West Coast v Western Bulldogs
Eagles to knock out wounded Dogs
ELIMINATION FINAL - Domain Stadium - 8.10pm (Thursday)
The West Coast Eagles take on the visiting Western Bulldogs in a sudden death Elimination Final on
Thursday night at Domain Stadium. For both teams their recent form is a complete contrast, West Coast
are flying after defeating highly fancied flag contenders in the past few weeks, GWS, Hawthorn and the
Adelaide Crows whilst the Western Bulldogs are limping into the finals after a 20 point loss to Fremantle
in their final game of the minor round.
by
Bevan Jones
Bulldogs coach, Luke Beveridge was clearly disappointed in the surprise loss to the Dockers. ‘There was a bit to play for,
we wanted to finish the home and away season on a positive note but nothing went right unfortunately,’ Beveridge said.
One particular reason for concern was the Bulldogs’ horrific ball use, their disposal efficiency was a shocking 46 per cent
and they must fix this up if they are to defeat the West Coast Eagles. The Bulldogs were given a big scare when their key
forward, Tom Boyd injured his ankle in the first term, however he came back on and should be good to go for the
Elimination Final. On a positive note for the Bulldogs, veteran, Matthew Boyd stood tall down back for the Bulldogs with
35 disposals, Tory Dickson was the best forward with 3 goals and Marcus Bontempelli had 27 disposals.
Many pundits wrote the West Coast Eagles off in their clash against Adelaide, particularly with the season ending knee
injury suffered by Nick Naitanui, however in his absence it was a South Australian journeyman, Jonathan Giles who
played one of the games of his life in the ruck. Coleman medallist, Josh Kennedy was superb too kicking 5 goals and he
was given great service all night by midfielders Andrew Gaff who had a career high 41 possessions and Luke Shuey and
Matt Priddis who were also solid contributors.
Eagles coach, Adam Simpson was ecstatic with their third victory in a row against a highly fancied opponent, yet not
surprised by the win. ‘Expectations where we’re at, rated too highly, not rated highly enough – it’s a bit of noise on the
outside, it was more about the process of what we’re going to do and how we were going to go about it,’ Simpson said.
The midfield battle between Shuey, Priddis, Gaff, Dom Sheed and the Dogs, Dahlhaus, Picken and Bontempelli should
be an absolute beauty and will go a long way to deciding the outcome of the game. The Bulldogs should gain Jake
Stringer back and they will need him at his best in the absence of Tom Redpath who suffered a season ending knee
injury a few weeks back. Young forward Tom Boyd needs a big game too as well and if Tory Dickson can chip in with a
few goals then this will give the Dogs a real chance of causing an upset.
West Coast have one of the forward lines of the competition with Mark LeCras, Jack Darling and Josh Kennedy kicking
10 goals between them against Adelaide, this could be another key to the match as the Bulldogs have a young defence,
if the Eagles forward line dominate then things could get ugly for the Dogs.
Unfortunately, I feel that the Dogs have too many injuries and as much as they will put up a good fight I don’t feel like
they are playing well enough to cause an upset. West Coast are playing too well and should move onto the next week of
finals with a clash against either Hawthorn or Geelong in Melbourne next week.

Hawks to keep their hoodoo over Cats
QUALIFYING FINAL - MCG - 7.50pm (Friday)
Geelong and Hawthorn face off in another finals classic on Friday night as they meet at the MCG in the
Second Qualifying Final. The Cats warmed up for their finals campaign last week with a 111-point
thrashing of a disappointing Melbourne, while the Hawks struggled to overcome Collingwood, winning by
the barest of margins.
by
John O’Keefe
Geelong looked impressive as they pushed the insipid Demons aside at home. Never the happiest of
hunting grounds for opposition sides, no doubt Melbourne would not have anticipated conceding eight goals in the first
quarter. The first time Geelong has kicked such a score in a quarter since Round 17, 2014. Melbourne never really
recovered from there and Geelong kept them at arm’s length for the next 2 quarters, until they closed the game out with
a ten goal final term. Possibly the perfect warm up for what is to come. Tom Hawkins returned to form with a six-goal
performance, while Patrick Dangerfield once again displayed his Brownlow Medal winning form.
Hawthorn managed to climb into the top four with a win over the Magpies, thus earning that precious double chance.
The unheralded Jack Fitzpatrick was the match winner, with his running goal enough to put Hawthorn in front, where they
managed to stay for the remainder of the game. It was not a very convincing performance from the reigning premiers as
we head into the major round but a strong second half shows the resilience that still exists within this team. Cyril Rioli
and Luke Breust in particular led the charge both finishing with three goals for the day. The evergreen Sam Mitchell was
his usual self with the usual suspects Rioli, Shaun Burgoyne and Breust providing able assistance.
This is Geelong’s time now. The recruitment done over the last off-season was to put the Cats in this position as they
march into the finals. Dangerfield has been without doubt the outstanding player this season, and if his finals exploits
with Adelaide last year are anything to go by, then it could spell trouble for The Hawks. The one two punch continues
with the captain Joel Selwood who also has been in incredible form this season. From there the midfield group from
Geelong drops off slightly and if the rest of the midfielders do not have significant impact, then it may sway this match.
the Cats recent form in finals is not great as they have one only one finals match since 2011.
Aiming for an unprecedented four flags in a row, the Hawks will be looking to make a statement against Geelong.
Comprehensively beaten by a Patrick Dangerfield led Cats in Round 1, the Hawks will be looking to reaffirm their flag
credentials. Ben McEvoy should return this week and he will be needed against Zac Smith to ensure Geelong do not get
a free ride out of the middle. Like most games, it will be decided there as rumours abound that Scott Selwood will play
this week to tag the prolific former captain Sam Mitchell, and for Geelong’s sake. they will be hoping he succeeds where
many have failed. This week’s situation is familiar for Hawthorn, who is quite comfortable in this environment.
Another chapter in the Hawthorn versus Geelong rivalry will play out this Friday night. There is a case for both sides to
win this game but Hawthorn deserves respect as the reigning premier for the last 3 seasons.

