing the bottom and tripods/blocks. There are also quality locations outside the Chicago area that you can
store your boat. Winthrop Harbor is the northern most point in Illinois which is about 45 nautical miles north and there are
some spots in NW Indiana that are easy to get to at about 20 nautical miles away.
Once you have your storage plans in place, all you have left to do is pilot your boat to its winter resting point. October will
run by quickly and the good weather are becoming difficult to find. And with most people relying only on weekends to try
and accomplish this, your opportunities become even less. When it comes time to actually take your boat to the marina/boat
yard, you have two choices: do it yourself or hire a Captain to take it for you. There are licensed Captains available “for
hire” that will take your boat to the winter storage yard and document the trip so that you know your boat arrives safely. For
a nominal fee, these Captains have the time to make the trip during the week when most people don’t. There are still a lot of
boats in the harbors which means that all those owners are going to be trying to use the same few weekends left in October
to put their boats away. That usually means long weekend lines at the boat yards taking up your day. The Captains can take
your boat during the week when traffic is minimum. One source of finding local Captains is Windy City Yachts
(www.windycityyacts.com). There you can find numerous licensed Captains to choose from and resources to locate others.
There are also quite a few Captains within the DYC that might be willing to assist you with your piloting needs. Ask around
and you might just find someone inside the Club that could help you.

EDITOR’S CORNER
Greetings Members and Boaters of the DYC.
As the 2012 boating season draws to a close, I am compelled to look back on another fantastic year
at Diversey Harbor and the DYC. This was my first full year at Diversey Harbor and the DYC. I have
met so many wonderful people on the docks and in the Yacht Club. I can say, without hesitation, that the people that I have
met this past year on the docks and in the Yacht Club, have all welcomed my Brother and I into their Club and into their lives
with the greatest of warmth and sincerity. I feel fortunate to have made the friends that I have this year. I can truly say that
my Brother and I feel at home in Diversey Harbor and the DYC. It is with great pleasure and honor that I am writing this
Editors note.
It was surprise last year when, then Vice Commodore Kevin, approached me to be on the Board for the 2012 season. I was
not aware of what duties were in store for me, but I jumped at the opportunity to be a part of the Yacht Club. Being
responsible for the Newsletter was a bit more overwhelming than I was prepared for. The Yacht Club Newsletter is a time
honored tradition amongst yacht clubs. It is the single, greatest source of information for the Club to keep its Members
informed of all events upcoming and past. It is meant to inform as well as entertain. To say this year was a difficult rookie
year for me would be an understatement. While I did put together a May issue, the first official newsletter didn’t go out until
August. I find that unacceptable and I am sure there are many Members that feel the same way. The fault is mine and mine
alone. As I said in the August issue, I have tried to redeem myself with the Waterline issues that followed. With the end of
the season upon us, it appears that this will most likely be the last issue until Spring.
With the Installation Dinner coming up on the 20th, a new Commodore will be appointed along with Flag Officers and Board.
As of now, I do not know if I will be part of the DYC Board for the 2013 season and as such, this could be my last Editors
note. I now understand the true nature, scope and importance behind this newsletter. It has been a tough road, but I have
enjoyed it immensely. If my fate is to not continue as Editor, I must say that I have enjoyed writing the Waterline and
documenting a small part of Diversey Yacht Club’s history. Should I be chosen to stay on the Board and continue as Editor,
you all have my pledge that I will not fail twice. Either way, I am looking forward to working on the many new friendships
that I have made in DYC and becoming a valued Member and valued Friend to all.
Continue to eat, drink and be merry at the Yacht Club. Come out to see the great entertainment and most of all, enjoy your
time at the Club and cherish the good life that we are fortunate enough to lead.

Contributions from Captains within the
Diversey Harbor Yacht Club
We are nearing the end of another year on the water at Diversey Harbor. Mother Nature blessed us with some of the
best weather in the last few years. The sun came out early in May and held on as long as possible into October. So
many weekends with perfect weather created quite a bit of activity in the Harbor. The DYC Gas Dock had one of its
best years in recent history and Ice sales were through the roof. The continuous warm weather brought out many of our
boaters to fill the weekends with lots of activity for the harbor and the Yacht Club. The DYC had great turn-outs for
Children’s Day as well as the many Saturday’s and Sunday’s on the Patio listening to the excellent entertainment
arranged by the DYC Entertainment Director, Eileen Minkoff. Let’s hope that next years weather generates the same
amount of traffic to our harbor.
And speaking of the Harbor…..it is something that we all take advantage of and sometimes think little about. Below
are some pictures of the Harbor Clean Up Day organized by Commodore Kevin. While the few hours spent removing
trash from the bottom yielded some interesting items, it was only a small fraction of what is down there. It would be
nice to rally the Parks Department along with Westrec Marinas and the City to do a more to clean the harbor bottom,
but a more realistic scenario is the DYC doing it every year. If we watch what goes into the water, we don’t have to
worry about taking it out.

As an Editors side note, I do want to acknowledge

all that you do and all that you put up with. Keep up the
