Summer at the Nutmeg 2015
Nutmeg Residency Programs
The Nutmeg Summer International Program celebrated its 45th season
in 2014. Using the same approach as our year-round professional
training program, our summer workshops train serious-minded students
who wish to be involved intensely in
training as well as participate in quality
Summer Program
performance opportunities. Nutmeg’s
Sample Schedule
Summer Program builds dance skills and

memories for your child with like-minded

and highly motivated students who are

all pursuing their dream, while providing
10:15 - 10:30
constant individual attention to nurture a student’s personal growth.
Break
Each year brings a new Nutmeg experience of warm summer days of classical
10:30 - 12:00
ballet technique, pointe/men’s work, contemporary and classical repertoire,
Pointe/Men’s Work/
and modern choreographic workshops. Nutmeg places strong emphasis on
Theory/Partnering/
our male dance training program and offers female and male dancers of all
Modern Technique
levels the opportunity to attend regular partnering sessions, which was a

mainstay in the summer curriculum. Dancers in each of our training courses
1:00 - 3:00
have the opportunity to practice and improve partnering, both in a class
Technique/Theory
setting and in repertoire.
3:00 - 3:30
Our summer programs often see repeat attendees seeking not only support
Break
in pursuing a professional career, but also to reestablish relationships with
3:30 - 5:00
fellow students. Lasting friendships are nurtured at our R&R events, field
Repertoire
trips and Torrington’s weekly European Market Place along Main Street
5:30 - 6:30
directly in front of the Nutmeg building complex. There, students have the
Dinner
opportunity to shop and enjoy the ambience in one of New England’s most
6:45 - 8:15
historic downtowns.

The Nutmeg campus is located in the heart of Torrington’s Downtown

Residency Training Program Academics
Sharon E. Dante, Executive Director,
founded the Nutmeg Ballet in 1969 and
has developed one of the most respected
pre-professional classical dance training
and performance programs in the United
States. The Nutmeg, now under the
artistic leadership of Victoria Mazzarelli,
has attracted students from numerous
states and foreign countries. Nutmeg’s
professional faculty members are
dedicated to the success of our students.
Young dancers have special qualities that are nurtured by the Artistic Faculty, Housing Directors and
Administrative Staff. Regular meetings are held to address any residential, educational or training
concerns of the young dancers. Nutmeg strives to develop the whole person as well as the artist,
instilling self-confidence, team spirit and care for detail in each trainee.
Performance History
The Nutmeg Ballet is
the performing unit
of the Conservatory
and it maintains a
full year-round and
summer performance
schedule, offering rich
opportunities to our
students.
Nutmeg’s
robust performance
schedule
includes
The Nutmeg Ballet
performances at the
Warner Theatre, The Bushnell, as well as in our state-of-theart facility, designed specifically to transform the classroom
environment into an intimate performance venue. This vital
performance experience helps our dancers learn repertoire,
costuming, stage etiquette, and how to engage an audience
-- all skills which prove invaluable to our students’ future career
possibilities. Nutmeg performances have been reviewed
and acclaimed by publications such as The New York Times,
Dance Magazine, Pointe
Magazine, Network TV News
Stations, and other media.
We are especially proud of
having performed for His
Excellency, Pope Benedict
XVI, at Yankee Stadium in
New York City in 2008. In
addition, in the Summers
of 2009, 2010 and 2012, The
Nutmeg Ballet performed at
Jacob’s Pillow’s Inside/Out
Series and at the Carole and
Ray Neag Performing Arts
Center at the Warner Theatre
where The Nutmeg Ballet is
the resident ballet company.

Residency Training Program Dormitory Life
Gallery Photos by Don Perdue
Nutmeg knows the importance of a positive living environment in the development of the overall student,
and dormitory life plays an important role in this. Upon making a visit, you will sample daily life at Nutmeg
with a tour and private meeting with the Housing Director who works to keep the home aspect of Nutmeg
life healthy and happy.
Our students build lifelong friendships while living and training at Nutmeg. Non-dance related activities
such as country hay rides, school dances, pumpkin carving and holiday giving projects build lasting bonds.
Students reside in either the Nutmeg dorm or our historic home in the heart of Torrington’s downtown cultural
district. In our dorm, a live-in Housing Director resides on the same floor as the students; Resident Advisors
are also present within all Nutmeg living facilities. High-tech security systems are in place throughout our
campus. In the main building, Nutmeg maintains a modern card/code access full security system. Housing
in our historic home offers older, post high school students the opportunity to take on the transitional
responsibilities of young adults.
Our food program is served in the
dorms/house for breakfast and
lunch and at the St. Francis School
Cafeteria for dinner. (In the summer,
all three meals are provided at the
St. Francis Cafeteria.) Colorful and
spacious rooms, wireless Internet,
study rooms, a private library and
kitchenettes are available for our
students’ use.
Students are expected to keep
a clean and welcoming living
environment. This responsibility shapes essential life skills and habits. Nutmeg facility personnel perform a
weekly assessment that ensures that the students’ quarters are maintained at their optimum. Students and
staff are provided a living environment that is safe, clean, and inviting for everyone.
