Racine Yacht Club Commodore’s Report
December 2015
Racine, Wisconsin
Rock Stars at the 2015 Gobble Wobble
It’s hard to believe that an entire year has gone by and we find
ourselves in the holiday season again. At November’s General
Membership Meeting our members graciously extended my
term as Commodore for another year. I am extremely honored
and humbled. Please help me welcome Frank Gall as our new
Pier Director! Mark Lukow moved on to the Recording
Secretary position. A special thanks to John Lyon for his
service as Recording Secretary for the past year. The rest of the
board has stayed on to help shape the future of RYC and
continue to embrace our traditions.
Feasting at the Turkey Warmup
Taco Tuesday. Just another great reason to spend more time
at RYC!
December will see our annual events of Breakfast with Santa,
Tom and Jerrys on Christmas morning, and the New Year’s
Eve Blast. What’s new this year is our own Yard Director, Jack
Landwehr, turns 60 this year. Everyone should make sure that
Jack gets a warm reception for his special day!
November also brought some great events such as our Shop
‘til You Drop vendor fair, the Turkey Warm-up, the Gobble
Wobble with Kurt’s Karocky Show, and, of course, Tom and
Jerrys on Thanksgiving morning. The Packers games are
always a fun time even if you are not a fan of the Packers. All
events were well attended, and the Club just keeps rolling
with excitement.
If you have not been to the Club on Tuesday, Wednesday, or
Thursday evenings, Eddie has expanded his food service.
Come down for Taco Tuesday, Wild Wing Wednesday or
Build Your Own Burger Thursdays. I have been there on Wild
Wing Wednesday! Love those wings! Build your own Burger
night is awesome. Try my favorite burger, bacon, American
cheese, mayo, and a fried egg on top! Delicious! Next stop—

Looking forward to 2016 is exciting as the true 100th year of
our Club continues the celebration. Keep your eyes and ears
open for more great events. Next year’s racing season looks to
be quite filled as RYC will host many high profile events. Our
race director, Bob Sample, has been working hard to make
RYC the place to race! Check our website for the 2016 Racing
Schedule!
Keep those shorts on! Remember, it is always tropical in
your mind!

