Do you know the feeling? The sun moves higher. Shadows
shorten. Fleeting smiles linger. Eyes glazed by winter’s frost
begin to soften. Furtive glances turn flirty. Spring’s playful
caresses invite summer sultriness. Skirts get shorter, hips
curvier, buttocks tighter. And the Luminato Festival wraps
Toronto in its passionate embrace.
And there is so much more to be aroused by. The return of
Louise Lecavalier, our continued collaboration with The New
York Times, The Copycat Academy, our first edition of a school
for emerging artists that will hopefully birth new ideas for future
festivals, our celebration of one of the greatest influencers in
music, Daniel Lanois, If I Loved You, an evening of broadway love
I’m talking about what we all do, have always done, will always
do, have to do to give birth, to create, to bond, to overcome, to
become, to die, to exist as a human race and, greatest of all, to
love: Sex. There is plenty of it at this year’s festival, alongside its
many siblings: Love, Birth, Death and Passion.

But don’t worry, you can bring your children or let them bring
you. Green Porno, starring the wonderful Isabella Rossellini,
is as pornographic as it will get, and then only in its title. She
takes us on a vibrant tour of procreation in the wild kingdom,
where kinkiness is commonplace. I dare say S&M looks
pretty harmless compared to what ducks naughtily get up
to. Toronto’s Mammalian Diving Reflex brings together seven
adults from all over the world to talk about all the sex they’ve
ever had. Kontakthof, performed by the great Tanztheater
Wuppertal and choreographed by the legendary Pina Bausch,
portrays the eternal struggle of the sexes for harmony. One
of the greatest contemporary choreographers, Samoan-born
Lemi Ponifasio, loses his Toronto virginity: after mesmerizing
nights in Montreal, Ottawa and around the globe, we finally get
to see one of his works.
at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Matthew Barney

and Argentinian born theatre shooting star Mariano Pensotti’s
Cineastas, a declaration of love to film.
Oh, and one question we finally had to answer this year:
Why is it okay to be almost nude on a beach but not in the
city? No longer! With Cardboard Beach, Los Carpinteros, the
celebrated artist duo from Cuba, are turning the Festival Hub
at David Pecaut Square into an urban oasis. Imagine sweaty
life guards outside Metro Hall or cleavage-parading beach
bums lining King Street.
All of this paired with 10 days of music and performance
programming, food, friends, joy, wonder and inspiration
throughout this city, your Toronto, that will hopefully leave
you breathless and craving more. Finally, before I forget, the
brochure is not in chronological order, but more the path that

It was a century ago that Scottish conservationist
Patrick Geddes coined the phrase “Think global, act
local.” Geddes’ rallying cry has since been co-opted by
endless organizations and causes. Cultivating the cultural
environment is what the Luminato Festival has been about
since its inception. And Geddes’ aphorism fits us perfectly:
the Luminato Festival remains grounded in Toronto, but is,
as Canada’s largest multi-arts festival, an increasingly vital
creative partner to the world. As incubator and co-producer,
we develop programming with sister festivals and arts centres
at home and around the globe. Our audience now extends
globally with live streaming of many of our Hub concerts
and artists’ talks. We are also uniquely positioned to partner
with other celebrations. This year we kick off a two-year
partnership with the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, with artists
from a spectrum of Pan American nations. And If I Loved
You: Gentlemen Prefer Broadway – an Evening of Love Duets
provides an ideal prelude to Toronto’s hosting of WorldPride.
We’re proudly local, but never lose sight of the worldview, and
hope you’ll make our world part of yours again this June.
If you happened to visit the Luminato Festival offices in, say,
early December, you’d see the fulltime staff intently focused
on the myriad of tasks required to create Canada’s premier
multi-arts celebration. Come back six months later, and you’ll
see the offices overcrowded with quadruple that many people,
with everyone racing to the finish line. Yet that is merely a
sample of the men and women who contribute to and make
the Luminato Festival one of the world’s preeminent cultural
summits. There are also, most importantly, the artists; and last
year we welcomed Canadian performers from nine provinces,
representing the majority of the Festival’s artistic content. True
to our global stature, we also hosted artists from 18 countries,
spanning six continents. As well, there is our loyal legion of
public, philanthropic and corporate supporters, without whom
the Festival simply wouldn’t exist. Finally, there is the vital army
of volunteers. Last year they numbered over 400, including
multilingual ambassadors and youth photographers, helping
ensure the Festival’s uninterrupted success. It is a remarkable
assembly of devoted individuals and organizations; and on
behalf of each and every one of them, including our dedicated
volunteer board of directors, I’m proud to welcome you to the
8th annual Luminato Festival.
John Keats taught us “beauty is truth, truth beauty.” This
rather fittingly captures the marvelously simpatico heart
of the relationship between Luminato Festival and L’Oréal
Canada over the past seven years. Since its inception, the
Festival has explored artistic truths with absolute integrity
and unparalleled verve while never losing sight of the
inherent beauty in everything it creates. Which is why its
incandescence, and its influence, extend so far beyond
Toronto, spanning not just Canada but the entire world. At
L’Oréal Canada we’re experts at shaping and defining beauty,
but appreciate that true beauty can never be measured
in strictly physical terms. Much of what you’ll see and
experience at this year’s Luminato Festival will outwardly
be stunningly beautiful. Some will not, the essence of its
beauty requiring deeper examination. Wherever, however
and in whatever form such beauty emerges, we will, with you,
heartily applaud its truthful depiction and cherish our role as
the Festival’s Partner in Creativity.

