friends and family. Yet the key to understanding and appreciating wine is education. As with any art form, the more
one knows about the subject, the more one will be able to appreciate it. I heartily recommend this book to anyone

More Joy of Birding
The Human Side of Birdwatching
Edited by Chuck Bernstein
Foreword by Kenn Kaufman
“I smile…and remember the wondrous day sixteen years ago when that single bird left its familiar surroundings
and others of its kind to stand in the bright sun of my little suburb. When it entered my field of vision the spark
fired within me and I began looking for all the wild things that were close at hand. I look for them still; I look in
earnest. And I discover the unknown every day right in my own backyard; it has been waiting here for me all
along.”—Brian Schiefer, from his contribution, In the Shadow of the Ghost

“This isn't Acapulco or Cabo, where they smile, take your money, and put you on your flight back home. Dia de los
Muertos dances in the Real Mexico, a world without a lifeguard, where people starve and live in fear every day of

street, holding out their hands.”—Kent Anderson

There are plenty of programs for the erring child, but
little support exists for the long suffering parents. This
is the first survival/recovery book solely for parents
enduring the verbal, emotional, financial—and often—
physical abuse of their children. Its message is to:
✯ re-evaluate attitudes toward parenting
✯ recognize that the addiction, not the child, is
the enemy
✯ attend to personal needs first
✯ take healthy steps towards emancipation
✯ disallow physical, verbal, and financial abuse
✯ set boundaries and stick with them
✯ cease worrying about what relative, friends, and
neighbors say, think, or do
Drawing on interviews with other parents, combined
with his own experience, Charles Rubin lets parents
know they are not alone and offers advice on how to
become strong for themselves—and their children.
Charles Rubin is president of a self-help foundation,
and author of fiction and non-fiction. He has
personally experienced the process of surviving his
children's substance problems. He lives in Sonoma
County.

girl bullies
My Secret Bully
By Trudy Ludwig
Illustrated by Abigail Marble
Foreword by Susan Wellman, founder and president of the Ophelia Project
“Too few resources are available to families dealing with girl bullying. My Secret Bully will show girls they are not
alone. It expands our understanding of a ‘bully’—from the boy in the schoolyard who steals lunch money—to a person who might be a best friend. This is an important resource for parents.”—Rachel Simmons, Odd Girl Out
A
touching, inspirational story targeted for 5-11year olds that instantly draws young readers
into Monica’s world, where she is bullied by a
friend and learns how to cope, survive and thrive.
Name-calling, humiliation, exclusion and manipulation
are some bullying tactics Monica's friend Katie
employs. Monica learns to face her fears of betrayal
and social isolation, and reclaims her power from the
bully with the help of a supportive adult—her mother.
Helpful tips, discussion questions and additional
resources are listed in the back of the book, which is a
wonderful vehicle for parents, teachers and counselors.
Abigail Marble is an illustrator and graphic designer.
She lives in Portland, Oregon.

Relational aggression is an act of emotional bullying
hidden among tightly knit networks of friends.
Instead of using knives and fists to bully others,
emotional bullies employ relationships, words and
gestures as their weapons of attack. Emotional
bullying is often dismissed as a normal rite of passage
but it is as harmful as physical aggression, and with
the same devastating long-term effects.
Trudy Ludwig, an award-winning writer, first became
aware of relational aggression when her own daughter
became a target. She writes for clients ranging from ad
agencies to universities and lives in Portland, Oregon,
with her family.

Not simply a literal, this new translation attempts to

the original Coptic but in English, with equivalent
cultural terms and ideas. It is, therefore, fresher, more
poignant, more direct, and more understandable,
without being a paraphrase. In addition, the text

