Known world-wide for her primitive style in
quilting, Lisa Bongean calls Menasha, WI
home. This is where it all happens for Primitive Gatherings and the customers that have
grown to love Lisa’s primitive and folk art de-
signs featuring her hand-dyed wools, homespun, reproduction and designer fabrics.
Lisa’s talents are many;; proud mother of 3 sons (Lance, Luke and Jake), designer,
teacher, award winning quilter, shop owner,
and business woman partnered with her husband, Nick. In addition to the retail shop, Lisa
and Nick stay busy with their wholesale and
internet business as well as traveling to and
vending at numerous quilt shows across the country. Primitive Gatherings,
their family-owned business, opened in 2004.
Primitive Gatherings was elected by the editors of American Patchwork &
Quilting Magazine as one of the outstanding quilt shops in North America and
featured in the 13th annual Quilt Sampler (spring/summer 2006 edition), a
special publication from the American Patchwork & Quilter Magazine.
Lisa recently entered into a partnership with Moda and embraces this wonderful opportunity to continue reaching out to quilters everywhere offering them
beautiful new fabrics designed especially for creating her primitive and folk art
designs.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER
Linda Ambrosini, [email protected], 949 362-4206
Isn’t the talent we have in Surfside Quilters Guild amazing? I am always blown away by the ladies who present our Member’s Showcase. This month I was in awe of the incredible detail of Kathy Awender’s work and the versatility of Julie Vlahos. I must
admit I loved Julie’s Kaffe quilts but I think my favorite was the “stinky sock” quilt. It just made me smile.
2015 is now upon us and time for making New Year’s resolutions. If yours is com-
pleting some quilting projects the UFO group is the place to be. We have new chair
people for this group. Marjie Butterworth and Cora Schmitt will be heading this
group as they start the year. Thank you to Linda Rigdon and Wendy McCalley for
chairing this group since its inception.
Members of South Bay Quilters Guild brought an opportunity quilt to our December meeting but had to leave
prior to break. If any of you purchased tickets and did not get them turned in before they left, please mail them
to: Stephania Bommarito at 18924 Patronelle Ave Torrance CA 90504-5817.
PRESIDENT’S QUILT Vickie Janis [email protected] 949-842-6089
The president’s quilt is Surfside Quilters Guild’s way of saying “THANK YOU, Linda” for the count-
less hours planning, organizing and helping our Guild to continue to grow. I am soliciting blocks for
Linda’s quilt;; we want YOUR block! I am planning on having a block from every member, whether you are new to quilting or have quilted for 50 years. Blocks are being collected at the meetings in
January, February and March. In April the designing, construction and quilting takes place. I can’t tell you how much I love my quilt, just knowing how much time and love went into creating it. If
possible, let’s make Linda’s quilt even more amazing.
Linda asked for a Hawaiian Christmas Quilt. I will have some ocean blue fabric 7” squares for you at the meeting. You are welcome to use your own fabrics. We are hoping for bright colors, royal
blues, lime green, and red. Think Hawaii, Santa with a lei, holly swim trunks, red & green whales,
lighted palm trees. January is a perfect time to catch Christmas fabric, trims or buttons on sale.
The construction committee will trim the blocks 5.5” square so please leave yours oversized. Be sure to
sign your block ½” away from the edge so it will be seen when the blocks are sewn together. I will have
pens to use for your autograph at the Guild meetings. Deadline is the March 10th meeting. Don’t be left out; every block will be treasured! Beginning
quilters to experienced, join the fun. Be sure to sign
up for the quilting bees and meet some new friends.
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call or email me.

WORKSHOPS Wendy McCalley [email protected]
Linda Rigdon [email protected]
On January 14th, Lisa Bongean of Primitive Gatherings presents her “Tulip Baskets” pattern, available in a kit from the teacher. This is a project in wool appliqué, and the kit includes all the wool and
homespun backing ($18.00, check made to Lisa Bongean). Lisa’s classes at Road to California have been filled for months, so don’t miss out on this workshop. Lisa has graciously agreed to take more students in
her class, so we still have a few openings.

treats added so much to the festive table.
Nancy Pestal

celebrate YOU. Please bring a treat to share
and sign up to win an appreciation gift. Treats
from any Guild member are very much
welcomed and appreciated.

