Further, it is the policy of this District to provide an equal opportunity for all students, regardless of race, color, creed, age, disability, religion, gender, ancestry, national origin, place of residence within the boundaries of the District, or social or economic background, to learn through the curriculum offered in this District. Direct questions to Civil Rights Officer, Wendy Dubuisson Note from the Superintendent Dear Parents and District Residents: The June issue of the Pride is always one to look forward to, when we are able to showcase so many of the fantastic activities and achievements of our students this year! It was truly a wonderful year of growth! Please be sure to check out all that our students have been up to! While we have been very proud of our educational offerings for years, it was very gratifying to receive word that Fennville High School was named to the US News and World Report’s 2013 listing of the best high schools in America! Please see the related article on the back cover for more information. Congratulations to our entire school community for all of their efforts which have culminated in this recognition! Congratulations also go to our newest Fennville alumni in the Class of 2013! They have achieved great things during their time with us, and we are looking forward with great confidence to hearing about their future successes! This year I was again struck by the tremendous amount of scholarship money received by our graduates! Much of this scholarship money comes from local sources, and we are very thankful for your support as our young people move on to higher education. I would also like to thank all of those voters who showed their support for our students in our recent successful sinking fund election. This annual income will help to augment our ability to make repairs and improvements while maintaining a rich educational experience for students in the classroom. You can be certain that in these difficult economic times we are continuing to develop our district budget in the most fiscally prudent way possible, while keeping kids first! Fennville Public Schools stands ready to welcome any new students for the fall! Early registration helps us be able to make the best arrangements possible for students. Parents may register new students in the Central Office (located behind the Middle School) during the summer months. School offices open for regular hours beginning Monday, August 19. The first day of the 2013-14 school year will be Tuesday, September 3. We hope you are able to relax and enjoy the beautiful summer weather with family and friends, and look forward to seeing you again in the fall! A Daddy/Daughter Dance was held at the Fennville Elementary School to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The school’s Relay for Life Team, “Hawks for Hope,” hosted the dance. Daughters and their “Dads” spent the evening enjoying good music, delicious cupcakes, and most importantly, time together for a good cause. A total of $800.00 was raised and will go towards helping cancer patients in the Allegan County and Lakeshore area. A big “Thank you” goes out to the community, the school, and all the individuals who donated their time and talents that helped make this event such a success Paine Award Goes to a GREAT Volunteer! In 2007, the Mueller family donated money to the Elementary Library to buy bean bag chairs. After six years of use with many students sitting on them they were getting very worn. Mrs. Darlene Hollander, who volunteers in the elementary library wanted to give them a longer life. She made new covers for them and cut up sponge cushions into chunks to use for the filling. Now they are like new again! Thank you Mrs. Hollander! Mrs. Hollander was also honored at graduation this year for being nominated and winning the Paine Volunteerism Award! Congratulations on a well-deserved award! Earth Club! Summer Reading/ Math Program The Elementary Summer Reading and Math Program begins on June 24, 2013 and will run through August 1, 2013. The program is four days per week, Monday through Thursday. No classes on the 4th! Second grader Ischel Barreiro decided that Fennville Elementary building and playground could use some cleaning up. She single handedly started an Earth Club. Along with some fellow second graders, they spent their recess time doing some cleaning. With her Mother’s help they designed a t-shirt, had them printed and even paid for a couple of students to get theirs. Thanks to Ischel, her Mom, and the members of the Earth Club: Joe Ferrell, Philippe Clark, Alyssa Hoggard, Yaely Correa Olvera, Ashley Mojica, Gaby Orozco, Jordan Nead, Ischel, Elizah Barreiro, Vanessa Andrade, Elena Diaz, and Lucas Achterhof. 