June 2013 - Diversey Yacht Club
SEPT 06 June 2013 THE DIVERSEY YACHT CLUB Captain Jamie Kost Flag Officers Commodore Captain Jamie Kost Vice-Commodore Robert Martucci Rear-Commodore Kathy Abdul Officials Ginny Procuniar - Board Secretary Randy Schmidt*-Board Treasurer/Judge Advocate It feels like summer as I write this article, although just a few days ago it felt like winter! Let's hope that the good weather continues. Thanks to all the rain we have received, our gas dock is up and running. Diversey continues to offer a low gas price, possibly the lowest, for 93 octane fuel. We had a wonderful Derby party, thanks to Rob and Cheryl and our first grill night was a big success. Our next one will be on June 14 and the grill will be ready and waiting for you. We have several events coming up, Dueling Pianos, a fleet cruise to Hammond and many more. Please check the website for all our events. If you do not get our weekly email updates be sure to sign up for them. I'd like to welcome all our new members to the club! I know you'll enjoy it and I look forward to meeting each and everyone of you. I'd also like to say thank you to the Board of Directors for all the hard work they are doing to keep our club running so smoothly. Of course Gus and Carmen also. Get out on the lake and enjoy your boats and then come back and enjoy the club! Happy and safe boating! This Spring we started another entertainment tradition with our First Annual Kentucky Derby Party. The event was a success, and with it came many outfits and hats that were worn in true Derby fashion. Be on the lookout for pictures from our Historian Art Koegel. We had games and raffles for all to enjoy with prizes donated once again from Larry & Denise Watanabe complements of West on North and Celtic Crossing. Now we can look forward to a summer full of fun events and entertainment that will keep our house rocking. Based on your feedback Sunday entertainment on the patio is back with more days and will continue to keep the DYC charm alive through the end of our weekends. Also, by popular demand Friday Night Grill Nights will happen the second Friday of every month throughout the season. I hope to see you all out by the raging grill and while you are there don't forget to check out the new ice cream freezer in the Galley. By the time this news letter goes to press we will have had an expanded Membership Drive Weekend complete with an Open House on both Saturday and Sunday. The Event featured bands on both days for the first time....we hope this brings new faces and energy to the club! Happy Boating! *denotes Past Commodore 2601 N CANNON DRIVE CHICAGO IL 60614 www.DiverseyYacht Club.com PAGE I EDITOR’S CORNER Hello DYC and Welcome to the start of the 2013 Boating Season! While Mother Nature’s shower activity has been causing a steady rise in the lake levels, She has not provided many days of sunshine and warm weather to get us excited about being on the water. This year has been the complete opposite of the weather last year. Last April we saw average temps in the 70’s and 80’s for May. Not so lucky this year. Not to worry. The warmer weather will be here soon and the boats will be leaving the harbor to enjoy the lake and magnificent skyline. Take this time to give your boats a good cleaning so you will be ready to shine once the sun comes out. Don’t forget to take advantage of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary boat inspections that are being offered to all boaters. This is a good way to make sure you have all the necessary equipment on board to in case of emergencies, but also to make sure your boat is in good working order. Safety First when on the water with Friends and Family. Fair Winds and Following Seas Upcoming Events for June and July Studio 54 Disco Party with Rhythm City: Saturday, June 1st at 8pm. Rhythm City will be playing the best of Motown, Soul, Disco and 80’s House/Tecno Fleet Cruise: June 7-9. This is the first Fleet Cruise of the Summer and it will be an easy one to the Hammond Marina in Indiana. It is 12 nautical miles from Chicago and is next to the Horseshoe Casino. The Horseshoe is, by far, the nicest casino in the area with plenty of gambling and top shelf restaurant Binion’s Steak House. The marina has a gas dock, pump out facilities and 24 hour security. There is also the Hammond Yacht Club (www.hammondyachtclub.com). Ask our Fleet Captain, Bob Albert, for details on the trip. Diversey Grill Night: Friday, June 14th at 6pm. Join your friends and dock neighbors out by the raging grills to cook your desired fare. This party is BYOM (bring your own meat; steak, chicken, fish, lamb, etc.). Call Gus Anton at (312) 320-7277 to reserve your table. Gus will also be providing all the usual side dishes for $8 per person (salad, beans, potatoes, grilled veggies, etc. Subject to change). Dueling Pianos with Guest Bartender Night: Saturday, June 15th. Come and enjoy an evening of fun music with dueling pianos and our mystery guest bartender. This event may be rescheduled in the event that the Chicago Blackhawks make it to the Stanley Cup Finals. Chicago In Water Boat Show: June 13-16. This will be held again at the 31st Street Harbor. Come by Water or Land because there is NO Parking Available for this event! All parking is off site with free shuttle service. Transient slips are available for daily or hourly use. Please contact 31st