BOOK
READING
HEY, YOU IN THE BLACK T-SHIRT!
An Australian music industry legend, Michael Chugg has been promoting, managing,
courting, bullying and championing rock acts for over 40 years. Hey, You in the Black T-Shirt
is his story…
Michael Chugg was only fifteen years old when he began managing and promoting artists in his hometown
of Launceston, Tasmania. That was in 1962. From the ridiculous to the sublime. From down and dirty rock
‘n roll mayhem to million dollar deals with industry heavyweights. From gossip and desperation to undeniable
truth and outrageous fortune.
‘Chuggy’, as he is affectionately known, is a man who doesn’t mince words and in his book he shares every shocking
detail about what goes on behind closed doors when big international acts come to town.
Hey, You in the Black T-Shirt documents 40 years of music history in Australia. Finally, the vault has opened
up on the antics and the politics of a time when pop culture really was changing the world, a personal
life rocked by the demands of non-stop touring, and a reflection on the heady days of an
exciting and pioneering music industry in Australia.

An Horse
An Horse are Kate Cooper and Damon Cox, a band who are
both base-less and bass-less. This Australian duo (hence
no bass) formed in the dark and dusty basement of the
Brisbane record store they both worked in. Before you
could say, “Sticklers for grammar” An Horse were signed to
Mom+Pop by Sara Quin (Tegan and Sara).
In 2009, An Horse released their debut album Rearrange Beds and spent
the next two years touring the world, performing on the Late Show with
David Letterman and appearing in numerous publications such as Rolling
Stone, Spin, Pitchfork, and even People Magazine. Just to really make things
interesting and (here comes the base-less part) just as the touring began
to let up, Kate moved to Canada and Damon went back to Australia. They
decided to strip things down further by writing this new album from separate
continents, emailing each other demos and sketches of songs. Their sparing
philosophy reached a different plain and Walls was created.

Pop Rock
The broad church of pop is really the only catch-all that
comes close to encompassing the music of local boy made
good Andy Kelly. Calling himself Andy Clockwise, and based
full time in LA where he is packing houses, Clockwise displays
a dazzling maturity on his second album that makes him
sound like a superstar you just haven’t heard yet. Imagine
the vocal love child of David Bowie and Bono singing music
that merges the stadium dynamics of U2 with the dark intensity of Velvet
Underground. And that’s not the half of it. A masterful record with the capacity
to get deep into your bones, just who have we let slip through our fingers?

Singer Songwriter / Americana
Ange Boxall’s new album, Writing Letters, features an
impressive array of talent, including West Coast early Eagles
legend JD Souther, along with Jim Lauderdale, The Wrights,
The Arlenes and Pedal Steel virtuoso BJ Cole. Influenced by
American country and folk sounds, Ange has always drawn
inspiration from the singers she grew up listening to.
Ange was born and raised on the beautiful island of
Tasmania, Australia, however she has been based in London, UK for the past
ten years. She is also a regular visitor to Nashville, Tennessee. It is in both of
these cities that this rich, multi-layered and outstanding new album was born.
Writing about love, relationships and experiences, her album is carefully
crafted with catchy hooks to draw listeners in, before fully snaring them with
the depth of her observational writing.
2011 saw her first appearance at Folk Alliance with an invitation for an official
showcase.

Indie Dance
In their native Australia, Sydney’s ART vs SCIENCE
have crammed the kind of heady ascent experienced
by the luckiest of bands into a timeline that belies
their few short years. From regional clubs to national
festivals, the three-piece have built a massive
following on the basis of two simple abiding principles:
loud dance music played 100% live; and absolute, unrelenting fun.
In doing so they’ve become a live powerhouse; selling out shows, ascending
to festival favourites the nation over, regularly arresting the eyes and ears
of all who witness their peculiar brand of madness. Or as one international
headliner recently squeezed: “How am I supposed to follow that?” This is
dance music for Marshall stacks - heaving/heavy heart music for your hips.
Having achieved Gold sales both their S/T EP and the Magic Fountain EP, Art
vs Science are readying their debut album The Experiment for release in early
2011.

Beni
Blank Realm
Trying to wrap your mind around Beni is like trying to get a
grip on a ghost. He’s an energy flash, a light that never burns
out, a juvenile joker and an ageless oracle. He’s a man that
has lived a thousand lives, a connoisseur and a curator, an
aesthete and the ultimate modern artist.
Beni’s forthcoming debut album was written and recorded
in various studios and bedrooms in Sydney, New York, LA, Paris, Berlin, Tokyo
and Barcelona; at various airports and hotels along the way; on countless
flights; on trains between Hiroshima, Osaka and Kyoto, and in a rickety-ass
farmhouse in the French countryside. The result is Beni’s singular vision of
dance music filtered through life and love, and a soundtrack to a journey with
no end in sight. It’s an attempt to capture the atmosphere of house music’s
infancy in Chicago and New York.
Bristling with dance floor vitality, Beni’s sparkling collection of tracks
showcases the vocals of an ivy league of guests from across the globe: Sam
Sparro, Nomi (Hercules and Love Affair), and Matty Safer are just a few.
The album will be Beni’s first solo release on Modular and follows on from his
previous singles, My Love Sees You and Maximus (Kitsune).

