Pirates as Anarchists
The Devil's Anarchy
The Other Loose Roving Way of Life & Very Remarkable Travels of Jan Erasmus
Reyning, Buccaneer
By Stephen Snelders
“Snelders has made a major contribution to piratology by introducing certain rare Dutch sources full of anecdote
and illumination. But he's contributed even more to the field of radical piratology: pirate as libertarian hero,
pirate as symbolic focus for anti-Capital's desire. Rimbaud might've dreamed something like this when he was
twelve. But here it is at last, a book of true stories.”—Peter Lamborn Wilson
Examining piracy as limited social rebellion,The
Devil's Anarchy travels from the Hollywood pirate-ashero to the stories of two great Dutch pirates: Claes
Compaen, who terrorized the seas from 1623 to 1627,
and Jan Erasmus Reyning, who ruled the seas a halfcentury later.
P
irate culture as radical social organization: a
salty picture of anarchic pirate life, liberated,
pleasurable and violent.
Rebelling against hierarchical society and choosing the
Jolly Roger, pirates entered the political spheres of
anarchist organization and festival, with death and
violence ever-present. Pirates created an upside-down
world full of heroics, as well as the deep horrors of life
outside authority.
Stephen Snelders is a historian with a research focus
on social transformation and resistance in the body as
well as the mind. He is the past editor of The Pan
Forum (a leading research journal of psychotropic
studies) and lives in Amsterdam.

Was Nietzsche

I Am Not A Man, I Am Dynamite!
Friedrich Nietzsche and the Anarchist Tradition
Edited by John Moore and Spencer Sunshine
✯ Emma Goldman

✯ an introductory essay from Jonathan Purkis,
editor of Twenty-First Century Anarchism
E
leven essays analyzing the anarchism implicit in
Nietzsche's work and the Nietzschean impulse
in historical and contemporary anarchism.
Friedrich Nietzsche never considered himself an anarchist; he was an iconoclast, a destroyer of idols and
philosophies. For him, 'Anarchist' was a term of contempt, associated with socialism and Christianity and
their slave morality. However, many modern anarchist
thinkers find Nietzsche inspiring, and this disjuncture
is the momentum for I Am Not A Man, I Am Dynamite!
John Moore was an anarchist theorist and writer, and
critic of the dehumanizing effects of technology and
industry. He was part of the Anarchist Research Group
in London, founder of the Primitivist Network, and
lectured at the University of Luton. His books include
The Primitivist Primer and Anarchy and Ecstasy. He
died of a heart attack while chasing a bus in 2002.
The essays collected here, like Nietzsche's work, span
many, sometimes contradictory, directions, from basic
Nietzschean thought to advanced analysis of
Nietzsche's writings on politics and aesthetics. The
book includes writers in the new field of post-anarchism as well as

iveting portrait of a city on the brink of civil

Takes readers to the heart of the political and religious
struggles surrounding the hand-over of power in mid2004. Vividly describing people and places, the author

the realities of liberation and the limits of U.S. power.

When the Coalition of the Willing liberated Iraq in
early 2003, George W. Bush announced that the

just the opposite. Martinkus has the courage to say
what the mainstream press cannot. He spent eight
weeks in and around Baghdad in early 2004, and
shows that, amidst a developing guerrilla war and a
chaotic reconstruction, the line between liberation and
occupation has become stretched.

The Art and Subversion of Ron English
By Ron English
Ron English has designed murals for the Guggenheim
Children's Fund and created an anti-drug campaign
for the United Nations' International Drug Control
Program in Kazakhstan. His art has been featured in
such feature films as Breakfast of Champions and
Basketcase II. This year, his art will be featured on the
cover of the new release by The Dandy Warhols.
A
career retrospective of Ron English, the country's most notorious POPagandist, billboard
bandit, post-punk prankster and countercultural artist.
A seminal figure in the subvertising, or culture jamming movement, in which artists and activists subvert
an existing advertisement to send out their own message or encourage free thought, English has pirated
over a thousand billboards over the last twenty years,
replacing existing advertisements with his own handpainted subvertisements.

Whether her roommate is unholy or just unhinged,
Kate's not sure. But she knows a good show when she

for a metal band. The kids love it. They take the show

with a demoness is fun, but Kate can't ignore the
creepy people from Lilith’s past who come to their

Kate starts to wonder if she’s gotten in a little too
deep. It's not quite rock and roll, but she could still

Carmen Dog
By Carol Emshwiller
“This trenchant feminist fantasy-satire mixes elements of Animal Farm, Rhinoceros and The Handmaid's Tale....
Imagination and absurdist humor mark [Carmen Dog] throughout, and Emshwiller is engaging even when most
savage about male-female relationships.”—Booklist
“A wise and funny book.”—The New York Times
"A novel about women turning into animals and animals turning into women, perhaps the funniest and the cruellest of her books, a sort of feminist Candide. The kindness of the innocent heroine, Pooch, triumphs over cruelty
in the end, which is happy; at least it is if you want it to be. Even Pooch's children turn out well, ‘setters, and all
male.’ Why this book isn't a feminist classic I don't know. Maybe it is. Maybe that's why people haven't heard
about it. It should be a required text on Gender in all high schools and colleges."—Ursula K. Le Guin

