Commerce Lexington Inc. Recognized Among Top Chambers in U.S.
Commerce Lexington Inc. was recently recognized as one the top
chambers of commerce in the country during the American Chamber of
Commerce Executives’ (ACCE) Centennial Conference in Cincinnati,
Ohio. The organization competed in and was a finalist for the Chamber
of the Year Award in Category 4, which represents the largest chambers
of commerce in the U.S.
During an awards program on August 13, Commerce Lexington Inc.
President and CEO Bob Quick and Immediate Past Chair of the CLX
Board Danny Murphy accepted Commerce Lexington’s Chamber of the
Year Finalist Award. ACCE reported a record number of applications for
Category 4, which also included the Association of Washington
Business, Boise (Idaho) Chamber of Commerce, and the Toledo (Ohio)
Regional Chamber of Commerce.
“We are humbled by this recognition from the American Chamber of
Commerce Executives organization, especially since this year marks the
100th annual convention for ACCE,” said Bob Quick. “While being
named one of the top chambers and a finalist for the overall Chamber
of the Year award reflects a great deal on our staff and what we do dayin and day-out as an organization, it is due in large part to our outstanding members, board of directors, and volunteers. We recognize that it
takes so many people throughout our region working hard to make the
Bluegrass Region successful, and this honor is shared by them as well.”
ACCE’s Chamber of the Year is the nation’s only award recognizing
the dual role chambers have in leading businesses and communities.

Manufacturers’ Networking Group
Hears About Area Workforce Resources
Over 25 Lexington-based manufacturers attended the Manufacturers’
Networking Group luncheon (pictured below) on July 28th, which was
hosted by Webasto Roof Systems. Attendees learned more about the
workforce resources available to them in Lexington and from the state,
and then took a tour of Webasto’s facility. Billie Peavler, the Executive
Director of the Business and Education Network (BEN), gave an overview
of the services provided by BEN and the organization’s goals. Josh
Benton, the Executive Director of Workforce Development at the Kentucky
Cabinet for Economic Development, presented on the Kentucky Skills
Network, which is a one-stop shop for workforce resources and training
grants available to Kentucky businesses.
EDITOR’S NOTE:
As a part of Commerce Lexington’s economic development efforts,
we visit 150 companies each year to gauge our local business environment, to be a helpful resource and to guide them through incentive programs as they grow in Lexington. As we meet with companies, our team wants to make you aware of some of these great
businesses in Lexington that you may not know.
KentuckyUnited Makes Visit to Detroit
In late August, Commerce Lexington Inc. staff traveled as a part of
KentuckyUnited on a marketing trip to Detroit. KentuckyUnited is a public-private partnership of state, regional and local economic development
organizations formed to market Kentucky. Our team travels with
KentuckyUnited annually to meet with site selection consultants,
prospective companies, and companies who have a presence in
Kentucky. This trip also included an appreciation luncheon with Michigan
businesses that have Kentucky operations. Several companies with
Lexington locations were able to attend.
A&W Restaurants Opens New
Location in Hamburg Area
A&W Restaurants, Inc., a classic brand known worldwide for
their draft Root Beer and Root Beer Floats, is headquartered
in Lexington at Coldstream Park. Commerce Lexington Inc.,
along with state and local officials, recruited them to locate in
Lexington in December 2011 bringing 30 jobs and investing
more than $1.9 million to our community. In early August,
A&W held a ribbon cutting for its new restaurant located off
War Admiral Way in Hamburg. In conjunction with the grand
opening, A&W gave 50-percent of its proceeds to local nonprofits. We are proud to have A&W’s headquarters in
Lexington and are excited about its growth. Learn more about

STAT OF THE MONTH
WalletHub.com: Lexington Had the 12th-Best Post-Recession Recovery
Since 2008, 13 municipalities have filed for bankruptcy. With
Detroit’s bankruptcy trial approaching, and many other cities still struggling to recover from the Great Recession, the personal finance social
media network, WalletHub.com, listed Lexington-Fayette County with
the 12th-Best Post-Recession Recovery among the 150 largest U.S.
Cities since the recession. Using 18 key metrics — from the inflow of
college-educated workers and number of new businesses to unemployment rates and home price appreciation — WalletHub.com examined
how each city has evolved economically in the past several years.
This particular ranking includes city populations only, and does not
include the metro areas. Six of the top ten best recovery cities on the list
are located in Texas, while recent Commerce Lexington Leadership Visit
sites on the list included Pittsburgh (#21), Madison (#33), San Antonio
(#49), Omaha (#52), and Charlotte (#98). To view the complete list
and key metrics considered, visit http://wallethub.com/edu/most-leastrecession-recovered-cities/5219/.
WalletHub.com also reported that Lexington-Fayette scored well in
the categories of Ratio of Part-Time to Full-Time Jobs Decrease (#17)
and Violent Crime Rate Decrease (#20).

excited to lead this campaign. We have such
exceptional community leaders who volunteer
their time and effort to this initiative, and quite
a few of them have been with us for several
campaigns. The fact that so many volunteers

Leadership Lexington Begins 2014-15 Program with Orientation Retreat
Article by Cindy Brandenburg,
Commerce Lexington Inc.
It was a great start to the 2014-15 Leadership
Lexington program presented by KentuckyOne
Health, when class members met each other for
the first time at a “Get Acquainted Reception”
hosted by Keeneland on August 11th at the
beautiful Keene Place. This year’s class is not
only dynamic, but is also the largest in
Leadership Lexington history, with 50 participants.
On August 14th and 15th, the class had a twoday Orientation Retreat at the Lake Cumberland
4-H Education Center in Jabez. Class participants carpooled for the two-hour trip to Jabez
and they were quite surprised by the remote yet
serene setting they found upon arrival. The first
day started with a welcome from the Leadership
Lexington Steering Committee, followed by Dr.
Virgil Grant, who led the class through a few icebreakers and trust-building activities. One of
which included a mouse trap. Each team challenge was to develop strong bonds within the
class.
The afternoon began with class members
pitching community project ideas to each other
and working through the process of selecting
one of four community projects to participate in
during the program year. The projects are
focused on a variety of issues concerning the
Lexington community, including a program dedicated to providing middle schoolers with the
opportunity to job shadow, feeding families in
need, one geared toward identifying people in
Lexington who could benefit from job skills
training and connecting them with the appropri-
ate resources, and last but not least, a project
targeting struggling home owners to assist them
in bringing their properties up to code compliance.
In the evening, class members continued
their relationship-building during dinner, informal games and a bonfire.
On day two, Ryan Lisk of Lisk Associates
reviewed the DISC personality and motivators
assessment and then led the class through an
interpretation of their individual assessment
results. The class members then selected the
project they would commit to work on for the
next year. Ryan had each project group map their
DISC results on a DISC wheel to analyze what
each member will bring to the group. Ryan also
challenged them to think about areas of
strengths and weaknesses that could lead to
road blocks or create harmony for the group during project implementation.
Susan Rayer, Director of Career Services at
Transylvania University and Projects Co-Chair for
the Leadership Lexington Alumni Association,
shared with the project groups how they can utilize the Alumni Association for Project Liaisons
throughout the year. Afterwards, the project
groups met to complete their project charter and
chart the course for their project this year. The
day ended with a few take-aways from class
members and what they are looking forward to
for the year to come!