Slick Sydney hold the September aces
QUALIFING FINAL - ANZ Stadium - 3.30pm (Saturday)
The first ever all-Sydney final will be played this weekend when top-of-the-table Sydney clash with the
up-and-coming Giants on Saturday arvo.
Controversially; the Sydney home game has been moved to ANZ Stadium, a ground where Sydney have
only played twice this season, to accommodate the 60,000 supporters expected through the gates.
by
Tony D’Orsi
Both teams have hit peak form in the latter part of the season with some big wins; albeit against the likes of
Brisbane, Port Adelaide, Fremantle, Gold Coast and Richmond – teams who at that stage were more concerned with
planning their end of season trips than playing competitive footy. Still, Sydney’s form has been particularly impressive –
they have been uncharacteristically high scoring while keeping the opposition to limited opportunities. They rightfully go
into the finals as Premiership favourites.
Sydney have a 3-1 win/loss record from their last four clashes with GWS, they also hold a 3-0 record against the Giants
at ANZ Stadium. The last time the two teams met was in round 12, when the Giants smashed Sydney by 42 points to
celebrate their 100th AFL game milestone.
Nothing seemed to go right for the Swans on the day, they looked flat from the first bounce but an injury to Kurt Tippett
in the second quarter broke their back. GWS were then able to get on top in contested ball, beating Sydney at their own
game. After a low scoring first half, the Giants doubled Sydney’s scoring in the second half. Steve Johnson played one of
his best games for his new club; he finished with 27 touches and 2 goals and Greene was the other half forward linkman
who did the damage with 4 goals.
This week, the midfield battle alone makes this game a must watch – arguably the two deepest in the competition;
Sydney have the advantage on the inside and GWS have the speed on the outside. Kennedy, Parker and Hannebery
have got the better of the GWS midfield in the past but the young Giants are rapidly.
One area GWS can get an advantage is up forward – Johnson is a big game player, Cameron has always been a
consistent goal-kicker and Patton appears to have finally found his groove with bags of 6 and 5 in the last two games.
Sydney have an undersized and inexperienced defence with Allir Allir and Callum Mills holding down key spots in their
debut years and this week’s game will be their biggest test.
The problem for the Giants will be getting the ball in there quick enough and often enough to exploit the Swans – Sydney
are a team built for finals football, they are ranked 1st in contested ball and know how to clamp down when the
opposition get a run on.
Sydney has a slight edge on form; but more importantly their players have a wealth of experience in September which
should hold them in good stead. Historically, new clubs have a tendency to crash and burn in their first finals appearance
and that is a real worry for the Giants this week.

Crows to end careers of Boomer and Dal
ELIMINATION FINAL - Adelaide Oval - 7.10pm (Saturday)
Last time I personally predicted a close win for Adelaide over West Coast, and I would like to say…
how wrong was I?! An elimination final was not an expected outcome for Adelaide, although at the start
of the season it would have been a result I was happy with. But now it’s a come down after a potential
top-two finish and the result against North Melbourne this week will define the season.
by
Alexander Jacobs
Adelaide’s confidence has been shaken after the 29-point loss to the Eagles and hopefully the week off has
helped them recover, rather than hurt them. The loss was similar to the Geelong defeat and both games are huge
blows to the Premiership charge. It’s still a possibility in an even top-eight but a trip to Sydney in week two of finals is a
daunting prospect regardless of the opposition.
The biggest surprise in Adelaide’s loss was how poorly they played, looking more like a C-grade squad than a
Premiership contender. Rory Sloane’s absence really impacted the midfield and it was flat all game despite a near-full
strength line-up. Matt Crouch and Rory Laird were the best Crows but after that most struggled including the usually
reliable dual All-Australian Eddie Betts and Sam Jacobs.
Sloane’s return, as an All-Australian, is a massive boost to morale but work still needs to be done. Passes were sloppy
under pressure and the Crows struggled to find a target so they must dictate play this week. West Coast played a fast
paced transition across the ground which left Adelaide’s midfield full of holes and now they need to turn the tables on
North.
North Melbourne comes in so out of form their 9-0 run is long forgotten. Early season wins over Adelaide and Western
Bulldogs remain their only major scalps and the Kangaroos are nowhere near a Premiership position. Sam Gibson and
Ben Brown have been surprise stars this season for the ‘Roos with Gibson getting 29 touches and 10 marks in the
37-point loss to GWS, while Ben Brown had three goals in a career best season. Releasing veteran players may hurt
North more than they imagined with Brent Harvey and Nick Dal Santo still in top form and easily amongst their best.
North’s reasoning is understandable as age is a risk but it may shut the Premiership window rather than open it.
This week Jacobs, Betts, Josh Jenkins and Taylor Walker are just some of the players who need to stand up and take
control. Jacobs struggled against Jonathan Giles and Todd Goldstein will not be any easier while the forward line failed
at a level not seen this season. Richard Douglas and Cam Ellis-Yolmen booting two goals each is great to see, however
the forwards should be leading the way, not them. Don Pyke will have hopefully instilled some confidence in the Crows
who need to start well. They booted the last three goals against the Eagles and clearly still had the energy to compete,
albeit far too late.
Can Adelaide win this week? Yes, definitely. A good start and an early buffer should be all Adelaide needs to kick North
out and there is no room for doubt. Show the hunger and the desire to win and Adelaide will move forward.

AFL Norway - Oslo East Primed For Kenguru Cup Honours
The 2016 AFL Norway season is close to wrapping up with the Oslo East team leading the pack as
premiership favourites. East last won the title in 2014, with the Ås Battlers taking the honours in 2015.
It marks a big turnaround for East after missing the final altogether in 2015, with Oslo West reaching
their first ever Kenguru Cup Grand Final.
Throughout the 2016 season, East have been the dominant side, both on the field with an impressive
array of victories, and off the field with strong numbers which have been responsible for turning the
club’s fortunes around.
Both the Ås Battlers and the Oslo West team have had days where numbers impacted on
performances, though for most of the season West have been the team most likely to mount a
challenge to East. The final round, however, saw the Battlers turn an otherwise disappointing season
around, recording strong wins against both East and West to show promise for next year.
The Grand Final of the Kenguru Cup is scheduled for Saturday 10th September at Voldsløkka in Oslo
with the all-Oslo final between East and West.
From there the national team from Norway will be selected to participate in the Euro Cup, held this
year in Lisbon, Portugal.
The Australian Football story in Norway began in 2005 with the formation of the Oslo Trolls Football
Club but for the next several years the players played in the Sweden West teams, Karlstad Eagles and
Gothenburg Berserkers. The Oslo Trolls play their first match in 2008 against Sweden’s Karlstad Dragons.
In 2009 the As Battlers were formed and matches against the Trolls began and a third team in Tromso
began playing social matches although this team proved to be short lived.
In 2010 AFL Norway was formed and Oslo became the Crows, and Norway Trolls assigned as the
National team name. The Trolls 9.7 (61) defeated Iceland Ravens 4.4 (28) in a 16-a-side friendly in
September the following year, with some Aussies.
2012 saw the Crows split into East and West for a three team local competition and the Trolls debut
with an all-Norway team in the Euro Cup 9’s winning the Euro Plate Final, and repeating that effort in
the 2014 competition. Meanwhile the Crows continued playing in Sweden’s West League through 2011
to 2014.
Norway fielded both men’s and women’s teams in 2015 Euro Cup 9’s in Umag, Croatia, the men
defeating the Peace Team* for 11th place and the Lady Trolls taking 5th place with a win over Sweden
Ravens.
AFL Norway can boast around 65 men and women registered players in 2016.
*Peace Team: a team made up from Israelis and Palestinians in equal numbers first formed in 2008
that has contested IC08 and IC14.