Hard Boogie
Coming from the fertile Brisbane experimental
pop underground, Blank Realm have earned a
reputation for ecstatic live performances and
critically acclaimed, highly sought after, records.
Fusing 60s psych, garage, punk and noise into in a
giddy amalgam, the band have toured extensively.
Their most recent album ‘Deja What?’ on Brisbane label Bedroom Suck (also
home to Brisbane buzz acts like Kitchen’s Floor and Slug Guts) was distributed
internationally and earned glowing reviews, with the single ‘Full Moon Door’
being awarded number 8 on the Mess and Noise Songs of the Year Poll. Also
in 2010, the group’s debut longplayer ‘Heatless Ark’ was released on Los
Angeles label Not Not Fun and showcased the more experimental side of the
band. Forming in 2005 the band forged a name for themselves through more
than 20 tapes and CDR releases on underground labels and performances
in unconventional spaces throughout Brisbane. Since then the group has
coalesced into a rock band format and toured extensively and gaining a loyal
following throughout Australia.

Bliss N Eso
Bliss N Eso primarily built their fan base from their compelling
and energetic live performances. In 2004, they recorded
their first full length album, Flowers in the Pavement. A
virtual brainstorm on record, the emerging artists compiled
track after track of wild expression through vibrant lyrics and
production.
In late 2006, Bliss N Eso’s ‘Day of the Dog’, was released
and became the first Australian hip-hop release to debut in
ARIA’s top 50 with sales exceeding all benchmarks for a local hip-hop release.
It also earned Bliss N Eso an ARIA nomination for Best Urban Release.
2008 saw the release of Bliss N Eso’s third LP, Flying Colours. The album
became the highest selling local hip-hop album of the year and Bliss N Eso
took out the ARIA Award for 2008’s Best Urban Release.
In 2009, the group released the Flying Colours Live deluxe edition and
undertook one final national tour for the album which became the highest
selling local hip-hop tour of all time.
The fourth studio album, Running on Air debuted at #1 on the ARIA Album
Chart, ending Eminem’s six week run in the top spot. Before long the trio had
their first platinum album in Running on Air.

Boy & Bear
www.myspace.com/boyandbearmusic
Indie Folk Rock
To say the past year has been a whirlwind for
Boy & Bear would not only be a cliché, but
also an understatement. Since the bands
dulcet tones first hypnotised listeners across
Australian radio waves in September 2009 Boy
& Bear have found themselves in the spotlight. Their single ‘Mexican Mavis’
had the industry whispering and music fans clambering. Rumors of their live
show quickly spread and Boy & Bear soon found themselves touring with the
royalty of folk rock Mumford & Sons and Laura Marling throughout Australia.
Boy & Bear impressed, so much so that Laura Marling invited the band to tour
with her through the UK (April 2010). Their live show takes the band to another
plane, evidenced by their critically-praised, sold-out tours of Australia (Sept/
Oct 2010) and the UK (December 2010). The songs presented on debut EP
“With Emperor Antarctica” pack a bigger punch when taken to the live forum.
The honesty in each member’s voice is heightened, the emotion makes
chests swell and the story in each song resonates somewhere between the
heart and stomach. Boy & Bear is good for you.
www.cloudcontrolmusic.com
Indie Rock
For a band that started on a whim, entering the local
University band comp was a turn of fate for Blue
Mountains rock ‘n rollers Cloud Control. Their self titled
EP saw them pick up a bunch of local accolades, including
Sydney’s FBi Radio SMAC award for Best Newcomer and
the opportunity to tour with Vampire Weekend and Supergrass, amongst
others.
In May 2010 the band released their debut album Bliss Release (Ivy League).
The album has won Best Independent Record at the Australian Independent
Music Awards, 3 ARIA award nominations, 2 SMAC Awards and a J Award
nomination for Triple J album of the year. Cloud Control’s hit single ‘Nothing In
The Water We Can’t Fight’ was voted 18th in the Triple J Hottest 100.
After completing a successful run of shows in the UK supporting The Temper
Trap and Local Natives, Cloud Control returned to Australia to play festivals
including Meredith Music Festival, Falls Festival, Peats Ridge and The Laneway
Festival. Upon signing to Infectious Records (UK/Europe) the band will be
relocating to London to tour Bliss Release which is due out in May 2011.

Dan Brodie & the Grieving Widows
Darren Hanlon After a couple of years couch surfing, house sitting and soul
searching across the world, Gympie’s own Darren Hanlon
has emerged with his fourth studio album, I Will Love You
At All. Written in a variety of exotic locations from Paris to
Coonabarabran, it seems travel has made Darren’s heart
grow wistful, and the result is an album of gentle longing and
reminiscence.
Dan Brodie’s debut EP, “I’m Floatin Mamma” (1998), was
independently released followed by his debut album,
“Big Black Guitar” (1999) under the moniker, Dan Brodie
and the Broken Arrows which featured his brother Chris
Brodie on lap steel guitar.
Signed to EMI, the album was rereleased in 2001 to much fanfare. Brodie was
snapped up by French label, Last Call Records and dashed off to Europe to
play shows in the U.K. and Paris. On his return to Australia, Brodie recorded
with U.S. producer John Wooler (Willie Nelson) and engineer Oz Fritz (Tom
Waits) and released an EP, Make Me Wanna Kill. From these same sessions
came the alt country masterpiece, “Empty Arms, Broken Hearts” which
garnered Brodie two ARIA Award nominations.
2011 finds our hero back with a brand new outfit called Dan Brodie and the
Grieving Widows, featuring Dave Nicholls on drums and Chris Brodie on the
bass. Hailed as a dirty blues-noir outfit, the Grieving Widows play out Brodie’s
cautionary tales with a swaggering bluesiness and a rock n roll heart, recently
capturing this sound at Headgap Studios in Melbourne with engineer Brent
Punshon. Dan Brodie and the Grieving Widows are set to unleash their brand
new record, “My friend the Murder” later this year.

