Mark your calendar: Mar. 5 - Thoughts for Food Mar. 13 - Soup on Sunday Mar. 19 - St. Patrick’s Day Party Mar. 27 - Easter Brunch April 1 - Vito Zatto-Comedy REEF POINT “For the encouragement and promotion of yachting and the creation of a spirit of good fellowship…” March 2016 (RYC Constitution, Article II) Racine Yacht Club Commodore’s Report Racine, Wisconsin RYC South! Punta Gorda, Florida Photo courtesy of Susan Cain February was a month for lovers and workers. Eddie created a three day Valentine’s extravaganza offering wonderful taste treats for our members and their Valentine! Following that up was our annual shutdown. House Director, Jim Mc Bain, with his lead crew of Mike Fox and Joe McGuaran, directed ambitious members to spruce up our Club. A fresh coat of paint, cleaned carpets, and a sparkling kitchen are just a few of the items that were accomplished. One great addition, or should I say four great additions, are the four new beer lines. Look for some tasty new brews available at the RYC Bar. I have worked with Eddie to have a Commodore’s Choice Tap. We should have some great flavors available for even the most discerning beer snob. Pam Jobson and her membership team have been busy bringing in new members. I believe this is the most difficult job in the Club. Help Pam out by referring your friends to join our second home on the lake. A note was shared with me from one of our new members, expressing what a wonderful asset Pam is to our Club and how friendly our members are. I have to agree with our new member as Pam is one of the reasons why Racine Yacht Club is one of the greatest clubs on Lake Michigan. Keep it up Pam! Scott Lewis has been busy drumming up contestants for the 2016 HOOK race. As I write this, we already have 31 registered boats! Go Scott! Did you ever wonder why it is a little slower in the winter time at RYC? The photo at right might just shed some light on just why. Look at the crowd of RYC members at “RYC South” in Punta Gorda, Florida! Hey snowbirds, make sure you are back for the big celebration in May! Just a few things to look forward to include Friday, April 1st. Kurt has some great entertainment planned so stay tuned. On Saturday, April 2nd will be the informal RYC Birthday Party. More details to follow. Phones ミ General: (262) 634-8585 Here is a special “Save the Date”, for Saturday, May 28th! This will not only be our Opening Day but also our 100th Anniversary Extravaganza, so put it in your calendar! If you are busy on that day, change your plans! This is an event you won’t want to miss! Something to make your smile even larger…launch day has been moved up to Saturday, April 30th! Even though it feels like winter, keep your shorts on, keep positive vibes, and summer will be here sooner than you think! It is always tropical in your mind! — Gregg Henning, Commodore St Patrick’s Day Party Special Sale Event Save 1/2 off the RED markdown - Great prices One Time Deals 4:30 - 6:30 pm Saturday March 19th WINTER CLUB HOURS Closed Monday and Tuesday Open Weds, Thurs, Fri, Sat at 11AM Open Sun at 8AM Lunch available Wed/Thur/Fri 11AM - 2PM Bar Menu Available Wed/Thurs 4PM to 9PM Racine Yacht Club ・ One Barker Street ・ Racine, WI 53402 42 44.24 N - 87 46.69 W Office, 7:00amミNoon: (262) 634-8587 FAX (262) 634-8971 Web site: www.racineyachtClub.org e-mail: [email protected] View the Reef Point in color on our Web site! Donna Meinert passed away on February 18th after a battle with cancer. Donna had many fond memories as a long time RYC member. RYC extends sincere sympathies to each of their families during this difficult time. News in Brief, cont’d precariously on a piling. We’ve raised and chained the two submerged fingers along with a couple others that were at risk. • Ice eaters running. Had to haul one ice eater that choked on plastic bags while river was running. From Yard Director Jack Landwehr: •Jack has an estimate to repair entryway canvas but is contemplating replacing this section with a wooden wall with a window. He assured us it would not look like the inside of an ice shanty. Jack was encouraged to just repair the canvas. •Jack is working with Dean Steger to repair/replace the wind screen on the north fence. •Jack reported that a key player is unavailable for the planned launch date. With approval of participants the launch date has been moved up one week to April 30. •The Yard Committee will be running the ice out contest again. Jack submitted a written report which has been posted on the Club bulletin board. Highlights include: •Work or pay will be available on April 30 (Launch Day), May 7 (Dry Sail and Richter projects) and May 14 (official Dock & Yard Day.) This is a great way to meet other members. •Jack is working on a home brew beer/ wine/whiskey event in the Dry Sail area after the May 7 work party. •Members using dry sail area or dinghy racks need to complete a 2016 contract and get a sticker. The dry sail area will be open for summer storage after 1600h on Dock & Yard Day (May 14.) •There are several boats that were stored without contract or payment in 2015. Any of these boats not under contract on June 1 will be considered abandoned and disposed of by the Yard Director. •Mild winter so far. Jack is happy with the new snow plowing service. From Race Director Bob Sample: Bob was unable to attend and submitted the following written report: •Awards Ball: Everyone enjoyed a great party with 130 reservations & actual attendance 128. Eddie provided an excellent meal and service. Now planning for next year. •F-16 Nationals: CRAW confirmed that they have been awarded the National Event. The first planning meeting is set for Feb 11. The event will start on August 10 with some cats arriving for the Regatta August 6th. The event will conclude on August 14. •Youth Sailing Day: CRAW is making a big push this year to promote Youth Sailing. They are going to have a Youth sailing day on August 8, just before the F16 Nationals. The wind surfing group may also join in this promotion. They would like to add a second day and are checking possible dates. •Romey Repairs: The insurance company has increased our Claim amount to $3,600 and is sending us a check for $672 to cover the increased amount. •Projects: Work continues on several initiatives for our RYC Race and Youth Programs for 2016 including a revamp design for our launching dock areas so we can accommodate the Bemis-Smythe Regatta participants. •Additional events are being evaluated along with our Park District program. From Entertainment Director Kurt Lasson: • Thoughts for Food at Club on March 5th. Tickets available soon. Planning on four bands with an earlier end time. February 12th. Wireless mic worked well at the award dinner but we need to keep the speaker out from under the person speaking. Also working to upgrade outdoor PA (Public Address) speakers and the speakers around the projection TV. •Thanks to Mike and Joe Fox for installing a new remote controlled viewing screen at the north end of the dining room. It’s great, we no longer need to set an anchor to hold the screen down. Addendum: Per Mike Fox, USE THE REMOTE TO LOWER AND RAISE SCREEN. DO NOT PULL ON THE HANDLE. COMMITTEE REPORTS •By-Laws. FOR THE GOOD OF THE CLUB John Stanley reports that the Kenosha Yacht Club bar has reopened after being (shortchanged –Ed.) by their previous caterer. Recent practice is that our five directors begin their terms at the annual meeting. This amendment aligns our constitution with recent practice. Proposed change: In Article VI Section B last sentence strike the words “next regularly scheduled meeting” and replace with “general meeting on the third Thursday in November”. If approved, Article VI, Section B will read, with change in bold here: The five non-office holding directors shall be elected at the Annual Meeting. Their term of office shall be two years and is staggered so as to provide for a minimum of two and a maximum of three newly elected directors at each annual meeting. The directors shall begin their term of office as the first order of new business at the general meeting on the third Thursday in November, whether or not a 4 quorum be present, and shall serve until their successors have been duly elected and begin their term of office. As the February meeting has been canceled the vote on this change will take place at our March meeting. Approval requires a quorum and approval by 2/3s of the members present.
