Matthew 2:11 As we begin to ponder the great feast of the Nativity of the Lord which we will quickly be celebrating, I would ask you to think for a moment what will we do when we encounter the new born Christ in the manger in Bethlehem. Those who sought Him with a pure hear and honest, sincere intentions received a very positive change in their lives. King Herod had no intentions or interest in worshipping the “new born King” about whom the Three Wise Men from the east had spoken. His searching of the scriptures was not for enlightenment but rather for evil and destruction. As a result of his predetermined actions, he was to remain in darkness. The three wise men desired to see the “New King” and had overcome many obstacles to find Him. Their desire and good will, coupled with the heavenly star of Bethlehem, enabled them to come, adore, and see the long anticipated God-event in the history of humankind. We, too, must take our own personal trip to the cave of Bethlehem during this season of Advent or the Nativity Fast. For many, this precious time is either wasted or lost. Other cares and negative motives have replaced the search and discovery of Emmanuel – God with us. In this time of anticipation of the fulfillment of the feast of the Nativity, let us ponder our intentions and gifts at the time when we will encounter the Holy Infant in the manger. God gave His Son, the Heavens a Star, the Earth a Cave, Humanity the Theotokos, the Wise men gifts, Angels a hymn, Shepherds adoration, and you? May our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ bless your home this Christmas with love, peace, joy and good health….a blessed Christmas….Christ is Born! Glorify Him! Inside this Issue: Fr. Christ comes from heaven: go out and meet him. Christ descends to earth: let us be raised on high. Let all the world sing to the Lord; let the heavens rejoice and let the earth be glad, for his sake who was first in heaven and then on earth. Christ is here in the flesh; let us exalt with fear and joy – with fear, because of our sins; with joy, because of the hope he brings.” 1200 50 50 40 30 100 75 50 Dearly Beloved, The powerful words of St. Gregory of Nazianzus, one of the great Fathers of the Church, truly set the tone for all of us as we once again prepare to celebrate the Great Feast of the Nativity of Our Lord. We all need to reflect upon “the Good News” of Christ’s coming as a major part of our Christmas preparations. It is only when we involve ourselves in such reflection that we can experience the peace that Christ brings and the love He has for us all. It is also then that we realize that we are called to be ambassadors of His message, sharing its peace and love with our brothers and sisters; not just at Christmas time, but throughout the year. Also, by bringing the true meaning of Christ’s Birth to others in this way, we express our thanks to the Lord for His many gifts, and especially for His coming to us in our own lives. It is my fervent prayer that you and your families have a Blessed Christmas. May the New Year 2014 be filled with the hope, love, peace and happiness that have been promised to us by the Lord Himself. With love in the Newborn Christ, +Father Kyriakos V. Saravelas Tina Manolakos in memory of Demetrios & Ismini Soteropoulos Anastasia Scangas in memory of Demetrios & Ismini Soteropoulos Katherine Asloglou in memory of Demetrios & Ismini Soteropoulos Tomas Napoleon in memory of Ismini & Demetrios Soteropoulos In memory of Ismini Soteropoulos 50 50 100 25 25 100 20 -St. Gregory of Nazianzus- In a world filled with confused values, violence, war, continued ambiguities about the future, and the great emphasis on material things; Christmas has become a “holiday” rather than a “holy day” as it was meant to be. Tinsel and lights, reindeer and Santas, toys and material gifts distract us from the reality of the mystery of Christ’s coming to bring peace and reconciliation with God our Father, as well as with our brothers and sisters. How difficult it is for all of us, in such a “glitzy environment,” to contemplate the meaning of Christmas, or to sense the magnitude of God’s love for us expressed in sending His Son. 29 ORTHODOX LIFE - December, 2013 Mr. & Mrs. Antonios Antoniou Mr. & Mrs. Leonidas Gianellis Muggeo Family Anne Brown Denise Martwichuck Mr. & Mrs. Kyriakos Andrinopoulos Mr. Dionisios Moutsoulas Theodore & Pam Soteropoulos & family, Takis & Paula Soteropoulos & family, Chris & Joanne Venios & Family Mrs. Lana Voris Anna Zaimes Xanthi & Konstantinos Siasios Mr. & Mrs. Harry Panagopoulos Theodore & Gloria Kougianos Charles & Maria Alex Phyllis Dragonas In memory of Anna Ransom 50 Elaine Carney In memory of Panayiota "Georgia" Theophilopoulos 100 50 50 50 30 25 75 50 100 50 50 50 50 25 200 100 John & Mary Theo Kostas & Panagiota Venetos Nicholas & Connie Vergados George & Rhea Koshivas Vasilios & Kyriakoula Vergados Vasilios & Stacie Stephanides Fotios & Irene Meimeteas Mrs. Anastasia Stephanides & Family Brian & Denise DeFrancesco Dr. Demosthenes Kotronis John & Voula Karedis Katherine Asloglou Helen Adamopoulos, Gail, Tom & Yanni Pappas Rita Mamos George & Pauline Troubetaris Steve & Heidi Polemenakos & family In memory of Katherine Ziavras 100 50 50 Mr. & Mrs. William Tsapatsaris Joan Tsapatsaris Salenikas/Walcott Family & Jeanne Salenikas In memory of Thalia Ethel Taloumis 50 100 30 50 50 Tina Lefthes Denise & Brian DeFrancesco Anna & George Geanakakis Lilian Roberts Phyllis Dragonas In memory of Georgia Pomakis 25 25 50 50 25 10 25 200 100 10 Clyde & Mary Hudnall Tina Lefthes Speros Booras Jane & Phillip Kritikos & family John & Mary Theo Myra & Stanley Siegel Kay Delios Catherine Scoulogenis Charles, Joan, Michael & Matthew Zakas Joan Johnson In memory of Nikolaos Michael 30 20 25 20 Mr. & Mrs. Vasilios Roumeliotis-brother Mr. & Mrs. Nick Aronis-uncle Diane Indrisano Mr. & Mrs. Kostantinos Siasios 20 30 50 Mr. & Mrs. Nick Aronis in memory of Stavros & Athena Filiopoulos Mr. & Mrs. Vasilios Roumeliotis in memory of Stavros & Athena Filiopoulos Andrew Venios in memory of Ismini Soteropoulos 28 ORTHODOX LIFE - December, 2013 Congratulations to Our Steward Archon George C. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Pamela Karamas Katsiris, President General Assembly Presidents Report November 2013 Most of you know me, personally. Baptized and brought up in this church. And my father before me, and his mother before him, and my great-grandparents who came from Greece and gave what little they had to help start this place. They thought it important to have a place to call their own, to pray and to bring up their children in the Greek Orthodox traditions. Like so many others, paying for the mortgage of the church before they owned their own homes, and paid for their own mortgages. Many of you may also know the eldest of my four children Dean. A sweet, albeit, sometimes frustrating special needs young man. This child has true faith and a pure belief. He knows that with prayer, you can make bad dreams go away, speak to loved ones you have lost and thank God for the blessings you have, and he does all those things. One of the most harrowing and trying times of our lives was when, at 5 years old, Dean underwent bilateral osteotomy; had both of his hips repaired. Which entailed a 12-hour surgery, blood transfusions, long hospital stay and months and months in a Spica cast from his armpits to his toes. It was a year before he walked again without assistance, but at 6 months when the cast came off and he was able to get out by wheelchair, the first place he said he wanted to go was to church. So I got him and his sister ready. Carried him into the car, put the wheelchair in the trunk, drove to church, parked in the back, took out the wheelchair, carried Dean to his seat and went up the ramp to ring the bell. Of course, we waited for a bit for someone to hear the bell, and then someone to come up front and open the door. Then we proceeded to stay in that the front corner, where there was no way for Dean to see the altar or the priest, but where we felt the eyes of most of the congregation looking at us. When it came time for communion, Dean couldn’t receive because there was still a step in the solea. We had to signal Fr Andrew to come to the side to give him communion, again with the eyes upon us. I definitely could not take him to the bathroom when he needed to and asked him to hold it until we got home. I couldn’t take him to Sunday school after to visit lovely Miss Jean and Mrs. Kay who had come to visit him all those months that he stayed in a hospital bed in my living room. I couldn’t take him up to coffee hour to have his half lemon donut, which is his favorite even now, and his sweet treat and reward for the week. I realize that the coming to church was really the important part, but the community that we had been away from for the better part of a year had been missed and the support of friends from church would have done a lot to heal us both of our isolated life and extremely stressful existence. I re-lived those feelings of isolation and pain a couple of weekends ago at our festival. I am the parishioner that Brandon Simpson so eloquently relayed the story of that was brought to tears when I saw the two health care aids bringing in two special needs folks to enjoy our festival. The wheelchairs had to be carried up and the individuals had to be taken out of their chairs and carried up the stairs. There was no way for them to go to the lower level to look around, take a tour of the church, or even use the handicapped bathroom that we have upstairs, as it was blocked by the food line. I was crushed when I saw how agitated one of the individuals got when she felt she was being man-handled, being carried back down the stairs, and when the workers struggled so severely to maneuver the last two steps to the road, which he would not have been able to do, but for Brandon. Philoptchos News The Community of Saint Vasilios and the Saint Makrina Sisterhood wish to honor the blessed memory of our dear friend Adeena Antonio and to thank her family for their generous donation of all her craft materials. The ladies of the Sisterhood have put them in