A Word from our President…
I
n this season of Thanksgiving, I have my sewing friendships near the top of my “be
thankful for” list. My sewing friends are as wonderful and as different as the quilts
and projects we complete together. But I hope they know that without them – in all
their stripes and opinions – I would be lost. These are the true friends I turn to when I
need a word of encouragement, some advice for a sticky topic, or for those aggravating personal issues that seem to solve themselves after you talk it over with a buddy. I
am so blessed to have you in my life, and many of you reading this know I am talking
about YOU!
Most of my friends know that something happens to me when the weather changes. I start wearing
sweatshirts and warmer jackets, and I find myself thinking about quilting projects. I seem to lose steam in
the summer, but with autumn, it comes roaring back. I find myself looking at quilting magazines with new
interest. Does this happen to you too?
And, speaking of magazines, I am noticing more and more modern quilts and patterns in the magazines I
subscribe to. ”Modern” -- whatever that means! What it means to me is that I am seeing simpler patterns, more solids, lots of close quilting, but not feather and flourishes. The LA Modern Quilt Guild is a
huge group, and I lurked a bit online, and they are a young group, compared to me, and they blog and
chat online and have “sew-ins” as opposed to lots of formal programs. I love it that there is more than
one way to enjoy this passion!
The other thing I noticed this month is that when I went shopping, I was blown away at the number of
items I saw that were completed with quilting patterns, either the pattern or the actual quilting. A woman
in front of me in line the other day was wearing a lovely gold and black jacket that was a rail fence pattern
done in satins, corduroy and jacquards. Are we spilling into other interests, or was this just something I
never noticed until now?
It’s hard to believe another year just sped by and we will be celebrating the holiday in the next few weeks.
I wish you and yours a peaceful healthy time! May your turkey be luscious! See you at our special meeting
on December 4 (the FIRST Wednesday) when we will be treated to some unique stories about quilts and
quilters of Gees Bend.

LAST MINUTE CHRISTMAS SHOPPING
T
he December guild meeting will be the last opportunity to buy
remaining Tea & Auction Boutique items. This is a wonderful
opportunity to do some last minute holiday shopping, and there may be
some great bargains at our last sale of the year.
Thank you to all of the boutique contributors!!! So many creative and
generous donations were made that the boutique has made almost
$1800 so far this year.
Anyone who wants their contributions back can reclaim them at the
December guild meeting. Any items remaining at the end of the meeting will be donated to a worthy cause as determined by the Board.

Becky Meekhof has stepped up to be our 2014 1st Vice President. Fantastic
when a new member wants to get involved in our guild. So proud of you,
Becky.
Micky Mellevold is the chair of Friends of the Library, and sells magazines
each month.
Peggy Fulmer and Roslie Liogys, work together to do the Door Prizes each
month.

T
hank you all for your support of this month's incentives. I had 3 incentives of
various quilt related items. The InvisiGrip was won by Novella Vandal, the Hope
Basket by Joan Zimmerman, and the Piping Hot Binding kit was won by Patti
Richmond.
So far I've collected 378 lids from our Guild. That's great! Some of you were kind
enough to drop them off at my house. I will still be collecting pink Yoplait lids thru
December. Please remember to bring them.

HRISTMAS TOYS: The 3/1 Marines will be at the December 4th meeting.
Please remember to bring unwrapped TOYS. The men & women are deployed,
but there will be a Christmas party for the families still here. They could also
use wrapping paper, ribbons, etc.
Also remember to bring in any finished projects so we can give away to those
in need.

QUILTS OF VALOR
S
oCal Quilts of Valor has had a busy month. We presented over 52 quilts through
the Cities of Lakewood, Cypress, El Dorado and the VA hospital. Many were WWII
vets, and one was a POW on the Pueblo.
Between the LB event and the NBC TV show, we now have another 17 quilt requests
to fill. There will be another interview with the CEO of QOV soon, so watch for it!
We have lots of quilt tops and backs ready to be quilted for these presentations, but
we need more long-arm volunteers. Thank you for your help!!

This is a chance to turn five UFOs into quilts in only one year!


Decide which of your UFOs need to be quilts by November 2014…pick 5.
Describe the finished quilts on the next page. Make sure that No. 1 is the one you want to work on
first. Give enough information to easily identify each quilt. For example, “green churn dash” is a better description than “Bill’s birthday quilt”. Fill out both copies of the list and keep one for yourself so
you know what to work on next!
Finished means quilted, bound and labeled.



The first quilt due in Jan. 2014, will be No. 1 on your list. It may be turned in early. After that, one
quilt will be due every two months except the 4th quilt will have 3 months because we have no meeting
in July. And the order of the quilts chosen for each time will be randomly selected from the remaining
numbers.
When you turn in your first UFO for inspection, you will be given a ribbon and a button to attach showing that quilt is finished. You will receive another button for each UFO as it is recorded as finished.
There will be drawings for prizes after each due date is reached; therefore, all who finish even just one
quilt will be eligible to win a prize that month. Other prizes will be awarded when the year is up.
