2013 Annual Report - Shasta Regional Community Foundation
Investing in our community
2013 Annual Report
Thank you
Dear Friends,
The 2012-2013 year held many significant achievements for the Community Foundation.
Since our inception in 2000, we have many remarkable stories to tell. Lasting relationships
have been formed with our donors and our nonprofit partners. Opportunities for community
enhancement have been seized and we all benefit from the positive results. Critical needs
have been addressed and collectively we feel a sense of strength knowing that together we
can make a difference.
In February of 2013, the Shasta Regional Community Foundation reached a benchmark
of over $20 million in assets. Celebrating this milestone and our 13th Anniversary as a
Community Foundation was a cherished moment for both our current and past Board of
Directors and Staff. We recognize this would not be possible without the generosity and
support of our donors and the expertise and dedication of our Investment Committee.
In the past year, nearly $3 million was entrusted to us through the establishment of 11 new
funds at the Community Foundation. Our mission of promoting philanthropy by connecting
people who care with causes that matter allowed us to connect with donors and provide a
vehicle for them to achieve their charitable goals. The funds currently held at the Community
Foundation total over 100 individual funds with assets of over $21 million. These funds
address interests ranging from Arts to Education, Health to Animal Welfare and Women and
Families to Veterans. It is our role to assist in turning a passion into a permanent legacy.
As we look to the future of the Community Foundation and the needs and opportunities in our
region, we see a critical need for flexible grant making dollars. The Stewardship Fund will allow
us to be both responsive and proactive in the communities of Shasta and Siskiyou counties.
Our Stewardship Campaign efforts will be at the forefront of our activities in the coming years.
Our success in these efforts relies heavily on the support of our past and future donors.
We believe the Foundation is strategically positioned to grow philanthropy in our region. Our
commitment to you is unwavering and we look forward to working together “for good, for ever”.

The Stewardship Endowment Fund at
the Community Foundation is our most
responsive and versatile fund. In 2013 the
Board of Directors and Staff at the Community
Foundation set a goal of increasing this fund
to over $1 million by 2016. This will allow for
discretionary grantmaking on an annual and
ongoing basis.

Good stewards do not act alone. The power
of collective giving is the heart and soul of the
Community Foundation.
Funding for the signs in the Madrone Hospice
Volunteer Garden made possible by a grant from
the Community Arts Endowment. Signs created
by local Siskiyou artist Ralph Starritt.
The Liberty Scroll project was made possible by a grant from the
Shasta Regional Community Foundation, Community Building Arts
Initiative. The Liberty Scroll is a continuous, collaborative painting

Elmer H. Schmidt Christian
Broadcasting Fund (Donor Designated):
Mr. Schmidt lived in rural Adin, California
and enjoyed Christian Radio. He decided his
legacy would be to support Christian Radio
for the benefit of others after his passing.
With the assistance of his financial advisor
Linda Andresen, Mr. Schmidt established a
fund at the Community Foundation to ensure
his assets would achieve his charitable
goals. Since the fund is over $1 million, Ms.
Andresen continues to act as financial advisor
and professionally manage the funds.

Siskiyou Family YMCA
(Organizational Endowment):
This endowment was created with a gift from
Mrs. Leah McConnell with the intent of creating a
perpetual funding source for the Siskiyou Family
YMCA. In 2013, the cumulative grant dollars
paid back to the YMCA since its inception in
2003 reached the total of the initial gift. This is a
shining example of the power of endowment.

Shasta County Student Benefit
Fund (Donor Advised):
The Shasta County Board of
Education established this fund with
the insurance proceeds received as
a result of the damages to Camp
Latieze. The purpose of the fund is to
ensure that the original intent of Camp
Latieze would be permanently secured
for students enrolled in Shasta