MONTHLY MINI
Nancy Pestal, Emily LaMond,
And Linda Ambrosini
Margaret Arnold [email protected] 949-770-1259
Our January Monthly MIni wall quilt was designed and created by Mary Gorelick. She was inspired by the
parrots that fly around Pasadena and Santa Ana. In the morning you can hear them squawk from the wires.
She also loves the song birds in her yard. The birds in her mini quilt are fused collage/appliqué, with a back
stitch outline. Mary used Mood's Sweet Serenity line of fabric for
most of them because she liked the subtle touch of music. "Sing" is
sewn with couched leather cording. This whimsical little quilt is so
cheery, it will brighten up your winter days. Be sure to stop by the
Monthly Mini table to get your lucky tickets.
Winner of the December monthly mini was our
guest Carolyn Jamison (left). The wall hanging and apron were made by Betty Collins
(right). The catalog from “The Sky’s the Limit” Margaret Arnold

UFO GROUP
Linda Rigdon [email protected]
Wendy McCalley [email protected]
If your New Year’s Resolutions include “Get Organized”, or “Finish Something”, or “Have More Fun”, or “Make New Friends”, or “Hang Out” the UFO Group is perfect for you!
Mark your calendar. Date: Friday, January 23 (and every 4th Friday) Time: 10:00 - 11:30
Place: Maggie Bell’s Clubhouse, 33715 Surfside Drive, Dana Point.
Bring one thing you finished, plus a list of nine things you want to finish and start receiving
accolades and charms and drawing chances right away!
2014 Members, REMEMBER January General Meeting is the
final date to show your UFO’s to be eligible for our drawings.
We know that Road to California is on from the 21th through the
25th, but we will still have our end-of-the-year drawings at our
January UFO meeting. Last year’s postponement was too
confusing for everyone.

A sympathy card was sent to Katy Lillie and family as they mourn the
sudden passing of her younger brother (and only sibling) Matt
Higgins. May he rest in peace.
We care so much for our members and wish to acknowledge them in
good times and in times of need. Please let me know of any member who
could benefit from an uplifting card from the guild. Notification by email is
preferable but phone calls are welcome as well.
Katy Lillie showed this “Millennium Star” quilt made in Peggy Martin’s October workshop. Joan Orris made this “Enchanted Holiday” table runner from a Shabby Fabrics kit. The fused, laser cut appliqué is machine
satin stitched and the checkered area is stitch in the ditch technique. The quilt makes a cheerful addition to her kitchen table.

Susie Russell [email protected]
We begin the new year collecting PATRIOTIC PRINTS. These of course would have red, white
and blue in the fabric. Remember, the more people who participate, the more variety you receive
the next month.
A REMINDER OF HOW IT WORKS:
-Wash, iron and cut selvages from 1 yard of good quality 100% cotton before cutting 12 ten inch
blocks.
-Put the 12 ten inch blocks in a gallon plastic bag with your name written in large letters at the top.
Also indicate that you have included 12 blocks.
WE MUST RECEIVE 12 BLOCKS IN EACH PLASTIC BAG IN ORDER FOR THE SWAP TO
WORK. THE WAY THE SWAP WORKS, you most likely WILL NOT RECEIVE ANY OF YOUR
FABRIC BACK, SO IF YOU LIKE YOUR FABRIC BE SURE TO BUY A LITTLE EXTRA TO SAVE
FOR YOURSELF!
The months ahead will have these themes to collect:
JANUARY: PATRIOTIC
FEBRUARY: KAFFE FASSETT
MARCH: FLORALS
APRIL: BATIKS
MAY: BRIGHTS

