Another month has passed and I would like
to welcome the 41 new members who joined
the APA in September.
The yearbooks are out and if you have any
questions or issues, please contact me at the
office. The book was proofed 3 times, but I
realize there are still a few mistakes. One
issue I have in the office is that people move
or change their email address and don’t notify the APA. This also applies to clubs who
change officers and contact addresses.
The APA Annual meet at Knoxville is fast
approaching. Details have been finalized for
the General Meeting to be held at Calhoun’s
Restaurant, 400 Neyland Dr. in Knoxville.
We will start with a pay as you go Prime Rib
& Shrimp Buffet offered by the restaurant
at 7 PM, followed by the general meeting at
8:30PM. If you are unable to attend the dinner, you are welcome to join the meeting.
The Promotion and Sales Committee is
working on a poster and t-shirt to celebrate
this meeting. They are also working on a
Christmas Special to be offered at the show,
both of these specials will be available at the
APA table in Knoxville. If you have a little
free time, I would welcome help at the table,
it’s a good place to meet people as well.
Dues notices will be in the mail late in
November. Please try to renew as soon as
you can and don’t forget to update your contact information if necessary. If your dues
are due on 1/1/2015 and are not paid before
7/1/2015, you will be put on inactive status
and your points and you will lose any points
you have accumulated.
The APA 100th anniversary show will be
held in conjunction with the Ohio National
in Columbus in November, it looks to be a
great show with people from all over the
country. The APA will have a table at the show.
If you would like to pre-order merchandise
for delivery at either Columbus or Knoxville,
please let me know, if you can pick up at the
shows, you will save money on shipping.
It is shaping up to be a busy fall show season around here, so I had better start packing, sometimes it’s hard to put everything in
the truck, it depends on how many birds go,
after all, they are first!!

Happy 100 years to the ABA. I am very
excited to bring this news to you as we anticipate our 2014 National Meet in Columbus, Ohio.
Our hardworking committees have some
great news in that we will be bringing our
Centennial 2014 edition 2014 Bantam Standard with digitally enhanced color photographs. This is a first of it's kind and we are
very proud. The Centennial edition will be
available at the Ohio National . It will be a
hardcover 8.5 x 11 book with the color photographs as well as black and white drawings
and/or photos of all breeds. The cost will
hold at $45.00. Look for this book soon on
our website! We are also offering a mini version of this book as a quick reference. The
2014 Mini will also be available at the show
and on our website in time for Christmas.
At our national meet, we will once again
be featuring our ever popular ABA Breeders
Auction featuring top birds from top breeders. It works this way. The donated birds
will be in cages close to the ABA table with
clearly marked signs on the cages on who
donated them. You can submit your bid on
paper and insert it in the box. The bids remain private. Here is a partial listing of the

Here is some information regarding our
ABA Legbands. If you have not tried them,
why delay - these are highly prized by many
of our top breeders for their durability and
helpfulness in your breeding programs.
ABA Legband information: ABA seamless legbands are best applied to young birds
when the band snugly slides over the foot. If
the band does not come off with a gentle
downward tug, the band is on your bird for
life. If you wait a week or so too long, a dab
of lubricant will help slide the band over the
foot. If you miss the window of banding opportunity, you can use the next larger size
with success. However, appropriately-sized
legbands are not intended to be applied to
mature birds. The best time to apply a seamless legband is dependent upon breed, vari-
ety and sometimes strain, but can be around
5 – 8 weeks of age.
The 2014 legbands can still be ordered,
but the 2015 legbands may be reserved now
during our special pre-order sale. Orders will
be taken on a first come, first served basis
and you will receive the lowest available serial numbers for your requested band sizes.
We do not take requests for specific serial
numbered bands. Pre-orders must be for a
minimum of fifty (50) legbands per band
size. All sizes are $0.38 each and there is a
$5 shipping and handling fee per order. Specific sizes for breeds are located in your
Bantam Standard, the Quarterly and at the
ABA on-line store.
Finally, a special Thank You goes out to
Vickie Harry of Lake City, Florida and Brian
Lewis of Bishopville, Maryland for their
continuous support of the ABA legband program. Both of these dedicated ABA members have ordered about 500 legbands per
year for their proven champion bantams.