“I planned to read this grand book one chapter at a time. I’d scarcely begun the second when I fell under the

Great American
Road-Trip in Reverse
Negativeland
A Novel
By Doug Nufer
“An elegantly constructed novel that peers into the void—masked by plenty of razzle-dazzle—at the heart of contemporary American life. The prose crackles, and the dialogue is spare and sharp. This is a fine book on a society
in virtually invisible decline.”—Gilbert Sorrentino, Gold Fools
“Doug Nufer is the pop-punk heir to the great Oulipo tradition of constraint writing. His work is, therefore, brainy, babbly,
wry, and more fun than a crossword puzzle at a linguists' convention.”—Rebecca Brown, Gifts of the Body
Doug Nufer is a novelist, poet and playwright. He is
an editor of American Book Review and a former editor
of the Washington Free Press. His reviews and articles
have appeared in The Stranger, Rain Taxi, Sports
Illustrated and The Nation. He runs a wine shop in
Seattle.
I
n this rueful tale, Olympic gold medal winner Ken
Honochick and his girlfriend take a cross-country
road trip to revisit his brief moment of triumph and
his subsequent purgatory on the promotions circuit.
The result is a smart, flirtatious tour-de-force that’s
funny and inventive, written simply, with a single pervasive formal constraint. Under the comic gusto and
technical virtuosity, however, there is also penetrating
thought on our country's obsession with private
foibles and public image, individual achievement and
the pressure to cash in on it.

Fade to Oblivion
Spermatogonia
The Isle of Man
By Bart Plantenga
Photographs by Dave Lombard
Features unique page design of images and pulled
text.
P
sychological snapshot of the unravelling of a
carefully-managed identity.
In this dense psychological novel, the narrator
decides, both physically and metaphysically, to disappear. At the turning point in his life, Kees Caliphoria
is a laughtrack technician and psychogeographer: he
scouts the physical spaces and social situations that
produce specific kinds of laughter, which his company
then markets to the entertainment industry. His dissatisfaction is not ameliorated by fat paychecks and
expense accounts, and his dubious memories of an
earlier life as an art-porn star further undermine any
connection with an authentic life. Turning inward, he
critically examines and casts off layer after layer of
character signifiers, reaching a point of absolute interiority, a personal space between terror and spiritual
calm. Ultimately discarding subjectivity itself, he finally enters a world where identity only exists as remnants of other peoples' memory.
Bart Plantenga is an Amsterdam radiomaker, sound
journalist, and writer: Wiggling Wishbone: Stories of
Pata-sexual Speculation (Autonomedia, 1995) and Beer
Mystic. His recent book is Yodel-Ay-Ee-Oooo: The Secret
History of Yodeling Around the World.
Dave Lombard is a New York photographer who, for
over 25 years, has been quietly portraying life in NY
and elsewhere, achieving a zen-like combination of
strangeness and familiarity in his images.

richly detailed history of the early Upper
Mississippi as the major highway into
America's midwest frontier.
Birchbark canoes, romantic passenger steamboats, log
rafts, and grain barges all traveled Mark Twain's river,
but the commercial life of the Mississippi ended with
the coming of the railroad. Dams and locks then constricted the river, bringing floods, refuse and sewage.
Ignored and abused, the river was disregarded by communities for over a century.

death wish to a hardcore clinical psychologist's vision
of a better world. In between, there is censorship, children's rights, art, photography, and a lot of drunken,

women artists.
T
he remarkable achievement and undaunted
spirit of Shania Twain, the best-selling country
woman artist in history, despite controversy
over her First Peoples’ roots and suggestive, midriffbaring videos.
Jim Brown, a veteran country music critic, interviewed scores of women artists, including Shania
Twain, her band, managers, and her roadies in compiling this book.
Raised poor in a First Peoples’ family in a northern
Canadian mining town, she supported her siblings
after her parents' deaths by singing in a cabaret, where
she was discovered by Mercury Records. Her career
languished until she met fabled producer Mutt Lange,
who encouraged her to record her own songs and proposed marriage.

Dharma, Color, and Culture
New Voices in Western Buddhism
Edited by Hilda Gutierrez-Baldoquin
“I felt Buddha's spirit long before I began to study his words. I felt him not as a God or as the son of a God but as
a human being who looked around and said to himself: Something here is very wrong. People are such beautiful
and wondrous creations, why are they being tortured? How can there be an end to their suffering?”—Alice
Walker, in Dharma, Color, and Culture
Hilda Gutierrez-Baldoquin is a Soto Zen priest;

Alice Walker, Maxine Hong Kingston, Thich Nhat

levels: the personal, the interpersonal, the institutional
and the cultural. Thought-provoking, original, and