.Happy New Year everyone! Our Show and Tell in December was
another fabulous showing. We were treated to 19 beautiful quilts,
many of them ready to be wrapped and shipped for Christmas.
Please bring in your seasonal or newly made projects to our January
meeting for all of us to enjoy.
You can print and complete a Show and Tell form from our web
page to bring in with your project, or fill one out at the meeting.
Jan Hirth made this baby quilt for her niece’s baby boy, Bryson, who is due in February. Jan
made baby blocks to represent his name: B is
for the Cal Berkley Bears, Dad’s alma mater;; R is for rhinoceros, their dog’s favorite toy;; Y is for yak which they like to do, S is for Stegosaurus,
their favorite dinosaur; O is for owl as they will be
very wise parents; N is for newt as there are no
other animals starting with N. Their pets, Twix
the cat and Luna their black lab are at the bottom
of the quilt. Aunt Jan is represented by the ant
crawling up the Yak block.
Vivien Hawker
Joan Orris
Charlotte Spere had never made a Sun Bonnet Sue
quilt and wanted to try it. She also wanted to practice
her hand embroidery skills doing the blanket stitch. The
easy pattern is from Quilt in a Day. Nancy Burch did a
wonderful job on the quilting. One of Charlotte’s grand-
daughters loved the quilt as she was making it, so she
will eventually receive the quilt.
12
“Tree’s Up—Lights on” was shown by Odette
Osantowski. Pattern from Sandy Gervais’ “Pieces From My Heart”. You use 10 different colors of red, green and white—cut and shuffle the pieces and
sew back together. Odette reduced the pattern by
50% so she could hang it in her entry way.
“Let It Snow” made by Annice Douglas for herself from
a pattern by Primitive Gatherings. The wool snowmen
are hand appliqued. Annice was visiting her son in Missoula, Montana and he said if she would drop him off at
the river for some fly fishing she could shop while he
fished. Deer Country Quilts at Sealy Lake is about 30
miles from Missoula. The shop is large and full. When
talking with the owner she asked about the shops in the
area where Annice lives. When Annice told her so
many had closed she suggested our guild put a caravan
together and drive to Montana! She said she would be
happy to have a couple classes for us. Annice told her
she would tell the guild. It is a 17 hour drive.
Barbara Ann Christensen showed
“Christmas Trees”. About five years ago, she saw this quilt in a shop and had
to make it. She loved using all kinds of
Christmas scraps. It is a Cozy Quilt pattern and Martha Hurlburt quilted a poinsettia design on it.
13
Priscilla Hackbarth brought her completed
“Millennium Star” quilt done in Peggy Martin’s work shop in October.
“Stars and Snowballs” was displayed by Joann Bishop.
Joann began this UFO in a class many years ago, using
Civil War prints. Determined to get it finished she found the
border and backing and sent it to Nancy Burch for her
beautiful quilting. It will go to family friends for Christmas.
Becky McDaniel showed her quilt and pillow which are machine appliqued and machine quilted. The apron is
hand appliqued and machine quilted by Becky. Hank’s quilt is for her grandson Henry;; he will be four months this Christmas. His sister Sydney will be three in February. Becky thought it would be fun to give her a pillow
with her name on it since her brother’s quilt has his name. These kids live in Georgia and Becky will be visiting them for Christmas. She also wanted to give Sydney an apron so that we can have fun cooking together. Can
you tell how excited she is to get to spend the holiday with them?

“Guess How Much I Love You” is the name of this quilt made by Katy Lillie. Her son Chris put the book on
Amanda’s baby registry. She bought the quilt kit at Road2CA before she knew they were having a girl. The
book was given at the shower and now the quilt is ready
in time for winter. Pattern: “It’s A Snap”. Nancy Burch did the quilting. It is Katy’s 5th finished UFO - only five
more to go.
“In Memory of Lenore” was constructed and longarm machine quilted by Elizabeth Geer. Several
years ago she took a class on the French Braid
Quilts from the books by Jane Miller. Elizabeth took
the class with her friend Lenore who has now
passed away. Elizabeth loves the gradations of
hues that play off the beautiful focus fabric colors.
This pattern was a great way to practice feathers on
her long-arm, and she was feeling pretty good about
how it turned out. Then a friend from her church
quilting group saw it on the machine and said, “Oh, wow, hearts!” Well, so much for her feathers. Katy Lillie saw this finished quilt on the wall at
Sew N’ Sew in Glendora. She says it is an awe-
some shop and the ladies are so friendly. They
gave her the pattern, no charge, and she bought
all she thought she would need. If she had not
been injured Katy would have had it finished by
the baby shower, but instead it is for Christmas.
Karen Wendel helped her figure out the scallops—how to attach them in the proper place.
Nancy Burch quilted it. It is Katy’s 4th finished UFO for this year.
Bette Bradley shows a Silk Ribbon Baltimore Album quilt
she made using silk ribbon embroidery in a class taught by
Kathy Awender.