RYC News in Brief, with Annual Reports
From the November Board meeting minutes,
Treasurer Frank Randall presented the October
Treasurer’s report and commented that October
was another great month from a financial
standpoint.
Kim and Frank are in the final stages of
preparing the 2016 budget worksheet. Kim is
working on estimates for a couple of items, but
we will prepare a worksheet and should be able
to send out in the near future. Kim and I
estimate income and expense for recurring
items, but each of the Board members is
responsible for estimating one-time expenses
(or income) in their area of responsibility. Board
members should also review the accuracy of
estimates for items in their respective areas.
Lake Michigan fell 3 inches in the last
month and is now at the same level as it was
last year at this time.
Commodore Gregg Henning presented his
annual report: The year 2015 started with many
challenges. RYC contracted a new caterer,
which has turned out to be a fantastic
relationship between the two parties. We saw
plumbing issues in the house that created
unexpected expenditures. The 100th
Anniversary Committee has been hard at work
raising funds and offering great experiences for
our Club members to participate in. As we near
the end of the year, I find our Club to be fiscally
sound and on good footing for the future. All of
this could not be done without the dedication of
the current Board and the hard work of our
RYC members. It has been a great honor to
serve as Commodore and I am looking forward
to one incredible celebration in 2016.
Vice Commodore John Stanley presented his
annual report: Another year has breezed by and
we are on the eve of our 100th year of serving
the sailors of Racine. A lot of very successful
events have occurred with immense support of
all of our members.
Starting the year we needed a new caterer
and found what I believe is a winner with
Eddie and Magnolia. Meal service and revenue
has increased over the year. A good variety and
changing menu has kept members coming
back. I think the caterer is always looking for
improvements, so please keep your comments
coming, both good and not-so-good. Along
with the caterer search, we had to replace aging
plumbing under the bar floor. An unexpected
expense, but with great help by the house
committee volunteers, cost was kept down,
with minimal disruption to Club services.
Entertainment continues to be a big draw
with our karaoke, jam sessions and annual
parties. Kurt, please keep up the outstanding
job.
Membership - Pam woks diligently to
draw new members in. Just a month ago, RYC
hosted the Preservation Racine Tour and we
have two new members. This is the kind of
commitment we need to grow the membership.
We are also adjusting our membership
classifications to encourage younger members.
We need to build our members to take us the
next 100 years.
I would like to thank all the members,
directors and their teams along with the board
for the countless hours spent improving our
experience here at Racine Yacht Club. We have
had a great 100 years and I am looking forward
to starting the next 100.
Office Manager Kim Shortess led a discussion
updating the committee regarding the POS
system status. She has been diligently trying to
get a follow-up response from the parties
involved. Committee made recommendation to
pursue other options at this time.
Rear Commodore Amy Cermak presented her
Annual report: I am very fortunate to have
three awesome directors who work very
diligently to provide the best sail race program
(Bob Sample), pier system (Mark Lukow), and
yard (Jack Landwehr) on the Great Lakes.
The Youth Sailing program began with
RYC hosting the US Sailing Level One and
Small Boat Instructor course. This was a fourday classroom and on the water program sailed
in the 420s. Due to the cold Lake Michigan
temperatures and the generosity of the Racine
YMCA, the students completed the swimming
test in the Y pool.
RYC sailing school was a success: 52
students participated this past summer under
the leadership of our sailing instructors: Brent
Strand, Alysia LeCrone, and Zoie Weiss. We
very much appreciated the three new Evinrude
outboard motors that were provided by
Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) to
support our youth and racing program.
On July 5-7, 2015 RYC had two 420 teams
participate in the Kaszube Cup Regatta, in
Milwaukee.
This year, three Open boats were added
and Friday kids evening sail. They were held
June 19th, July 24th, and August 28th the sailing
instructors were available for instruction and
guidance. Students were able to sail the Optis,
BICs and 420s.
We started a, “Learn to race program” for
kids aboard the 420’s. This was well received,
and we plan to expand the program next year.
This was our 16th year for the Adventure
Sail program, a collaborative effort by Racine
Yacht Club, Girls Inc. of Racine, and The
Women’s Sailing Foundation. Forty girls
participated in the hands-on, lakeside-learning
program aboard the schooner Dennis Sullivan.
This educational program was presented by
Discovery World museum in Milwaukee.

While aboard the ship the girls learned about
water quality, invasive species, fish, plankton
and benthos. They were also able to look at
microorganisms through a microscope.
As we look ahead at 2016, RYC is pleased to
host the Area K U.S. Sailing Bemis, Smythe &

I look forward to serving as Rear
Commodore for the 2015-2016 year as we
celebrate our 100th Anniversary. RYC will
continue to improve our race program; hosting
both national and regional championships. Our
pier and dock system will be updated to offer

My first venture was Strictly Sail, after which
we had a drawing for six dinner certificates at
the Club, but only one couple used it. They
showed some interest, but have not joined as of
now. We received no new members from this
venture.
I am currently working with Joe Racine on
a new and updated Booth for 2016. We will then
revisit this show as to whether it is worth our
time and money in the future.
The RYC open house was in June. We
welcomed five new Members. (All of them
came from the Adult Sailing Class.)
We hosted Preservation Racine in
September. It came with some interest. Just
received an application for Membership last
weekend and another couple from the
informational night held. (not included in
Membership count)
I worked with John Murphy on two
proposed Membership By-law changes. At the
last General Meeting, both By-law changes
passed unanimously: they affected Legacy
Membership and Active Under 30
My hope is that we will acquire younger
Members to keep this great Club alive!