South Adelaide v Adelaide Crows
Panthers and Brett Eddy ready for Crows
Adelaide Oval - 12.10pm (Saturday)
After elimination finals we are left with four teams remaining in the semi finals. South Adelaide,
Adelaide, Eagles and Sturt. This article will be focussing on the main points, history and likely
results of the first match of the semi finals. South Adelaide vs Adelaide.
From a past perspective, as well as a player analysis of the teams, it seems as though South
Aethan Murrell
Adelaide will reign victorious and will make it through to the finals. They were able to finish second
on the ladder, and they were unable to claim first place as they had less favourable percentages than the
Eagles (both teams were on 28 points).
by
South Adelaide have also won 4 of their last 5 matches leading up to the finals, one of which was against
Adelaide, where they were able to win by an impressive margin of 38 points (100-62). This victory was only
2 rounds ago, so each team has only faced one other side and now they’re coming up against each other in an
all out onslaught for a place in the finals.
The ever impressive, Brett Eddy is now sitting on 71 goals in 19 matches, if rounded up, Eddy is scoring an
average of 4 goals per game. It’s clear that this is the man who is winning South Adelaide games and who has
gotten them into the semi finals. His performance will decide whether or not South Adelaide will make it to the
finals or not.
So far, very few teams have been able to shut down this powerhouse forward, including Adelaide, who have
failed time and time again throughout the season to stop him from adding to his increasingly impressive goal
tally.
Adelaide need to bulk up their defence and watch Eddys movements, otherwise, Eddy alone may end up
continuing his average and scoring four crucial goals which may be the ones which get South Adelaide through
to the finals.
Like the Panthers, Adelaide has had 4 victories in the last 5 games. With a win against Central District (125-53),
which enabled them to conquer the elimination finals and move through to the semi finals. I have mentioned
before in previous articles how Adelaide have been unlucky this season, I stand by that statement. If they’re
able to not only shut down Brett Eddy, but also utilize their variety of talented forward players, they may be able
to not only give South Adelaide a tough time, but may steal a victory. Adelaide has nearly defeated South
Adelaide before, in a nail biting 90-91 loss. With this in mind, its entirely possible that Adelaide pull it together
for one last effort and make it into the SANFL grand final.
Tip - South Adelaide by 1 - 12 points

The Eagles come in as favourites to beat the Double Blues in their semi final clash this weekend, but write
off Sturt at your peril. While the Eagles rested last week, Sturt earned a hard fought win against the
favoured Panthers on the back of a tremendous defensive performance. After a shaky close to the season,
Sturt were on the cusp of breaking down at the wrong time of the season, and many were starting to write
by
Dan Crouch
them off. Their last four games of the season were two uncompetitive losses to fellow finalists, a draw, and
a 4 point win both against non-finals teams they probably should have thrashed. Yes, Sturt found many doubters over the
last month of the season, but they have to be back on the bandwagon after seeing their team’s performance at Adelaide
Oval last weekend.
But just as Sturt had unconvincing form, the Eagles may face the same issue. With top spot already locked up going into
the final round, the Eagles suffered a surprise loss to Norwood before their bye in the first week of finals. By the time they
take the field against Sturt, it will be 3 weeks since their last good game, which is very unfamiliar territory for the team
who set the benchmark all season.
Not only have the Eagles been the best team this year, but they have also been the most dominant. They have
comprehensively beaten nearly every weak team that has stood in their way, while also getting the job done against the
top tier teams. No team has had fewer bad performances than the Eagles in 2016. But for all the dominance the Eagles
have displayed in completely shutting down opponents, Sturt have quietly achieved a similar feat from a defensive point
of view. It hasn’t just been their back 6, it’s also been the midfield and their consistent tackling pressure and refusal to
give away easy uncontested possessions.
Though Sturt have thrived defensively, their forward line has also been impressive boasting the equal second leading
goal kickers through the regular season in Kory Beard and Mark Evans with 48 goals each. The two forwards might be
the key to victory for Sturt, as they will likely need to kick a big score to win.
All things considered, this game will be a bit of a mystery. While the Eagles were the most dominant team all year, and
Sturt looked to have the best defensive mindset, the roles were at times reversed. The Eagles allowed the fewest points
this season, proving their defence can be just as strong as Sturt’s. You could argue that it’s even stronger, but realistically
the number of points allowed was as low as it was because their opponents couldn’t even get their hands on the footy
some weeks due to the slick clearance work out of the middle. Sturt had 2 players register 48 goals each for the season,
there’s no doubt they can kick more than a winning score and be more than a defensive juggernaut.
With Sturt’s defensive minded midfielders and elite tacklers going head to head with the Eagles’, and the Eagles’ back
6 trying to stop 2 powerhouse forwards, it’s hard to pick a winner, and frankly it’s hard to predict much about the outcome
or general style of this one. Despite Sturt’s bounce back last week, they still need another win to truly prove themselves.
Tip - Eagles by 13 - 25 points

Richmond spill does more harm than
good for Tigers
CLICK ON THE FOOTY PROPHET LOGO ABOVE TO TAKE YOU DIRECT TO THEIR SPORTS MEDIA WEBSITE
It’s September, and as every die-hard Richmond fan knows, it’s a time when the club is back in the
limelight for all of the wrong reasons.
Damien Peck
Richmond members have every right to be frustrated, angry and upset after a year from hell. The team under
performed while several players and coaches have already been shown the door.
However, a rebel group known as “Focus on Footy”, headed by cardiologist Dr Martin Hiscock, have threatened a
club board that has arguably achieved more than any other Tiger board in 35 years.
A board spill apparently 18 months in the making – while the Tigers were winning games and making finals – has
seen a group that have been living in the past try to take control of a board that has been resilient and stable under
pressure for years.
The stability that has been delivered with a plan for success may have hit a hurdle this season, but have all the
signs for success in the future – if people at Punt Road can still believe in it.
LACK OF VISION FOR NEW BOARD
Without clear direction and positive reasons to step in and take control, the rebel group have signs of breaking
down. Without an alternative, where is the plan? Do the Focus on Footy group even want change and what do they
stand for?
The vision lacks substance, and the sense of entitlement to run a football club from past premiership players
appears thin. Suddenly, the last premiership captain of the club, Bruce Monteith, alongside Bryan Wood want to run
the football department while serving on
the board. The times have changed
since 1980, and playing good football 35
years ago does not equate to being a
smart businessman in the football
industry.
Philip Allison, Margaret Kearney,
Dr David Marsh and Ingrid Williams are
supporting the ticket, however the group
may have played out the coup in the
wrong way with their negative public
manner. What they need to be doing –
not unlike the current board – is selling
the vision for next year and beyond.
Recent pushes for board positions have
been flawed, as challenges in the past

