From the Board. . .
The Greater Madison Chamber of
Commerce staff recently received the
Governor’s Great Service Award for
Outstanding Customer Service. 2016
represents the seventh year your Chamber
staff has been recognized with this
designation. Our executive director, Rosie
Jamison and office manager Jennifer DeKam
carried much of the work load in 2015 and
2016. Recently, we hired Daniella Manthey
to assist on a part-time basis. We as a board
feel very fortunate to have this existing staff
working for you as Chamber members. If you
have a little time over the summer, do stop in
and meet the staff. They are very dedicated
to help promote our members, the community
and economic development in the Greater
Madison Area.
I would like to take a little time just to
provide you with some information on what
the Chamber staff does, so you or your
business can become engaged in our
community.
Recently your Chamber staff put together
an outstanding 2016 Madison Area Guide.
You as a member are listed in this guide. This
gives the opportunity not only for the
community, but visitors to view the area
business for their services. This guide is
handed out at appreciation events throughout
the year and the guide is placed @ 12 visitor
centers throughout the State. This annual
promotional piece takes a considerable
amount of time to put together. I viewed it
recently; and it is a quality guide. If you have
not had an opportunity to view the 2016
Madison Area Guide, I would highly
encourage you to take the time to view its
contents.
Members, do you take the time to view
your GMACC Weekly Update provided by the
staff? If you have provided the staff with your
email address, you will receive the weekly
update. I find it to be an excellent way to stay
in tune with what is happening in the
community. Carve out some time during the
week to view this weekly update. You will be
surprised on all the activities that are going
on in this community.
Do you take the time to view our web site?
A new and improved version is currently being
developed. www.chamberofmadisonsd.com?
Once again, your Chamber is putting together
a quality web site. Make sure you place it as
one of your favorites, so you can directly
assess @ your convenience. Please view this
website and click on “The Chamber “to view
the benefits received. This web site not only
links you to the community, but the world!
How can we keep a vibrate Chamber and
community? Have you considered being part of
one of our committees? I encourage you as
members to get involved. Our committees are
as follows: Agriculture Committee, Community
Promotions Committee, Diplomats Committee,
Education Committee, Governmental Affairs
Committee, Leadership Committee and
Recreation & Tournament Committee. To find
out more about the committees just visit our
staff or go to the web site.
If you prefer information through social
media, you can follow on Facebook @ Greater
Madison Area Chamber of Commerce.
There any many ways you can get engaged
as a member of the
Greater Madison Area
Chamber of Commerce, I
hope you take the time
and
“Discover
the
Unexpected”!

June was full of Chamber and member
events that have been very successful and
promoted our business, membership and
opportunities for members and the community.
Thank you to all members, committees and
volunteers who have contributed funds, time,
talents and donations to promote these events
and your Chamber. We congratulate member
and regional attraction, Historic Prairie Village
on their 50th Anniversary of bringing history
to life for everyone to better understand our
rural heritage at their location just west of
Madison.
Congratulations to the board,
volunteers and staff on your recent celebration
of this milestone over Railroad Days.
Promotion of the greater Madison area
businesses and attractions is vital to our
growth and community pride. Each member,
business, governmental official and resident
are valued partners in this as you live, invest
and play here. Pride, support and participation
helps each of us to be an informed promoter as
experiences are shared with others. Be
involved, take part to experience local
opportunities and you will be sure to “discover”
even more! Just as Chamber members can
further promote our area by supporting and
doing business with one another. This has a
tremendous ripple effect to our economy,
growth and future opportunities in which we
all benefit.
Congratulations and welcome to new

Visit the Village All Summer for Fun and Events
Submitted by Faron Wahl, Manager of
Historic Prairie Village
We all say it.... time flies when you’re
busy. But wow – with so many visitors,
events, and campers thus far, great things
have been part of Prairie Village already
this summer!
We have focused all year on our 50th
anniversary, and with the peak
commemorative event in our rear-view
mirror, we still have much to celebrate
this season. It is humbling to take
yourself back over 50 years and truly
consider the incalculable hours of
planning,
sweat,
worry,
and
uncertainty that have literally added
up to Prairie Village 2016. It’s staggering
to contemplate. And it gives us much to
be thankful for.
We’d love to have folks join us for a
couple of great concert events coming up.
On July 30 we’ll feature two concerts –
7:00 and 9:00 – with Nashville recording
artist Doug Allen Nash and RFD-TV star
Penney Gilley. These talented folks will
bring a fun mix of music to the Lawrence
Welk Opera House. A week later on
August 6, we’ll be presenting the big band
2015 Car Show at Prairie Village
sounds of the Gale Pifer Orchestra, with
shows also at 7:00 and 9:00. Tickets are
available by calling us at 256-3644.
Nash/Gilley ticket prices are $20.00
general admission and $25.00 reserved.
Gale Pifer tickets are $15.00 general
admission and $20.00 reserved.
Now at 23 years running, the Madison
Car Show will be back August 7 on the
Prairie Village grounds from 11:00 – 4:00.
With eleven classes offered, awards will be
given for the top three places in each as
well as a people’s choice award.
Pre-registration cost is $10.00, or
registration the day of the show will be
$15.00, both of which include two
admission passes. General admission
price is $6.00 for adults and $2.00 for ages
6-12 (plus season passes are honored).
Pre-registrations can be mailed to Prairie
Village at PO Box 256, Madison, SD,
57042. Gates open at 8:30 that day, and
on-site registration will take place at the
library on the Village’s main street.
Do come out and spend some time
with us that day – what a classic
summer event!
We continue to seek funds for the
complete renovation of our 1890’s steam
carousel, scheduled to head to Ohio for
the winter and return next year in fully
restored condition. There are no other
remaining steam carousels of this type in
operation anywhere, and ours has very
limited life remaining without this
critical restoration project. Visit our
carousel this summer, and see firsthand
this gem we are entrusted with right
here in Lake County. You can donate
here at the Village, or contact us at 2563644.
As always, keep up with us at
prairievillage.org or on Facebook at
Historic Prairie Village.
We look
forward to having you join us for more
great summer happenings at the Village!