House Director Jim Mc Bain presented his
annual report: RYC House, as of October 2015,
is slightly above budget by 3%. This takes into
account the drain line repairs that were
substantial. The original cast iron drains in the
cooler/electrical/mechanical closets and the
sink lines from the bar were replaced with more
durable materials and hopefully will last longer
than the 40+ years the initial ones did. Also,
while we at it, there were lines installed to add
more beer taps in the future.
The year began with a rocky start with the
sudden departure of the former caterer, leaving
us to find a replacement in short order. As
typical with the Club, a group of members
volunteered significant time and effort to find a
new caterer and the partnership with Pink
Magnolia has, in my opinion, been successful.
• Sales from Bar & food service are up for this
year by over $20,000 as compared to 2014,
with net income in the black.
•Sailing season is over and food is still being
served on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and
Thursdays in addition to the established times.
• Wine tastings, beer tastings and other special
events have been occurring more often and
are well attended.
• The selection at the bar has also expanded
based on member’s input.
The February shutdown went as planned.
The galley equipment was removed, the entire
area cleaned and a fresh coat of paint was
added. This was in addition to the usual
through cleaning of the carpets, tile floor, bar,
tables, chairs, etc.
The next shutdown is planned after Sunday
service is finished on February 14th. We will
need to do some major sprucing up to celebrate
our 100th Anniversary.
Special thanks go out to Mike Fox, Joe
McGauran and all the other members that
contributed their time throughout the year to
keep the Club the best second home on the
Lake.
Pier Director Mark Lukow presented his
annual report: Occupancy is down. Water
levels are up. Our response to changing water
levels, in both time and money, have caused us
to defer planned electrical upgrades, minor
repairs and replacement. We’re moving away
from annual slip contacts. 2016 slip deposits will
be posted in November. Pay it by December 31
and you won’t need to fill out a 2016 slip
contract. Pier is closed for the season. Access is
limited to the Pier Committee and slip holders
removing lines and emptying dock boxes.
Paid occupancy, as measured by rented
slips, is below budget and below last year. We
rented 49 out of 60 slips. Departures include Wet
Barr’gh (Jared and Courtney Shortess,) Friendship
(Robin Knodel,) Foxy (Blaise Arena,) Honey B
(John and Barbara Nowak,) Brigadoon (Alan and
Tina Dunn,) and Bob Junker’s S2 7.9, Senta.
Would someone please make Bob a solid offer
for Senta? The 7.9 fleet is fun, competitive, and
always looking for new boats. The 7.9 Class
Championship Regatta returns to Racine next
summer. What a great time to get in on the 7.9
experiences. We issued one demit to Bill
Erdmann for Harbour Haze. Not counting the
Lunn’s who moved up to a new-to-them
Catalina 36 named Defiance; we welcomed two
new boats to the slip system:
• Steve and Kristin Gancarz moved their 26 foot
Paceship, Jenmar, up from Great Lakes.
• Terry Marcus bought Loyal, a Catalina 26,
from the Sea Scouts.
Getting slip rentals up to the 55-58 range is one
of the main challenges for 2016.
Changing water levels have provided
significant challenges the last four years. We
lowered finger piers. We dredged. We raised
finger piers. We raised them again. Within a
range, many finger piers go up and down easily.
The labor intensive part is rebuilding stairs,
hand rails and working with and around dock
boxes. With two exceptions, all finger piers are
as high as they go without significant effort and
re-engineering. Most finger piers on west pier
were too low last summer. Higher water levels
are the root cause of last year’s ice damage. The
forecast for this winter is close to last winter so
we can anticipate more of the same.
Slip contracts now auto renew. Deposits
will be billed in the fall and you have until
December 31st to pay or opt-out.
I thank Frank Gall for stepping up and
accepting the nomination for Pier Director. I
thank Dick Salisbury for getting me involved
with the Club and for his mentoring. I thank
everyone who helped out on the pier these last
four years, especially those of you who exposed
me to tools I never knew I couldn’t live without.
Like many Pier Directors before me, I’ve agreed
to stay on the Pier Committee and help out as
needed. This is the best committee I’ve ever
been on. No meetings, just getting it done.
Thanks to: Dick Salisbury, Charlie Gagnon, Jim
Sittig, Charlie Manning, and Frank Gall. In
addition to valued help from everyone on Dock
& Yard Day I need to call out Rick Cermak,
Andrew Witkowski and Bob Dean for their help
last spring.
Fiscal matters
The pier system is an important income
generator for the Club, income more than
covers normal operating expenses. I divide
gross pier income into thirds. 1/3 should be
adequate to cover operations, repair,
maintenance and replacement. 1/3 should go to
the Club to help cover Club-operating expenses.
The last 1/3 should go to reserves to cover
major pier expenses that only pop up every
decade or two. The next major pier expense will
be main pier piling replacement. At some point
after that we’ll need to dredge. ACTION: Club
reserves should be going up by $20-25k/year.
(At this point Mark provided a very detailed report of
recommendations for repairing and upgrading the
pier system. No space in this issue for that. Contact
Mark if you’d like to know more. -Ed)
Yard Director Jack Landwehr reported:
RYC Yard completed yearly activities under
budget. I want to thank all RYC volunteers that
helped maintain the appearance of RYC
grounds by: planting flowers, weeding,
decorating, cutting grass, trimming bushes,
watering grass, watering plants, emptying
ashtrays, cleaning the patio, cleaning grills,
wiping off picnic tables, removing cobwebs
from the overhang, spraying for insects,
emptying garbage cans, litter picking the
grounds and beach areas and disposing of the

