July and August saw many successful events come and go at our Diversey Yacht Club. Venetian Night was a great success with our entry coming in 2nd. A huge thank you goes out to Vice Commodore, Captain David Suarez for letting us use his boat Southbound Soirée. Dave put in a ton of work on this project and in the end, the results were a highly professional look and incredibly slick presentation of the Chicago Bulls Six-Peat, complete with Benny the Bull, opposing players and cheerleaders. A big zigga-zagga Diversey Cheer goes out to Val and Toni, Lisa Jacobs, Mark Klym, Jim Procuniar, Jr., Ludwig Erdbeer, all the other members contributing all their time and effort too numerous to mention in this column. The month of August also brought Diversey a very successful kids party. Thank you Nancy Moreno, Chairperson. Also thank you to Gary Fogarty, Tom Drew, Kathy Lesser and everyone else for all their help in making this a very special event for all the children. I hope everyone had fun Air Show weekend. Gus and Nick continue to turn out excellent food at the Galley, so be sure to stop by and order something. Rick Helland has done a great job with entertainment this year, making the Yacht Club bar an especially fun place to be on the weekends. Remember this is your Club, so come on in and use it. Happy boating! www.DiverseyYacht Club.com PAGE # I SEPT 06 Message From ___________________________________________________ Betty Klym Its good to be back. How could I refuse the offer to fill the position when I received such an overwhelmingly warm reception and the opportunity to work with such an enthusiastic group of people that are on the board this year. Cudos to Denise and Dave for doing such an excellent job. I realize the workload has been tremendous. The club is looking great. The galley is running smoothly. Everyone seems very pleased with the service that our galley operators, Gus and Nick are providing to them. Keep up the good work. The mini burgers seem to be flying off the menu as fast as they can serve them. We now find ourselves immersed in the middle of boating season 2007 and the pace has picked up a notch. The Pink Freud party was a huge success and we had many members in attendance. The bottles were shaking on the bar, but our club remains intact and ready for the next big bash. Rick Helland, our Entertainment Director, has many more parties on the calendar. Be sure to check the DYC website, add your name to the email list for updates, or simply take a walk inside the club and check out the posters on the wall for upcoming events. We don’t want anyone left out when we are having such a good time. Thanks to everyone who participates, especially Sandy Minsky, for updating our member board. Its all the big and small efforts put forth by our members that keep this club running and make it a worthwhile place to be. We need to remember that we are a club and the use and enjoyment of it should ultimately be preserved for the members. Participation is always welcome and encouraged. Happy Boating ! See you in the club, on the dock or on the lake. www.DiverseyYachtClub.com Page 2 SEPT 06 EDITOR ’S CORNE R Hallelujah!! The Independence Day Holiday is behind us and at last count we were still all here to talk about it. Congratulations and my sympathy to those of us who had to gamble with our boats and lives in that traffic jam of frantic, inexperienced boaters who piled up at the entrance to our harbor. I am sure everyone knows who I’m talking about, those small open-bow and mini speed boats that all ramped in and showed no courtesy or respect as they cut in between us, behind us, above us and below us. Only after Luke felt the situation was beyond his control did he put a call into the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard reasoned that if they would simply park their boat in the middle of the mess and turn their lights on, everyone would magically behave. Wrong! Instead of safety checking us for the 900th time it would have been much more appropriate timing for the Coasties to get more assertive and pull over, or pull out of line, the rampers that seem to think we could stop or turn our cruisers on a dime. In this issue the Waterline Staff will continue to provide some informative, timely and fun facts relating to our boats, our water and ourselves. Good luck to all who traveled to Venetian Night and big thank you to our Vice Commodore, Dave Suarez, and everyone else who helped, with the coordinating and construction of our Club’s entry. That was when gas cost $1.50 a gallon, but times change, as do gas prices. Now we only do a few fleet cruises a year, and then usually to a close and familiar port. This year we chose Racine. My son, Jim, and I left Diversey Harbor late Friday morning with Fleet Captain Bob Albert and Victoria, Polar Bear, and Val and Toni Badikov, Seahawk. The weather and the water were ideal. We were in no hurry as we headed north, stopping at Winthrop Harbor for sandwiches and Margaritas (the first of many). When we arrived at Reef Point Marina, Don Shatner and JoAnn, Heatmen, and Jeff and Renee Poczatek, Hakuna My Yacht Ahh, were there waiting for us. Others drove up in cars and between them and our passengers we had about 20 people in our group. Friday night we did the town. A twenty-five cent trolley ride delivered us to the Yardarm for their famous Fish Fry. Afterwards we visited the Charthouse and local places on Main Street (more Margaritas) and then back to the Spinnaker (formerly “The Docks”) at Reef Point for a nightcap. It has been several years since we’ve visited Racine and by all accounts things went well for us this year. Our fleet captain, Bob Albert, boarded the Racine Trolley in broad daylight, wearing no Continues on Page 8 HOME PRIDE Carpet Cleaning Shampoo and Steam Cleaning Upholstery and Leather Specialist Commercial and Residential Carpet Spot Dyeing Specializing in Boat Carpeting and Headers Jim (773) 239-1933 Pager (773) 936-6774 www.DiverseyYachtClub.com Page 7 FLEET CRUISE – RACINE (Continued from Page 7) By: Jim Procuniar disguise, and was allowed on. Apparently the trolley company has decided to let bygones be bygones and everything is either forgiven or forgotten. The same held true at the Charthouse where not a single DYC member was forcibly ejected. On Saturday Brad and Sharon Helbig, Done Deal, and Kirt Mika, Panty Puller, joined us in Racine. The day was spent at poolside with Don and JoAnn hosting one of their famous fleet cruise BBQ’s (that Shatner guy sure knows how to grill a good burger). At the pool we bumped into several other DYC members both past and present who were just passing through for the weekend. What a great day! Eat, drink (more Margaritas) and be merry. Did anyone not get sun burned? After the BBQ we launched Jeff’s inflatable and went up the Root River. Great ride! One of the highlights of the trip. We went up the river for miles until we ran aground. On the return Val Badikov discovered that he could speak Hawaiian. This discovery came shortly before he fell out of the inflatable into the river. On Sunday some boats returned to Diversey while others headed north to other destinations. Again, the trip back was ideal. I remember now why Racine has always been and still is one of my favorite ports o’ call. The photos from the Racine fleet cruise can be seen in the “Photo Gallery” at www.DiverseyYachtClub.com PAGE 8 Nov 06 HUGE THANKS to Mario & Nancy Moreno for our great Club Mural.