4 Elementary Battle Of The Books Elementary Reading Night Second Grade Teacher Mr. Kiel Reads To Families! Elementary readers proved they were the All-Stars in this year’s Battle of the Books. All Star Readers defeated the Awesome Speeder Readers, Pseudonymous Battlers, and Radical Readers with a total of 481 points to win the four week competition. Thirty students were involved in the battle this year. As teams they had to read fifteen books from a variety of authors and genres. They would meet regularly to discuss and show how much they knew about the books. Some weeks teams tied and other weeks they were separated by a just a couple of points. It was a great season of competition. Thank you to the coaches who met with teams weekly to work on the books. Also thanks to our moderators Principal Albert Lombard, Superintendent Dirk Weeldreyer, Fennville Children’s Librarian Karmen Kooyers, and Mrs. Carol Josefowicz, who helped by coming in each week and asking questions about the books. We had a great season and plans are already in the works for the 2014 season! On March 12th, 2013, families at Fennville Elementary School enjoyed Family Reading Night. There were over one-hundred students who attended! At Family Reading Night students enjoyed story book themed snacks that included green eggs from “Green Eggs and Ham” and carrots from “Peter Rabbit.” Parents learned about the fundamentals and the components of reading while students listened to teachers read stories aloud. Together, families learned about how to choose just the right book and how to read to and with their children. Students that came to Family Reading Night got to choose two new books to take home. They also received a book bag with a bookmark, reading tracking tool and a bag of popcorn for a reading snack. At the end of the evening, students listened to teachers read their favorite books aloud. Thank you to all who volunteered and thank you to all who attended Family Reading Night! It was a great success! The Fennville Educational Foundation helps make reading fun! Fifth Grade students are improving their reading skills thanks to a mini-grant given by the Fennville Educational Foundation. Easi-speak microphones were purchased with the grant. These special microphones record and store voices, while students read. Students can even listen back to their past recordings. These students can hear how much they have improved their fluency and speed since the beginning of the school year. Now they can hear the difference that their hard work has made. Way to read 5th graders! We appreciate you, Fennville Educational Foundation! Second Graders Learn About Jellyfish! Be careful! Watch out for the stinging tentacles of the swimming jellies. Jellyfish actually pulsate and suck water in and push it out to move through the water. Ms. Skellie’s second graders have been reading about Jellyfish while practicing their reading strategies. They had a jellyfish project over spring break to create a jelly and write about it. What a magnificent sea of jellies they created! Middle School 5 7th Grade Camp Camp Pendalouan recently welcomed sixty-six Fennville Middle School 7th graders and eleven Fennville High School student counselors for a three-day visit. Students participated in a Dutch auction, hiking, rock-wall climbing, a high-ropes course, square dancing, campfires, sports, canoeing, archery, Geo-vivaling, life in the woods (survival skills), singing, and many interactive/teamwork games. Fun was had by all who attended. For more information about Camp Pendalouan, please visit their website (www.pendalouan.org). Another Successful Washington D.C. Trip On April 21 seventy 8th grade students left for the annual class trip to Washington D.C. The group was blessed with safe travel and beautiful weather. It was a nice change from the awfully cold and wet April the students were experiencing at home. En route to Washington D.C. the students had the opportunity to stop in Gettysburg, PA for a day. While there they were able to learn about the Battle of Gettysburg, and how it affected the outcome of the Civil War and the future of the United States. The students were also able to tour the Shriver House which gives them insight into what life was like for civilians living in a war torn city. The time spent in D.C was packed with visits to many important historical sites. The students were able to tour the US Capitol building and many of our national monuments. They were also given time to tour the Smithsonian Air and Space museum, the National Archives, and the Holocaust Memorial. The last day of the trip included tours of Mt. Vernon and Arlington National Cemetery where the students were able to witness the famous changing of the guard ceremony. After packing many tours and sites into a short amount of time the students were ready to unwind. They were able to do so during a stop at Medieval Times. This was a great chance for the students to relax and eat a great meal before the long bus ride home. This years trip participants would like to thank all of those that helped to make the trip possible. Without the sacrifices made by their family and community members many students would not have been able to attend. 