Finding our True Home
Living the Pure Land Here and Now
By Thich Nhat Hanh
“As human beings, our deepest desire is to find an environment which is secure and where there is love and
understanding. All of us want to live in such an environment. If you live in surroundings where you feel there is
security, understanding, and love and where people have the capacity to transform their suffering, fear, and
attachment, then you live in the Pure Land.”—Thich Nhat Hanh

new, definitive translation of the Amitabha
Sutra. In his commentary, Thich Nhat Hanh
unlocks some of the deepest concepts of
Buddhism.
He examines the Amitabha Sutra, a core text of the
Pure Land school of Buddhism, one of the most
practiced forms of Buddhism in the world. He reveals
how meditation is capable of transforming suffering
and brining true happiness....
Introduced in the Buddha's own lifetime, Pure Land
practice puts us in touch with the beauty in our own
world and bring us the security, solidity, and freedom we
need in order to truly enjoy it. Happiness cannot exist
without suffering. Realizing that Buddha is within us, we
see that the Pure Land (paradise) is here and now, rather
than in the future. Finding Our True Home will open a
new Dharma door to many students of meditation.

poet, scholar, and human rights activist. He taught at

The Hermit and the Well
By Thich Nhat Hanh

“You, too, may have met your hermit, or perhaps something else equally marvelous. Maybe it was a rock, a tree, a
star, or a beautiful sunset. The hermit is the Buddha inside of you.”—Thich Nhat Hanh
B
As a young boy, during the suffering and destruction
that war brought to Vietnam, Thich Nhat Hanh had a
profound transformative experience after seeing a
reproduction of a Buddha statue on the cover of a
magazine. Moved by the Buddha's serene expression
and peaceful appearance, he decided to become a
monk.
Through his ensuing school years, his interest and
commitment deepened, leading to visits to temples
and other places of worship, including a class field
trip to visit a hermit living in the mountains. Thich
Nhat Hanh ultimately entered a Buddhist monastery
at age 14.

These teachings by Thich Nhat Hanh, during the 2002
Hand of the Buddha retreat in Plum Village, highlight
elements of the sutra as keys to global compassion,
love, and understanding. He devotes particular insight
to the possibility of everyone becoming a Buddha as
the basis for bodhisattva action—unselfish devotion to
all beings—connecting the sutra directly to the
current needs of our world.
He proposes radical new ways to find peaceful solutions
to conflicts, and challenges the U.N to work for peace.
With lucidity and clarity, he also encourages governments
to act as Sanghas, or spiritual communities sharing
collective insights, demonstrating the direct
applicability of Buddhist teachings to today's issues.

Naked Happy Girls
New York Undressed Sexy Private Innocent Natural Sunny Erotic Real & Playful
Photographs by Andrew Einhorn
Introduction by Emma Jane Taylor
“Twisting and turning, lounging and laughing; I've never seen so many of New York's girls, so happy to be naked
at home. Andrew has a special way of bringing out the real, hidden, sexy side of every New York girl-next-door.
This book made me feel good.”—Emma Jane Taylor, The Em & Lo Down, Nerve.com
He actually likes the women he shoots, and you can
tell they can tell. They feel at home, both literally—
almost all the shoots took place in their own
apartments—and figuratively. They seem to say, “This
is how I'd move, how I'd smile, how I'd lean back on
my bed, even if I weren't unclad in the presence of a
near-stranger and his camera.”
Andrew Einhorn fell in love with photography at
Temple University, where he worked on the school
newspaper and yearbook. After five years as a
photojournalist with the Philadelphia Inquirer, he
worked in fashion, travel, and children’s photography.
In 1994, he moved to New York, and began shooting
nude portraits of friends and strangers which were
incorporated into a television show that he produced
for seven years. Still in Manhattan, he works as a
photographer, videographer, editor, and comedian.

Memoirs of a Byzantine Eunuch
By Christopher Harris

he third part in a Byzantine trilogy, featuring an
interesting but little-known period of history. A
young boy is captured by Barbarians, castrated,
raised with girls and bought by a noted scholar
because of his feigned knowledge of a barbarian

Zeno, the castrati, develops a natural intelligence, but
is drawn into a labyrinth of sex, heresy, murder and
plotting. An army general, a bisexual boy emperor, a
peasant usurper and a half-Viking empress all compete
for authority, but real power lies amongst the decadent
eunuchs of the palace. Young Zeno plays more and
more dangerous games until he is forced to betray
those he loves.

