Summer 2007 - Humane Society Calumet Area
Summer 2007 Giving shelter animals a voice Humane Society Calumet Area 421 45th Street Munster, IN 46321 www.hscalumet.org (219) 922-3811 Celebrating Over 65 Years of Community Service Making a Difference - One Life at a Time Director’s Note “Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.” - Anatole France Dear Friends of the Humane Society, Summer is upon us and as we welcome the warm weather, I would like to take the opportunity to welcome the staff into the spotlight. Often the staff gets lost in the day to day shuffle and grind at the shelter. They work behind the scenes to make the magic happen. I think it is important to recognize the employees when you see them walking through the hallways and understand a little better what they do here. I’d like to take the time to introduce a few of them. Currently, we have approximately thirty employees at the Humane Society Calumet Area. Although they all aren’t listed here, they are all equally important. Rebecca Bennett has been an employee here for 7 years. She began working as a lab technician at the old shelter on Columbia Avenue in 2000 and became the Shelter Manager 2 years ago. Her dream for the Humane Society is to see us open a spay/neuter clinic. She has seen the HSCA grow and change tremendously in the time that she has been here. Dina Stipes just celebrated her one year anniversary with us as a receptionist and continues to do a great job. Dina also cares for the cats at PetSmart in Lansing before coming here to greet visitors, accept applications, and answer all phone calls. Gary Tiemens multi-tasks at the HSCA. Anything that needs to be done, Gary can do it! He works in the kennel, is trained in the lab, and performs many of the day-to-day maintenance tasks around the building. In November, Gary will celebrate his fifth anniversary of employment at the Humane Society Calumet Area. Congratulations, Gary. Jacklyn Goralczyk began working in the kennel six months ago and has since been trained as a lab technician. She is doing a great job and we all enjoy having her at the HSCA. Jacqueline has 5 ferrets, 2 dogs and 1 cat at home. Josh Medina literally works behind the scenes. (It’s actually quite a miracle that we have a picture of him.) Josh is responsible for all of the print production, newsletters and appeal letters. He also maintains and designs the website. Josh has been here for 3 years and began working in the kennel. He has moved his way through the ranks since then. He does an amazing job! Jessica Ruiz, Kennel Attendant, joined us in January of this year. Jessica is currently in school to become a vet tech and has been volunteering her time in the lab. She has a snake, iguana, chinchilla, rabbit, parrot, black lab and cat at home. Thank you Jessica! Lori Sliger works very hard as the Adoption Counselor. She averages ten adoptions per day and has been sending home a record number of animals per month. In May nearly 200 animals found loving homes! Lori checks each and every application, schedules all of the appointments to go home and meets with each adopter. Since the first day I came here as a volunteer, I knew this was a special place. The staff and volunteers have always done a great job at fulfilling every part of making dreams a reality. The animals know that they are wonderful people and count on them everyday! They truly make a difference. With Gratitude, Rachel M. Hall Executive Director 2 - Humane Society Calumet Area In This Issue “You think dogs will not be in heaven? Mega-Millionaire Money It’s almost that time again! We would like to thank everyone that helped collect MegaMillionaire money for the HSCA last year, and ask that you help us again this year. We were so close to getting another vehicle for animal transports, but just didn’t make quite enough. With your effort and time, we will be able to pull it off this year! “All of the animals except for man know that the principle business of life is to enjoy it.” - Samuel Butler Recent Events Where Best Friends Meet One of our largest fundraisers became even bigger this year! Thanks to help from the many businesses that donated items for our silent auction and sponsored the event, we were able to raise over $20,000 for the shelter animals. The evening began with a welcome message from Rachel Hall, Executive Director, followed by a lovely dinner. Once the bidding began and the dance floor was open, all the fun started! Congratulations to all those that won auction and raffle items. A special thanks goes out to Judith Ballanco of Munster, IN. She won the money tree raffle and donated it back to the HSCA. She is not only a very generous person, but an excellent volunteer. Thank you Judie! On behalf of the animals, we would like to thank everyone that came out and showed their support. See