olverine For the Parents, Staff, and Students of Wellington High School Volume 16 / Issue 2 Beliefs aStudents’ learning needs are the primary focus of all decisions impacting the work of the school because each student is a valued individual with unique physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs. aA safe and physically comfortable environment promotes student learning. aTeachers, administrators, parents, students, and the community share the responsibility for advancing the school’s mission. aStudents learn in different ways and will be provided with a variety of instructional approaches to support their learning styles. aCultural diversity can increase students’ understanding of different peoples and cultures. aStudents need to not only demonstrate their understanding of essential knowledge and skills but also to be actively involved in solving problems and producing quality work. aA student’s self-esteem is enhanced by positive relationships and mutual respect among and between students and staff. Mission Statement Wellington Community High School seeks to provide a safe environment conducive to promoting lifelong learners and productive citizens who contribute to the community as a whole. This year show had special meaning for the 120+ students in the program. Each student in the program modeled what they made throughout the year and many made more than one garment. Additionally their teacher, Michelle Matella, watched on proudly as she assisted this group with their designs. She will be retiring after 37 years of service in Palm Beach County. We do want to give a shout out to our Producers and 8 Fashion Program completers. They are Summer Giasullo, Amanda Hausmann, Elvanice Privilma, Riley Nicholson, Philip Weiss, Elayna Whitten, Josie Wienges, and Nia Jones. They were dedicated to make this year’s show, Moonlight Masquerade, the biggest and best. They succeed and did a wonderful job. Best of luck in their future!! Advanced Placement United States History and Advanced Placement United States Government and Politics Advanced Placement United States History and AP United States Government and Politics summer packets are available for the 2016-2017 school year by contacting Mr. Sink (email [email protected]). The packets can be picked up in the front office. The upcoming school year will see a number of changes in both programs as the AP Government will be returning to a yearlong format and APUSH, having had a new examination implemented last year, will require an increased study of primary sources and a change in expected writing skills. The changes in AP Government will allow for a more measured pace with the ability to delve into the various topics with greater depth. The presentation of projects will now be feasible with the students being the entire focus of their creativity in preparing and presenting, in class, their group assignment. The support of each other’s efforts will foster teamwork and a sense of community. Homework will be at a minimum as more of the material will be examined and analyzed in class by the students. The College Board has changed the APUSH examination expecting greater application of critical thinking skills on the part of the participants. All multiple choice questions are now stimulus based with two to seven questions per stimulus item. The long form essays have been reduced from two to one item. The Document Based Question (DBQ) remains with the number of documents students are to analyze reduced to seven’ but students are expected to utilize all documents in their writing, as well as including a quantity of outside information. A new addition is the short answer question of which there are four. These are usually comparisons of positions by the more noted figures of United States History. Students are then expected to note events/activities/ other’s positions that are similar/dissimilar than that of the given excerpts. As with AP Government, homework will be at a relative minimum to allow students more prep time for class discussions and presentations. Projects will be assigned, and presented in class, periodically to enable students to express their understanding of the material in many varied and different manners. We look forward to a new and exciting year with each and every one of Wellington’s finest. Please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Sink for assistance. Have a safe, peaceful summer! Mr. Sink, Room 2145 Women of Tomorrow The Women of Tomorrow program here at W.H.S. has had another outstanding year! For those who are unaware, Women of Tomorrow is a program where “highly accomplished professional women” meet monthly with a small group of girls “to discuss ways to overcome obstacles and to provide skills for success.” Each year this mentoring and scholarship program awards