RYC’s Birthday Bash
Photos courtesy of Gregg Henning
Let’s party! Oh wait, I think we already started. Kurt threw
one heck of a birthday weekend bash! I, for one, had way too
much fun for one person. On Friday night, Vito Zatto kept the
entire crowd active and participating in his show! We were
blessed to have many dignitaries from other local yacht clubs
join us for the fun. On Saturday night, EZFM, entertained the
crowd with 70’s and 80’s yacht rock. We even had a delicious
cake that looked like the Club! If you haven’t noticed on the
way into the Club, South Shore Yacht Club sent a beautiful
plant in honor of our 100th Anniversary.
Speaking of parties, our 100th Gala Event is set for the evening
of Saturday, May 28th. Make sure you make your reservations
early and dust off those dancing shoes as Swing Nouveau is
sure to get you on your feet. Also that morning, we will hold
our annual Opening Day ceremonies at 11:00 A.M. Sandi Fox
will have the new clothes line available and a fashion show
you can enjoy while having lunch. Eddie is planning
something special for us. If weather allows, I would love for
everyone to dress their boats up! Hoist those flags to celebrate
100 years of RYC!
RYC hosted Picasso Vino for a Paint Night. Some of our
members put their talents to the test with a brush in one hand
and a drink in the
other as they created a
“Sunset Sail.” What a
great turnout, and we
certainly have some
budding artists.
If you didn’t notice,
RYC’s mast has
returned to its home!
Rick Hennig and crew
spent over 500 hours
restoring our mast
which is a symbol that
will stand tall over our Club for many years to come. Rick said
Dave Opahle was his right hand man on this project who put
in over 120 hours lending his expertise. Laurie and Rick are
Phones ミ General: (262) 634-8585
donating the material cost of $5,000.00 to the RYC in memory
of Gary Knop! Many others contributed time and hard work
on this project with wood replacement, carbon and Kevlar
reinforcements, priming, painting and a stainless steel windex
on top. If this work had been contracted out, the total cost
would have come to approximately $50,000. This is just
another example of why the members at Racine Yacht Club
are so incredible.
By the time you read this, hopefully boats have been launched
and the slip system will be filled up in anticipation of a
historic summer at the Club. Adult sailing classes will have
begun and the Club will begin the exciting hustle and bustle
of a new season! Get in those work or pay hours at Yard and
Dock day on Saturday, May 14th. Let’s spruce up the Club
and make it sparkle prior to the Gala!
Spring is here, put your shorts on, keep positive vibes and
summer is just around the corner!
Remember it is always tropical in your mind!

News in Brief, cont’d
•After these changes we have 260
members.
House Director Jim Mc Bain reported:
•Hail, hail, the new beers are here.
Commodore Henning is chair of the new
beer selection committee.
•Jim reports many recent false alarms.
Some due to birthday balloons floating
around and tripping motion sensors.
(Kim likes the balloons, but she doesn’t
get the 3 am calls.)
From Pier Director Frank Gall:
•Recent poor weather has reduced
number of work days.
•East pier work is done. Everything is as
high as it goes.
•Water is high enough we don’t need the
dinghy ramp on east pier. Frank plans to
pull and rework the ramp.
•Frank is working with Bob Dean on
steps and broken welds on west pier.
From Yard Director Jack Landwehr:
•Jack is not getting much help on the
week day work parties. Addendum:
Several volunteers were working in the
yard on Saturday April 16th.
•Jack plans to use summer help to finish
tasks that aren’t done by or on Dock &
Yard day so everything looks good for
the gala.
•There was discussion about removing
the tarp from the beach. Jack is using the
tarp to kill/prevent weeds but understands some consider it an eyesore.
•Jack cancelled the parking lot tree
planting.
•Jack is looking for a new place to store
club canoes and kayaks. (High water
shrunk our beach and the racks washed
out.)
•Launch is April 30th. Work or pay is
available for members (excepting
skippers and their crew.)
• Dock & Yard day is May 14th.
•Summer help Maddie Lyons, Maddie
Thema and Alyssia LaCrone are
returning. Local youth Wesley Paffrath is
too young to use power equipment but
will be added as a trainee.
•Jack wants to host a home brew beer
tasting in the Club’s dry sail area on May
7th with a tasting from 1600 to 2000.
Donations will be collected to cover
brewers expenses but will not pass
through the Club. John Stanley moved
authorization of this event. Pam Jobson
seconded. The motion carried after
discussion.
From Race Director Bob Sample:
•Bob predicts docking for summer youth
events will be a big project. Some events
will require moving all boats out of the
dry sail area.
•Bob is working on articles of
incorporation for a youth sailing
foundation.
•Bob is working with Park District on fun
sails and other activities.
1916
•Bob reports the city is working with
UW-Milwaukee on a North Beach
concessions plan.
•Bluenose/shrimp boil timing was
discussed.
•John Stanley moved that the Club’s Sea
Ray 26 committee boat be named the
“Gerry E. Knop.” The motion was
seconded and passed.
From Entertainment Director Kurt Lasson:
•Kurt reported lots of great feedback on
the Club’s two-night April birthday
party.
•Kurt is booking seven bands now
through CRAW. Regatta/CRAW week
will be a very big week.
•Kurt is lining up a jazz type band for
Mother’s Day.
•The Tri-club party should be big this
year. The party ends here. Kurt is
scheduling the tour bus band (not the
name of the band, they came in a bus last
time.)
•Kurt plans to repeat the hog’n dog for
regatta.
•Kurt scheduled May 21 nautical swap
meet/flea market.
COMMUNICATIONS:
Commodore Henning received a gracious
letter from South Shore Yacht Club
thanking us for the 100th birthday party.
They also sent a nice flower arrangement.

RYC Roots: The First 100 Years
Your 100th Anniversary Historical
Committee has been busy for the past year
tracing our Yacht Club’s origins and rich
past with monthly four-page inserts in this
newsletter, the Reef Point. The April insert,
about the late Bill Richter, was the final
piece we did that way.
Because we have much more material we
will be incorporating everything, including
all the inserts we have already published,
into a nicely bound 100+ page book that
should be available on Opening Day, May
28. Priced at $24.95, it will make a great
addition to your library and you will own
a piece of our history. Please support your
Club by buying a copy or two.