Freedom Wherever We Go
A Buddhist Monastic Code for the Twenty-first Century
By Thich Nhat Hanh
“Each training assures an area of freedom in our daily life and is based in mindfulness. Mindfulness enables us to
see clearly which actions of our body, speech, and mind help us to progress on the path of freedom and which
actions pull us away.”—Thich Nhat Hanh
Thich Nhat Hanh is a Vietnamese Buddhist monk,
poet, scholar, and human rights activist; he has been a
professor at Columbia and the Sorbonne and founder
of Van Hanh Buddhist University in Saigon. In 1967,
he was nominated by Martin Luther King, Jr., for the
Nobel Peace Prize. He is author of more than one hundred books, fifty in English. He lives at Plum Village, a
meditation center in France, and travels worldwide,
leading retreats on the art of mindful living.
C
enturies-old Buddhist monastic guidelines of
conduct, updated for the twenty-first century
—now available for the first time.
Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh has modernized the
guidelines that order the daily lives of Buddhist monks
and nuns. These rituals are a path to transformation
and liberation and nourish the practice of all practitioners by allowing insight into the monastic code of
conduct and lifestyle. Just as the original precepts were
developed from actual situations the Buddha encountered with his disciples, the guidelines here emerge
directly from real occurrences in modern monastic
communities. Everyone can learn from the integrity,
simplicity, beauty, and freedom of monastic life.

Peace Begins Here
Palestinians and Israelis listening to each other

Foreword by Ishmael Reed

S
econd Edition of these ardent exhortations for
peace and justice. An excerpt:
“All people have the right to live in peace! What
is needed now is for each individual to become
stronger, to check and triumph over authority. To
do this is our right. We struggle and raise our
voices loud in order that we may live lives of
wonder and joy. Never believe that the greatest,
most irresistible force is the power of the state.
For the energy of the soul, the might of the
human spirit, is an even greater force, the most
magnificent power of all. Let us form in our
hearts the resolute will to realize peace, summoning a force sublime and unsurpassed.”

God in a
Beggar's Disguise
Only God
A Biography of Yogi Ramsuratkumar
By Regina Sara Ryan
Regina Sara Ryan, a professional writer and editor, is
a graduate advisor in Theology and Psychology at
Prescott College in Arizona. Her seven books have
been widely anthologized, including Sacred Voices:
Essential Women's Wisdom Through the Ages. Ryan's
work evolves from her thirty-year study of contemplation and mysticism; in 1995 she met the Yogi and
spent five weeks at his ashram. She lives in Prescott.
I
n every spiritual tradition, there is the story of an
ardent seeker who, while waiting for God, closes
his door to the poor beggar who visits unexpectedly. Later, believing that the Lord has failed to appear,
the seeker complains: “Where were you?” God
responds, “I came to you, but you turned me away.”
This is the true life story of that symbolic beggar, a
hidden saint, a well-educated holy man who begged
on the streets of India, Yogi Ramsuratkumar (1918 2001). “Only God” was his creed, and his approach to
everyday life. His unusual innocence and radiant presence were recognized by seekers from East and West,
who knew him as the Godchild of Tiruvannamalai,
the small city where he lived for forty years.
The book also includes the lives and teachings of the
holy beggar's three distinguished gurus, including Sri
Auribindo. With self-revelatory honesty and an enjoyable mix of storytelling, interviews, and fact-finding,
this eminently readable biography is an affecting
account of an extraordinary life.

The metaphoric tale each embodies is not unique,
however, but found in many cultures long before the

exist not because these godmen were actual historical
personages, but because they personify ancient, scandalous global mysteries.
This in-depth analysis is based upon original research

the worship of the sun, moon, stars and planets.
Acharya S. is a classically-educated archaeologist, historian, mythologist and linguist, considered an expert

Credit Scores, Credit Cards
How Consumer Credit Works: How to Avoid Mistakes and How to Manage It Well
By The Silver Lake Editors

strong—and safe!
In 2001, the average North American consumer spent
nearly $40,000 on credit cards. By 2005, this average
person will carry over $50,000 in consumer debt—not
counting mortgages or car loans! This unsecured consumer debt is fundamentally changing the way
Americans live:
✯ the tradition of a home owned free and clear
has become unusual as people borrow against
their homes—and refinance repeatedly—to
pay for discretionary spending
✯ financing vacations, electronics and dining out
with multiple credit cards is commonplace
At the same time, credit scores have become the golden keys to successful borrowing. But what does it all
mean? How do you know you’re managing your credit
wisely? In a credit-based economy, your credit score
means as much to you as money in the bank meant to
your grandparents—and here's how to protect it!

than a decade.

The New Nude Aesthetic

“Everyone needs inspiration, and I often turn to this wonderful collection to feel refreshed and invigorated. The

A
compilation of color nude photos from 20
erotic photographers, introducing a new style
of nude art: Simple Nudes, focusing exclusively on a model's beauty.
The Simple Nudes philosophy is to simply celebrate
the model's beauty, and not subsume the model to any
other purpose, not sex, not art, not commercialism.
Like the Dogma film movement from Europe, Simple
Nudes are characterized by
✯ the model’s inherent beauty in the natural state
✯ no forced poses
✯ no unnatural styling or props
This new, independent form of expression, also
named DOMAI style, from the web site which invented and champions it, is not a compromise between
art nudes and sex nudes, but is a true third art of
nude appreciation.