month include Joe Russo being shunned, as well as “the Malvern group” known as the Richmond Rollercoaster
flawed without a clear plan.
UNITY THE KEY TO STABILITY
The current board has been tough and resilient for many years since their plan came together with Peggy O’Neal
and Brendan Gale leading the charge. The claim by the Focus on Footy group say that the current board lacks
diversity – however, it is well argued that the Tigers board is one of the most diverse among all of the AFL clubs –
after all, the only female President in the league is currently at the club. A dynamic amount of skills are inevitable no
matter whether it’s a football club or a private business and that is what the current board has.
Current vacant positions on the board allow for a mature process for the subsequent group to mount a challenge to
change the future for Richmond. However, threatening a stable club by a small group of members has a sense of
arrogance and greed, forcing the hand of CEO Brendan Gale. An extraordinary general meeting is almost inevitable
as the rebel group look likely to get the signatures needed to force the unfavourable event.
The plan for the group is to dictate how a coach controls his team. Not only is it selfish, but it removes all trust from
the board to let the man they put in place to coach a team. That is what they employ the best in the business for
after all.
NEIL BALME HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER, BUT WHAT ELSE?
When a club board is overthrown, there is rarely success
afterwards. It takes a long time to rebuild, and as Football GM,
Dan Richardson (someone that Dr Martin Hiscock publicly
said he will keep on) said, “We didn’t think Richmond fans
would accept an eight-year rebuild.”
Neil Balme
But is this board prepared to sell that to the record 72,379
members and expect it to stick? To tell Richmond fans that
the club is in crisis is an overstatement from the amount of
work that has been put in by Gale, O’Neal and the current
board. When was the last successful board spill? None
immediately spring to mind.
The Neil Balme factor poses an interesting twist. Upon the
announcement at Leo Berry’s Boxing Gym in Richmond,
Hiscock admitted the group had not spoken to Balme – the
biggest selling point they say they have. By all reports, the
former Tiger doesn’t even want to be mentioned in the same
sentence as the board spill.
According to the Hiscock, a future meeting has been set
up with Balme – who has a contract at Collingwood – but
if the current board were to appoint Balme, it would leave
the rebel group without a real alternative.

THE COACH
The body of Damien Hardwick’s work from 2013-2015 is what was delivered after years of rebuilding. Building a
club list takes time. Over the course of three years a record of 42 wins, and 27 losses speaks volumes, albeit
without a finals win. The man can coach.
Tiger fans will continue to dare-to-dream that Hardwick’s coaching ability is comparable to the beginning of 2007 for
Bomber Thompson. Well remembered, Thompson was essentially only a loss or two away from getting the sack in
his ninth year as coach at the start of the season, before a 15-game winning streak and a premiership led him to
build one of the strongest playing lists for the past decade. Hardwick, like many Tigers fans are still waiting for
the turn.
Hiscock and the Focus on Footy are vying for a ticket that doesn’t support the coach – even though they are
unprepared to pay Hardwick under the current contract. An internal review is almost complete with announcements
imminent in the near future, however, Hiscock believes the matter is irrelevant.
The biggest ticket the board has so far is to instate a newly created position under the title of CEO of Football. It’s
perhaps the only initiative that actually makes sense. However, the impending internal review is pointing towards a
movement to instate a similar position under a different name.
MOVING FORWARD TO 2017
O’Neal and Gale have been very mature in making
sound decisions throughout the whole process by staying
the course with stable governance. It cannot be disputed
that several members of the board have been in place for
more than a decade, but it has been light years since
there has been such a united approach to keeping the
club together.
Brendan Gale
Right now, a cloud hanging over the boardroom at Punt
Road does not breathe a selling point to any potential
free agents, but the sooner the off-field indiscretion is
dealt with, the better the club will be.
Stables boards don’t happen overnight, but the last thing
the Richmond Football Club needs right now is five more
years of instability after finally getting it right. After all, the
captain Trent Cotchin and coach both said in recent
months, “We don’t ride emotional roller coasters’.

WA Under 18s Wrap

A rare sunny Saturday greeted the players for the first week of WAFL finals. 18 of the 23 rounds this
season have been affected by rain so the fine weather was widely appreciated. There was only one
U/18 player in the seniors this weekend, and for him it was a brief taste of the finals. As mentioned last
week, those players who play for teams that didn’t qualify for the top five returned to play in the Colts.
Jason Harris
SENIORS
Sam Powell-Pepper - East Perth
Seven possessions, two marks, two inside 50s, one tackle, one behind.
A very quiet day for Powell-Pepper. However, he was not helped by the terrible way the ball was delivered to the
East Perth’s forward line during the game. Seemed to get a run in the midfield late in the contest but had minimal
impact. Chalk this one down as a very good, albeit tough learning experience. With the Royals eliminated
Powell-Pepper will likely return to the Colts to get
more finals experience.
RESERVES
Tim English - South Fremantle
20 possessions, nine marks four inside 50s,
29 hit-outs.
Sam Powell-Pepper
South Fremantle senior coach Todd Curley said on
Saturday morning that English made a real good
impact in his senior debut, but pulled up a little sore.
Curley said the decision was made not to risk him in
the heat of a qualifying final. However English was
determined to play a game this week, and had
another impressive performance in the Reserves.
Asked who English reminded him of, Curley said
there was some similarities to Dean Cox in the way
he moved around the ground, and felt comfortable in
possession of the ball. English may still be in seen in
the Seniors as the finals progress.
COLTS
Shai Bolton - South Fremantle
17 possessions, five marks, two tackles, one
inside 50, four goals, one behind.
Despite playing in a side that was comfortably beaten
on the day, Bolton was again one of the best players

on the ground. Bolton was not getting the full reward on the scoreboard due to his inaccuracy. It is something he
has rectified in the last few weeks. Overall Bolton has kicked 33 goals in 14 Colts games this season.
Bailey Banfield - Claremont
32 possessions, five tackles, four marks, six inside 50s.
Banfield was superb again on Saturday and no doubt his confidence is sky high by his spell in the senior side at the
end of Claremont’s season. Has averaged 26.25 possessions in 12 games at the Colts level in 2016.
Jake Waterman - Claremont
16 possessions, eight marks, two inside 50s,one goal, three behinds.
Although inaccurate in front of goal, Waterman proved to be a really strong target around the ground. Like Banfield,
the senior experience he gained towards the end of
the season seems to given him a lot of confidence.
Sam Petrevski-Seton - Claremont
25 possessions, five marks, six tackles,
eight inside 50s.
No senior footy for Petrevski-Seton in 2016 due to a
few untimely injury setbacks, but he has starred at
Colts level. In his ten games this season
Petrevski-Seton has averaged 23.2 possessions,
four marks and five tackles a game. The midfielder
has not hit the scoreboard as much as he would like,
only kicking one goal.
Matt Guelfi - Claremont
19 possessions, six tackles, four inside 50s,
two goals, two behinds.
Guelfi’s numbers at Colts level this year are also very
impressive with the midfielder currently averaging 25
possessions and 6.4 tackles a game. With the win
against South Fremantle, Claremont has earned a
berth in the second semi final against top placed
Perth next week with the winner progressing to the
Grand Final.

Morrish Medal and TAC Cup Team of the Year
CLICK ON THE FOOTY PROPHET LOGO ABOVE TO TAKE YOU DIRECT TO THEIR SPORTS MEDIA WEBSITE
Vic Country and North Ballarat midfielder Hugh McCluggage has won the 2016 Morrish Medal, polling 16
votes from only 10 games to become the first Rebel player to win the coveted individual award.
Craig Byrnes
The likely number one draft pick finished two votes clear of Gippsland Power’s Callan McKeon and
Dandenong Stingray’s Daniel Allsop who both finished on 14 votes. Northern Knight’s defender Mason Blakely and
Sandringham’s Goy Lok rounded out the top five with 12 and 11 votes respectively.
Hugh McCluggage has had a prolific season for the North Ballarat Rebels, averaging 29 possessions at a high efficiency
rate of 70% and has regularly impacted the scoreboard with 23 goals. After winning the Vic Country MVP award at the
National Championships, the South Warrnambool product returned to North Ballarat as the form Victorian based player
and lifted to another level by the end of the home and away rounds.
Equal runner-up McKeon was the surprise packet of the night, polling 12 votes in the final seven rounds to nearly
overtake McCluggage. Standing at just 163cm, McKeon is the pocket rocket of the Gippsland midfield and is constantly
lauded for his determination to impact any contest. He only turned 17 in July and will be hungry for another try at the
award in his top age year.
Daniel Allsop also threatened to win the medal late, but failed to poll in the final round to finish level with McKeon as
worthy second placers. The clever small forward has had an outstanding season for Dandenong, kicking 28 goals from
17 games and earning a State Combine invitation.