Cardboard
Beach
Los Carpinteros transform the
Festival Hub
“Cardboard Beach is an illusion, the essence of a beach in
a dry, urban space – with umbrellas, deck chairs, change
booths and breakwaters such as you might find in the
Caribbean or the Mediterranean. It is the fantasy of a beach
atmosphere in Toronto where ‘the beach’ is not a lifestyle,
even though it borders one of the five Great Lakes of North
America.” Such is the intent of Cardboard Beach, designed by
the Cuban collective Los Carpinteros to transform Luminato
Festival’s Hub at David Pecaut Square.

Founded in 1991, Los Carpinteros delight in the intersection
of art and society. The current team, Marco Antonio Castillo
Valdés and Dagoberto Rodríguez Sánchez, specialize in
merging architecture, design and sculpture in unexpected
and often humorous ways. The collective’s name, which
translates as The Carpenters, harks back to the timehonoured tradition of artisans and tradesmen. Their
exquisitely crafted work playfully juxtaposes form and
function, blending practicality with delightful uselessness.

Interactivo
Emeline Michel
Jesse Cook
Founded and led by Roberto Carcasses
– whose varied collaborations as a pianist,
vocalist and composer have extended from
Gonzalito Rubalcaba and Chucho Valdes
to Wynton Marsalis and George Benson –
Interactivo is a stellar collective of Cuban
musicians whose singular groove layers rap,
funk, jazz and soul atop traditional Afro-Cuban
rhythms. Featured performers, all of whom
have shaped vibrant solo careers, include
rapper Telmary, vocalists William Vivanco,
Francis del Rio and Brenda Navarrete and
Toronto-based guitarist Elmer Ferrer.
She has been called “the queen of Haitian
song” and the “new goddess of Creole music”
and indeed, singer-songwriter Emeline
Michel has been instrumental in putting
such distinctly Haitian styles as compas and
rara on the world music map. The Americantrained songstress emerged during the late
1980s, a remarkably vibrant era for Haitian
music. Singing both in French and Haitian
Creole, she has since released nine albums,
including last year’s stunning Quintessence,
and performed around the globe, prompting
The New York Times to hail her as “a
diplomat of music” with “a voice serene and
warm like a breeze.”
with special guest
Amanda Martinez
Paris-born guitarist and composer has earned
legendary status as the foremost, and most
gifted, proponent of the nouveau flamenco
movement, blending flamenco with rumba and
jazz to achieve a singularly dazzling sound.
The Toronto-based Cook’s latest album, The
Blue Guitar Sessions, was ignited by his nearobsession with Adele’s 21 and his esteem for
the smoky patina of early Miles Davis sessions,
inspiring his long-burning desire to create a
“blue mood” disc. For his Luminato Festival
debut, Cook will be joined on two songs by
Toronto-based singer-songwriter Amanda
Martinez, whose own flamenco fieriness draws
on Mexican and South African influences.