thousands of dollars in scholarships to college-bound seniors, and this year two of our seniors were recognized. Congratulations to Deborah Colimon for receiving $1,000 and Za’Kiara O’Neal for receiving a four-year “full-ride” scholarship from Women of Tomorrow! AICE Program Continues to Grow Wellington High School’s AICE program has grown enormously from its original two courses to a full AICE Diploma program. In 2015 49 juniors (2016 graduates) were awarded their AICE Diplomas; four of those students earned AICE Diplomas of Merit and 28 students earned AICE Diplomas of Distinction. For the 2016 school year, 2,221 exams were administered, and 179 students applied for the AICE Diploma. Beginning in 2017, students must earn seven credits to qualify for the AICE Diploma and that seventh credit must be Global Perspectives. As a result, the Global Perspectives course continues to gain numbers. We currently have two sections of A Level Global Perspectives filled, along with nine sections of AS Global Perspectives. The AICE Diploma is an excellent move toward securing financing for Florida public universities. Currently, students who earn an AICE diploma (based on AICE exams taken and passed prior to high school graduation), complete the community service requirement, and submit their Florida Financial Aid Applications will earn the Florida Academic Scholars award. The AICE Diploma currently negates the G.P.A. and S.A.T./A.C.T. requirements for Bright Futures and also waives the state’s Physical Education and online course requirements. The AICE program also provides students an advantage in the college application process. Universities and employers worldwide recognize Cambridge qualifications. In particular, Cambridge International AS and A Level qualifications are recognized by universities as proof of the student’s ability to enter a degree course―and in all Florida public universities, Cambridge qualifications earn advanced college credit. Most importantly, students enjoy learning with Cambridge. Syllabi―which describe what students must learn in order to gain the qualification―are well-structured, engaging and up-todate, motivating students to learn and to apply their knowledge. Syllabi are also flexible. Students may choose the subjects that suit them. Teachers can adapt the content to their local context, making study more relevant and interesting. AICE courses exist for all students, not just the Diploma candidates. If you would like to learn more about the program, you may access the Wellington High School’s AICE website (http://wchsaice.weebly.com) or the University of Cambridge’s CIE website (http://www.cie.org.uk) for more information. For additional questions, please contact Mierka Drucker, the new AICE Coordinator, at [email protected] or call (561) 753-9412. Wellington Debate A dozen members of the Wellington Debate program represented Wolverines Nation at two national championship tournaments this spring. Eight students traveled to Sacramento over Memorial Day Weekend for the National Catholic Forensic League’s “Grand National” championship – the Public Forum Debate team of Sara Casey and Julie Cesta; the PFD team of Brandon Schloss and Chris Slaughter; Eileen Wheelen and Zachary Jacobson in Dramatic Performance; Tinquisha Shaw in Orla Interpretation; and Bennett Aikey in Congressional Debate. The group represented the youngest-ever national championship representation by Wellington, with seven of the eight students (Aikey, Casey, Cesta, Schloss, Shaw, Slaughter, and Wheelen) being sophomores, and the eighth (Jacobson) being a freshman. It was the first of two end-of-year national championship debate tournaments at which the “Year of the Wolverine” was visible in full force. Four debaters represented Wellington and the Florida Oceanfront National Speech & Debate Association District at the 2016 NSDA National Championship in Salt Lake City in June. Senior Victor Sanchez qualified in Congressional Debate, where he competed in the national senate; the Public Forum Debate team of juniors Caramen McDaniel & Connor Yeackley competed at NSDA Nationals for the second consecutive year; and Jacobson competed in the new Informative Speaking category. In addition, coach Paul Gaba was recognized with his Third Diamond award, representing 15 years of coaching success. Wellington High School hosted the 2016 Florida Forensic League Novice State Championship debate tournament in mid-April. More than 650 competitors from across the state (some from as far away as the Panhandle) were in attendance, as were some 250 judges, 50 coaches, and around 50 Wellington Debate and volunteer students. Wellington has great success at the tournament. Freshman Taylor Peterson was fourth in Declamation, and was a semi-finalist in Oral Interpretation, while freshmen Kalena Miles & Sophie Reuther were semifinalists in Duo Interpretation. Wellington Debate took home two Palm Beach Catholic Forensic League Novice Championship Tournament. Jacobson took top honors in Novice Dramatic Performance with his performance of Weird Al Yankovic’s epic “Trapped in the Drive-Thru,” while Matias Galguera & Manuel Hernandez went undefeated (6-0) in Novice Public Forum Debate. In Novice Oral Interpretation, Peterson placed fourth. In the PBCFL’s April Funvitational, McDaniel placed second in Spontaneous Argumentation Debate with a 4-1 record, while Slaughter went 4-1 and took fourth. Mason Graham was seventh, going 3-2. Amaris Fairchild took fifth in Storytelling. In curriculum news, a major change was approved by administration for the 2016-17 school year, as first-year debaters will be enrolling in Debate 3 Honors this fall. This will allow new members of the debate program to earn honors credit for the course. Students interested in enrolling in Debate 3 Honors should contact Coach Gaba ([email protected]) and their guidance counselor for details. In Tune With Wellington’s Needs Athletics Weightlifting News 2016 CHLOE ODOM AND LEEANN HEWITT WIN GIRLS WEIGHTLIFTING STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS On February 6, 2016, Chloe Odom and LeeAnn Hewitt became the first girls to win a State Championship from not only Wellington High School, but also any Palm Beach County high school. Chloe, a senior, won the 139 lb. weight class with a 205 lb. bench press and 175 lb. clean and jerk combining for a winning total of 380 lbs. She bested her closest competitor by 10lbs. LeeAnn, a junior, won the unlimited weight class with a 250 lb. bench press and 230 lb. clean and jerk combining for a winning total of 480 lbs. LeeAnn defeated a tough field of competitors, which included one who broke the state record for bench press and another who broke the record for clean and jerk. Congratulations to both of these hard-working Wolverines athletes. Thank you for all the time and effort you have dedicated to representing the Girls Weightlifting Team and Wellington High School. Wrestling by Coach Gray The Wellington Wrestling Team had another record breaking season this year bringing a school record 9 wrestlers to the FHSAA State Finals. The Wolverines were successful on and off the mat with a team GPA of 3.1 (6th best in Florida) and took home the Conference, District, and County Championships this year. The JV wrestling team also had a great season with a 2nd place finish at the JV County Tournament. Great job Wolverine Wrestlers!! 2015-16 Boys Basketball Team The 2015-2016 Wellington Boys Basketball team entered the season in a welcome but unfamiliar position defending state champions. With a roster that graduated only 2 seniors from the 29-3 state championship team expectations were once again high. The 2015-2016 did not disappoint despite playing a schedule against some of the best teams in Florida and a couple nationally ranked teams as well. The Wolverines finished the season with a 25-5 record making it to the regional finals and losing a heartbreaker in double overtime to eventual state champion Coral Springs High. Despite not reaching the ultimate goal of repeating as State Champs, the season was not without some incredible accomplishments. The Wolverines continued their dominance in district play going undefeated (9-0) for the second straight year, and won their 3rd consecutive district title. There were also signature wins outside of district and conference play. The Wolverines took on class 7A #1 ranked Bartow High school in a home game on December 11th. Behind a dominant first half effort by 6-10” North Carolina signee Tony Bradley, Bartow took a 19 point lead into the halftime locker room. Things looked bleak for the Wolverines, but true to their character, they responded with a championship effort in the second half powered by incredible defense from Sage Chen Young, sharp shooting from Trent Frazier, and great team basketball. The Wolverines forced overtime and won 79-75 in a thrilling home game. In another thrilling victory the Wolverines took on St. Petersburg High, another state ranked team, at the Wally Keller Classic in Fort Meyers. In a back and forth battle where baskets were very difficult to come by the Wolverines scored the most important bucket of the game when Trent Frazier dribbled through defenders up the court as the clock ticked down from 4 seconds. When defenders converged on Frazier towards the basket he quickly dished the ball to Alex Dieudonne who in one motion caught the ball and shot it off the backboard and through the hoop as time expired and the players and coaches rushed the court to celebrate the 63-62 victory. Graduating this year are seniors Ethan Bureau, Nick Brown, Alex Dieudonne, and Lester