STUDY GROUP TOMIKI AIKIDO
STUDY GROUP TOMIKI AIKIDO – Sunday 26th June, 2016 For this morning’s session in attendance were five of us including our guest from Brazil, Carlos Andre Yamada Machado. He is a student of Sensei Roberto Chrysostomo in Brazil. More often, he attends twice a week to train with Sensei Ingmar in Leiden, Netherlands. Andre studied Aikido with Eddy briefly in the past and is not related to Yamada Sensei. :-) After our warming up, which included Ayumi Ashi and Tsugi Ashi drills, we looked at opening and closing actions when applied to our five basic hand blade movements. We began by looking at finer details in the solo exercises then doing them in pairs and following the Sotai Dosa sequence. "OPENING, CLOSING, FINGERS AND THUMBS" Outside Turn is performed by first closing the body the opening the body. The thumb leads the hand action. Inside Turn is performed by first opening the body then closing the body. The little finger leads the hand action and must not be the thumb. Inside Sweep is performed by first closing the body then opening the body then closing again while doing Tsugi Ashi. This must not be interpreted as opening and closing the armpit. The little finger always leads the hand action. Outside Sweep is performed by first opening the body and then closing the body. The little finger leads the hand action. Major or Big Circle is performed by first closing the body, the thumb leads the front hand action as the arm closes towards the body. With the rear hand the little finger leads the hand action. In performing the movement, the little finger of the front hand leads the hand action as the arm makes Tegatana. Simultaneously the little finger of the rear hand leads the hand action. As the whole movement is completed the body opens. We looked at Jodan Kuzushi and how the opening and closing of the body affected these movements. It was a stimulating session which caused some confusion at first in when to open the body and when to close the body. And in the afternoon some Belgium culture and a celebration of the 30 year singing career of Gina's singing teacher and Countertenor, Peter Ickx. The concert, held at “SintMichielskerk” Church in Antwerp, began at 3pm ending at around 6pm with Peter joining a Zumba dance group with a display of one of his hidden talents and passions. Afterwards it was, "Party time". . . Several of us went to Lamorinierestraat, an exclusive part of Antwerp located within the Jewish community. What a fantastic event. With over 90 people attending we had an opportunity to meet and talk with some very interesting guests whilst constantly being fed and "watered" with some of Antwerp's finest wine, beer and luxurious nibbles. With the sunny warm late afternoon weather some younger guests decided to go swimming in the large garden pool whilst most of us listened to Jazz music piped from the converted Coach House situated at the end of the amply sized garden. We arrived home by midnight merry and slightly drunk! What a way to finish the Study Group sessions and to start a short summer break until we resume again in the autumn. And finally our Thanks extend to Eddy and Gina for a culturally stimulating weekend.
