Today’s Tip: I always take a spare
pair of cheap reading glasses with
me on holiday just in case I either
lose mine or they break and then I

hitched: Joe and
Sinead in Antigua
Walking
What’s it like getting married in the
Caribbean? Iain Mayhew meets a British
couple tying the knot in Antigua
It’s 9.30 in the morning and Joe Birmingham is
nervously pushing half a tomato around his
breakfast plate. It’s a big day for Joe. In a few
hours, he and his long-term partner Sinead
Screeney will be walking up the aisle.
Well, not the aisle, exactly. More a
bougainvillea-strewn pathway lined with a
congregation of tiny lizards and
brightly-coloured humming
birds. And instead of a wheezy
organ there’ll be a steel band
cheerfully bonging out the
Wedding March.
Joe, a 43-year-old
electrician from
Broxbourne, Herts, and
Sinead, 37, who works in a
Grooming:
bank, have decided to leave
The relaxing
friends and family huddled
hotel spa
around their winter fires at home
and get married in the sunshine on the
Caribbean island of Antigua.
“Obviously it would be nice to have our
friends here. But we’ll hold a big party for
them at our local golf club when we get
home,” says Joe. “This way we’ve combined a
honeymoon with our wedding and it’s been
amazingly easy and stress-free.”
And, of course, there’s the question of
money. Unless you’re a member of the Royal
Family, grand weddings have become one of
the big casualties of the recession. According
to a survey of 2,000 couples by a
weddings insurance company, the
average cost of getting hitched in
the UK fell from £20,000 in 2008 to
£15,500 last year. But that’s still a
huge chunk out of, say, the
deposit on a first home.
Joe and Sinead will have spent
around £5,000 on their
“weddingmoon” at Sandals Grande
Antigua, one of the most luxurious
resorts in the Caribbean. Everything
will have been included – drinks, including
champagne, superb food in any one of its
eight main restaurants, all watersports off the
resort’s pristine white beaches and even the
marriage ceremony itself, apart from one or
two extras to make the Big Day a little more
Twelve reasons to push boat out
The Twelve, the quirky and delightful boutique
hotel in Bearna, is ignoring the recession to lay
on a recklessly extravagant package for the
Galway Races!
The deal (unofficially titled the You Could Probably Buy A Horse Cheaper package!) costs €2,012,
and is based on accommodation on any two
days and nights in Suite XII.
The decadence begins with a bottle
of vintage champagne on ice and
handmade chocolates awaiting your
arrival.
With its open fireplace that lights
with the flick of a switch, personalised bathrobes, double glass
shower for two and huge Jacuzzi,
giant plasma with surround
sound and cocktail wet bar, Suite
XII is designed to impress. The Galway Races at
The Twelve package also includes the Triple Celebration Menu in West, a gourmet menu created
in honour of the 3 latest great food and wine
awards recently won by this boutique Bearna
beauty.
You will be collected by helicopter and
whisked to Ballybrit for the races and return
the same way with your pockets full of
bookies’ cash although that last bit is not
guaranteed.
If for some reason, that package is a
bit rich, The Twelve also has a range of
wonderful standard packages, available
from just €180pp for two nights including dinner in West.
Check out www.thetwelvehotel.ie for all
the Galway Races specials.