Harbor Master at 312-225-6464. Father’s Day at the Club: Bring your Dad’s by the club for a Father’s Day Feast prepared by Mr. Gus Anton and his staff. Gus also has something special for all the Dad’s in attendance. There will be a Belly Dancer entertaining us for the afternoon. I don’t know if it will be the same dancer that Gus has had in the past, but it was always a good show and a touch of the Mediterranean Culture. Please call Gus for details and reservations (312) 320-7277 General Membership Meeting: Thursday, June 20th at 7pm. The Board highly encourages ALL Members to attend the General Membership meetings so that the Board can hear directly from the Members as to what the Club is doing right, what it is doing wrong and how the Board can improve the Club in order to better serve its Members and attract new ones. The Members are vital to the Club’s survival and during these difficult economic times, the Club can use all the advice it can get to make sure it stays on the right track to prosperity. Pride Parade: Saturday, June 30th. Always one of the biggest parties in Chicago and Diversey Harbor. DYC always draws a good group to watch the parade. DYC Members will be assembling across the street from Duffy’s (420 ½ W. Diversey) around Noon. NOTE: the parade ends at Diversey and Cannon Drive and the grassy area between the harbor and Cannon drive will be FILLED with post parade activities. SO, if you plan to drive to the Harbor, you better get there before they close the street or bring your car the night before and leave it there. This is NOT a joke. Once the street is closed (approximately 9am-10am) they usually do not let cars through even if you have a harbor pass. So, plan accordingly. Fleet Cruise: July 5-7. POSTPONED TO THE WEEKEND OF AUGUST 2-4. This is the annual trip to South Haven, Michigan. South Haven has always been one of our favorite ports of call. The municipal marina is an excellent facility within walking distance of the many attractions that South Haven has to offer: shopping, dining, nightlife and, of course, their beautiful beaches. Contact Fleet Captain, Bob Albert, to sign up and join the Diversey Fleet in crossing the lake and invading Michigan. You must make your own reservations at South Haven Marina. Call the marina direct at 269-637-3171, have your credit card ready and tell them you are with the Diversey Harbor Yacht Club. Venetian Night at 31st Street Marina: Saturday July 27th at dusk. The Theme for this year is “Rocking in the Harbor”. It will be held again at 31st street harbor. The DYC will need volunteers to help prepare the decorations for the boat and as support staff to actually apply the decorations to the boat once in the harbor. Contact any of the Flag Officers to ask how you can be a part of the DYC efforts to capture back to back titles for best boat. The DYC won last years Venetian Night because of all the hard work, ingenuity, enthusiasm and creativity that went into last years entry. So, be a part of it this year when the DYC is a repeat winner. 2601 N. Cannon Dr., Chicago, IL. 60614 www.diverseyyachtclub.com Page 2 If Mother Nature would cooperate, we could call this summer; maybe in a week or so. Keep an eye out for two Coast Guard events. A big, free inspection weekend is set for June 8th. If you miss this opportunity, contact any DYC Coast Guard Member to make arrangements. Additionally, next month the Coast Guard will be offering classes on Monday and/or Tuesday nights. Keep a look-out for information posted in the Yacht Club. We still need your help for the Children's Party. It takes about 10 people to work together to make this event work. So, pleasae consider helping out – if only for on hour or two. Your voices do count, so please attend the next General Membership Meeting which is scheduled for Thursday, June 20th at 7pm. You can let us know how we are doing. Happy Boating! The Benefits of Membership While many of the current Members understand the positive aspects of being a Member of the Diversey Yacht Club, here are some things that some current, new and prospective Members may not know. Many of the DYC Members operate businesses in the Chicagoland area and have shown their generosity over the years by donating raffle items to the various parties the DYC has during the year. The revenue from the Sponsor adds go directly towards the cost of producing the newsletter. It is the Club’s sincere hope that we can obtain the right amount of Sponsors to cover the entire cost of producing the newsletter without being a distraction to the overall appearance to the newsletter. We estimate that 8-10 Sponsors will be enough to cover the annual newsletter expense. If you wish to place an add in future issues, please contact the Editor at [email protected] At this time, the DYC would like to acknowledge our newest Sponsors: Suarez Electric Company and Don’s Dock Box Tables. In several cases, these Sponsors are also DYC Members. As we add Sponsors to the roster, it is encouraged that you take a look and see if any of the Sponsors offer services that you may be interested in. If you are in the market for a service that a Sponsor provides, we hope that they will be your first stop. The newsletter will have 3 more new Sponsors for the July issue. Add space is filling up better than expected, so if you want to be a Sponsor please send a message to [email protected] 2601 N.