you next year! Harley Davidson Adoption Event Petsmart - Spring Adoption Event A special thank you goes out to the staff over at Calumet Harley Davidson for allowing us to hold an adoption event at their facility during their annual Spring Open House. The event was a ton of fun and a big success! Now 19 animals have new homes! The annual Spring adoption event at PetSmart in Lansing, IL turned out to be a success again this year, as over 70 animals found homes. Thanks goes out to the staff over at PetSmart. We would also like to thank PetSmart Charities for allowing us to do this event again! Easter Bake Sale Microchip Madness Our annual Easter Bake Sale, along with photos with the Easter Bunny took place on April 6th and 7th this year. With your help, we were able to raise over $1,100 for the animals! We would like to thank everyone that put their time and effort in to creating such delicious baked goods for this event. If you missed this event, it may be too early to start thinking about winter, but make sure you don’t miss our holiday bazaar on December 15th! Thanks to a grant from Banfield Charitable Trust, the HSCA was able to offer 1,000 free microchips to the public on March 29th through April 1st. By allowing us to do this, 1,000 more animals in the Calumet area now have a better chance of finding their way home should they ever get lost. We would like to send a very BIG THANK YOU to Banfield Charitable Trust and everyone that came out for the free microchips! Thank you for making this event such a success! www.hscalumet.org - 5 Success Stories “The purity of a person’s heart can be quickly measured by how they regard animals” - Anonymous Hi All, Got a follow up call from you folks today to see how Sandy (Blanche) is doing. Well, she is doing great! She’s gained about 6 pounds and perked up considerably. Yesterday she jogged about three miles next to me on the bike and was still rarin’ to go! She is so smart - I really don’t think there’s anything she can’t learn once we’ve blown off her full head of steam. She heels, sits, downs, sits up pretty, speaks on command, and is totally housebroken. Her “big brother” Creed, who we adopted 5 years ago, now weighs in at 150 lbs, but although she is less than 1/3 his size she rules the roost over him, but in a nice way. Her higher energy level has encouraged him to get a bit more exercise and he made the full track at Wicker Park last weekend for the first time in a long time. We couldn’t love either of them more! Especially for a dog that spent at least five months of her life kenneled, she is an amazing dog. I can’t tell enough people how great rescued dogs can be and how rewarding it is to be a part of their lives and watch them bloom. Pictured with the “Hula Dogs” in this photo is my granddaughter Erica, who is only 6 years old. Hey… Just a short note to let you know how one of your former shelter dogs are doing. You called her Kathy, we now call her Holly. Holly is a very smart dog - She sits, lays, shakes paws, and comes when called. She has learned to fetch a Ball in just two days! Holly is a bright start to my days… If you see me you will see Holly! She loves to play with my grandkids, who are only 3 and 4 years old. She is not the shy little dog she used to be anymore. Holly will greet you with head high and tail wagging anytime she meets someone. Thank you for the BEST pet in the world! Susan L. Cruse Thanks for all you do, Paula Lancaster Thanks for everything you do, Shar Miller Hello Friends! We adopted Crayola about a month ago. She is making herself right at home. Some days she keeps to herself but others she is quite curious about what is going on. Here is one of her most recent photos… Dear HSCA, We adopted Ginger a.k.a. Jersey from you back in July `06. I’ve sent you a few pictures in the past, but this is one of the most recent ones. She’s a LOT bigger now than she was when we fist got her and she’s doing great! This is a picture of her just enjoying another lazy dog day afternoon. Don Krivach Just sending a quick note to say “Hi.” Hello… I would have written sooner but, my mommy and I have been very busy. My mommy takes me shopping and she bought me a “Pink Princess Bed” that I love! I am very happy in my new home… Me and my mommy go walking every night – you know us girls have to keep our figures from all the special treats we get. All my neighbors think I’m just the cutest thing ever and of course I know I am. I went to the Beauty Shop the other day and got a trim, I was just too hot. Now I feel so much better. I miss my family when they are at work, but I am so happy when they come home! They are really spoiling me, but I deserve it because I am such a good girl and give them so much joy. Well… I must get back to being pampered! We adopted Sophie (Bloodhound) on October 6th, 2006. We