good use making knitted items and jewelry that have generated a generous gift for our Church and a good will among the brethren who have received the lap blankets from the Saint Stephen volunteers. May her memory be eternal. We also would like to thank our beloved sister Soula for her donation of the beautiful pearls that we have been using to make necklace and earring sets for the very special "Soula Collection". We made this collection with a lot of love and prayer for her health and speedy recovery. Please use all our items in good health. God bless you. 7 ORTHODOX LIFE - December, 2013 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE (Continued from page 4) I am saddened every time my best friend Paula says her dad can’t come to church or a function, because he can’t manage the stairs. It breaks my heart to know that some day soon that may be my parents, or that a mom with twins, like me, wheeling in a double baby carriage can’t get in, or someone with a broken leg is left in the cold. We all know someone this affects. We cannot say we will not fix this, when it is in our power to do so. When ALL of us will be touched with someone we love not being able to be welcomed into the embrace of a community they love and a parish they have dedicated their lives to. This cannot continue, and I hope that you will stand with me in the coming year as we develop a plan to remedy this challenge to our church. That you will be willing to part with a few dollars, or approach someone else to do the same, because I don’t know how long Brandon’s strong arms will be able to lift you into the building. Yours in Christ, Pamela Karamas Katsiris Parish Council President Ps: This means going beyond lip service and taking the first step to making this happen.Shortly we will be forming a steering committee to address this need and we will need volunteers that are dedicated to this cause to help us. Please consider joining us. A thank you letter sent to the Philoptochos: St. Vasilios Philoptochos, Please accept this donation in memory of our grandmother...Georgia Theophilopoulos. She enjoyed the visits made by the Philoptochos Ladies and was touched by the thoughtful gifts brought to her in the nursing home. The visits made her day and the colorful small blue & green afgan she enjoyed and used daily. We hope this small donation will assist in continuing visits to others! Special note from Fr Chris: I think the entire St. Vasilios family should be very proud of the event last night. Don’t let the holiday’s derail your diet! With a particularly busy time of the year upon us, we find ourselves spending most of our time preparing our homes for the holidays, standing in lines at the mall and filling our homes with baked goods and specialty foods. A healthy diet ends up low in the priority list. We need to allow time for family and friends and enjoying the foods that you have been looking forward to cooking and eating all year without making ourselves feel guilty and falling off track with the healthy habits that you put in place and worked hard to maintain. Follow these tips to stay on track over the holiday season: Never go to a party hungry! This can lead to overeating. It’s better to have a balanced breakfast and lunch, rather than go all day without eating. Chose your dining seat wisely! Avoid sitting near the buffet table or at a table where there’s tempting food within arm’s reach. This can easily lead to mindless eating! Be cautious of grazing and portion sizes! Instead of just grabbing handfuls of food (likes cheese, nuts, etc) or appetizers throughout the party, use a plate so you know exactly how much you’re eating. Think and wait before you grab seconds. Eat those special holiday foods that you enjoy! Plan on having a small portion of a favorite food as part of your holiday celebration, without letting the guilt set in. It’s that guilt that can often lead to unhealthy eating behaviors. Be aware of your alcohol intake! If you are drinking alcoholic drinks, it’s easy to lose track of how many you’re having. In between alcoholic drinks, have a glass of water. Stay active throughout the holidays! Although time is precious, keeping up with your activity can help manage stress so try to make time for yourself. Think about scheduling your workouts in your calendar to stay committed. Also, remember that even a 10-minute walk is better than nothing at all! Happy Holidays! Jarrod Russell Jarrod Russell was born and raised in Arkansas. He graduated from Southwest Missouri State University (now known as Missouri State University) in 1998 and from the University of Arkansas School of Law in 2001. For the next nine years, Jarrod practiced law in Arkansas and remains licensed to practice law before all Arkansas federal and state courts. In 2005, Jarrod joined the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was extremely involved in parish life as a Sunday School teacher, GOYA advisor, Greek Food Festival Booth Co-Chair, and assisting the parish priest in the Holy Altar. With the blessing of His Eminence, Metropolitan Nicholas of Detroit, Jarrod left the practice of law and entered Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in the fall of 2010 and will graduate with a Masters of Divinity degree in May of 2014. He has attended St. Vasilios and served as a teacher in the Senior High School Sunday School class since the fall of 2011. Jarrod is extremely grateful to the St. Vasilios community and Fr. Christopher Foustoukos, who is Jarrod’s Spiritual Father, for welcoming him to the parish and treating him like family. The Sisterhood of Saint Makrina would like to thank all parishioners who participated in the food drive for Haven From Hunger. The organization was truly appreciative of our generosity, good will and continued support. May God bless you and yours during this holiday season and beyond. 