Phantom of the

The Mystery of the Yellow Room
By Gaston Leroux
“A masterpiece.”—Maxim Jakubowski in Time Out
“I'd offer a reward of £500 if you can guess the solution to this crime.”—Desmond Christy in The Guardian
F
irst published by Dedalus in 1997, this lockedroom detective novel from 1908 is a classic of
early 20th-century detective fiction. At the heart
of the novel is the enigma: how could a murder take
place in a locked room which shows no sign of being
entered?
The novel is also about the rivalry between detective
Frederick Larson and a young investigative journalist,
Rouletabille. Larson finds a suspect who is put on
trial, only to have him cleared by Rouletabille, who
dramatically reveals the identity of the real murderer.
The Mystery of the Yellow Room is a novel which
consciously tries to outdo the traditional detective
novel with classic intellectual conundrums.
Gaston Leroux was born in 1868 in Normandy. After
practicing law, he became a journalist and foreign
correspondent. His crime novels made him famous in
his lifetime, although since his death, he is best
known for The Phantom of the Opera (1910). He died
in 1927.
SCB DISTRIBUTORS
“ ... a strictly fair-play, by-the-book murder conundrum, brilliant, logical and down-to-earth. It is what Leroux
does with this honourable, limited format that makes it so rich and strange. Taking advantage of the mechanical
artificiality and unreality of this fictive world where violent death evinces no stronger emotion than curiosity and
makes hardly a ripple in the pool of everyday life, he makes the realistic narrative background as bizarre as the
plot it frames. This is what we're not used to, and what, 90 years later, makes this as compelling and crazy a
nightmare as the Surrealists ever dreamed.”—Kenneth Wright in The Herald

Eight Stories
by the Bard of Prague
Others' Paradise
By Paul Leppin
Translated by Stephanie Howard and Amy Nestor
“Leppin was the truly chosen bard of the painfully disappearing old Prague...”—Max Brod
“Prague remains my deepest experience. Its conflict, its mystery, its rat-catcher's beauty have ever provided my
poetic efforts with new inspiration and meaning.”—Paul Leppin

evised translation of the limited-edition
hardcover of eight Leppin short stories, and
one of a series of Leppin titles from Twisted

Beginning with the highly imagistic The Doors of Life,
the stories detail the contours of the lives and visions
of Prague inhabitants, from
✯ a prostitute in the old Jewish Quarter
✯ a man caught in the memory of lost love
✯ a shoemaker whose world is the view from his
cellar workroom
These characters share an intense desire for lasting
human contact and the fated disappointment of all
such aspirations. Binding their personal histories is
Prague itself, the city whose nature, mythical and yet
all-too-real, gives shape and force to their desires,
while simultaneously determining their frustrations.
Paul Leppin was born in Prague. He was a civil
servant when The Doors of Life came out in 1902.
Described as the German-Bohemian Baudelaire, he
was horrified of bourgeois existence, and satisfied
when scandal followed the publication of his novel
Daniel Jesus (1905). While many of the writers Leppin
respected, Rilke and Meyrink, left Prague, Leppin
could not live elsewhere. His contribution to the city’s
literature and culture was recognized both in 1934,
when he was awarded the Schiller Memorial Prize,
and in 1938, when he received the Czechoslovak
Ministry of Culture Award for Writers. He died in
1945.

ractical advice on creating a personal betrothal
ceremony based on ancient ways. Ever
wondered where the words 'Honeymoon' and
'Tying the Knot' derive from? These words are
associated with the pre-Christian marriage rite of
Handfasting.
Handfasting A Practical Guide takes you on an
historical journey, describing customs and traditions
associated with betrothal, from times and places when
our forebears were in tune with the changing seasons
and natural rhythms of their world.
Going beyond church or civil ceremonies, Handfasting
offers deeper meaning and union to couples joining in
marriage. This is a very modern way to commit to
another person based on the lore and customs of our
ancestors.
Mary Neasham lives in a remote part of the Suffolk
countryside, where she has spent many years studying
the magical arts. She is co-author of the Teenage
