Racine Yacht Club Commodore’s Report
Thank you for reading any of the past 47 installments of the
Commodore’s monthly submission to the Reef Point. This is
good old number 48, and the last of the series.
It’s been a four year tenure and the end is bittersweet. I enjoyed
the job. I have said it has been “the best job I’ve ever had.” Most
times I was sincere and at other times it was an oath sworn with
some level of irony. So today, I will admit that I have enjoyed
the job… It has given me the opportunity to help our Board of
Directors guide the Club in the manner that would sustain our
existence. That fact is especially poignant as we approach our
second century. Secondly, it has broadened my exposure to
many members who I would not normally have had contact.
And, for the most part, that is enjoyable. Even the criticisms are
really just an opportunity to understand the perspective of a
member and to explain how and why the Board operates in the
manner in which it does.
From my seat at the head of the table, I am absolutely blessed
with the wisdom and efforts of each and every member of our
Board. They are a dedicated group of individuals who sit down
on the second Thursday with the sole purpose of guiding our
Club in the right direction. I thank them for their efforts and I
look forward to their continued dedication. There are virtually
no decisions that are taken lightly by this group of committed
individuals… and many times they are not of one mind. Of
course, that’s where good decisions come from, varied
perspectives. This has been a great experience shared with a
great group. Thanks!
Some notes to Gregg Henning about the position of Commodore:
Generally a good job with a great parking space. (For those of
you who like the parking space, it would be good to know that
it IS A JOB.) It’s just a job with an assigned parking space. The
job starts every day. You are reminded of the job every morning
shortly after awakening, or sometimes in the middle of the
night if the alarm goes off. This was explained to me by my
predecessor, Commodore Mark Rode. That’s because it’s a half
million dollar business with a couple million dollars of assets.
All officers are generally “on the job” anytime they are on the
property and I believe this is especially true for the Commodore.
I have remarked that there is “no problem too small for the
Commodore.” The fact is, what appears to be a small problem
is really perceived by the members as significant. So, no toilet
paper in the lady’s head really is a problem. The sewage lift
pump flooding the parking lot really is a problem. Shaky finger

piers don’t enhance the docking experience. So, from a practical
perspective, every problem presented is best handled by a fast
resolution. The day-to-day problem approaches require prompt
resolutions on the order of “ready-fire-aim” as opposed to
scheduling committee meetings, study groups, and Gantt
charts. Open the closet and get out more toilet paper or run up
to the Pig. It isn’t rocket science.
For future reference I offer the following: Just because you may
NOT be enjoying your meal doesn’t mean that you should
make it a point to explain that to the new Commodore while he
is attempting to enjoy his meal. Secondly, if one might choose
to discuss a problem/issue/concern with the Commodore, it
would be great to also offer a solution. It helps keep the issue in
perspective. Keep Gregg sane.
Winners and losers, in no particular order. Most recently, our
recapturing of Regatta was by most perspectives, a success.
This year it was sort of ad hoc… I think we should return to the
point of having a Regatta Chair and a committee to handle this.
I think that the rise in Lake Michigan water levels was a great
occurrence this year. Turns out that the rainfall and outflow are
nearly record for the last eighty years of record keeping. Which
leads us to the dredging project. The 2012 fall dredging was a
necessity and it was a hard pill to swallow but the new levels
just make us a deeper harbor. I think that if we hadn’t dredged,
we would have seen a 50% decrease in the pier revenues in
2013. And for the last season, we were at 90% capacity. As the
second largest income item and the fact that there are not many

RYC News in Brief
From the October Board meeting minutes:
Treasurer Frank Randall presented the
September financial statement with the
comment that September was a good
month. The YTD income is now nearly even
with the budget.
Water levels in Lake Michigan/Huron
continue to rise slightly, with the current
level approximately three feet higher than
when we dredged.
Commodore Charlie Manning introduced
and welcomed newly nominated Board
members Amy Cermak, Pam Jobson and
John Lyon. Nominations for open Board
positions will be taken at the next General
meeting.
Office Manager Kim Shortess reported the
new credit card processing program has
been implemented but she needs more
information from members in order to use it
effectively. She is sending out a letter to
affected members requesting the additional
account information. The information will
allow her to process credit card transactions
at a lower fee to the Club. Discussion
followed.
Rear Commodore John Stanley reported
two Junior class boats are in the shop for
cleaning and shrink wrapping. He plans to
work up a policy over the winter to control
use of this equipment.
MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY’S REPORT:
Shortess presented the membership status
change requests in Ponsonby’s absence.
STATUS CHANGES:

INACTIVE TO RESIGNED: Kevin and
Jackie Kluck
All requests were approved. With the
above changes, and the recent passing of
Life member, Lillian Rondone, the member
total is 270.
PIER DIRECTOR’S REPORT: Pier Director
Lukow presented a written report:
Many of us have witnessed the
magnitude of northeaster induced winter
seiche. That’s why we need at least a 12”
buffer between harbor ice and horizontal
pier structures. We’re not going to make it.
The Army Corp of Engineers predicts a 6”
drop between now and the end of December.
A dry fall could save us some work but it’s
unlikely.
Special thanks to Jared Shortess, who
between the time I write this and the time
it’s read at the GMM will have covered for
me and the dock on Dock and Yard day.
Lukow plans to post a notice to west
pier slip holders regarding end of season
maintenance. The notice will also be
included in the current eBlasts.
Yard Director Jack Landwehr presented a
written report:
A list of Yard Projects is available for
viewing on the Work or Pay Board. RYC
Members are encouraged to review the list
of Fall Yard projects and choose which
project best matches their physical abilities
and time schedule. Several Yard Projects can
be done after Yard and Dock Day.
Most aspects of the Yard are in great
condition. Parking lot surface remains in
good condition. Winter plowing is set up
with Randy as in the past several years.
With high water level, we need to look
at the canoe rack to make sure it is stable.
No visible evidence indicates an issue, but
the rack needs to be inspected.
RYC swing set was moved for the
winter.. Grass is in good condition. Several
weeks ago grass seed was spread on bare
spots on the south lawn.
The windscreen on the north fence was
vandalized. The screen was repaired on
Yard and Dock Day.
The Richter Building was cleaned and
organized a few weeks ago. Please feel free
to use needed equipment for projects. Please
return equipment to its proper location.
Report any broken or damaged equipment
to the Yard Director.
A new canopy was installed along with
the sides for the awning over the entrance to
RYC.
The Outside Smoking Lounge is located
within the gray enclosure located north of
the ramp leading to the Club house entrance.
Smokers are asked to use this smoking area.
Due to the lingering smoke odor, smoking is
prohibited on the entrance ramp. Please
respect the needs of non-smoking members.
As a reminder, all tobacco and smoking
materials are banned from use in the RYC
Clubhouse; this includes electronic type
devices. The RYC Outside Smoking Lounge
is a convenient area for lighting up.

Entertainment Director Kurt Lasson
reported he has met with the director of the
“Thoughts for Food” program and intends
to serve on their committee to revise the
programming of this event to provide more
appropriate and quality entertainment at
the venues.
The popular Gobble Wobble is again
scheduled for the Wednesday evening
before Thanksgiving. The “turkey warmup”
dinner will be served by Club members
during the Packer game on November 16th.
Members should bring a dish to pass to
compliment the entrée.
Lasson is working on the entertainment
plans for New Years Eve.

Life member Lillian Rondone passed away
in October and Mark Rode’s father, Fred
Rode, passed away in early November.
RYC extends sincere condolences to the
Rondone family; and Mark, Mary Jo and
the Rode family during this difficult time.

Hennig Wins Mac Trophy
examples of viable yacht clubs without
adjoining slip system, it was a good
decision.
Race Director Bob Sample reported his has
completed the race schedule for 2015. In
addition to the events of previous years,
Sample is scheduling the US Sailing
Multihull Championship for early August.
CRAW will be organizing this event for U S
Sailing. Sample also plans several events to
include cruisers and short-handed crews.
The Awards Banquet will be held
January 24th at the Club, theme to be
announced.
Sample reported the prop on Race II was
damaged beyond repair and is seeking a
replacement prop.
Tenacity is the single word that best
describes Rick Hennig and his crew’s
more than 35 year pursuit of a Chicago
Mackinac Race victory. On Saturday,
November 1, Chicago Yacht Club
recognized Rick, his crew of 14 and his
69ft racing sailboat Denali for winning the
Turbo (unlimited) Section of this year’s
Mackinac Race and awarded him the
George Owens Clinch Trophy. Twentyfive-plus-year hard core veterans of Rick’s
crew include his lifetime sailboat racing
friends – Jamie Martin, Ken Fox, John
Kilsdonk, Todd Knop & Mark Monroe.
The catering. Oh boy, the catering. I don’t
know what to tell you, but our current
caterer is leaving us in the next month.
I understand that we have a new search
starting for their replacement. In
retrospect, I believe we need more
directive communication with the caterer.
Most every failure we have seen in our
past food and beverage operations can be
directly attributable to our failure to
explain exactly what is expected. I think
we witnessed this for all of my tenure and
that sort of thing is not excusable.
However, the whole food thing is a case
where we cannot satisfy every taste and
desire. Past Commodore Rode had a
policy of requiring all dining complaints
in writing. It was a reasonable way to
approach the monitoring task.
Infrastructure. In my mind, it’s pretty
good. We will need a roof in a few years,
but we are moving in the right direction
financially to pay for that expenditure.
Nothing lasts forever.
For the good of the Club. I would like to
see more participation in the General
Membership Meetings. It is an opportunity
for all of us to ask questions of the Board.
In the next month, it is particularly
important to have a quorum present for
the election of new officers. In other
words, come down and vote for Gregg
Henning so I can move out into the
audience.

POWER SQUADRON: Jobson announced
the district conference is scheduled for next
weekend.
ADULT SAILING: Manning announced
Bill Erdmann will be joining him as sailing
instructor for the 2015 class sessions.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Manning
reported planning continues for the 100th
anniversary celebrations.
COMMUNICATIONS: Cook read several
thank you letters:

the Official Evening on the Water event.
There were also two requests from nonprofit organizations requesting donations.
The Club will offer gift certificates to sailing
classes to the Junior Achievement and the
Racine Police Canine Unit fund raisers.
Chicago Yacht Club has organized and
run the Mackinac Race since 1898. It is the
oldest and longest - 333 miles - freshwater
sailboat race in the world. Over this period
of more than a century, many notable
sailors from around the world have tested
their skills as a skipper or crew against the
demands of this race. Some have pursued
the dream of a Chicago Mackinac Race
victory for a lifetime without success.
Rick and his crew join a unique fraternity
of Chicago Mackinac winners. They join a
very select list of George Owens Clinch
Trophy past winners which includes,
among others, Larry Ellison, whose team
won the America’s Cup this year on San
Francisco Bay.
NEW BUSINESS: Cook reminded Board
members that written annual reports are
due at the next Board meeting, to be read at
the November general meeting.
Manning announced that the House
Committee will be meeting with the caterer
regarding Wednesday night food service.