Darren’s trademark wit and wordplay, which feature prominently on his
breakthrough album Fingertips and Mountaintops, are ever present on I Will
Love You At All. I Will Love You At All was recorded at Type Foundry in Portland,
Oregon by Adam Selzer (M Ward, She & Him, The Decemberists). Featuring
Rachel Blumberg (Bright Eyes, M Ward, She & Him, The Decemberists) on
drums – along with three additional drummers – the record also features long
time collaborator Cory Gray on keys. Reinforcing the album’s sweet nature are
the twin female vocals of Shelley Short and Alia Farah.
Now in his tenth year as a solo artist, Darren calls this his ‘mature’ album.
That’s one way of putting it. Whichever way you look at it, I Will Love You At All
is indeed further ripening of this uniquely revealing songwriter.

Dash & Will (the names Charlie Thorpe and Josie
DeSousa-Reay would have been called had they
been born boys) first started butting heads in a
Melbourne classroom in Grade Four. They sang
together, played guitar together, argued together
and finally, formed a duet together.
At sixteen they received a government grant to record some of their early
collaborations, which won over acclaimed producer Barry Palmer (ex-Hunters
and Collectors guitarist and writer) who quickly snapped them up. Soon after
the girls signed to Mercury records and they began work on their debut album,
going from school to studio.
Refusing to bow down to any traditional pop styling, the pair’s major label debut
single, “Pick You Up”, heralded an exciting new Australian act on the rise. Upon
its release, Up In Something peaked at number four on the ARIA Heatseekers
chart. The record’s success followed up with international support slots for
the Tings Tings, the Kooks, and the Futureheads.
Dash & Will thrilled punters on festival line-ups including Homebake,
Southbound, and Falls. In March 2010 Dash & Will headed off to the U.S to
begin work on their new album and have since been furiously writing and
recording their soon-to-be-released follow up album.

Pop Rock
Emerging from Perth, WA, Dom Mariani is a rock and roll
stylist. With a serious interest and love of underground 60’s
garage rock, classic pop, power pop, soul and R&B, Dom
would form one of Australia’s most loved and respected
bands of the mid to late 80’s The Stems.
Collaborating in a string of projects throughout the years –
including The Someloves & DM3 - we arrive at his latest project The Majestic
Kelp. The project came to life with the release of the album Underwater
Casino in June 2003. With a nod to influences such as The Ventures, the
Shadows, Link Wray, Ennio Morricone and Ultra Lounge Sounds Dom takes a
left turn from the Pop World.
The Stems reformed in 2003 for a series of reunion tours and the release
of Heads Up. In 2008 the toured, playing to enthusiastic audiences in the
US (including SXSW), United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Scandinavia. October
2009 would see The Stems play farewell shows across Australia. Their last
ever shows were played in Spain, Italy and Greece in May 2010. The end of
the Stems sees Dom return and involvement in other projects including The
Domnicks, his collaboration with former Clash member Nick Sheppard. Dom
has just released a new solo album on Liberation Music entitled Rewind & Play
and is set to tour nationally and internationally.

The band’s live shows in 2009 saw the band undertaking
several support tours and gaining a spot on V Festival.
This was followed by slots at the Brisbane Valley Fiesta and Sounds of Spring
Festival. The band closed 2009 with their third studio release, The Sky is
Falling, which enjoyed national airplay with singles, ‘Cables in the Sky’ and ‘Bus

Last year Drawn from Bees released their debut album, Fear Not the
Footsteps of the Departed, to critical acclaim, including four star reviews in
The Australian and Rolling Stone Magazine. The band set their sights on the

Indie/Thrash/Punk
DZ Deathrays consists of Shane Parsons and Simon
Ridley. While it may be hard for some to comprehend
a mere two piece with the ability to create a massive
wall of sound, this is a feat which DZ have been able to
conquer with results fashioned from a statically charged
mix of influences like Death From Above 1979, The
Bronx, Justice, Sunn 0)) and Lightning Bolt.
Since the beginning of 2009, DZ have had two releases; an EP called ‘DZ
Ruined My Life’ and their latest single ‘Gebbie Street’, released by the band
independently as a free download.
After a recent three week tour of New York, DZ Deathrays are certainly no
stranger to the touring circuit in Australia. They have toured with acts such as
RATATAT (US), The View (SC), Yacht Club DJ’s, Midnight Juggernaughts, The
Grates, Die!Die!Die! (NZ), The Temper Trap and the biggest tour to date, the
nation-wide support of Crystal Castles.
They’ve played many festivals across the country; Big Day Out, Park Life, Field
Day, Sunset Sounds, Play Ground Weekender. In September 2009 DZ won the
Triple J Unearthed award and were shortlisted for two separate competitions
for Tooheys Extra Dry. They also featured in Rip It Up Magazine’s Fresh 50.

Grand Atlantic
www.grandatlantic.org
Rock/powerpop/indie
The new album is sheer psychedelic sophistication, its
beating heart now urgent and undeniable. Yet the band is
content to let the music build and peak, unhurriedly and
with tangible conviction. Intimate and inscrutable, these
songs bend and fold, stretch out and explode. Guitarpop mutates into a lush psycho-geographical map where
the band’s headspace mimics the manic contours of the equally beautiful
and punishing New Zealand countryside where the album was recorded.
In March 2010, Grand Atlantic barnstormed across the US and Canada
after invitations to showcase at SXSW and Canadian Music Week, following
extensive touring of the album in Australia and a growing call from the US
powerpop scene. The release of How We Survive in the US prompted radio
play on over 50 radio stations, a glut of media attention and placed them on a
bunch of SXSW ‘bands to watch’ short lists.
Even the massive exposure of their “Gossip Girl” track hasn’t changed their
focus or approach to music. “We’re really proud of what we’ve done on record
to date, but we also wanted to keep evolving and growing as a band,” says
Usher.
March 2011 sees Grand Atlantic return to the US for a repeat bout on both the
East and West coasts, as well as SXSW again. Make them a priority to catch
on this tour. Live, they’re an unstoppable hurricane of passion and intensity, a
high-energy rock tour-de-force…