However, in my experience, unless both (all)
factors are homozygous, it is not likely that
a fully self-black male will result. The males
seem to require homozygosity for both of
the melanizing factors in order to create a
fully black phenotype. However, on the eb eallele, just these two types of melanizers do
not seem to be sufficient to make the fully
black phenotype in males, which will usually
still show the pheomelanic wing triangle even
with the full gene combination described. For
the brown allele (eb) there seems to be a third
gene (at least) required to make the fully
black male.
As a further consideration, some of the
non-melanized varieties seem to carry a factor that suppresses the expression of melanin in the sex feathering (hackle/saddle/
shoulder) of the males. When this factor(s)

melanizers, even on one of the three more
melanized e-alleles, it can be extremely difficult, even impossible, to create the fully
black phenotype in males. Some attempts to
make self-black varieties in some breeds
seem to be stymied by this type of factor.
I have seen several odd anomalies in relation to self-black phenotypes that make me
believe this is a very complicated subject for
which we have only touched the tip of the iceberg. In one rare instance, involving a line of
black Minorca, there seemed to be only one
melanizing gene in addition to the e-allele
(E). However, I was never able to extract that

sive black complex factors showing only partial expression in females and nearly none in
males. The most melanized expression on a
wheaten base that I have ever witnessed is
found in the Recap breed, which appears to
be a melanized and patterned wheaten. However, I have seen a report of the possibility
of full melanization on a wheaten base.
Several years ago, an article about the Cubalaya appeared in the magazine Backyard
Poultry. In it the author (who’s name I have,
unfortunately, forgotten) stated that he felt I
was wrong when I stated in my book, An Introduction to Color Varieties of the Domestic Fowl, that wheaten was not amenable to
melanization and could not be used as a base
to produce self-black phenotypes. As evidence of this, he sited the black Cubalaya.
He stated that the black Cubalaya emerged
spontaneously from the regular BB Red Cubalaya. This he sites as proof that a black phenotype can occur on the wheaten (eWh) eallele base. I must state that I have never
owned or worked with any black Cubalaya nor
have I ever seen the chicks of such or an adult
in person. I do not know the coloring of the
chick down in black Cubalaya chicks, which
makes any real diagnosis nearly impossible.
As I noted in the above example, I had an
instance where E-downed chicks (that then
grew into near self-black adults) emerged
from breeding confirmed e+/e+ homozygous
siblings that descended from a melanized
male that also showed melanizing anomalies
in some of his offspring. This leads me to
suspect that the black Cubalaya may represent exactly such an effect as I witnessed, and
is not actually a fully melanized wheaten. I
still have to state for the record that I do not
believe that wheaten can be fully melanized
to self-black, but I do believe that this anomalous form of E-downed chicks/self-black
adults can emerge from any of the other ealleles. While I only witnessed this effect on
e+/e+ homozygotes, it is possible that such
could also occur from homozygous eWhbased birds.
One key to making an accurate assessment
of the nature of the black Cubalaya is to examine the chick down. If the chick down is
solid white or white with a bit of faint black
striping on head/back (as in Redcap chicks),
but then the adult bird is self-black, it is possible that there is in fact a melanized form of
wheaten. In such an instance, there could be
a mutation of wheaten (not eWh, but something like a “eWh~M”, as a rough example,
for ‘melanizable wheaten’ that mutated at the
e-locus from eWh) that can be melanized or
there may be a melanizer that is powerful