Gates. Their contributions to the program are numerous and they will certainly be missed. Nick Brown was the 2015-2016 team captain as voted by his teammates and was an All Area selection by the Palm Beach Post. Ethan Bureau was also an All Area Palm Beach Post selection in his time as a Wolverine. Alex Dieudonnne was a 3 time first team All Area selection by the Palm Beach Post and the Farm Bureau Insurance Classic dunk contest champion featuring talent from around the nation. Lester Gates was an All Area selection by the Palm Beach Post and the 14-15 Dhop Tournament MVP. This class can boast a number of accomplishments: 3 time district champions, 3 time conference champions, back to back regional finals appearances, a Regional championship, and State Champions. A glimpse into the future of Wellington basketball looks as bright as ever. With the winning precedent that has been set by Coach Colin, 54-8 over the last 2 years, 70-20 over the last 3 years, and the departing graduating class expectations will be high for 2016-2017. Wellington returns first team All State player and Sun Sentinel and Palm Post Player of the Year Trent Frazier. Frazier, considered by many as the top point guard in Florida, will be joined by returning back court starter Sage Chen Young, and expanded roles are expected from contributors Miguel Peart, Brian Williams, and other returning varsity and JV players. Congratulations to the 2015-2016 Wellington Boys Basketball team for another great season and for representing Wellington High School with class and dignity. Upon arriving there, they were placed in a detention center for a month and a half. During that time, their particular situation was under study. They were granted permission to come to Palm Beach County in Florida because a relative was living here. They made it to Palm Beach County via plane and the young lady enrolled at our school. She didn’t know a word of English when she enrolled at Wellington High. She is now able to speak, read and write some English. Although she has encountered many obstacles, she currently has a 3.33 GPA. She has worked so hard this school year. Mr. Perdomo, who is her mentor, stated, “The success of our ELL students makes my hard work worth it.” Our other ELL mentor, Mr. Mendez, also works with students who are facing academic challenges due to their language barrier. He says, “Personally one of the most effective ways to connect with students, especially ELL students is to listen. With so many issues that they are dealing with, giving them our attention is very important. Sometimes a loving ear has more power to connect than any words can do.” Our ELL students have an effective instructional model in place and all the teachers work as a team in order to ensure the varying needs of our students are met. Mrs. Ponce goes above and beyond to advocate for all of our ELL students. She wears many hats as she registers, coaches, mentors, guides, and helps our students. The ELL student population is lucky to have so many educators working on their side. In turn, we are privileged to see their hard work and actions turn into success! Academy Publishing School Newsletter Program™ • 800-644-3541 Estee Lauder once said, “I never dreamed of success, I worked for it”. As the school year draws to a close, it’s time to celebrate our successes! We have 84 students enrolled in our ESOL program at Wellington High. It is with great pride that I announce 11 out of 18 of our senior students are receiving a high school diploma this school year!! All of our senior students have overcome great obstacles to come to the United States. Moreover, they have all worked extremely hard for their success. Mrs. Jan Stern, their Language Arts teacher hosts an ELL Senior Luncheon for her students on a yearly basis. It’s a great time to celebrate their hard work. Her students get an opportunity to experience an American Meal. While the students enjoy their lunch, there is conversation about college plans. Some of her students are planning to go straight to college, while others will need to work first and save money in order to further their studies. Whatever the individual situation is for each student, Mrs. Stern encourages them and motivates them to obtain a post-secondary education. She is proud of her students and misses them every year. Our seniors are not the only ones working hard for their success. We have a freshman student in our ESOL program that has been self-driven and self-motivated to work hard for her accomplishments. She was born and educated in Guatemala. She only completed half of her 7th grade education in Guatemala. Her parents were divorced and her mom felt she needed to leave their country for their safety. In a moment of desperation, they left behind their friends and family to embark on a long journey that