Experimental Rock
Injured Ninja are an avant-garde experimental
rock group that formed in Perth, Western Australia
in 2007. Its members are Steven Aaron Hughes,
Dominic Pearce, Jake Steele and Matthew Bairstow.
In 2008, INJURED NINJA performed a mixture
of improvised and rehearsed gigs in art galleries
and small performance spaces throughout Perth, releasing their debut EP
‘Circuitboard’ in October. The band became notorious for their intense
and unpredictable performances. Touring Japan in early 2009, they later
performed their first East Coast tour of Australia in December that year.
In January 2010 the band released a 12” split single with Perth act French
Rockets, named ‘IDDQD’ which won the WAMi (West Australian Music
Industry) Award for ‘Most Popular Single’.
Their debut album ‘Injured Ninja vs. Skylazer’ was recorded in Perth in late
2010 with engineer Kieran Kenderessy. It combines intense walls of guitar
drone, with dance / break-beat and dub / reggae influences and captures the
many facets of the INJURED NINJA live sound. The album will be packaged
with a comic outlining the story of ‘vs. Skylazer’.
First single from the debut LP, ‘Golden Top Mountain Journey’ was released as
a 7” single in October 2010 to highly positive reviews across Australia and has
received nationwide airplay.

Jack Carty www.jackcarty.com.au
Singer/ Songwriter/ Folk
Jack Carty is a rare find; an inspired artist possessing
a way with words and melody, Jack was sculpted by a
unique upbringing and a natural flair and dedication
for his craft. After spending his formative years tucked
away in the secluded Bellinger Valley, Jack moved to
Sydney, releasing the ‘Wine & Consequence’ E.P to
widespread critical acclaim around Australia, resulting in the record spending
two weeks in the iTunes singer/songwriter Top 10 chart.
Extensive touring throughout Australia and the USA ensued, along with the
award for singer-songwriter of the year at MusicOz 2010. Jack collaborated
with Grammy Award winning songwriter Dan Wilson and New York based indie
producer extraordinaire Kramer Shimmy on his debut album; the result is ‘One
Thousand Origami Birds.’ A cohesive and timeless effort based around tales
of travel, struggle, hope, simplicity and love. It is at once intensely personal and
universal. Including the simple wandering of the albums opening title track, the
optimistic alt country swagger of ‘Valentina’, the hyper-drama of duet ‘Grey
Sky’ and the quiet prayer of the first single ‘Hope’ - this is a record as confident
as it is pensive, as optimistic as it is melancholy and as honest as it gets.

Rock
Juke Kartel In little more than four years, the five-member band
has gone from local larrikins to fast-rising stars –
opening for Nickelback and sharing the stage with
Slash, Ozzy Osbourne, Fergie and Ronnie Wood.
This summer they open the Australian leg of Slash’s world tour and, later
this fall, will introduce their own brand of hard-driving rock to stages across
America. Levolution (Carved Records) represents Juke Kartel’s debut album
in the U.S., to be released on September 28, prefaced by its first U.S. single,
“If Only.” Produced by Brian Virtue (Jane’s Addiction, Velvet Revolver, 30
Seconds to Mars, Chevelle) and Rick Parashar (Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, 3
Doors Down, Nickelback), the album features a half-dozen freshly penned
tracks and six from the band’s 2009 Australian CD, Nowhere Left to Hide,
remixed by Dan Korneff (My Chemical Romance, Cavo). With its overarching
theme of personal growth and “the journey we’re all on,” says vocalist/lyricist
Toby Rand, Levolution finds musical parity in its strong hooks, multi-textured
instrumentals and passionate vocals.
Their stage presence, rife with cheeky banter and a mischievous streak that
can be attributed to their Aussie heritage, is bolstered by mutual admiration
and respect, having worked together for the better part of a decade. “We’re
more than just band mates. We’re a family that chose each other,” explains
Rand, who says that, musically and personally, Juke Kartel has never been
tighter as a unit. “We’ve all gone through our individual challenges, and now is
the perfect time for all this to be happening.”

Blues/Roots
Twenty year old guitarist, surfer and singer-songwriter Kim
Churchill picked up the guitar at the age of four, then trained
classically for ten years. At 16, he started to find his own
musical feet under the influences of Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin,
Pink Floyd, Bowie, Marley and more recently Jack White.
There’s no doubt this guy can play guitar, but his music also
pays tribute to the great songwriters that have influenced
him. Kim hit the road in a campervan straight after finishing high school two
years ago and hasn’t had a fixed address for more than a week since. He’s now
considered to be one of Australia’s most exciting young guitarists.
From starting out in 2009 virtually unknown, Kim has now blown apart some
of Australia’s biggest festivals (Byron Bluesfest, Woodford Folk Festival, Port
Fairy Folk Festival, Queenscliff Music Festival and many more),as well as taking
his show to Japan, Canada and the USA. He’s appeared on national primetime
TV, he won National Youth Folk Artist of the Year 2009, and now with agents in
each corner of the globe, he is booked for a host of international shows in 2011,
including SxSW, plus tours of England, Japan and Canada.