Choreographed by Pina Bausch
Any discussion of the 20th century’s most influential
choreographers must place Germany’s Pina Bausch in the
illustrious ranks of George Balanchine, Katherine Dunham,
Martha Graham and Jerome Robbins. Bausch forever
altered perceptions of contemporary choreography with
her landmark fusing of theatrical and dance elements to
create “Tanztheater”. Her frequently controversial, invariably
poetic blending of dancers with everyday elements focused
particularly on the diurnal “dance” that is male-female
relations. Kontakthof (translation: “courtyard of contact”) is
Bausch’s crowning achievement. First staged in 1978, it has
since earned global praise as a masterful examination of the
eternal battle of the sexes; wherein whatever balance and
harmony is achieved is ultimately scuttled because male
and female forces are inevitably opposed. The setting is a
drab dance hall (brilliantly designed by the late Rolf Borzik),
as separated groups of women and men slowly interact.
The need, and quest, for not just intimacy but love ignites a
spectrum of actions and reactions, sometimes angrily, often
comically, always brilliantly.
“The most highly anticipated dance event of 2014 can be
summed up in two words – Pina Bausch.” —The Globe and Mail

Stones In
Her Mouth
Lemi Ponifasio
North American Premiere
Heralded by Le Figaro as “among the greatest” contemporary
choreographers, Lemi Ponifasio is as profound a visionary
as Pina Bausch or Robert Wilson, transcending genres to
redefine the universal power of art. For his company of artists,
assembled from across his native Samoa, New Zealand and the
South Pacific, Ponifasio chose the name MAU, a Samoan word
that means the declaration of truth.
Ponifasio’s courageous Stones In Her Mouth brings together
ten Maori women. To the Maori, the first human was a woman,
Hineahuone. Women are the foundation of humanity and
respected as givers of life. Stones draws upon the powerful
moteatea tradition of female-written expressions of protest,
prophesy, warning and desire.
The performers themselves wrote everything communicated
in the piece. Their eloquence is immense. Through chants,
songs, oratory and dance, they unite in protest and rage
while also conveying resilience and adaptivity. They are not
pleading or admonishing or lecturing but serving as poetic
mirrors. Though all is voiced in the Maori language, the
emotive power of their message is universal, reflecting and
refracting societal ills and turmoil felt in all corners of the
world and at all strata.

A film by Matthew Barney and
Jonathan Bepler
Canadian Premiere
As the Luminato Festival did with Marina Abramovic in
2013, this year’s program provides a complete view of
groundbreaking artist Matthew Barney. San Francisco-born,
Idaho-raised, Yale-educated Barney has earned global
plaudits for his CREMASTER Cycle, created with longtime
collaborator, composer Jonathan Bepler. The epic Cycle will
be presented in its entirety at the TIFF Bell Lightbox and
selections from DRAWING RESTRAINT, Barney’s ongoing
series of studio experiments, will be exhibited at the AGO.
The cornerstone of the Festival’s multi-point Barney
celebration is his latest film River of Fundament, developed
with Bepler and loosely based on Norman Mailer’s towering
1983 novel Ancient Evenings.
River of Fundament is an epic story of regeneration and
rebirth that was conceived of as a contemporary opera
that combines documentary footage of three live acts in
Los Angeles, Detroit and New York, with live-action cinema.
A complete visual and conceptual departure from the
CREMASTER Cycle, River of Fundament will be viewable in
only one worldwide location at any time. Cast includes
Paul Giamatti, Elaine Stritch, Aimee Mullins, Milford Graves
and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

arresting, strange and beautiful images of our time.”

Imagine the art of seduction on an arthropodan or
elephantine scale. Such is the orgasmic, orgiastic and
occasionally acrobatic bent of internationally-acclaimed
actress Isabella Rossellini’s vibrant invasion of zoological
boudoirs, based on her short Green Porno films for the
Sundance Channel. A lifelong lover of animals, Rossellini
dons costume versions of their fur, skin, scales and wings
for this delightfully insightful, DayGlo examination of the
quirks, curiosities and frequently fatal risks of sexuality and
reproduction across a spectrum of species. Discover just how
boring even the kinkiest human couplings are in comparison
to the adventurousness of sexual relations in the wild.
Green Porno was co-written by Rossellini and Jean-Claude
Carrière, whose two-decade collaboration with director Luis
Buñuel produced such masterworks as Belle de Jour, The
Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and The Obscure Object
of Desire. Carriére’s esteemed body of work also includes the
screenplays for The Tin Drum and The Unbearable Lightness
of Being and the Oscar-winning short Heureux Anniversaire,
which he both wrote and directed. Green Porno is magically
enhanced by the imaginative staging of Muriel Mayette, an
accomplished actress and administrateur general of Paris’
Comédie-Française, the first woman appointed to the post in
the theatre’s 300-year history.