6 Middle School Student of the Month Student of the Month Recognition Selection Process The Student of the Month photo and information will be displayed on the Student Council bulletin board. Each student of month is taken out to lunch on their selected month. Students are nominated based on the team members’ perceptions as they consider students who: • demonstrate service to school and community • are academically conscientious- do not have to be honor roll but continue to try and work to potential • exemplify courtesy and consideration for others • are cooperative, cheerful, and serve as a positive role model to other students Sponsored by: 2012-2013 Month October November December January February March April May 6th Grade Matthew Sanchez Justin Underwood Jessica Mendoza Erika Haywood Matthew Mcallister Macy Ilmberger Julian Islas Rosendo Jovanna Dela Rosa 7th Grade Johanna Diaz Luis Villalobos Molly Latchaw Alex Tietsort lsa Marquez Cameron Downer Kayla Koeller Michael Fuller 8th Grade Anna De Mann Salvador Mariano Kathy Hernandez George Castle Hannah Canfield Garett Dragon Kirsten Harrison Mathew Korman MS Honor Roll Students Named Essay Contest Winners! Both girls entered prints that they created for the Advanced Portfolio class with Mrs. Stratton. Congratulations to both artists! Nearly 1,000 Michigan high school students-artists have been invited to attend the event. The students were chosen from more than 250,000 across the state. Students are selected via a rigorous decision process adhering to artist standards. The scholars represented multiple artistic disciplines, including creative writing, dance, media arts, instrumental, vocal music, music composition, theater and visual arts. Great job Hilary! “Student schedules for 2013-14 will be mailed the week of August 12. It began when Fennville potter, Dawn Soltysiak, came to the classroom to demonstrate her wheel throwing technique. In addition, they learned about the business of being a working artisan, studio owner, grant writer, beekeeper, and farmer. After being inspired by Dawn’s example, all of the High School Art classes and the Art Club crafted their own pottery to be fired in the ancient method called “pit firing”. In May, a bus load of Art students spent the day at Dawn’s business, Khnemu Studio on Fernwood Farms. After a tour of the studio, solar powered farm, gallery, and animal pens, the students prepared the pottery for the firing, then they loaded the pit, layering it with wood, straw, and a variety of materials including banana peels. Mrs. Soltysiak took care of lighting the fire as the students looked on, and she fed the fire through the night. A group of National Art Honor Society students came back the next day to unload the pit and pack up for the trip back to school. A display of the beautifully fired ceramics was showcased in the high school. 9 Athletics Educational Material for Parents and Students (Content Meets MDCH Requirements) Sources: Michigan Department of Community Health. CDC and the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) UNDERSTANDING CONCUSSION Some Common Symptoms Headache Pressure in the Head Nausea/Vomiting Dizziness Balance Problems Double Vision Blurry Vision Sensitive to Light Sensitive to Noise Sluggishness Haziness Fogginess Grogginess Poor Concentration Memory Problems Confusion “Feeling Down” Not “Feeling Right” Feeling Irritable Slow Reaction Time Sleep Problems WHAT IS A CONCUSSION? A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that changes the way the brain normally works. A concussion is caused by a fall, bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth. A concussion can be caused by a shaking, spinning or a sudden stopping and starting of the head. Even a “ding,” “getting your bell rung,” or what seems to be a mild bump or blow to the head can be serious. A concussion can happen even if you haven’t been knocked out. You can’t see a concussion. Signs and symptoms of concussions can show up right after the injury or may not appear or be noticed until days or weeks after the injury. If the student reports any symptoms of a concussion, or if you notice symptoms yourself, seek medical attention right away. A student who may have had a concussion should not return to play on the day of the injury and until a health care professional says they are okay to return to play. IF YOU SUSPECT A CONCUSSION: 1. SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION RIGHT AWAY – A health care professional will be able to decide how serious the concussion is and when it is safe for the student to return to regular activities, including sports. Don’t hide it, report it. Ignoring symptoms and trying to “tough it out” often makes it worse. 