Kindergarten Field Trip! Fennville Elementary received approximately $2,600 in grant money through Fuel Up to Play 60 and the United Dairy Industry of Michigan. With the funds students had fruit smoothies, yogurt/ fruit parfaits, and had taste testing with a variety of dairy products, grains, vegetables, and fruits. The funds were also used to purchase shoe tokens for the mileage club and sport stacking cups. We would like to thank our 15 fifth grade students for taking the role to implement the FUTP 60 program. They did a great job! The Kindergartners took a fun field trip to Tuesink’s pony farm. A big THANK YOU to Cowhill Yacht Club for a grant to help pay for the transportation for our trip. Thank You Fennville Educational Foundation Thank you to the Fennville Educational Foundation for the grant given for “A Leap Into Reading” for our Kindergartners! We love to read with the TAG readers and to build words on the word builders! The Scribble & Writes have helped us to practice our letters and shapes too! It is wonderful to be able to bring new exciting technology to our young students! Thanks for your support with literacy in the classroom!! Go Blackhawks! From Mrs. Niemyjski & The Ladybug Class 4 Elementary Fennville Educational Foundation – We Thank You For Our Grant! The second graders in Mrs. Chappell’s and Mrs. McGee’s classrooms would like to thank the Fennville Educational Foundation for the wonderful and much needed reading and math manipulatives added to their classrooms this year. The reading supplies purchased from the Fennville Educational grant were chosen to supplement the Daily 5 best practice, listening to Reading. The classrooms received 4 personal CD players, batteries, and a set of wonderful picture books with CDs. The students really enjoy listening to, and reading along with the awesome picture books. The math manipulatives purchased from the Perrigo Math and Science Grant were chosen to provide additional practice with the second grade math curriculum through the use of games. Math at My Seat and Second Grade Math Library games highlight 2nd grade skills such as adding, subtracting, comparing numbers, measuring, probability, graphing, and geometry. These reading and math supplies offer fun and extra practice on skills that are needed for the students’ success in third grade. Thank you again Fennville Educational Foundation for allowing us the opportunity to build on our student’s strengths and help them conquer their weaknesses with these amazing and helpful additions to our classrooms. Thank You Fennville Educational Foundation Thanks to their generous gift to my class I have been able to purchase “Tag Readers” and books for my class. These “Tag Readers” are providing opportunity for my class to take several different approaches to reading, based on their skill level. Along with the readers I was also able to purchase several sets of books that focused on the skills that we are teaching in Kindergarten; long and short vowel sounds and Sight-words. My hope, through this grant, is to provide as many opportunities for the girls as possible with books in their hands. I want them to gain an appreciation for reading and learning to read. We appreciate your generosity and look forward to sharing this gift with future classes. From Mrs. Schmidt Elementary 5 Fennville Students Benefit From S.P.L.A.S.H. Grant What would it take to get over 700 students, parents and staff members at Fennville Elementary School to stand in one line? Tickets for the latest singing sensation or a must-see movie release? Last Friday the answer was: A Healthy Appetite! Having just completed a school-wide A.C.E.S. event (All Children Exercising Simultaneously), the line snaked down hallways as everyone was treated to a healthful “re-fueling” snack consisting of a mini-pita sandwich and fruit/veggie juice, courtesy of a grant from S.P.L.A.S.H. (Shaping Positive Lifestyles & Attitudes through School Health). Dr. Betzi Howard keeps the line moving Students were reminded of the benefits of making good choices where their eating habits are concerned, and they were encouraged to participate in those choices. Parents were reminded that children (like adults) are more likely to eat, and enjoy, foods they help bring to the table. Some of the ways that even very young children can participate is by including them in meal planning and grocery shopping. Another way is by growing healthful foods, either in a plotor container garden, or most easily by “sprouting”. A small, easy-to-maintain sprout jar can be a delightful way to encourage better snack and meal choices by combining a child’s “harvest” into other healthful foods such as salads or sandwiches. Start with a whole-wheat pocket pita, cut in half. (Your child might prefer using a whole wheat tortilla for a roll-up snackwich instead). Provide several fresh chopped options: tomato, bell pepper, onion, broccoli, mushrooms, lettuce or sprouts, and any other healthy foods your child likes. This is also a great way to introduce new foods. Add some mustard or sandwich spread (check labels for nutritional information) or help your child make this healthier alternative to Ranch Dressing: Mix one or two tablespoons of dry Ranch Seasoning Mix to a cup of yogurt. Let stand overnight to absorb flavors. Tip: keep