The competition team of the season was announced on Sunday night at the Morrish Medal function with an evenly
selected spread of players. The Eastern Rangers produced the highest number with five, followed by Sandringham with
three, as the Western Jets, Northern Knights, Oakleigh Chargers, Dandenong Stringrays, Geelong Falcons and Murray

There were no real surprise selections in the 24 man squad, but Ben Ainsworth, Jarrod Berry and Lachlan Walker were
noticeable absentees. Oakleigh Charger’s Michael Stinear has been named coach. The final team can be seen below:

The Prophet Five: Rucks

In a new series, seven Footy Prophet writers provide their opinions as to who is the best current
player in each position. Over the next few weeks, we will look at Key Defenders, General Defenders,
Sam Kimber
Midfielders, Rucks, Small Forwards and finally, Key Position Forwards. In this series, our writers

What separates the top echelon of rucks in the AFL is not
only their ability to give an armchair ride to their midfield,
but also their contribution around the ground. Gawn has
been the top tap ruckman this year and his work around
the ground has been top notch with his contested marking
a true feature of his game. Goldstein’s form isn’t as brilliant
as it was last year. Jacobs and Mumford are more the
old-school rucks, happy to bruise in the middle and handball
to their better mids but their value can’t be underestimated.
Nic Nat needs a good run at it because when he is firing he
is nigh on unstoppable.

Max Gawn set lofty goals earlier in the year, wanting to be
the best ruckman in the game and I believe he’s done it.
Struggled early against other big bodied rucks, Gawn soon
took his game to another level. It’s his performances in
Melbourne’s wins when the going was tough that set him
apart, he has the cult celebrity factor also. Goldstein is the
best ruckman in the league when things are going well,
only things haven’t been going well for North of late. Brodie
Grundy has delivered his best year. Mummy stayed
relatively injury free.

Gawn’s season has been remarkable, leading all ruckmen for average hit-outs and will rightly be All-Australian this year.
Grundy continues to make his mark on the competition, ranked number one for contested possessions amongst ruckmen
who have played 20 games or more. Despite an injury interrupted year Naitanui still commands a position in my top five,
his dynamic ability is unprecedented. Tippett too is one of the few genuine ruckmen capable of playing a key forward
position. While Mumford’s tackling and contested possession work is second to none and a massive reason the Giants
will be playing off for a preliminary final spot.

It can be argued that a ruckman is the most valuable
member of a team – most of the 18 of teams in the AFL
would be in serious strife should their lead big man go down.
Gawn has made number one his own and is undisputed at
the top. No Mumford = No Giants. Although this isn’t as true
as it once was, big Mummy at his best is absolutely crucial to
GWS’ success. Nic Nat’s injury will hurt West Coast, on
talent alone he leads them all. Similar to Mumford, Jacobs is
arguably Adelaide’s most important player. Finally, Grundy is
the most improved ruckman in the comp this year and his
rise has been rapid.

I’m a huge fan of ruckmen that can move well around the

unlucky to miss out being Stef Martin, but his year was

Gawn has been the most dominant ruckman all season and his All-Australian selection is vindication of that. Goldstein
holds his place after another solid year, yet was shadowed by the enigma of Gawn. Grundy fits in at number three given his
pedigree in the ruck at such a young age. He is mobile around the ground and hasn’t skipped a beat since U18 level.
Naitanui’s selection is due to his aerial ability and the impact
he has on game, especially in those big moments. A full
Todd Goldstein
season would have seen him higher on the list. Tippett beats
out Sam Jacobs and Shane Mumford given his ability to have
a hefty impact on the game in the ruck and down forward and
essentially, is the perfect ruckman for a two-ruck combination.
Although it maybe the Collingwood supporter in me, I’m
going for Brodie Grundy at number one followed ever so
closely by Max Gawn at two. Gawn is deservedly ranked
number one, but 22-year old ruckmen shouldn’t be able to
do what Grundy has done this season. I’ve gone for Goldstein at three despite his pretty average form of late as he is
obviously playing injured, while coming in fourth is Shane
Mumford. His importance to the Giants has been well documented and is ranked third for hitouts and first among ruckmen for tackles. Rounding out my top five is Sam Jacobs,
who has done a terrific job feeding the Crows’ midfield this
season.

Brayden Fiorini: The Making of the Next Bont
CLICK ON THE FOOTY PROPHET LOGO ABOVE TO TAKE YOU DIRECT TO THEIR SPORTS MEDIA WEBSITE
OMay 10, 2015 may have been the day which changed Brayden Fiorini’s career forever. TAC Cup ladder
leaders Ballaratt Rebels played host to Fiorini’s Northern Knights at Eureka Stadium, a match which ended
Anthony Wingard
in a 75 point drubbing of the away side.
During the match, then Knights’ Captain Jade Gresham was pushed forward for much of the game, leaving a discernible
hole in the midfield where he was usually deployed.
As a result, and in a bid to firm his talent as AFL standard, Head Coach Andrew Shakespeare decided to throw Fiorini into
the centre after playing most of the 2014 and 2015 seasons on a wing or across half-back.
Despite the score-line, Fiorini recorded six clearances in a standout performance which cemented his place as a true
midfielder from thereon in.
Until that game, questions had been raised about Fiorini’s ability to win his own ball, particularly in contested situations. It
was a similar masterstroke on Shakespeare’s behalf which saw Marcus Bontempelli elevate his game, and who is now
one of the AFL’s best and most exciting players.
“We did a similar thing with Bontempelli two years ago,
taking him off a wing and putting him into the midfield and
he just blossomed,” Knights’ talent manager Peter
Kennedy noted in 2015 (Source: Herald Sun).
In his ten games in the TAC Cup, Fiorini averaged an even
30 disposals with a kick to handball ratio of 2.1:1, 8.8
marks and 3.7 tackles per game. His fantasy scores didn’t
deter either, averaging 130.3 in Victoria’s premier U18
competition – the highest of any player – which included
eight scores above his average.
He finished second in the Northern Knights’ 2015 Best and
Fairest, only behind Gresham to which he was second in
charge as Vice-Captain of the side.
The stage for the AFL Draft was set, and Fiorini loomed as
a safe second round selection.
But like Bontempelli twelve months prior, he was shaping
as a late bolter. The Gold Coast Suns agreed, with
Fiorini’s name being called out with the 20th pick in the
draft – a selection received from Fremantle in the Harley
Bennell trade and two places behind former teammate
Gresham.
His short tenure at the Suns thus far has come with its ups
and downs however.
Spending the beginning of the season in the NEAFL,
Fiorini made an immediate impact. He was the leading