already had a 9 month old bloodhound, Rufus, and were just moving into our new house. Sophie is doing great and has gained almost 15 pounds since we adopted her (just before we adopted her she had gotten pneumonia). Sophie and Rufus play together all the time and she loves to watch out the front window. In fact, she would sit on the couch looking out the window for hours if you’d let her. We take both of them on at least four 30 minute walks a day, regardless of the weather. They both love kids and love walking around the neighborhood. Love, Talula THANKS FOR SENDING ME TO SUCH A NICE HOME Thank you! Candace Massoth My Friends at the HSCA, It’s been 2 ½ years since I was a resident in your shelter and I thought I would let you know how I’m doing. When I was 4 years old, my previous owners decided they didn’t want me anymore. I also had a boyfriend and because I wasn’t spayed and he wasn’t neutered, we had six puppies. They brought all eight of us to the shelter. Why did they do that? My boyfriend was healthy and soon got adopted. I miss him. However, I had heartworm and also, my milk for my puppies had dried up and they weren’t doing too well either. The wonderful people that you have working there took care of my puppies and they all got healthy and were all adopted. I was so glad! A lady that volunteers there took me home as a foster child to make me better. I’m sorry to say I also had a lot of aggression issues and didn’t trust people or animals. This lady taught me that, if people took the time and loved me, that I could love and trust them back. After I got better, she realized that she loved me too much to bring me back so she adopted me! Soon after, she brought home a baby brother for me, who was rescued from Jasper County, so I could learn how to share and get along with other animals. Well, it worked. I love my mom and my brother, who is 2 yrs. Old now. My mom had a dog before us that she loved with all her heart and she passed away. She now realizes that no dog will ever replace another because we all have different personalities. My mom still volunteers there because over 300 animals that are in there everyday can use her help and aren’t as lucky as me and my brother. I want to thank all the people that volunteer and, especially, work there, for giving all my dog and cat friends somewhere to live until a new mom or dad comes to adopt them. Even if, for some reason, they can’t own an animal and want to help animals, many people come in and volunteer their time, even when they’re very busy. Thank you HSCA for being there and giving me a second chance! Rockie ADOPTED April 28th, 2007 Adoption Procedures While in the Shelter, PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH ANY OF THE ANIMALS! We want to eliminate the possibility of disease spreading from animal to animal. After you find an animal you like, please return to the front desk and give the receptionist the name, cage number, or description of the animal you are interested in. The receptionist will then get a kennel aide to take the animal out for you to play with and see if it is “the one”. After deciding on an animal, an application must be filled out. We have a one (1) to three (3) business day approval period. If approved, we will call you and set up a pickup time for you to come in and take your new pet home. Here are a few of the HSCA’s long term residents that recently found homes... Gus ADOPTED May 15th, 2007 Bear ADOPTED March 24th, 2007 Bruce ADOPTED May 18th, 2007 www.hscalumet.org - 7 Kid Power “You can say any foolish thing to a dog, and the dog will give you a look that says, ‘My God, you’re right! I never would’ve thought of that!’” - Dave Barry The HSCA would like to thank all of the “Kids With Kind Hearts” that have donated, held their own fundraisers, or have volunteered their time to better the lives of the animals in our care. With such limited space, it is impossible to recognize every school, group, or kid that has made donations, but here are a few that really stood out! Lake Street Elementary School Student Council Ran a “Caps for a Cause” fundraiser and collected nearly $300 for the HSCA K-Kids Group from Warren Elementary Held a bake sale and collected over $500 for the HSCA Great job kids! The Eagle Team at Griffith Middle School Collected over $530 for the animals here at the HSCA! Girl Scout Troop #5416 out of Staten Island, NY Makes “Happy Sock” toys for cats at the shelter every year as a service project... All the way from New York! Wilbur Wright Middle School Service Club Donated cash and miscellaneous supplies Southridge Elementary Student Council and K-Kids Group Donated cash and miscellaneous supplies Critter Camp Our second annual critter camp is right around the corner! All kids ages 8 to 12 are welcome to sign up. Camp will run in two seperate