some in a squeeze bottle in the fridge for easy use! Remember, when it comes to making healthy choices, we can all “get in line”! Snackwich Foundation Grant Buys Science Books The fourth grade sends out a big thank you to the Fennville Educational Foundation. Thanks to the grant, we were able to purchase class sets of five titles, all which tie into our science curriculum. All the books are a part of the science kits, supporting the experiments and investigations in those kits. We were able to purchase Who Eats What?, Discovering Electricity, What Makes a Magnet, What is the World Made of?, and The Moon Seems to Change. The students have enjoyed being hands on with the books, exploring concepts such as electricity, magnets, food webs, and moon phases. Thank you again, Fennville Educational Foundation! U.P.” program. “Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, a federally funded grant, targets 6-12 grade schools that serve children of poverty. The purpose of the grant is to help provide structures and support for a rigorous, standards based curriculum that prepares students for post secondary education. Working with a cohort model that begins in sixth grade and ends when the students have completed twelfth grade, the GEAR UP Learning Center projects, through a school-university partnership, are broadly adaptive to the unique needs of individual schools and communities. The GEAR UP project is based upon a systematic focus on school reform, professional development, student/family support and community engagement in order to prepare students socially and academically for post-secondary education.” (From the Western Michigan University website: http://www.wmich.edu/gearup/purpose.htm ) As part of this cohort, our students were able to take a college day visit to WMU in the Spring. Students experienced college life, toured campus, saw classrooms, talked with students and ate in the cafeteria. Western also offers summer academic camps directly on campus. Many of our students applied for this opportunity. This partnership will continue with our students through their senior year of high school. Plans are in the works for a college day visit as well as after school tutoring and mentorship programs for the 2012-2013 school year. We are thrilled to be working together with WMU to provide unique learning experiences for our Fennville students. 6th Grade Principals List (All A’s) Madyson DeRoo Braden Griffin Molly Latchaw 6th Grade Honor Roll (A’s & B’s) Maegan Anderson Doug Bellenger McKayla Brenner Jacob Brown Hernan Burgett Alexis Burt Hunter Buter Ana Callejas Valerie Capman Jacqueline Diaz Cameron Downer Michael Fuller Josie Galiger Alejandra Garcia Daniela Garcia Diego Garcia Brianna Hoffman Richard Hopson Sydney Johnson Isabela Marquez Gustavo Medrano Matthew Morales Zachary Nolan Jessica Pena Valeria Puente Gabriela Quiroz Juan Romero Maite Salamanca Alexis Saylor Maria Schaeffer Justin Schut Jan Serrato Josie Sherwood Jadellen Stedman Deziree Suarez Alexander Tietsort Kamryn VanDyke Amber Veen 7th grade Principal List (All A’s) Sydnie Avery Brianna Baldiga Amanda Chappell Garrett Dragan Elizabeth Garcia Marissa Latchaw Julian Martinez Vanessa Martinez Megann Mikesell Allyson Moralez Dan Palencia Madison Raak 7th grade Honor Roll (A’s & B’s) Destiny Aguilar Jada Allen Kiefer Brenner Hanna Brown Kiley Burt Gabriella Cabrera Guadalupe Calderon Hanna Canfield Rebeca Castillo George Castle Isaac Church 6th Grade Principals List (All A’s) Douglas Bellenger Madyson DeRoo Molly Latchaw 6th Grade Honor Roll (A’s & B’s) Maegan Anderson Meghan Baldiga Ryan Bale McKayla Brenner Jacob Brown Hernan Burgett Alexis Burt Valerie Capman Samantha Culver Johana Diaz Josie Galiger Alejandra Garcia Daniela Garcia Braden Griffin Briana Hoffman Richard Hopson Sydney Johnson Shyloh Kruger Zachary Nolan Jessica Pena Valeria Puente Gabriela Quiroz Juan Romero Estevan Rosas Maite Salamanca Maria Schaeffer Justin Schut Jan Serrato Josie Sherwood Alexander Tietsort Dakota Vanderyacht Brianna Veen 7th grade Principal List (All A’s) Rebeca Castillo Amanda Chappell Garrett Dragan Marissa Latchaw Allyson Moralez 7th grade Honor Roll (A’s & B’s) Sydnie Avery Cayla Baker Brianna Baldiga Kiefer Brenner Kiley Burt Gabrielle Cabrera George Castle Samuel Cavada Carlos DeLaRosa Maria DeLucas Raul Echevarria Andres Garcia Elizabeth Garcia Kirsten Harrison Carlos DeLaRosa Maria DeLucas Andres Garcia Carlos Garcia Kirsten Harrison Mathew Korman Emily Laguna-Perez Adam Marriot Raul Mendoza Kim Morales Caitlyn Paauwe Kelsey Phelps Alejandra Pinon Benjamin Renkema Antonio Reyes Brittany Sale Nathan Suarez Alec Vanderbok 8th Grade Principal’s List (All A’s) Abigail Beissel Lindsay Cossey Taylor Davis Esmeralda Echevarria Victoria LiddardEngland Danielle McKellips Jacob Morse Kortny Overhiser Jasmine Saintz Aaron Scovill Hunter Shaw 8th Grade Honor Roll (A’s & B’s) Dylan Aalderink Rebeca Anderson Artemis Brown Luis Carranza Katie Creekmore Roberto Gonzalez Alison Gort Russell Groenewoud Clodoveo Hughes Tori Machan Cristian Marquez Hailey Martin Melissa Medrano Mary Mendoza Cynthia Meza Giovanny Morales Cliff Morse Cameron Obbink Adam Overhiser Alex Overhiser Kelsy Overhiser Eliya Pantoja Matthew Polk Jared Radabaugh Isaac Ramirez Rogelio Romero Elliana Sauceda Donovan Saylor