Lenka Just before Lenka steps on stage she makes a promise:
“I want to write more songs about being in love. On
album two you’ll hear more of those.” It was 2008, her
self-titled debut album had yet to drop and there was
a lot yet to come, including a move to America, live
appearances on Conan O’Brien, and the celebratory
moment when her album hit No. 3 on Billboard’s
Heatseekers chart.
This year she makes good on her word and returns with Two, an album full
of love songs. But, as you’ll hear, not all of Two’s songs were all spun from
lazy, romantic mornings. That’s because, thanks to the success of her debut,
Lenka spent most of 2009 touring the world. She played intimate clubs and
festivals like Bumbershoot and Summer Sonic. Traveling to 21 countries in ten
months was eye-opening
That inner strength guided her in the decision to travel to London to record a
portion of Two with David Kosten (Bat for Lashes). She also had the courage to
take her album in a different direction than her last, one that is more distinctly
electronic. No matter what the subject, the songs reveal a braver Lenka, even
more ready to take on the world.

Little Red www.littleredmusic.com
Indie Pop
Steeped in classic R&B, garage and rock’n’roll, but
possessed of a thoroughly modern spark, Little Red
makes the kind of music that challenges you not to
sing along and dance. Theirs is the sound of a band in
love with all those things that made us listen to records
and go to shows in the first place: melody, urgency, the
totally unselfconscious desire to let music transport and wash over you.
Little Red came together in Melbourne five years ago, when five very different
musicians—Adrian Beltrame (guitar/vocals), Dominic Byrne (vocals/guitar),
Quang Dinh (bass/vocals), Taka Honda (drums) and Tom Hartney (vocals,
percussion)—came together, united by a love for infectious hooks, taut
rhythms and indelible melodies. Working with producer Scott Horscroft
(The Temper Trap, The Presets, Silverchair), the band recorded Midnight
Remember in the Autumn of last year, a follow up to their much lauded Listen
To Little Red. From the sly disco underpinnings of ‘Rock It’ - which has gone
Platinum in Australia and just scored Triple J Hottest 100’s #2 spot - to the
winsome rock build of ‘Slow Motion’, and the heart-breakingly sparse ‘All Mine’,
Midnight Remember shows Little Red totally unafraid to take their pure,
irrepressible pop to new horizons.

At just 19 years old, Matt Corby’s talent is one that stretches
far beyond his age. Matt’s angelically haunting voice has
proven capable of captivating entire audiences wherever
he performs. Matt’s musical journey has been a unique one;
having developed a love for Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley as
a young boy, Matt quit school aged 13 to go on tour with a musical group for
two years before infamously finding himself in the final of a TV talent contest
aged 16 years old. He continued to follow a path less travelled and turned
down numerous major label record deals to focus on developing his craft and
sound.
Matt spent the UK summer of 2010 recording his new EP ‘Transition to Colour’
with indie label and production team Communion. Matt has been welcomed
in to the ‘Communion family’ seeing him support Mumford & Sons in Australia
as well as Communion artists Marcus Foster and Foy Vance in UK. ‘Transition

haunting and ethereal collection of songs that display a remarkable maturity
for a young man of 19 years.

Many might be a little baffled by who, or what Miami
Horror actually are – A band? DJ? Production wizard?
Well, the answer is actually all of the above. Miami
Horror, originally the brainchild of 22-year-old Benjamin
Plant and now a newly formed live band have earned
their stance as one of the most talked-about Australian
producers/artists and ones to watch in 2011.
After putting himself on the map by DJ-ing various high profile international
events in LA, NY, Mexico and Europe as well as remixing artists like The Presets
and Pnau with Fred Falke, Benjamin joined forces with Josh Moriarty (vocals
and guitar), Dan Whitechurch (bass, keys and sampler) and Aaron Shanahan
(drums) to create both the live show and collaborate on his debut album.
Miami Horror as a live entity have quickly made a name for themselves, racking
up performances at festivals such as Good Vibrations, Parklife, Groovin
The Moo, Falls Festival, Field Day and Big Day Out tour as well as supporting
international acts such as Friendly Fires & Lily Allen.

While seemingly new to the music scene, Nashville, TNbased singer/songwriter Nikki Kummerow has spent the
last few years laying the ground work in her native land
of Queensland, Australia. Building a strong following at
home garnered the attention of Aaron Marsh, frontman
of the indie-darling rock band Copeland.
Marsh extended an invitation to come to the states
where they worked on crafting Nikki’s soon-to-be-released debut album (due
out April 19, 2011). Soon after tracking the album, she decided to make her stay
in the US a permanent one.

Operator Please facebook.com/operatorplease
Pop Rock
The Queensland-based band defy all expectations
on their second album, Gloves, with the youthful
enthusiasm and teenage angst that gave them
worldwide recognition making way for a more
sophisticated and developed sound.
Gloves had its inception towards the end of 2008,
when the ARIA Award-winning five-piece returned home after an exhausting
18 months spent touring the globe to promote their debut album, Yes Yes
Vindictive. Buoyed by the success of it – and in particular the infectious
hit single “Just A Song About Ping Pong” – the band travelled throughout
Australia, Europe and Japan, with a series of gigs that included performances
at Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds Festival and Splendour In The Grass, as well
as support slots for bands such as Kaiser Chiefs and Arctic Monkeys.
Sonically, Gloves sees Operator Please strike out in a different – and somewhat
unexpected – musical direction. Influenced by ’80s era Eurythmics, Prince
and Janet Jackson, the album fuses elements of synth pop, funk and hip-hop
with Amandah’s distinctive vocal and the band’s unique instrumentation.