Face it: your parents do it. So do your grandparents. Yet the
idea of older folks having sex remains horrifying to kids and
grandkids. While our youth-obsessed culture ignores the
intimacy of our elders, Toronto-based performance company
Mammalian Diving Reflex plunges fearlessly into these sexy
waters with their frank, provocative and unpredictable All the
Sex I’ve Ever Had.
All the Sex I’ve Ever Had has been presented in six cities around
the world: Oldenburg, Bern, Singapore, Glasgow, Prague and
Philadelphia. For the Luminato Festival, Mammalian brings
together a team of older performers, one from each city, adding
a Torontonian to bring it all home. This cross-section of very
sexy senior men and women will open up about their sexual
adventures (and misadventures), courageously sharing their
private histories. Anything and everything is revealed, from
illicit decades-long liaisons and unexpected pregnancies, to
role-playing fantasies and orgies, to things we really shouldn’t
mention in a brochure. It’s all there. And it’s all true.

Paradisiacal Rites
Saint Genet
Conceived, Written & Directed by
Derrick Ryan Claude Mitchell
Canadian Premiere
When Marina Abramovic was asked by Harper’s Bazaar to
select ten young provocateurs to watch, Seattle’s Derrick
Ryan Claude Mitchell, artistic director of Implied Violence
and Saint Genet, placed high on her list. Straddling the
border between theatre and performance art, Mitchell’s
bold work follows in the experimental tradition of Abramovic,
Robert Wilson, Jean Genet and Chris Burden, whose 1971
performance Shoot, where he was shot in the arm with a .22
rifle, Mitchell recreated.
Paradisiacal Rites is Mitchell’s most ambitious piece to date:
a non-narrative exploration of American hysteria, nationalistic
vanity, and utopian fervour, Paradisiacal Rites examines the
delirious final moments of The Peoples Temple in Jonestown,
Guyana, the madness attached to the Charles Manson
murder trials, and manic derangement, through an obsessive
commitment to the Oscars. It transforms elements of ballet,
symphony, opera and installation into hypnotic and visceral
performance. Everything and nothing is sacred; and while
everything seen is real – blood, booze, nitrous gasses –
they exist as symbols to shape and propel this audacious
exultation of gloom and glamour.

Jason Collett’s
Basement Revue at
Luminato
Hosted by Jason Collett
In 2007, the year the Luminato Festival debuted, another
genre-blurring celebration of the arts was born in Toronto. It
was showman Jason Collett’s Basement Revue, a sensational
cross-pollination of Canadian literary and musical talent. Last
year, these two creative forces fused to unleash Jason Collett’s
Basement Revue at Luminato, a continuously evolving, utterly
unpredictable revelry that became the late-night destination
for Festival audiences and artists – a festival within the Festival.
Back by popular demand, again hosted by Collett, Basement
Revue moves to new digs, unfolding every night of the Festival
at the MOCCA Courtyard and Edward Day Gallery. Each
evening’s program will remain a mystery right up until show
time. Surprises are essential to the nightly magic. Impromptu
appearances and unscripted performances are all part of
the fun, so be prepared to see just about anyone or anything
unfold. And since the Revue serves as the official, nightly
after-party for all Festival artists, there’s no telling who you’ll be
rubbing elbows with at the bar or who’ll decide to leap onstage.
Event updates will be released daily. Follow the festivities via

World Premiere, produced by Hal Willner
Making music, as a singer-songwriter and as a producer, has
been Daniel Lanois’ lifelong passion. While still in his 20s, he
established his sterling reputation, producing a spectrum of
Canadian artists, from Martha and the Muffins to Raffi. Global
renown soon followed when frequent collaborator Brian Eno
invited Lanois to coproduce The Unforgettable Fire for U2. His
groundbreaking work with the band continued with The Joshua
Tree, Grammy winner for Album of the Year. He has since
produced albums for such varied superstars as Neil Young, Bob
Dylan, Peter Gabriel and Emmylou Harris.
As a performer, he has recorded eight bestselling albums and
contributed to several major film soundtracks. Last year, Lanois
was presented with the Governor General’s Performing Arts
Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement. Producer Hal Willner
has crafted legendary concerts interpreting and celebrating the
work of Neil Young, Leonard Cohen and Nino Rota, among many
others. His all-star salute to Lanois, celebrating five decades of
artistic brilliance, is sure to be as dazzlingly unforgettable.