2. KEEP YOUR STUDENT OUT OF PLAY – Concussions take time to heal. Don’t let the student return to play the day of injury and until a heath care professional says it’s okay. A student who returns to play too soon, while the brain is still healing, risks a greater chance of having a second concussion. Young children and teens are more likely to get a concussion and take longer to recover than adults. Repeat or second concussions increase the time it takes to recover and can be very serious. They can cause permanent brain damage, affecting the student for a lifetime. They can be fatal. It is better to miss one game than the whole season. 3. TELL THE SCHOOL ABOUT ANY PREVIOUS CONCUSSION – Schools should know if a student had a previous concussion. A student’s school may not know about a concussion received in another sport or activity unless you notify them. SIGNS OBSERVED BY PARENTS: • • • Appears dazed or stunned Is confused about assignment or position Forgets an instruction • Can’t recall events prior to or after a hit or fall • Is unsure of game, score, or opponent • Moves clumsily • • • Answers questions slowly Loses consciousness (even briefly) Shows mood, behavior, or personality changes CONCUSSION DANGER SIGNS: In rare cases, a dangerous blood clot may form on the brain in a person with a concussion and crowd the brain against the skull. A student should receive immediate medical attention if after a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body s/he exhibits any of the following danger signs: • • • • One pupil larger than the other Is drowsy or cannot be awakened A headache that gets worse Weakness, numbness, or decreased coordination • • • • Repeated vomiting or nausea Slurred speech Convulsions or seizures Cannot recognize people/places • Becomes increasingly confused, restless or agitated • Has unusual behavior • Loses consciousness (even a brief loss of consciousness should be taken seriously.) HOW TO RESPOND TO A REPORT OF A CONCUSSION: If a student reports one or more symptoms of a concussion after a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body, s/he should be kept out of athletic play the day of the injury. The student should only return to play with permission from a health care professional experienced in evaluating for concussion. During recovery, rest is key. Exercising or activities that involve a lot of concentration (such as studying, working on the computer, or playing video games) may cause concussion symptoms to reappear or get worse. Students who return to school after a concussion may need to spend fewer hours at school, take rests breaks, be given extra help and time, spend less time reading, writing or on a computer. After a concussion, returning to sports and school is a gradual process that should be monitored by a health care professional. Remember: Concussion affects people differently. While most students with a concussion recover quickly and fully, some will have symptoms that last for days, or even weeks. A more serious concussion can last for months or longer. It was a wonderful day celebrating with the graduates, their family, and friends. A total of twenty-two completed their high school credentials this year, with eight earning the high school diploma and fourteen earning the GED. This year’s graduating class’ advice to incoming students? “Never give up! Give it all you’ve got and have lots of hope…keep moving forward with your education…stay focused, if you stay on your game, big doors will open for you…you can do anything you set your mind to…READ, the more you learn, the easier it gets…just do it! Don’t be afraid to fall, only then will you learn how to spread your wings and fly. Try your best, you can do it! It may be hard at times, but it is the chance to really be somebody…” Thinking about getting your GED? Please take our advice and make every effort to complete it before 2014! In January, the GED will be completely revamped and become more difficult, those who have testing in progress would have to start all over again. Do not get your GED online or via correspondence, they are not legitimate and are expensive. Come to our program to study and prepare and take your tests at an Official Testing Center. Fennville Adult/Alternative Learning Center will guide and support you. THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2013! Debt Levy Reduced Again In August 2012, the Board of Education refinanced the district’s long-term debt from the 2004 bond issue, saving district taxpayers more than $1.3 million over the remaining life of those loans. As a result, the Board of Education has now been able to reduce the 2013 tax levy for the debt service fund from 4.9 mills to 4.6 mills (a savings nearly equal to the amount approved in the sinking fund vote)! The reduction in taxes is part of the Board’s ongoing effort to provide our students with the highest quality education, while doing so at the best value for taxpayers.