22 ORTHODOX LIFE - December, 2013 St. Vasilios Church School Highlights: “getting to know the staff” Chris Retelas, Chris Retelas, although a California boy, was actually born in Boston while his father was still a student at Holy Cross. Two months later, upon his father graduating from the seminary, he and his family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area. Being a PK (Priest’s kid), he and his family have moved a number of times, but always being on the west coast. Currently his father is the priest at the Annunciation parish in Sacramento, the place that Chris considers to be his home. He graduated from California State University, Sacramento with a degree in Business Administration in 2010. The following two years, he moved out to New York to be closer to his (now) wife, Kalli, while working in Manhattan for a mechanical contracting company. Chris and his wife Kalli met while on staff at Ionian Village in the summer of 2009. They were married in July, 2012 right before they ended up moving to Boston for Chris to start his studies at Holy Cross. They currently live on campus in the school’s married student housing. Chris, with the blessing of His Eminence, Metropolitan Gerasimos of San Francisco is on track to graduate from Holy Cross with a Masters of Divinity degree in May of 2016. Through his brief time so far with the St. Vasilios community he has felt extremely welcomed and is very excited to grow with the faithful members of this vibrant parish! Michael Sergakis Michael was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. He grew up attending the local parish of Prophet Elias and has always been an active participant in parish life. He participated in GOYA, Church basketball, Greek dancing, Church sponsored Scouts, volunteered at the Parish Festival and often served in the altar during the Divine Liturgy. He began attending Church camps at 13 years old. First attending Camp Emmanuel, of the Denver Metropolis, and also Ionian Village. He attended Ionian Village in 2004 and 2008 as a camper and returned as a staff member in 2011. Michael has participated in organized team sports from his youth. His love for sports began while playing soccer and quickly expanded to include basketball, baseball, track, and football. Combined, he has played in over 28 seasons of sports. His participation in sports taught him lessons about hard work, dedication, and team work that have molded his life. Having graduated high school in 2008, Michael set out to study finance at the University of Utah. However, after 3 years of study he was unsatisfied with his studies and decided to transfer to Hellenic College in the fall of 2011. He graduated from Hellenic College this past May of 2013 with a Bachelors of Religious Studies and is currently enrolled at Holy Cross in the Masters of Divinity program. He is extremely grateful to the parish of St. Vasilios of Peabody for welcoming him with such open arms and making him feel like a long time member of the parish. Xerras Your Support Can Make the Difference Of all human experiences, being forgotten and forsaken must hurt the most. Think of an unwanted child, with parents who don’t care. Can anyone measure the loneliness a little child like this must endure? The unhappy days without love? What is it like to live in a forgotten land, where each day is a struggle to stay alive? Where hunger pits man against child. Where the human spirit fights for one more day to live while the body begs to die. A wretched life of fear and isolation. Abandoned, forsaken by people living in lavish luxury. A church can be forgotten. It can struggle in heartache and despair when numbers, in apathy, choose not to give it their support. When this happens, a church battles to stay alive, wasting time counting pennies instead of doing God’s work. And the children and the hungry are forgotten. But when a church is remembered, God’s work faces a future filled with cheerful, happy, bright days. And the children and the hungry also feel this promise. Your financial support can make the difference. A message brought to you by the Stewardship committee. Please complete your 2014 Stewardship Appeal commitment form recently mailed to your home and return it to our church office. 19 Through the laying on of hands by His Eminence Metropolitan METHODIOS of Boston, Fr.