IN HONOR OF GERHARDT KNOP
I’m sharing this on behalf of my brother
Keith and our parents Cliff and Charlotte
as we celebrate the life of Gerry Knop,
more affectionately known to us as
Uncle Gerry.
I’m so grateful and very fortunate to
have been born into such a great family.
Gerry was a thread that kept his family
and friends tightly knit together.
He was truly an intelligent man with
a big heart and an enthusiastic and
adventuresome spirit. He amplified
enthusiasm in everything he did, be it
building family homes, a Yacht Club,
being the first one on the lift at the
slopes, winning numerous sailboat races
and forever exploring beyond the No
Trespassing signs.
Gerry’s passions became the passions
and joys of everyone he became involved
with.
I’m forever greatful that Todd, Terry,
Keith and myself have been able to pass
all this and more into the spirits and
lives of our children.

News in Brief and Annual Reports, cont’d
occasional dead animal carcass. If you didn’t get
a chance to help this year, there is always next
year. It takes a lot of work each day and a lot of
extra effort by RYC members to make sure our
jewel on Lake Michigan continues to shine. All
members need to do their part to help maintain
RYC grounds. If you see something out of place,
please put it where it belongs.
I want to give a special acknowledgement
to the RYC summer Yard and Dock employees;
Maddie Lyon, Alissa LeCrone, and Maddie
Theama for their dedication to RYC. All are
scheduled to return for summer 2016.
Both 2015 Spring and Fall Yard and Dock
Day were successful. Todd Knop and Sandy
Mott made chili for the hard working volunteers
in May when RYC members took time to clean
off winter’s dirt and prepare the Yard and Dock
System for summer activities; and then again
chili was served in October after RYC volunteers
prepared RYC grounds and dock system for
winter. More painting and yard projects will be
added to the normal spring Yard and Dock Day
project list as RYC Grounds prepared for RYC
centennial year events.
The RYC lawn was fertilized and maintained
throughout the year by RYC summer employees
and the Yard Director. The lawn was watered
twice using lake water.
Both RYC 99th annual launch and haul out
were successful. RYC winter storage community
stands at 13 boats and one boatlift. There is
storage room in the dry sail area for six
additional boats. Contact Kim at the RYC office
if you are looking to store your boat in the RYC
dry sail area during this winter or next summer.
RYC’s centennial launch is scheduled for
Saturday, May 7th, 2016 and Yard and Dock
Day will be held on May 14, 2016.
In August, RYC was the site for a 5 Keg Beer
and Bacon run/walk organized by RYC
member Pat Flynn. The event brought over 280
young and old participants to RYC. Pat received
overwhelming positive comments for the event
and is planning other family-orientated events
to be held on RYC grounds.
The Club smoking area is located behind
the gray enclosure just north of the ramp to the
front door. It has been updated with chairs,
tables and ashtrays. When the dining room is
not occupied, smoking can also be done on the
east patio using the door north of the bar. As a
reminder, the ramp to the Clubhouse is a
smoke-free zone. Once the winter windscreen is
installed, smoke from cigarettes can build up
under the awning and enters the Clubhouse
when the door is opened causing an unpleasant
odor inside the Clubhouse. Smokers, as a
courtesy to RYC members and guests, please
use designated smoking areas.
Spring 2016 will bring a major capital
improvement for RYC grounds. Most trees
located in the parking lot need to be replaced.
The cost per tree will exceed $250 for removal of
old tree and planning of a new tree. As this
project moves on, more information will be
made available such as the type of tree, actual
cost and planting schedule. RYC members
interested in donating a tree in the memory of a
loved one can contact the RYC Board for details.
To begin the New Year, plans are being
made for RYC to team up with Racine
Firefighters to register participants at RYC
before the 2016 North Beach Polar Bear Plunge.
North Beach Polar Bear Plunge is a 20-year
Racine tradition that helps raise money for local
charities. The North Beach Polar Bear Plunge
takes place at high noon on January 1st. The
galley will be open at 7am for participants to
register, make donations, and eat and drink
prior to the plunge. Participants and spectators
will walk to North Beach just north of the RYC
Club house around 11:30 to prepare to take the
plunge at high noon; returning then to RYC to
warm up and to continue their New Year’s Day
festivities such as playing cards, 50/50 raffles,
playing board games and watching college
bowl football game (hope WI Badgers are
playing in one of the games on January 1st).
Outside accommodations will be set up on
December 31.
Events that welcome the public to RYC
such as the 5 Keg Beer and Bacon Run/Walk,
Racine Preservation Tour, and North Beach
Polar Bear Plunge, along with private parties
provide an opportunity to introduce RYC to
prospective members. Without new members,
we will eventually run out of old members. I
believe it is the responsibility of each RYC
member to help build on the rich tradition RYC
provides by participating in Club events and
inviting friends, family and co-workers to join
the fun at RYC.
It was again a pleasure to serve RYC
members as Yard Director and to serve with
RYC Board Members in the future.
Entertainment Director Kurt Lasson presented
his annual report: What a great year! Weather
was the greatest for all of our scheduled events
and you showed up to make them fun. Instead
of talking about the past I’m going to talk about
what’s coming up for our 100th Year
Anniversary.
Breakfast with Santa Dec 13th. Trudy takes
charge of this event and like the best elf Santa
could have gets the job done beautifully. Make
sure you contact Kim and get your info to her
about who you have attending.
New Years’ Eve this year is going to be a
little dressier. Eddie will be setting is up with
some fine eats so please get your call in to

