Nutmeg Residency Programs
The Nutmeg Summer International Program celebrated
its 45th season in 2014. Using the same approach as our

involved intensely in training as well as participate in quality
performance opportunities. Nutmeg’s Summer Program builds

Residency Training Program Academics
Sharon E. Dante, Executive Director,
founded the Nutmeg Ballet in 1969 and
has developed one of the most respected
pre-professional classical dance training
and performance programs in the United
States. The Nutmeg, now under the
artistic leadership of Victoria Mazzarelli,
has attracted students from numerous
states and foreign countries. Nutmeg’s
professional faculty members are
dedicated to the success of our students.
Young dancers have special qualities that are nurtured by the Artistic Faculty, Housing Directors and
Administrative Staff. Regular meetings are held to address any residential, educational or training
concerns of the young dancers. Nutmeg strives to develop the whole person as well as the artist,
instilling self-confidence, team spirit and care for detail in each trainee.

The Nutmeg Ballet is the performing unit of the
Conservatory and it maintains a full year-round and
summer performance schedule, offering rich opportunities
to our students. Nutmeg’s robust performance schedule
includes The Nutmeg Ballet performances at the Warner
Theatre, The Bushnell, as well as in our state-of-the-art facility,
designed specifically to transform the classroom environment
into an intimate performance venue. This vital performance
experience helps our dancers learn repertoire, costuming, stage
etiquette, and how to engage an audience -- all skills which
prove invaluable to our students’ future career possibilities.
Nutmeg performances have
been reviewed and acclaimed
by publications such as
The New York Times, Dance
Magazine, Pointe Magazine,
Network TV News Stations,
and other media. We are
especially proud of having
performed for His Excellency,
Pope Benedict XVI, at Yankee
Stadium in New York City in 2008. In addition, in the Summers of
2009, 2010 and 2012, The Nutmeg Ballet performed at Jacob’s Pillow’s
Inside/Out Series. Every July session culminates in a performance at
the Carole and Ray Neag Performing Arts Center at the Warner Theatre
where The Nutmeg Ballet is the resident ballet company.

Nutmeg maintains a daily academic schedule for grades 8
– 12 using curriculum provided by Keystone National High
School (www.keystonehighschool.com) and supervised by
our Director of Academics. The mission of the academic
program is to provide
each student the
flexibility to pursue
professional-level
dance training while
simultaneously
nurturing intellectual
skills needed to excel
in the professional
dance world or in
another career choice.
Residency Training Program Dormitory Life
Nutmeg knows the importance of a positive living environment in the development of the overall
student, and dormitory life plays an important role in this. Upon making a visit, you will sample daily
life at Nutmeg with a tour and private meeting with the Housing Director who works to keep the home
aspect of Nutmeg life healthy and happy.
Our students build lifelong friendships while living and training at Nutmeg. Non-dance related activities
such as country hay rides, school dances, pumpkin carving and holiday giving projects build lasting
bonds. Students reside in either the Nutmeg dorm or our historic home in the heart of Torrington’s
downtown cultural district. In our dorm, a live-in Housing Director resides on the same floor as the
students; Resident Advisors are also present within all Nutmeg living facilities. High-tech security
systems are in place throughout our campus. In the main building, Nutmeg maintains a modern card/
code access full security system. Housing in our historic home is sometimes offered to older, post high
school students offering the opportunity to take on the transitional responsibilities of young adults.
Our food program is served in the dorms/house for breakfast and lunch and at the St. Francis School
Cafeteria for dinner. (In the summer, all three meals are provided at the St. Francis Cafeteria.) Colorful
and spacious rooms, wireless Internet, study rooms, a private library and kitchenettes are available for
our students’ use.
Students are expected to keep a clean and welcoming living environment. This responsibility shapes
essential life skills and habits. Nutmeg facility personnel perform a weekly assessment that ensures
that the students’ quarters are maintained at their optimum. Students and staff work together to
provide a living environment that is safe, clean, and inviting for everyone.