If I Loved You:
Gentlemen Prefer Broadway
— An Evening of Love Duets
When?
Saturday, June 14, 7:30PM
Where?
Sony Centre for the Performing Arts
1 Front Street East
World Premiere
In 2006, Rufus Wainwright took showmanship to dazzling
new heights with his song-for-song re-creation, on the same
stage, of Judy Garland’s landmark 1961 concert at Carnegie
Hall. Now, in an equally bold move, Wainwright teams with
Grammy- and Tony-winning music director Stephen Oremus
to redefine dozens of the most beloved gems in the Great
American Songbook, all love songs from Broadway musicals.
In their original productions, these songs were performed
as duets by a man and a woman, or by a man singing about
a woman. Wainwright’s recontextualizations, performed
exclusively by men and to men, fortify the songs’ universality
as expressions of love.
Many of these treasured numbers were crafted by some
of Broadway’s most legendary gay men: Noel Coward, Cole
Porter, Jerry Herman, Lorenz Hart. Other songs, like Rodgers
and Hammerstein’s “We Kiss in a Shadow” from The King and
I, have long been claimed as anthems by the gay community.
The groundbreaking evening will showcase Wainwright
and an international spectrum of pop, rock, classical and
musical theatre stars. Drawing on a century of stage hits
and featuring a full Broadway orchestra, If I Loved You will
also serve as a wonderful prelude as Toronto hosts the first
WorldPride ever celebrated in North America.

tomorrow’s snow, an ephemeral yet enduringly powerful new
concept by Beijing-born, Canadian-raised artist Terence Koh,
began to take shape a year ago with a poetic email from Koh to
Luminato Festival artistic director Jorn Weisbrodt.
“deer jorn,” he wrote, “I just had an idea for the piece at the
luminato festival. its based on a margaret atwood novel i
remember reading when i was 8 years old. take a public square
in toronto that has trees in it. fill the plaza with tapiaco powder
so it looks like freshly fallen snow in summer. have an 8-year-old
boy and an 8-year-old girl holding hands and dressed simply in
all white. they make snow angels for eight minutes.”
The tree-filled “plaza” envisioned by Koh is at the elegant
grounds of Kleinburg’s McMichael Canadian Art Collection. Each
evening, preceded by events in the gallery’s foyer, Koh’s magical
flight of fancy briefly becomes reality, before disappearing into
the landscape, as snow angels do.
a way to the light, located in the Artists’ Cemetery on the
McMichael grounds, is a tribute to Canadian artist and writer Emily
Carr. These commissions celebrate Koh’s first solo showing in
Canada and mark the debut of a new phase of his work.
“I used to do sculptures and sound pieces but now I’m just
trying to be. A lot of these things I’m doing don’t require
a studio. It’s just me being myself and asking questions. I
think it’s important for me to be as immaterial as possible.
And maybe in this immateriality there’s spirituality, and
maybe in this spirituality there is humanity.”

So Blue
Louise Lecavalier
Ontario Premiere
Physically, Louise Lecavalier is an arresting composite
of David Bowie and Tilda Swinton and is, in the world of
contemporary dance, as iconic as both. The Montreal native
began her career at 18 with Le Groupe Nouvelle Aire, where
she met choreographer Édouard Lock. With Lecavalier as his
principal inspiration, Lock created La La La Human Steps.
Many of the troupe’s seminal works – including Human Sex,
New Demons and 2 – were defined by her remarkable power
and presence. Lecavalier also figured prominently in Lock’s
collaborations with Frank Zappa and, fittingly, Bowie.
So Blue, first presented in Düsseldorf in late 2012, marks her
volcanic emergence as a choreographer. Its titular shade is,
she believes, the colour of the soul. Describing the 60-minute
piece, Lecavalier says “I wanted to allow the body to say
everything it wants to say without censoring it, so that out of
this profusion of spontaneous movements, something true
and beyond our control emerges.”
The first 30 minutes of So Blue, its vibrant, swirling
soundtrack composed by Turkish-born Montrealer Mercan
Dede, features Lecavalier in a perilous solo. Joined by
Frédéric Tavernini for the second half, their raw, shared
energy reaches dizzying heights.