possession winner on the ground with 30 touches while also kicking two of the Suns’ eight goals in their narrow Round 1
loss to the Northern Territory.
Two weeks later against the Brisbane Lions’ reserves, Fiorini attempted a tackle, but landed awkwardly, rupturing his lateral
collateral ligament. He was placed on the club’s long-term injury list and wasn’t seen on a football field until mid-July.
He was managed in his first NEAFL game back – a Round 16 loss away to Sydney, but has since resumed his place as a
workhorse of the Suns’ midfield. The booming left foot kick has been a standout for the Suns’ reserves this season,
averaging 30.2 disposals, 7.8 marks, 4.2 tackles and 2.25 goals again, accumulating to a fantasy average of 129.8 in the
games where he wasn’t injured or managed.
After a rich vein of form in the NEAFL post-injury, Fiorini was called up and named in Gold Coast’s side to face
Collingwood in Round 22, debuting at Etihad Stadium on a Saturday night.
Starting the match slowly, with five disposals before half time, Fiorini worked his way into the match. He finished with 17
disposals at a respectable 70.6% efficiency.
It was a worthwhile debut for the midfielder, yet his form in the NEAFL and TAC Cup in years suggested he was capable
of more once he adjusted to the pace of the AFL.
Fiorini held his place within the team heading into Gold Coast’s Round 23 game with Port Adelaide – both team’s final
games for the season.
In the week leading up to the game, Dion Prestia and Jaeger O’Meara both declared their intentions to seek a trade away
from the Gold Coast in the offseason, meaning the midfield, often touted as one of the best in the league when all players
are fit, was reduced significantly.
At the 2015 draft, a few draft gurus noted the Suns’ selection of Fiorini as an insurance policy should other midfielders
seek a trade. Yet against Port Adelaide Fiorini arrived and proved he was more.
Unlike a week prior, Fiorini had an impact from the outset, as a regular at the centre bounces for the Suns.
He was one of the Suns’ best. He finished with 32 disposals, 12 tackles – both team highs, five clearances, 27 pressure
acts, seven score involvements and 166 AFL Fantasy points.
Yet the real highlight came in the third quarter. Sam Day crumbed his own contest after a wayward Brandon Matera shot
on goal, dishing the ball out to Fiorini who snapped truly on his favoured left foot and sealing his first career goal.
Eight minutes later, he was amongst it again, receiving a handball from Tom Lynch before steadying for his second from
an identical spot. What followed will likely live with him for years as he was able to celebrate with best mate Darcy
Macpherson, who Fiorini has spent playing with as Northern Knights teammates in the TAC Cup.
His performance was commended by Head Coach Rodney Eade in post-match press conference, who stated, “the future
is bright for both Brayden and the Club,” a glowing statement considering the events leading up to the game regarding
other Suns’ personnel.
Only two games into his career, and if his most recent performance is any indication, the auspicious potential for Gold
Coast’s Brayden Forini, who this year also penned a two year contract extension with the club, is endless

Can you smell the freshly cut grass? Can you feel the spring sun rising? It’s a feeling that makes most
nervy, for some a whole new experience, for others a return to the main stage, for five clubs a chance at
redemption, for Hawthorn history beckons.
Dave Cardamone
Heading into the 2016 Toyota AFL Final Series here is my team by team finals preview in the premiership season ladder
order of what will be an intriguing and fascinating finals series.
SYDNEY SWANS
First Qualifying Final v Greater Western Sydney, Saturday September 10, 3:20pm at ANZ Stadium
The AFL will have its biggest stage in Sydney week one of finals as the two cross-town rivals face off in their first derby
final. The Swans last meeting against the Giants will be fresh in their memories having lost to their cross-town rivals by
42 points.
The minor premiers finished the season in hot form winning six in a row including four by 67 points or more, albeit North
Melbourne were their only top-eight opponent in that time. Some may doubt their lead in, lacking a real finals opponent
but with so much experience and talent in their side it’s hard not to see them competing on the main stage.
Having missed just one finals campaign since 2003, experience will see them edge the Giants in a close tussle then it’s a
home preliminary final that awaits.
Are they contenders? The Swans are a genuine premiership threat
GEELONG
Second Qualifying Final v Hawthorn, Friday September 9, 7:50pm at the MCG
Geelong returns to the finals after a one-year hiatus, and similarly like the Swans last faced a fellow finals’ contender a
month ago. However you would be silly to dismiss their final four credentials. They have lost only two games to top eight
contenders this season – the Swans in Round 16 by 38-points and the Giants back in Round 2 by 13-points.
However, since then have developed even more midfield depth with the taddition of Sam Menegola, who in his short six
game career has averaged 25 disposals. From the team that was scintillating on the weekend they also have Scott
Selwood, Nakia Cockatoo as well as the versatile Lachie Henderson who has been rejuvenated this year to add to their
lineup.
Are they contenders? There’s no doubt they’re a chance, the qualifying final against Hawthorn will make or
break their premiership hopes.

HAWTHORN
Second Qualifying Final v Geelong, Friday September 9, 7:50pm at the MCG
Hawthorn will begin their finals’ campaign on the cusp of history. No team has won four consecutive premierships since
the feat was achieved in the VFL/AFL by Collingwood in 1927-30.
In contrast to the teams above them, the Hawks have been far from convincing over the last month. Losses to Melbourne
and West Coast, an easy win over North Melbourne and a one-point triumph over Collingwood sees them in unfamiliar
territory. Not since 2011, have they entered a finals series without overwhelming favouritism, and without two of their
dangerous key forwards the former Hawk now Swan Lance Franklin and the injured Jarryd Roughead.
Are they contenders? You never write the Hawks off, they are a champion club and if they were to create history,
they would be deserving of it.
GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY
First Qualifying Final v Greater Western Sydney, Saturday September 10, 3:20pm at ANZ Stadium
It’s a historic first finals series for the Giants in which they face cross-town rivals the Sydney Swans. A fascinating contest
it will be with the Giants the number two attacking team in the competition, averaging 108.2 points a game up against the
Swans, who are ranked number one in defence conceding just 66.8 points a game.
They play an exciting brand of football and have a plethora of talented footballers, and not just in their midfield, as they
also have the pace of Zac Williams and class of Devon Smith at either end. With no expectations they have nothing to
lose, and will have a serious say in how the upcoming finals series is shaped.
Are they contenders? Finals experience does count for a lot, as talent can only take the Giants as far as a
preliminary final
ADELAIDE
First Elimination Final v North Melbourne, Saturday September 10, 7:10pm at Adelaide Oval
The Crows have had an exceptional year with a league-high six players selected in the All-Australian 40-man squad.
This includes Rory Sloane, Josh Jenkins and Eddie Betts – the latter having a career best 66-goal season.
Skipper Taylor Walker leads the competition for effective kicks inside 50 going at 66.2%, and is a big reason why the
Crows were the number one attacking team averaging 112.9 points a game.
They would have learned a lot from their last home and away match of the year, losing at home to the Eagles and will be
keen to make amends for letting the opportunity to finish top four slip away. A win against North Melbourne is expected
then an away semi-final in Sydney against the Swans or Giants awaits.
Are they contenders? Will need to cause an upset to get through to a Preliminary Final, without that home
ground advantage this is where their season will end.