Jan. brings the Awards Dinner.
Feb. Valentines Bash,
March St. Pats Party,
April , 100 year Birthday Party. This will be
a 2-day event. Karazy...
In May will be the Gala. Not my gig.
June, is The Tri Club Party. We are last this
year and with last year’s attendance of
around 250. I expect this one to be huge.
June-Sept., it’s race time and ya know what
that means all kinds of stuff happening.
Sept. Blue Nose Regatta and Shrimp boil.
Oct, Trick or Treat which was well attended
this year. Unreal costumes.
Nov. will be the Gobble Wobble.
Well there we go, full circle again. It’s been a joy
being your entertainment dude now going on
my 6th Year.
Thanks to all my “Peeps” with showing up
and making the events a good time. I have to
thank Sandy Mott. Her handling our printouts
and our trips to the stores for events is always
quite unusually enjoyable.
Kim... what can I say, “She the best”. Thanks
Kim for all your efforts.
Race Director Bob Sample presented his
annual report: The 2015 Racing Program will be
completed with our Awards Banquet to honor
Winners from our summer racing program,
special awards and the HOOK Race. We
anticipate a large attendance of our members,
plus out of town HOOK winners and crew..
The Wednesday Night Racing Program
continues to be the mainstay of our racing
program. The Hook Race was very successful
under Scott Lewis as Chairman.
Our maturing Race Committee and
associated volunteers provide the nucleus for
our Club’s reputation as a great venue for major
championship races. During August we held
the RYC Regatta and the CRAW Regatta. Our
schedule for the 2016 includes the following
major events:
Bemis & Smythe Youth Qualifier Regatta
(4 days)
Star Blue Star Regatta
F-16 National Championship
The Buccaneer National Championship
S2 7.9 Class Championship Regatta
We continued the Racine Park District
participation in providing a sailing experience
to their summer program participants. This
program will be expanded for 2016.
The Race Committee continues to grow in
membership and organization. During the 2015
season all races were conducted with the use of
a mark set boat. Our Race II boat was replaced
with a Sea Ray 26 during the season. We will
continue to work on the maintenance of our
Race Committee Fleet so that the boats are
ready to go when needed. John Stanley arranged
for 3 new Manufacturer supplied motors for
Racer Chaser and the Youth Program boats. We
have added 2 Hobie 16 cats to our instructional
fleet through donation.
2016 will be a year of further expansion of our
Racing, Youth and Adult Sailing Programs
within the Racine Community. All of our Club
members will be solicited to assist us in this
endeavor.