Hannah Schneider Kyle Scurio Esmeralda Suarez Yesenia Tapia Nicholas Tietsort Aaron Vind Heather Wilson Breana Zachery 4th Quarter Mathew Korman Emily Laguna-Perez Julian Martinez Vanessa Martinez Megann Mikesell Saul Morales Kimberly Morales Dan Palencia Kelsey Phelps Madison Raak Licet Romero Lauryn Saylor Nathan Suarez 8th Grade Principal’s List (All A’s) Abigail Beissel Lindsay Cossey Taylor Davis Tori Machan Hailey Martin Danielle McKellips Cliff Morse Jacob Morse Adam Overhiser Kelsy Overhiser Kortny Overhiser Aaron Scovill Hunter Shaw 8th Grade Honor Roll (A’s & B’s) Dylan Aalderink Karla Acevedo Rebeca Anderson Katie Arriola-Estrada Pablo Barrera Artemis Brown Luis Carranza Esmeralda Echevarria Roberto Gonzalez Alison Gort Russell Groenewoud Raymond Grostick Sierra Kelch Victoria LiddiardEngland Melissa Medrano Marisela Mendez Cynthia Meza Giovanny Morales Gustavo Morales Cameron Obbink Alex Overhiser Eliya Pantoja Jared Radabaugh Elliana Sauceda Hannah Schneider Esmeralda Suarez Bobby Tillery II Trevor Westenbroek Isaac White Heather Wilson Breana Zachery High School Notes from the Band Room! This honors band took place on May 10th12th, and was made up of Michigan’s top scoring students from State Solo and Ensemble Festival. This makes Hilary one of the top four tenor saxophone players in the entire state! We are very proud of her accomplishment and representation of the Fennville Band Program! Congratulations to high school students Emily Hamel, Hilary Hunsberger, and Matthew Derrick for receiving first division ratings at District Solo and Ensemble Festival, and continuing onto State Solo and Ensemble. The following high school students were selected for and participated in the Hope College Honors Band: Jodi Todd, Monica Lanphear, Hilary Hunsberger, Ryan Schmuck, Allison Clark, Matthew Derrick, Emily Hamel, and Caesar Ortiz. The following high school students were selected for and participated in the Allegan County Honors Band: Jodi Todd, Matthew Derrick, Ryan Schmuck, Emily Hamel, and Ryan Gillette. The following students participated in middle school solo and ensemble festival this spring: Cameron Obbink, Kortny Overhiser, Kelsy Overhiser, and Katie Arriola-Estrada. All four students played solo pieces and did a great job! All band students grades 6th-12th accomplished a great deal this school year, and finished strong with their spring concert performances. A special thank you to the 8th grade band and high school students for their service to the community by taking part in the Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony. 8th grade and high school students: Save the dates for band camp (August 6-11 is band camp, and July 31August 2 is pre-camp)! Make sure you have received a 2012 Marching Band packet in the mail. If you have not, please contact Ms. Foss at [email protected]. See you on July 31st for pre-band camp! Attention incoming 6th grade students! It is not too late to sign up for band for the upcoming school year! Even if you missed the meeting in May, make sure your student is still signed up for band. You may visit the Meyer Music Store in Holland (or call at 616-396-6583), and they will get you set up with an instrument rental plan. Please email Ms. Foss with any further questions. I look forward to making music with brand new band students in the fall! Thank you to everyone who contributes to the Fennville Band Program, for making this a successful year! Fennville Educational Foundation Always Helps A special Thank you goes out to the Fennville Educational Association for supplying the TI-CX Calculators. Mrs. Howard’s math classes at the Middle School and High School were able to use ten of the new TI-CX Graphing Calculators this year. The calculators were used for various lessons, allowing for students to manipulate graphs of functions and see how the equations changed. Students also used the calculators for a geometry unit, where students found the area of irregular shaped regions. In Algebra, students used the calculators while they were connected to the CBR (motion detector) to see a graph relating their distance away from the CBR with time. 7 8 High School National Honor Society: Building Character through Service On March 27, several members of the National Honor Society patrolled campus with gloves and garbage bags looking for trash to collect. Helping around campus in that way is only one example of National Honor Society members volunteering their time to help their school and their community. In their own words: • Margan Parmer (2013). “I did my community service through helping out the elderly. I helped out my neighbor who is older with anything that he and his wife couldn’t get to or anything around the house that they needed. Helping out my neighbors made me appreciate and respect our elders more. It opened my eyes to the fact that we need each other. Older people sometimes need the young for their physical needs, and the young need their elders for their wisdom, knowledge and experience. Helping people in such a way that I never knew I could makes me feel accomplished. It makes me feel that I made an impact. This teaches responsibility in action. This community service made me realize that the littlest things are sometimes what matter the most.” have taken my skills and have volunteered