enough to cover wheaten, either on its own
or in conjunction with other melanizers.
However, if the chick down of the black Cubalaya is black on the back and top of the head
and white under the chin and on the abdomen
or is solid black with a brownish head, then
we are dealing with an E or ER-like e-allele,
as such down is not wheaten. I suspect the
chick down is the diagnostic key to these
self-black Cubalayas, said to have emerged
from eWh (non-E/ER) parent stocks.
Personally, I have never witnessed wheaten
be amenable to melanization, certainly not
full melanization to self-black, however, that
does not mean it is not in the realm of possibility, as I have not worked with every line of
fowl on Earth, nor have I owned, bred or even
seen in person any black Cubalaya, and there
are likely to be mutations that I have never
encountered. However, as I have seen actual
melanized downed individuals arise from the
ma ting of two confirmed homozygous,
duckwing (e+/e+) birds, I suspect this may
also be the more likely explanation for the
seemingly anomalous occurrence of black
Cubalaya arising from BB Red Cubalaya. The
chick down of the black Cubalaya would be a
most important diagnostic tool in determining what type of e-allele is actually at play in
the variety.
In closing, I want to point out that selfblack fowl are very elegant, lovely birds. Selfblack allows the silhouette to really stand out.
As well, a well-bred line of the self-black
variety of any breed is an excellent starting
point for beginners, as long as the males are
sound for melanization in the hackle/saddle/
shoulder, thus implying homozygosity for the
melanization genes. If the males are not
sound in the sex-feathered areas, they can be
very difficult to clean up, in many instances.
Self-black is a very popular variety for showing in many breeds and there are often very
good lines available of the variety in those
breeds. The beginner would do well to work
with such a line. However, I would strongly
discourage beginners from trying to make a
black variety in a breed where none exists, as
it is a complicated variety genetically and can
represent many difficulties that beginners
may find insurmountable.

APA-ABA YOUTH POULTRY CLUB NEWS

Hi Everyone,
It’s show time! How are all of you doing
in the showroom? It seems like the shows
are having a real good turnout from what I
hear.
We’ve added a new section in the for our
members only newsletter so be sure to check
it out. Good advice from some of our poultry judges and other educators.
I don’t have anything exciting to report
from the office end of this business. I’m just
doing all the normal stuff like getting renewal
notices out in the mail, posting your showmanship points, filing and more filing, working on the website still little by little. Unfortunately I’ve had quite a few emails from you
wondering why your points aren’t up to date.
Well, it’s because I’m not getting show reports as fast as you would like. The show secretaries have lots to do getting all of the show
reports out to the APA, the ABA, the breed
clubs and to us. It’s almost impossible to get
all of that paperwork done in a couple of
weeks, especially considering that many of
the show secretaries have jobs and have a family to take care of. Patience is the name of
the game. If you don’t see your points moving up then please contact me and we’ll see
what we can do to fix the problem. Have the
show name, the state and where you placed
ready to give me so I can research further.
If you go to shows that aren’t aware about
sanctioning their showmanship competitions
ask them if they would. They can find the information on our website and also you can
explain that you’re working to gets points so
you can become an advanced showmanship
exhibitor and eventually a showmanship
judge. Many shows aren’t aware that showmanship can be sanctioned so you’ll be helping them out.
I’m heading to Columbus on Nov. 5th for
their big 3 day ABA Centennial. I’ve heard
through he grapevine they have about 9000
birds so far. This is going to be a big show so
all of us are going to get lost in the shuffle
somewhere along the line. I rather like
smaller shows so we don’t get lost in the
shuffle and we have more time to chat with
friends and not miss anyone. The Youth Club
will have a table set up out in the hallway with
lots and lots of other folks so I hope you’ll
find us and stop to see what’s up. You can get
your record books checked and tested while
you’re there too but you’ll need to get it done
on Friday or Saturday. We need time to look
over your book then find time both you and
we can get you tested.
Don’t forget—we have the big youth show
for the APA National in December. That’s in
Knoxville, TN and we have folks coming from
Canada and from coast to coast here in the
US. It’s looking like this is another big one
everyone should try to attend. The youth
show, all the contests and awards are amazing. The Tennessee Valley Poultry group has
some big $$ to hand out to you guys too.

birds before judging and we had quite a group
join us all with the same idea in mind. It was
all worth that hard work, we all placed very
well with our birds and we had such a great
time at the show and came home loaded with
ribbons & rosettes from the Tulsa show.
