And, as many of you know already, the WWHS Chorus has auditioned and been invited to sing at a National Youth Choir Festival at Carnegie Hall this month. The trip is going to be very expensive. The goal is $140,000. We have been told that it will cost each of the 48 students approximately $2100.00. Students and parent boosters have been working diligently all year to fund this trip. It will be an opportunity of a lifetime for many of these teens. The Choral Director, Morgan Burburan, plans to have the group visit the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, and the 9/11 memorial. They hope to go to 1-2 Broadway shows and participate in a Broadway workshop. The Garden Club has decided to focus on helping the WWHS Chorus to meet their lofty goal this spring. On January 26th, sixty plus generous members and friends gathered at the club for Bingo. This activity provided funding for our philanthropic endeavors and was an entertaining way to spend an evening. The net proceeds of the evening raised money for the Chorus. Thank you to all those who participated in a prosperous evening and special thanks to those of you who donated pg. 8 their winnings back to the students. On February 19th, the WWHS Chorus performed for us at our Post Valentine’s Day Celebration. Our president, Alicia Karam, presented the chorus with a check for $2500 towards their trip. The students were thrilled! A luncheon and business meeting followed the concert. The Garden Club would like to thank Lorraine Oatley for acting as our group photographer and providing us with great memories of this and all of our events. On Friday, March 11th, the Garden Club travelled by bus to Winter Park, Fl. What a day of fun and laughter was had with a morning stop at the Leu Gardens and an afternoon of lunch, shopping and a tour of the spectacular Morse Museum in the heart of downtown. It houses the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Louis C. Tiffany. This includes his magnificent stain glass windows and lamps. This museum is a gem! On Sunday, March 13th, the Garden Club sponsored a dinner for the People Helping People organization. Garden Club members purchased rotisserie chickens, baked potatoes, and helped to serve the meal. Many thanks to Sue Chapin and the volunteers who contributed their time and funds. The Branch has thirty members and consists of businesspersons, professionals and retirees. Several club members reside in Glenlakes. A group of volunteers with diverse ethnic, color, religious, political backgrounds and views, our common denominator is the safety and welfare of children. Whether for infants or teens, the Kiwanis Club of Spring Hill helps educate, feed, clothe or house children in need. Over the years, club members have contributed time, expertise, sweat equity, and financial support. They have demonstrated dedication and concern for the well-being of the children of Hernando County. We could not begin to document the individual and collective effort devoted to this cause. Among the organizations we support are The Boys and Girls Club, Arc of the Nature Coast, Lighthouse for the Blind, People Helping People, First Tee, the YMCA and Barney’s kids. Out primary fund raising activities include Barney’s Journal, Santa’s Pancake Breakfast and the children’s Marathon, held at Weeki Wachee State Park. We hope to add Glenlakes Bingo as another noteworthy fundraiser. Please join the members of the Kiwanis Club of Spring Hill at the clubhouse on Tuesday, APRIL 19, 2016 AT 6:30 PM for an evening of fun and camaraderie. Together we can help raise funds for the needy children of Hernando County. PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB The GlenLakes Photography Club convened for the first time in 2016 at Jim Hansen’s home on 16 February. We met to discuss upcoming topics and events and to display specific cameras and related photo gear. The next meetings are scheduled for the third Tuesday of each month at different homes. We welcome anyone who has an interest in photography, regardless of experience. We are a supporting and teaching group -- while still learning ourselves -- and are ready to help you take good pictures. Call Jim Hansen at 596-1415 or Bill Ohrenberger at 597-5611 for more information. pg. 14 PICKLEBALL Just a reminder that pickleball is being played here in GlenLakes on our beautiful new courts located next to the front tennis courts. We want to encourage all GlenLakes Club Members to come and give it a try. The new courts are superb and the game is fun to play. Open play is on Monday, Thursday and Saturday at 8:30 am; and on Wednesday afternoons, a group gets together at 1:00 pm. We certainly welcome and encourage all levels of play. If indeed you are a newbie to the game, other players are more than willing to work with you in learning the game so please don’t hesitate to come out and give it a try. Please note that extra paddles and balls are available only during these specific open play times. At any other time, you will have to provide your own equipment. Hope to see you on the courts. The tournament committee chaired by Nancy Vanglider with the assistance of Nina Bryant, Mary Ann Kaiser, Victoria Page, Leslie Roberts, Pam Rogers, Patti Radison, Joyce Thomas and Nelly VanBerlo did an outstanding job. The advertiser’s journal consisted of ads by 37 area stores and businesses and we want to thank them for their support. Without them, we could not have put on such an outstanding tournament. Please support these businesses. Three days of golf, starting with a practice round on Wednesday, was followed by two days of tournament play. The game for the tournament was an Eclectic format. Joe entered eternal life on March 7. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers are with Marianne and her children as they lay their husband, father and grandfather to rest. Joe was a tower of strength for his family until he began to suffer from a variety of illnesses in recent years. May he rest in peace and may we always hold a special spot for him in our hearts and memories. | APRIL 2016 April 23 - Festa D’Italiano Bocce Courts May 15th - End of the Year Dinner Papa Joe’s June TBD - Possible Outing to Lakeridge Winery July TBD - Movie Night at the Club We are finally experiencing the true beginning of spring; there are many more colorful birds and butterflies in our gardens these days and some of us have already turned on the air conditioners. Many of our guests from “the north” have left and now we get back to our “normal” lives. Whatever that means. For the IRC, we are preparing for our annual Festa d’Italia to be held April 23 by the bocce courts. Thank you, Matteo, for reserving the site and for securing the tables and chairs for this event. Ladies and gents, be sure to hone your cooking skills as we look forward to sampling all the different styles of cooking ziti, meatballs and eggplant; and, my favorite the many variety of desserts that are offered. As Dom De Louise would say, “are you sure it’s enough?” I have said it many times in the past, we eat well! Finally a reminder to sign up for the end of the year banquet to be held at Papa Joe’s on May 15th at 4:00 p.m. It is imperative to make your reservations early because the banquet room serves ninety so reservations will be made on a first come, first served basis. Thank you again to Matt for making the arrangements for this annual dinner. Enjoy the beautiful weather and please remember Marianne in your prayers. The writer’s block is somewhat improved, but there are no guarantees that it will not return at any moment, so if this article abruptly ends, you will understand why. Spring in Florida reminds us of why we decided to retire to the Sunshine State and except for the sneezing from the thick pollen, we simply love it here. Sneezing has occurred mid service motion and is extremely distracting. The server sneezes. Should the receiver say, “Bless you” or just concentrate on the service return. Since we’re not playing for money, the polite thing would be to say “Bless you” and call a let, first serve. Just made that rule up. The rule enforcement police will not enforce it so just play as you wish. The tennis and pickleball courts are busy. Your roving tennis reporter ventured onto the pickleball courts recently and with the help of John Grue and Mississippi George, managed to score a few points against experienced players. Thanks to them for partnering me in this endeavor and not laughing too much at my feeble attempts to hit that ball with the waaayyyy too short paddle. Practice, practice, practice. My performance elicited good natured laughter and comments from the Peanut Gallery, but there was no offence taken. After all, they had to be beginners once too. Scorekeeping is a little difficult, but they assured me I would learn quickly. Judy Jeanette also assured me that pickleball will improve a tennis player’s net game so the two sports complement each other. Any help with the net game is greatly appreciated. GlenLakes Snow Birds will be flying away soon. We’ll miss our friends and the wonderful facilities at GlenLakes especially our tennis courts. Our Court Guy, Auggie, takes such good care of our courts. Thank you Auggie for all your hard work and Judy, be ready to restring my racquet in October. Hope to see you on court soon and keep hitting that little yellow ball and that larger not so yellow pickleball. -Velma Judy Jeanette | Director of Tennis Cert. Elite USPTA Professional GOODBYE SNOWBIRDS We will miss you. Have safe journeys back to the North Country. We will see you again soon...Fall 2016! SPRING HAS SPRUNG Don’t you agree that this winter season just flew by! We weathered through some cold spells and dealt with the wind on many occasion, but overall, I thought it was a pg. 28 pretty darn nice fall and winter. It is the reason we live and play at GlenLakes. The rainy season will be upon us soon now that spring has arrived. All members will need to watch for and read all signs posted or listen to direct verbal instructions given by GlenLakes Staff, Auggie or Judy, concerning tennis court usage. If signs are posted that the courts are closed...that means that the courts are closed and do not play until the signs are taken down. If either Auggie or Judy directs you to “not play until advised otherwise” or “do not play...courts are closed”, you must follow instructions. Those members that disregard signs or instruction are in violation of rules that are provided by the club. When the courts are too wet for safe play, any action of trying to speed up the drying time by dragging brushes through puddles will not only harm the court surface but also damage the courts sub-surface. Below is a picture of damage to one of our courts. This happened even though a directive was given that the court too wet to use. The sub-surface of any tennis court is like the foundation of your house. If it is weakened...it will not support your house. The tennis court in the picture above cannot provide consistent play. The damaged spot will need to be worked on; material worked in, the area rolled and with time it will settle and match the rest of the playing surface area. Why would anyone cause this destruction? Simply waiting to play 30 to 60 minutes would have solved this issue. Go back home and come back a little later. Be patient. Please don’t do anything that will damage your courts. We are very lucky to have Auggie. He fixed the issue. However, it cost the club in extra man hours and heavy lifting of court materials and labor. Since I am on the subject...it is every member’s responsibility to play in proper attire and wear correct TENNIS shoes. I am GlenLakes Clubs, News & information aren’t really tennis shoes). When buying a pair of tennis WE HAVE SMILING FACES AT THE GLENLAKES shoes you must first inform the salesperson that you want a MIXERS WHERE FRIENDSHIP AND CAMARADERIE tennis shoe for TENNIS. Most TENNIS shoes will have the ARE SHARED! proper sole construction for all tennis court surfaces unless they are made specifically for grass or soft court play. The shoe will provide a smooth, not nubby or deeply grooved sole. Wearing the wrong shoe digs up the court surface and makes gouges in the surface. When playing with or against someone with the wrong shoes you will be faced with bad bounces. Murphy’s Law will dictate that the ball will land on one of the chewed up areas and it will bounce awkward or not at all. Below is a picture showing the damage of wearing improper sneaker/tennis shoe on the court. We all take pride in our tennis courts at GlenLakes Country Club. Please help keep our courts in tip top condition by following all the rules, having proper footwear and completely brushing the entire court surface (fence edge to net) and flossing the lines after completion of play. Your cooperation is appreciated.