Following his debut single “Back On The Drums” in 2007 which topped

Satellite Sky www.satelliteskymusic.com
Indie Rock
Satellite Sky is the musical vision of siblings Pete
Kicks (vocals/guitar) & Kim Kicks (drums). It sees
an exploration of their rock n roll influences with a
grandiose flavor akin to artists such as The Verve and
Bowie, while drawing on raw elements of The Who and
Supergrass.
Working with producer Paul Lani (U2, Prince, Bowie, Rod Stewart), Satellite Sky
has created an emotive soundscape that is both dynamic and ambient. The
recording process was a cathartic experience, with Pete reveling in the task of
playing every instrument bar the drums.
Last year saw the Australians tour throughout the U.S, working in L.A and
New York with industry experts and local musicians. The pair gained a strong
foothold in the music licensing business, with placements in major motion
pictures and television, including forthcoming music documentary ‘Rockin
The Wall’.
Prior to forming Satellite Sky, the siblings toured consistently throughout the
globe. This included performances at SxSW, Canadian Music Week, Popkomm
and exclusive showcases in Los Angeles (Key Club), New York (Arlene’s
Grocery), London (Borderline) and Berlin (Wild at Heart). Their music has also
received significant radio support at both national and international levels,
including KROQ (USA), X-FM (UK), and Triple J (Aus).

The Amity Affliction
myspace.com/theamityaffliction
Punk/Hardcore
In a day and age where few heavy bands of any
substance cross over to a greater audience, The Amity
Affliction are using their voices to deliver a message as
powerful as their music.
While many bands can claim to have large a fanbase,
it’s rare to find a group with a following as incredibly dedicated as The Amity
Affliction. Their fans travel the country, get lyrics and band art tattooed, and
make their love for the band known as often as they can (the band and their
records constantly top Media polls). It’s why they sell out shows across the
country to deafening roars and why they are constantly one of the top bands
on all social media networks. Most recently, their new album “Youngbloods”
debuted at #6 on the Album Charts in Australia – surprising in the entire
industry and proving that a real fanbase wins over media hype and radio play.
So what is it that has made people lose their mind over a heavy band that
originated 6 years ago in a small town in Queensland, Australia? A mixture of
hard work, a dedication to connecting with fans and a message that is every bit
as powerful as their music.

The Boat People
myspace.com/theboatpeople
Alternative Pop
With three critically acclaimed albums The Boat
People have gradually gathered together a chorus of
emphatic praise from around the world. Long time
supporter KCRW’s Nic Harcourt called them “My
favourite Aussie band” and invited them to play a
live set on Morning Becomes Eclectic. Jason Bentley
invited them to be part of the KCRW 2008 SXSW showcase.
Recent single “Under The Ocean” was included in US iTunes compilation “Indie
Spotlight Alternative - Best Of 2010” together with Arcade Fire, Yeasayer,
Beach House, Deerhunter, Two Door Cinema Club, and fellow Australians
Tame Impala. They return to the US for SXSW 2011 and a string of side shows
supporting their latest album ‘Dear Darkly’.
The album ranges through inky-soul and triffids-inspired surf guitar, fey garage
rock, absurdist lyrics, programmed beats and the odd bedroom recording
of a nervous breakdown. A full-spectrum, stream of consciousness and
pop montage that takes in flashes of wry optimism and romance, as well
as moments of loss and quiet despair. With reviews throwing such wildly
disparate comparisons as Elliot Smith, The Decemberists, and the Go
Betweens around, it is perhaps more accurate to say The Boat People have “a
sound that is entirely their own” (Inpress).

Cambodian Rock
A multicultural band of Khmer-rock revivalists comprised
of native Cambodians, French and Australian ex-pats.
The characteristic fuzz and jangle of psychedelic
’60s-’70s rock ‘n’ roll takes an otherworldly spin courtesy
of the vocal stylings of Srey Thy whose rich tones ring
alternately with haunting melancholy and sassy grit.
At age 18, while working as a maid in Phnom Pehn, vocalist Srey Thy was
kidnapped and narrowly escaped a sex-trafficking ring. She’s currently using
her newfound fame to raise awareness about human trafficking in Cambodia.
Their new release is the first single from a Cambodian band since 1975 when
many of the country’s popular musicians perished at the hands of the Khmer

The Chevelles www.thechevelles.com
Garage Rock
It was the summer of 1989-90. The twin peaks of
revivalist 60’s psychedelic and post punk garage
rock and roll had collided in Australia. Out of the
West Australian surf crawled four long haired
boys determined to make their own special guitar
noise and The Chevelles were born. Featuring members of The Stems, The
Kryptonics and The Freuds, the band has showcased a wave of blistering
guitars, soaring harmonies and head shaking tunes through their 20 year
history with over 20 releases including 5 full length albums and 4 “best of”
compilations.
The Chevelles have played over 1000 live shows in their career. In 2008 they
broke the all time bar and attendance records at their showcase at famed
SxSW venue JB Reillys, Austin Texas and backed it up with another SXSW
showcase in 2010 and an 8 city blitz over the USA. In 2011, their 21st Anniversary
Year, The Chevelles grab their boards and guitars and fire up their full blown
350 Chevy again and do what they do best…play sweaty rock and roll all over
the world. The 21st Anniversary World tour started in January at the Australian
Festival “Southbound” and the year ahead will see the band extensively tour
Australia, the US, Europe and Brazil.

The Holidays
www.theholidaysband.com
Indie
Formed in 2007, Sydney foursome The Holidays’ quickly
made their mark on the Australian musical landscape. The
release of two EP’s at opposite ends of 2008 saw them
scoring Triple J rotation, share stages with The View, Jamie
T and The Temper Trap, and are regularly name-checked
as one of the nation’s most promising new acts.
Their debut album, Post Paradise, may have been a long time coming, but it
has categorically been worth the wait. The Holidays commenced writing the
album early last year and a metamorphosis of sorts gradually began to take
place. They found themselves drawn away from the simplicity of their earlier
indie guitar manifestation – new and varied influences were absorbed and
they found both the groove and layers of a song equally as rewarding as the
glistening pop hooks that had come naturally from their formative days.
Moonlight Hours hit # 1 on Triple J’s playlist earlier this year, while remixes
by Jonathon Boulet and The Swiss have also attracted generous lashings of
hyperbole in the blogosphere. The latter appeared on a recent NME download
Mixtape compiled by UK disco/electro wunder-kid Grum. Most recent single
Golden Sky, due for an imminent UK 7” release by the Passport Label (Cloud

