Its architecture shows evident British influence; remain of a time when Menorca was part of the British Empire. Still you can see by the way the ruins of the old English Marine Hospital. When visiting Mahón you shouldn’t miss the port. It is said to be the best port in the world, behind Pearl Harbour. Close by, in Finca de San Antonio, Admiral Nelson and Lady Hamilton lived their famous romance. On the far western end of Menorca lays the city of Ciutadella, the old capital of the island. Its remote origins have left a wide archaeological heritage in the island, in the form of megaliths. The most important prehistoric monuments you can visit are the “taulas”, the “talaiots” and the “navetas”. The beautiful port of the city’s historic quarter, called Es Born, is surrounded by medieval streets filled with palaces, churches and fortresses. 2. Archeological Treasures of Menorca $242 per person* The Serial Property proposed for inclusion in the tentative List of World Heritage of the Spanish State is made up of 25 archaeological sites that are representative of the Talayotic Culture of Minorca (CTMe) and those that best illustrate the Prehistory and Protohistory of the island of Minorca. This island, that forms part of the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands, has an exceptional heritage, reflected in its 1,574 archaeological sites inventoried on its 700m2 of surface area. There are places of very different monumental category that include a wide chronological range that embraces the arrival of man on the island to the Medieval Islamic era. Of these places, 1,401 hold the protection category as Assets of Cultural Interest the maximum juridical protection of heritage legislation in the Spanish state. The selection made brings together the examples that best illustrate Minorcan Talayotic Culture as it is made up of the representation of different building types and the best monumental quality.