at the middle school a few times each month, working with younger band members. We go over proper technique, using a strong air support and tonguing notes. We also go over rhythms and notes they find difficult. I have enjoyed teaching them very much. They are very pleased when they learn a hard rhythm or finally hit the right pitch, expanding their musical abilities. This not only helps the individual student, but it also helps the band grow overall. By teaching just one student, they have the ability to share and pass their new skills onto others. This cycle of learning will lead to a stronger, better sounding band. Balance, blending, intonation all improve. Music has been a big part of my life, and I am glad that I am able to share my love of music with others.” • Lucero Puente (2013). “Volunteering at Golden Orchards Assisted Living was definitely a worthy experience. I got the chance to communicate with customers who attended the craft fair, some were fresh faces and others were community friends. The best part about my participation was being able to interact with the seniors. It’s no doubt that • Hilary Hunsberger (2013). “As a mem- they love seeing young teenage faces ber of the National Honor Society, I and sharing memories with us. During this school year, at any assisted living home and feel as I have found myself going over those great about it as I did.” five hours. I volunteer at the elementary school and tutor two fifth grade • Emily Cossey (2013). “Being a National students. Throughout this school year, Honor Society member is not all about I have had the privilege of seeing their doing well in school; it’s about being independence and self-confidence in involved in the community too. I like school grow. I have also volunteered to get involved in my community by at the Middle School. Also, I waitressing at the Chamber of Compeer-mentor a high school student. In merce dinner, and serving chili at the doing this, I get to see understanding Relay for Life chili dinner. I enjoy doing grow. As a member of National Honor things like this because it helps build Society I am able to see many positive character. Character is an important impacts in the Fennville community thing to have. It includes admirable occur, and I hope that all of the people traits like honesty and responsibility, I have helped will take aspects of their and those traits are essential in life. Dolives into their own hands and become ing community service and volunteer leaders in our Fennville community work helps develop these traits because it teaches you how to be responand in their future communities.” sible and it makes you a more caring • Emily Hamel (2013). “I have been in person. I am greatly looking forward to band for six years. I have learned a lot doing more volunteer work and makabout music within those six years. Guadalupe earned a 3.96 GPA at Fennville High School and will be attending the University of Michigan in the fall. While at the U of M, Guadalupe will major in Nuclear Engineering. The Salutatorian for the Class of 2012 is Alyssa Nelson. Alyssa is the daughter of Craig and Mary Nelson. Alyssa earned a 3.94 GPA at FHS and will be attending the University of Michigan in the fall. Alyssa is undecided as to what she will pursue as a major. Band Mini Grant-“Individual Instrumental Instruction” Many students in grades 6th-12th have benefitted from a grant given to the band program by the Fennville Educational Foundation. Ms. Foss was able to bring in three fantastic instructors to work with students who play trumpet, flute, and percussion. Ross Huber, who is getting a Masters Degree in Trumpet Performance from Michigan State University, came and spent a day working with the trumpet players in each band. Natalie Unsworth, who has a degree in Flute Performance from Central Michigan University, and will be starting a Masters Degree in Flute Performance from Boston University in the fall, came and spent a day working with the flute players in each band. Jordan Radvansky, a member of the Grand Valley State University Drumline, came and taught all percussionists in each of the bands. All students were able to gain new, specific information about fundamentals for their instruments from quality instructors. This was a great opportunity for the students, and they were able to take new knowledge with them for everyday use in band class! As students improve individually, the band as a whole improves. Ms. Foss is grateful to the Fennville Educational Foundation for providing many of her students with an opportunity for small group instruction from someone who is an expert in their instrumental area. During the four day trip students and chaperones were able to explore many of the great attractions in both Gettysburg, PA, and Washington D.C. Some of the highlights included; the battlefields of Gettysburg, the Smithsonian Museums, a D.C. memorial/monument tour, Mt. Vernon, the Arlington National Cemetery, and many more. The week was capped off with an exciting night of feasting and entertainment at a medieval tournament. Overall the trip went very well. The staff and students who attended would like to thank all who were involved in making this trip possible. It truly is a great experience for the students and we are already looking forward to next year.