WEST COAST
Second Elimination Final v Western Bulldogs, Thursday September 8, 6:10pm at Domain Stadium
The Eagles could not have done anymore the last month, winning all four of their matches including three against fellow
finals contenders with their away win against Adelaide in the last round of the season their most impressive.
Last year’s Grand Finalists have plenty of fire power up forward with Coleman medallist Josh Kennedy leading the way,
and a compelling midfield brigade led by Matt Priddis.
It will be interesting to see how far they can go however with Nic Naitanui out for the season and Scott Lycett managing a
PCL injury to his knee. The home ground advantage has never been so important as they look to win through to the
second week of finals.
Are they contenders? It’s pretty hard to see them getting past the loser of Hawthorn or Geelong
WESTERN BULLDOGS
Second Elimination Final v West Coast, Thursday September 8, 6:10pm at Domain Stadium
A lot of individuals in the football industry have had their reservations about the AFL’s introduction of a bye before the
finals series, including Luke Beveridge before he had to deal with his sides current injury toll. Tom Liberatore, Jack
Macrae, Jordan Roughead and Easton Wood are all in a race against time to be fit for their do or die elimination final.
The Bulldogs have had an incredible year playing some gallant football despite losing skipper Robert Murphy early in the
piece, and will have to be at the top of their game if they are going to upset the Eagles in Perth.
It doesn’t get any easier if they win though, their reward a massive challenge against either Hawthorn or Geelong.
Are they contenders? Struggle to see them getting past the Eagles, they’re not without a chance though.
NORTH MELBOURNE
First Elimination Final v Adelaide, Saturday September 10, 7:10pm at Adelaide Oval
On the back of a 9-0 start to the season, North Melbourne will travel to Adelaide Oval having won just two games since
the bye. They did not win a game at all during August and seemingly have their backs against the wall.
With the announcement that Brent Harvey, Drew Petrie, Nick Dal Santo and Michael Firrito will no longer be a part of the
club’s future plans, the Kangaroos have it all to play for and must win through to a preliminary final if home fans are to get
a chance to say goodbye. They could see the return of Scott Thompson and Jarrad Waite adding some much needed
structure for what would be their best win of the season.
Are they contenders? Simply not enough fire power up forward to go head to head with Adelaide.

YOUR WEEEKLY “BIBLE” OF
SOUTH AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL
Well so ends the longest week of my life. Sure, I got a few things done that I’d been putting off for
a while like last year’s Spring clean, the dishes, and I found the vacuum but couldn’t start it because
I didn’t have any two stroke but it should never have come to this. My weekend should have been
full of AFL finals football. I thought that was the point of September, so that the best eight sides
could get down to the serious business of winning the flag. No more show boating by pounding the
non-contenders by 100+ points, no this was when the big boys were supposed to come out and play.
by
Ben Brady
But alas, AFL grounds across the nation fell silent for reasons I am unable to comprehend.
And what a free kick the AFL has given to every other code struggling to get a look in. Suddenly, twitchy eyes start
looking for other things to yell at and maybe they find the NRL, English Premier League, The Vuelta a Espana,
One-day Cricket, heaven forbid the US Open. The point is, in a world saturated by sport there is literally something
for everyone. Everyone is competing for viewers, for advertising dollars, for market share so why would the AFL
give all these other competitors a free kick? It beggars belief.
When round 23 played out the way it did, it set up a mouth-watering first week of finals football. Geelong v Hawks
is a block buster on any day of the year and an all Sydney final; you can’t script that. Adelaide, who thought they
were cruising for a home final got overtaken now have to beat the Roos just to stay alive, and last year’s runners
up, West Coast finds itself in a do or die final against a Bulldog’s side that refuses to lie down. This is a dream
finals series. There is plenty of intrigue and interest. There are the old stagers going for four on the trot and the
flash new punks looking to upset the apple cart. There is so much heart break and elation left in the season so
why put it off for a week?
This reminds me of when you’re right into a television series and the network starts changing the start times.
One week it’s on at 8:30 Monday and the next week it’s buried at 10:30 on a Saturday. It’s annoying. Rather than
be inconvenienced, you wait for the box-set to get released, pirate a copy, or give up and go and do something
else. That’s what the AFL is risking. It’s risking biting the hand that feeds it. Your average punter may wear the odd
inconvenience but take him for granted and you risk losing him altogether.
The season is long. It must be tempting to rest players if there is nothing to be gained other than injury. But that is
a luxury that is earned through hard work and dedication. Team management should be able to freshen up a squad
in any way it sees fit. It’s not tanking, it’s best practice. If you want to be remembered for ever, win the last game of
the year not round 23. The AFL does not need to, nor should it, interfere with the natural course of a season by
artificially freshening up finalists by giving them a state-sanctioned holiday.
Momentum in football is a precious commodity and if you’ve got some you don’t want to waste it on the training
track. GWS, Sydney, Geelong and West Coast all finished strongly and deserved to ride their momentum into the
finals rather than sit around and wait for the others to catch up. That’s football, it’s the true beautiful game; let’s not
tinker with it if it’s not broken.
For what it’s worth I think the Swans will salute in the big one by four goals against the Hawks.

Why they can win the flag? And Why they can’t?
Sydney
Why they can…
Sydney is arguably the most talented team in the competition, and have been for
several seasons – 2016 is their time to strike. The Swans midfield is tough and relentless, JoshbyTeakle
and their forward line is spectacular. Sydney prides themselves on their ability to strangle
their opposition with a full team relentless effort. Their midfield combination of Luke Parker, Josh
Kennedy, Dan Hannebery, Jarrad McVeigh and Kieran Jack work better together then any opposition
side. And it’s always handy having Lance Franklin or Kurt Tippett on the end of their forward entries.
Why they can’t…
Sydney has lost to four sides out of the top eight this season, as well as a shock loss to Richmond.
Sydney have a formidable side, but they need to bring their best if they are to turn their luck around
against the top sides. There is no doubt that they are good enough to win the premiership, the battle
for Sydney is to bring their A game against the best teams in the league

Why they can win the flag? And Why they can’t?
Geelong
Why they can…
The Cats are in the perfect position to give the 2016 premiership a big shake. They
by
have a list filled with explosiveness, poise, experience and grunt. Their Midfield guns
Josh Teakle
Patrick Dangerfield and Joel Selwood, have provided the Cats with everything they could
have hoped for, and more in 2016. The added explosiveness of Dangerfield, the grunt of Selwood the
experience of the premiership players, and the spark of their youth gives Geelong the perfect recipe
to produce up another premiership cup.
Why they cant…
There are not too many arguments suggesting the Cats cannot lift the cup in 2016. Their only
weakness this season has been their forward line and trying to find the right partner for power-forward,
Tom Hawkins. They have tried almost every combination on the list to fill the void, with Shane
Kersten, Mitch Clark, and Nathan Vardy rolling through there. None have put their hand up and taken
the position under their wing. This could prove costly for the Cats who sometimes look a bit one
dimensional up forward.
Hawthorn
Why they can…
Well… its pretty self-explanatory! The Hawks have been the September Specialists for the last eight
years. Their dynasty began in 2008 against the Cats and since then they have won four of the last
eight premierships. They simply know how to win the big matches. While their list is aging, and this is
their biggest downfall – it has worked to their favour this season with their experience getting them
over the line in several matches. Winning five matches by under a goal is almost un-heard-of. While
they don’t go in premiership favourites, teams will be nervous running out along side this club in
September.
Why they can’t…
Two questions have been asked repeatedly this season about Hawthorn’s list. Are they too old, and
have they been worked out? At times their lack of speed and game style have been exploited during
the home and away season, the question is, can the Hawks be exploited at the pointy end of the
season. Eventually their old heads, Sam Mitchell, Luke Hodge, Josh Gibson, Jordan Lewis and
Shaun Burgoyne will no longer be able to support the team. If teams do their homework, this could
be the year to knock the Hawks off their Grand Final perch.