Leadership Madison…Growing

Submitted by Mandy Parpart – Leadership
Madison Committee & Student Activities
Director Dakota State University
Developing
leadership
skills
and
involvement in the Greater Madison area for
over 10 years, the Leadership Madison
program has graduated 289 participants
since its inception. While the mission of this
program hasn’t changed, the content
continues to evolve.
Throughout the program, participants are
taken on a powerful journey of self-discovery.
They explore several leadership styles and
practices by listening to presentations and
touring
numerous
local
businesses.
Participants learn from various local leaders
and hear from elected officials about the value
of public service. A trip to Pierre for
Madison/DSU Host the Legislature is one of
the great activities that the participants get
to partake in. This trip gives them a chance to
tour the capital building, sit in on general
sessions, hear from the governor, and speak
with state and local officials.
The group project provides an outlet for
participants to contribute their ideas and
talents to the community. Past graduates
have devoted many hours to this portion of
the program. Our 2015-16 cohort’s projects
were: “Paws for a Cause”, creating awareness
and organizing a fundraiser for Almost Home;
“Spread the Love”, collecting donations to
give Valentine’s Day gifts to residents at the
various nursing homes and assisting with the
Backpack Program; “What You Don’t See”,
“We would like to welcome the following NEW members
to the Chamber”

Pizza Ranch celebrating
20 years in Madison 1996-2016
Partial information submitted by co-owner Beth Bernard
A familiar sight on the popular intersection of US HWY 81, SD
HWY 34 & SD HWY 19 By-Pass is the black with gold accented Pizza
Ranch sign. It welcomes travelers, is a source of community
information from their digital message of happenings and holds the
promise of: great pizza, chicken and salad bar, plus more awaits
everyone who visits over the past twenty years. Once you stop in, you
will come back; due to consistent friendly customer service, good food
and the inviting atmosphere experienced while there.
Since June of 1996 Tom and Beth Bernard have owned and
operated the Madison Pizza Ranch and strives to make it a great place
for families, friends, teams and groups to meet and eat. They also do
that time, Terrilee Gilbert was added as a partner to the team in order
to handle the extra responsibilities of two locations. Today, Gilbert
is general manager and had been employed since 1998. In addition,
Marisa Nussbaum was promoted to dayside manager. Nussbaum has
become a vital part of the Pizza Ranch management team and is a
testament for longevity and that Pizza Ranch offers opportunity for
first time employees to start their work experience since she started at
age 16.
The Bernard’s believe Madison is a great place to raise a family,
own a business and be involved. They enjoy the many community and
school opportunities and also appreciate the additional activities that
Dakota State University offers. They give back in many ways through
their time and support to the community. Tom and Beth have
received the Community Impact Award, Booster Member of
the Year, Greater Madison Area Chamber of Commerce
Distinguished Service Award and GMACC Education
Committee Friend of Education Award. They have also
benefited local non-profit organizations through their
Community Impact Fundraiser Nights on Monday and
Wednesdays.
If asked “What is your most popular pizza?” The answer is
“Pepperoni”. And their busiest time? Bernard’s response is
“There are several events that create busy days for us like
Trojan Days, graduation, athletics, and move in days at
Dakota State University. However, the busiest days are
Pizza Ranch at the Intersection of HWY 34 and 81
it with many dedicated employees “to give every guest a legendary
experience”. This is their mission statement and also is the foundation
of their business – from their curb appeal and tasty selections, and to
their clean and inviting buffet and eating areas plus, attentive staff.
Their story began in May of 1996 when they moved their family to
Madison to open the Pizza Ranch. The Madison location was selected
by the Bernard’s because of their family. Many of their relatives live
in southeast SD and the community was appealing for them to raise
their children and where they could become active. At that time, the
building had housed Hardees and was converted to the new Pizza
Ranch. The Bernard’s received some training from the Brandon, SD
Pizza Ranch who also helped convert the building into a Pizza Ranch.
After the brief month between moving and setting up a franchise,
Madison Pizza Ranch opened the doors in June of 1996 transforming
this high traffic corner and adding another eating establishment.
After just one year the Bernard’s were recognized by Pizza Ranch
as 1997 Franchisee of the Year. They found the business needed an
additional option for customers so in 1998, a game room was added to
the southeast corner of the building. They continued to grow, increase
their options and increase their investment in Madison. At the same
time, they continued their active involvement in the community. In
2012, they squared off the east side of the building increasing their
eating area and remodeled the outside as it is today.
In 2009 they expanded to also own the Dell Rapids Pizza Ranch. At

during Prairie Village Steam Threshing Jamboree.” Their business is
greatly impacted by area attractions and events; therefore, they also
enjoy being involved in the community and believe in doing their part
to support where you live. This is represented by the many
committees they serve and recognitions received.
When asked what to expect in the future, the response from
Bernard’s was: “Pizza Ranch has been through many changes over the
years with the best yet to come.”