sessions, with the first beginning July 9th and the second beginning August 13th. Our day camps are aimed at providing a fun, safe, hands-on environment where children can learn about various aspects of animal care, career opportunities in animal welfare, and build a sense of respect and responsibility for animals and life. For more details, give us a call! 8 - Humane Society Calumet Area Ways to Help “An animal’s eyes have the power to speak a great language.” - Martin Buber Benevolent Bowling Stardust II in Merrillville, IN currently offers bowling for only $1.25 per game when a $2 donation is made each Monday. All donations are split between the Humane Society Calumet Area and the Lake Area United Way each month. Through this program, we have raised anywhere from $500 - $800 every month since its inception. We would like to thank the staff at Stardust II for their generosity and for coming up with such a great program. If you like to bowl, be sure to visit Stardust II at: 3925 E Lincoln Highway Merrillville, IN 46410 Recycling Program If you have seen the big green and yellow bins sitting out in front of the HSCA, you might have asked yourself why we have them. Well, the answer is simple, not only do you help the environment by recycling your paper in them, but you also help support the HSCA at the same time. For quite a while we have been raising nearly $100 a month, just from people bringing their used paper! Unfortunately though, the numbers have been slipping the past few months. What used to be more than $90 a month has slipped to barely $70 a month. With your support, we know that we can reach our goal and break more than $100 each month! On behalf of all the animals here, and the environment, we ask that you do your part and recycle rather than trash. Kuranda Beds Shop for Good We have chosen Kuranda dog beds for our shelter not only because they are so comfortable for our dogs, but they also fit perfectly in their cages. Unfortunately, we still don’t have nearly enough for all of our kennels. If you would like to donate a bed so that another dog can sleep in the proper comfort they deserve, please visit our website at www.hscalumet.org/kuranda. Beds come in a variety of sizes, but we have preselected the ones that will best fit our kennels. For more information on Kuranda beds, including info on how to order them for your own pets, visit www.Kuranda.com. Do you love to shop? Do you like to help support homeless animals here at the HSCA? If you answered YES to both of these questions, we have a solution for you! If you shop at www.giveline.com and www.igive.com, they will donate a portion of each purchase made to our shelter. The best part is, you can shop at many of the same stores you already do... Best Buy, Target, Circuit City, and many more! For more information, visit these sites today! Tag Days What if the HSCA earned a penny every time you searched the Internet? Well, now we can! GoodSearch.com is a new search engine that donates half its revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate. You use it just as you would any search engine, and it’s powered by Yahoo!, so you get great results. Just go to www.goodsearch.com and be sure to enter the Humane Society Calumet Area as the charity you want to support. Just 500 people searching four times a day can raise about $7300 in a year! Be sure to spread the word! One of our largest sources of donations throughout the year are our tag day events. Each time we do these events we need the support of every volunteer we have! Although our June tag days are over, the August dates are right around the corner. If you can dedicate a few hours of your weekend to collecting donations for the HSCA, be sure to call Kathleen today at 219-922-3811 ext 24. We broke all records during our April tag days and made over $20,000! Unfortunately we fell down to $16,000 when we did our June tag days. With your help, we can not only meet our previous record during the next tag days, we can surpass it! www.hscalumet.org - 9 Special Thanks “The measure of a life, after all, is not its duration, but its donation.” - Corrie Ten Boom The animals and staff of the HSCA would like to send a very big THANK YOU to: •Andrea Long and the staff at Lansing Petsmart for donating coupons for a free grooming during our adoption event for all animals that found new homes •Bob & Jack’s Pizza for donating a portion of their profits from all food sold at our adoption event and Paws in the Park •Pepsi for donating banners and cases of water for our Paws in the Park event •Mark Lewandowski of Dyer, IN for donating new color shelter info cards to distribute our address, phone number, hours, etc. to the public •Laura Jaros of Whiting, IN for holding a garage sale at Whiting’s Garage-Mahal and donating a percentage of her profits to the HSCA...