The Jefferson are a four piece melodic pop/rock
band based in Sydney, Australia. While Jared King

The Jezabels
Few bands have made more of the past 12 months
than Sydney quartet The Jezabels. Since releasing
their second EP, She’s So Hard, in November 2009,
the four-piece have toured the country supporting
Tegan & Sara, Katie Noonan and Josh Pyke, and as headliners in their own right
(selling out shows nationally in the process).
The third and final release in a trilogy of EPs that began with 2009’s The Man
Is Dead, its five songs represent the band’s most confident outing to date –
moody, mysterious and epic, yet buzzing with the quartet’s ever-present
knack for an irresistible pop hook. For the first time in The Jezabels’ career,
they allowed the music to grow and evolve in the studio. “We had to put a lot
of faith in ourselves working together,” says Shannon.
An October’10 tour of America and Canada was followed by a headlining trek
across Australia, culminating with appearances on festivals such as Wave
Rock Weekender, Peats Ridge and the Falls Festivals. It’s a long way from The
Jezabels’ humble beginnings in a Sydney University band competition in 2007.

The Level Spirits
myspace.com./thelevelspirits
Rock n Roll
Formed just over a year ago as a band to play a one
off party for a friend, the chemistry was immediate
and profound. Before going in to record their debut
THE LEVEL SPIRITS racked up over 40 shows in
Melbourne and Sydney. Their resulting album
feels and sounds like a band who know how to play
together.
Mining the sounds of the 50’s and 60’s and melding it into a rock and roll “mix
tape” of the member’s favourite sounds, they have been steadily building a
solid following in their hometown of Melbourne. The band comprises indie
rock veterans and relative “new comers”. Guitarist Julian Matthews played in
legendary Australian band “The Stems”. Mark Mansour played with Melbourne
psychobilly legends “KingPin 440”. Singer Molly Jean Morrison has been
running a Burlesque troupe around Australia and drummer Robert Urban
has played around Melbourne doing session work and in a number of touring
bands.
The album is pure rootsy rock and roll bliss, mixed by Australian Rock royalty
Wayne Connolly and Rob Younger of Radio Birdman fame. It shows a maturity
and swing most bands take years to perfect. Sometimes dark, sometimes fun
THE LEVEL SPIRITS may just be your next favourite band.

With a sound reminiscent of the latter period of The
Velvet Underground, and a live show that captures all
the energy, soul and charisma of The Stooges, Perth
band The Novocaines are well and truly buzzing in all
the right circles.
Front man Corey Marriott shifts effortlessly between sullen introspection and
extreme energetic release. Brother/guitarist Jay Marriott merges Cream era
Clapton with grunge guitar sounds to create his own unique style. Bass player
Steven Turnock switches between flat-picking grooves, and the fuzzed-out
manic lead playing of Noel Redding. Eighteen year old Liam Young’s frenetic
drumming has grabbed the attention of live music reviewers across the
country.
Unearthed by Triple J after releasing their track “Cup Of Coffee” through
Ampersonic Music/MGM, The Novocaines went on to tour with Australian
bands including The Fumes, Yves Klein Blue, You Am I & Philadelphia Grand

The Snowdroppers www.snowdroppers.com
Guitar Blues / Rock
The term SNOWDROPPER has dual meanings;
it’s a 1920’s slang term for cocaine addicts,
but also a turn of phrase referring to deeply
disturbed individuals who have a penchant for
stealing woman’s panties off clotheslines.
As a band The Snowdroppers have a foot in both camps, but they also
delight in delivering boozed up, toe tapping, foot stomping blues rock, all with
a thrillingly ‘tip your hat’ homage to nostalgia. The Snowdroppers’ one true
calling in life is to introduce and convert heathen nonbelievers (especially the
young, the old, the fragile and the interned) into a new generation of obsessed
blues drenched rock n’ roll acolytes. These four clean-limbed honkeys, Johnny
Wishbone (Vocals, Banjo & Harmonica), Pauly K (Guitar), London (Bass) and
Cougar Jones (Drums) are in reality dirty boys eager to mix things up a little.
Fusing their love of the old time blues and country masters with their more
contemporary influences, The Snowdroppers are hell-bent on promoting
promiscuity and will deliver that message courtesy of their ribald songs of
fornication and intoxication. Combining a healthy cocktail of sex, death, blues
and religion has made The Snowdroppers ready and able to live up to their
ever expanding reputation.

The Vaudeville Smash www.thevaudevillesmash.com
Nouveau Yacht Rock
The Vaudeville Smash began with 3 brothers, an
intense love of good music and a desire to the give
the kids something they’d never seen or heard.
Nuevo Yacht Rock, melodies and harmonies, hooks
and feet tapping beats – it’s song writing steeped in
the traditions of the great masters but with a fresh
and thoroughly unique approach.
Based in Melbourne, the band released their debut EP to a full house at The
East Brunswick Club in March this year. Since then, the band has been touring
the country relentlessly.
With their uncanny knack of transforming a dance floor with their infectious
energy, they’ve been leaving audiences stunned and have built a legion of diehard-dancing-fans. They are currently recording their first full-length album,
due out early 2011, and their song “Hey” was featured as Rage’s ‘Indie clip of
the Week’ and has enjoyed extensive radio play, including a stint on Triple J,
PBS, RRR and FBi. The band have also been invited to play at the Apollo Bay
music festival in April 2011.
FUN FACT: The band’s name has Italian origins – The Vaudeville Smash was
the 1980s Italian children’s karaoke machine that started the brothers music
careers.