Why they can win the flag? And Why they can’t?
Greater Western Sydney
Why they can…
The Giants will play their first ever finals campaign the same way they have the rest of
by
the season, with flair and without fear. They are the new kids on the block when it comes
Josh Teakle
to finals, but they won’t be afraid of any opposition. The Giants have proven their worth
against the best this season. Defeating Hawthorn, Sydney, Geelong, Bulldogs and North Melbourne
and have the confidence to beat anyone who they line up against in the finals.
Why they can’t…
This is their first finals series after all, while they have beaten the best teams this season, finals is a
different ball game. They do have some experienced heads in Heath Shaw, Steve Johnson, Ryan
Griffen and Shane Mumford but the rest of the side are new to finals pressure. It will be interesting
whether the young pups can withhold the pressure cooker that is the finals.
Adelaide
Why they can…
Adelaide has proven to be one of the best sides in 2016. They have the best forward line depth in the
comp, and have so many avenues to goal. Second and third string forwards, Eddy Betts and Josh
Jenkins have been major contributors for the Crows. Adelaide’s midfield can expose any team on
their best day, led by Rory Sloane and Sam Jacobs. While they didn’t get the double chance, they will
be tough to beat this week at home against North Melbourne.
Why they can’t…
They have had their best season in six years, however when the pressure was turned up to finals
intensity they crumbled. The round 23-loss to West Coast proved costly when they squandered a top
four finish. They have to do it the hard way through the elimination final, after being so impressive all
season.
West Coast
Why they can…
West Coast are the in form team at the moment. They have won their last four matches, and while
their inability to win away was under the microscope early in the season that issue has been hit on
the head in the last few rounds following smashing wins against Hawthorn and the Crows. They are
genuine premiership threats.
Why they can’t…

important player on their list and his absence may expose their midfield. He is their
drive in the ruck and his work around the ground is better then any big man. He will
be a huge loss to West Coast’s premiership launch.
Western Bulldogs
Josh Teakle
Why they can…
The Bulldogs have the greatest belief in their ability and game plan. They play with heart, aggression
and resilience, through what has been a difficult season in the medical room. They have been able
to manage 15 wins from sheer belief in their game plan and personnel. Luke Beverage should give
himself a huge pat on the back for getting his team this far when most would have been happy with
the injuries excuse. The season is not over for the Dogs, they believe that they can beat any team on
their day, and they will worry a few teams in the finals.
by
Why they can’t…
Its simple… just too many injuries. Every team has to play through injuries, however none as
important as the losses that the Bulldogs have sustained. It would be a phenomenal effort to even
win a single final following long term injuries to captain Robert Murphy, Jack Redpath and Mitch
Wallis, as well as Marcus Adams, Tom Liberatore, Eastern Wood, Jack Mcrae and Dale Morris in
recent weeks. It’s just too much for the brave Dogs this season.
North Melbourne
Why they can…
North Melbourne have a lot to prove in the finals, following their perfect start to the season. The
Roos will also be playing for their retiring legends; Brent Harvey, Drew Petrie, Michael Firrito and
Nick Dal Santo.
Why they can’t…
The Roos hit their best form too early in the piece, they started the season like a bull out of a gate,
and this is not the same line up as the first nine rounds. They sustained injuries and form slumps
from vital players at the wrong time, and in the end were lucky to even qualify for finals.

AFL Bye Round: Five things we learned
CLICK ON THE FIASCO SPORTS.COM LOGO’S ABOVE TO TAKE YOU DIRECT TO THEIR BRILLIANT SPORTS MEDIA WEBSITE
With play put on a one-week halt before the 2016 AFL Finals, here are the five things we
learned during the bye round.
Women’s All-Star game a resounding success
by
With a peak audience of 1.04 million viewers, the Women’s All-Star game between
Marco Balsamo
Western Bulldogs and Melbourne Demons gave us a great taste of things to come in next year’s
inaugural AFL Women’s League.
Both teams displayed a great standard of fast-paced football, but it was the Bulldogs who prevailed
by 39 points.
Moana Hope showed why Collingwood selected her as their marquee player, booting six goals for the
Bulldogs.
Barry Hall still a force to be reckoned with
Big, bad Barry Hall showed that he can still dominate a game of football, kicking six goals in an epic
E.J. Whitten Legends Game to win the best on ground medal.
The 39-year-old terrorised defenders during his 15-year AFL career and struck the same fear into
All Stars backmen on Friday night.
With the game tied at 135 points each at the final
siren, Hall, Brendan Fevola and Jonathan Brown
kicked straight to win Victoria the annual match in a
shoot-out.
19-year-old half-back Callum Mills is the heavy
favourite to be named the NAB AFL Rising Star ahead
of Caleb Daniel, Darcy Parish, Jacob Weitering and
Jade Gresham.
In his first season with the Swans, the Sydney local
slotted straight into 2016’s most dominant side,
earning praise for his maturity and composure.
Mills averaged 19.4 disposals and 3.5 rebound 50’s
in his 20 games this year, making him the likely winner
of the prestigious award which will be handed out on
Tuesday.

Much to the Crows’ dismay, Rockliff is set to remain a Lion
Elite midfielder Tom Rockliff has been linked to the Adelaide Crows for months now, but
his manager Tom Petroro announced his client was set to remain at the Brisbane Lions.
Petroro said he was “99 percent sure” that the captain would stay with the Lions, despite
interest from the AFL’s top teams to snatch the star away from the struggling club.
by
Marco Balsamo
The Crows have been outstanding in 2016 following Patrick Dangerfield‘s departure and the potential
signing of Rockliff was exciting news for Crows fans, but it seems as though it is not meant to be.
Dump the bye round
In recent years, teams had been resting their star players in the latter rounds of the season, leading
to the AFL’s decision to bring in the bye round before finals.
The bye week may be welcome news to coaches ahead of do-or-die clashes, but it proved to be an
agonising weekend for AFL fans, who were left to wait desperately for next week’s action.
While Friday’s E.J. Whitten Legends Game and Saturday’s All-Star women’s match filled the gaping
hole slightly, a weekend without competitive football proved to be torturous.