Lo-Fi Pop/Indie
Wagons
Forming late 2008 around charismatic guitarist/
vocalist Marty Frawley, The Twerps have quickly
risen to become one of Australia’s favourite lo-fi pop
bands.
From unassuming beginnings, the band’s irresistible
pop charm has seen them share stages with many of their international
musical heroes, supporting the likes of Deerhunter (USA), the Bats (New
Zealand), Yo La Tengo (USA), PK 14 (China) and the Oh Sees (USA). They’ve
played the prestigious Melbourne International Arts Festival, the 2010 Boogie
Festival and New Zealand’s Camp A Low Hum festival in 2009.
Their debut EP, released on Chapter Music in late 2009, featured nine short,
simple but incredibly infectious tracks, recorded by Eddy Current Suppression
Ring guitarist Mikey Young. These tracks were also released by US label Night
People. On the basis of these releases, the Twerps have received a wealth of
positive attention from around the world, including being called “The best new
band in Australia” by iconic UK magazine Uncut.
The Twerps have two singles emerging in early 2011 on US labels Olde English
Spelling Bee and Underwater Peoples. They are also just putting the finishing
touches to their debut album, to be released in Australia by Chapter Music in
mid 2011.

Americana / Country / Rock
Wagons offer an unlikely mix of stompin’ grand
rock, border-crossing dark country, irresistible
crooning and classic pop. Their live show treads a
line between a Vegas 70s showroom extravaganza
and a bunch of fresh-faced undertakers letting
loose at a rained sodden rock festival.
Their latest album, The Rise and Fall of Goodtown, the band’s fourth, has seen
them win best group and best album in the 2009 Age EG Awards along with a
string of other accolades. Henry Wagons was also recently named as one of
the ‘Top 100 Most Influential Melbournians’ by The Age Melbourne Magazine.
Having spent the last few years supporting and touring with the likes of Justin
Townes Earle, The Violent Femmes, Calexico, Bill Callahan, Will Oldham,
Okkervil River, John Hiatt and Jolie Holland, it is safe to say that Wagons are
road-hardened, formidable live band.

Pop
Megan Washington grew up in Papua New Guinea before
moving to Brisbane with her family at age 14. From a very
early age Megan was inspired by MGM musicals and Rufus
Wainwright.
Megan Washington won 2010 ARIA Awards for “Best
Female Artist” and “Best Breakthrough Artist” for her top
5, platinum selling debut album “I Believe You Liar”. The album was recorded
with her friend and bandmate John Castle in his shed in Melbourne.
One of Australia’s greatest songwriters, Paul Kelly, said this : “I was asked to
write a song for a play and talked about the idea to Megan. A week later she
sent me a tune and some words that knocked me sideways. When I’d picked
myself up I suggested some edits and added a few more words. Then she sang
the song into a tape recorder at my place. The play people were very happy.
And I was amazed. The music just pours out of her. I hope we write some more
songs together. All I need to do is bring the jug and make the tea.”
And her mum said this: “Megan’s record is very good, and we’re very proud
of her”.

Sludge Metal
For the past seven years Whitehorse has gathered
together members of Melbourne’s underground
music community to create crushingly heavy, sludgemetal layered with electronics. Drafting members
from the punk, grindcore, experimental, and noise
scenes, Whitehorse often garner comparisons to the likes of Corrupted and
Khanate.
Having toured Japan, the USA and Australia, plus releasing 6 audio documents
on Australian, Belgian, German and US labels (Sweatlung / Sabbatical /
Conspiracy / Blind Date / 20 Buck Spin), Whitehorse hit their most productive
point in 2010, performing in support of several international visitors to
Australia including Birushanah, Zeni Geva, Om, Lichens, Wolves In The Throne
Room, Monarch and Coffins.
The troupe is presently recording new material for a new full-length album
plus split records with The Body (Providence, RI) and Extortion (Australia), all
due for release in early 2011. Whitehorse’s prolific members have performed
in acts including: Grey Daturas, Occult Blood, Collapsed Toilet Vietnam, Ivens,
731, Black Jesus, Breathing Shrine, Fallout, Pisschrist, Encirlcing Sea, and many
more.

Rock
Wolf & Cub It’s been over three years since Australian quartet Wolf
& Cub broke cover with their debut album Vessels. The
album was released around the world and the band found
itself touring Japan, Europe, the UK, and the States, as well
as appearing with On The Radio, The Killers, Queens of
the Stone Age, Wolfmother, and Primal Scream.
Once their uproarious lives settled down a bit, the guys of Wolf & Cub headed
back Down Under to get started on some new material. New influences, new
gear, and new ideas necessitated a new approach.
A major part of this new approach was the band’s decision to work with fellow
Australian producer Chris Colonna (aka Bumblebeez), someone guaranteed
to challenge the band in intense new ways. Science & Sorcery is a continuation
in the ever-evolving sound of Wolf & Cub. Main songwriter Joel Byrne captures
the whole experience when he says;
“This album was made amidst a sea of conflict; conflict within the band,
between the band and Chris, within myself… This album is really about trying
to move forward in life and overcoming those tactics you unconsciously put
in place to sabotage it. It’s about fear of change”.

Young Magic is the newest addition to the Carpark family.
Hailing from the east coast of Australia, Young Magic is Isaac,
a portable studio, and friends. These songs were recorded
over the last six months in various places around the world:
old spy bases near Berlin, empty rooms in Iceland, kids’
playgrounds in Melbourne, and no water flats in New York.
These various locales are sampled and integrated into
the fabric of Young Magic’s sound: the fluidity and songwriting of late 60’s
psychedelic soul combined with modern beat making.