In his third Luminato Festival appearance, Montreal-based
scratch DJ and music producer Kid Koala follows last year’s
immersive, whimsical Space Cadet with another magical, multidisciplinary adaptation of one of his graphic novels, reimagining
his first book, Nufonia Must Fall. The story centres around a
headphones-sporting robot on the verge of obsolescence and
unemployment that becomes infatuated with a winsome, if
clumsy, office drone. Though the robot cannot sing, he valiantly
tries to write love songs and serenade his beloved.
This live adaptation unfolds via real-time filming, using
multiple cameras, of more than a dozen miniature stages
and the careful manipulation of a cast of puppets. Observe
the creation of scenes and simultaneously watch it on
screen. Director K.K. Barrett, renowned for his work on films
by Spike Jonze and Sofia Coppola has created a dreamy
interpretation of the story. He was recently nominated for
an Oscar for his work on the film Her. Live scoring on piano,
strings and turntables is provided by Koala in collaboration
with the dynamic Afiara Quartet, currently the Glenn Gould
School Fellowship Quartet-in-Residence at Toronto’s Royal
Conservatory of Music.

Cineastas
Written and directed by
Mariano Pensotti
North American Premiere
Among Latin America’s brightest talents, Argentinean author
and director Mariano Pensotti has earned plaudits for his
masterfully experimental work at leading festivals the world
over. Four years ago, Pensotti began a series of interviews
with various filmmakers in Buenos Aires. He was particularly
interested in the ties between their private lives and their
films. How, he wondered, did aspects of their lives play out
in the fictions they were creating? From those discussions,
Cineastas was born. Pensotti followed four filmmakers
as each completed a movie in and around Buenos Aires.
Concurrently he captured their day-to-day activities and
interactions on film. Designer Mariana Tirantte has created
a stage with a split screen, allowing parallel interplay of the
filmmakers’ lives and the films they shot. As it unspools,
five actors, each filling multiple roles, narrate and contrast
the multiple stories, embodying the directors in their daily
lives and the characters in their films. Pensotti splices the
actors’ live performances like film scenes, achieving an effect
reminiscent of Robert Altman’s Shortcuts. Ultimately, his
intent is not only to dramatize how reality influences fiction,
but also how fiction shapes and influences our reality.

An imaginary journey by Kid Koala and
Fred Morin with real food and music
World Premiere
Most likely that light at the end of a tunnel is a train.
Trains have opened up the frontiers of the unknown and at
the same time have absorbed and stored the mythology and
exoticism of the places they made accessible to us. Riding
a train has for generations been something transformative,
neither here nor there, an in-between state but at the same
time full of comfort and a sense of belonging. Walt Disney
invented Mickey Mouse on a train ride, Edward Hopper
claimed that riding a train was “entirely human”, Trollope
wrote most of his novels criss-crossing the UK.
Composer/Turntablist Kid Koala and Fred Morin, co-founder
of Montreal’s famous restaurant Joe Beef, both discovered
their passion for trains. Does time stop when you are on a
train? Do you enjoy the journey for the adventure of it or for
the otherworldliness and the thrill of train travel? The Lost
Train is not really about travel, or about food, or about music
– rather, about leaving all of that behind and paying attention
to the moment, to the childhood memories and to where a
journey might lead you, without it ever ending.
This exclusive, once-in-a-lifetime experience is open to
eight people per journey, with only 12 journeys in total. Each
journey comes complete with drinks and delicious eats. The
Lost Train is an amazing opportunity to have these stars of
the music and food scene play and cook for you, as though
in your own living room. Your body will be fully fed by these
masters of their crafts, while your soul might discover
the sweet hunger for places and thoughts you have not
travelled to before.
Are you up for an adventure, where what you see is not quite
what you observe?

In 1902, pseudonymous card cheat S.W. Erdnase published the seminal sleightof-hand text The Expert at the Card Table. Nine decades later, inspired by
Erdnase’s work, composer Gavin Bryars and Spanish poet and sculptor Juan
Muñoz created A Man in a Room, Gambling for BBC Radio, ten string quartet
pieces with accompanying narration. In 1997, London’s Artangel commissioned
Bryars and Muñoz to perform the work live at the Maida Vale concerts.
Performer, director, playwright and magician Rob Drummond becomes William
Wonder to tell the incredible story of William Henderson, who died on stage
while attempting to catch a bullet, a stunt so dangerous even Houdini refused
to attempt it. A feast of theatrical magic, Bullet Catch combines storytelling,
mindreading, levitation, games of chance and, for those brave enough to
stay, the most notorious finale in show business. Supported by the Made in
Scotland development fund, Bullet Catch debuted at the 2012 Edinburgh
Festival, where it received a Total Theatre Award.
Now, David Ben brings fresh perspective to their collaboration with Card
Table Artifice, performed by the Art of Time Ensemble and accompanied by

On each day of this weeklong experience, the 20 participants
in The Copycat Academy will examine a different facet of
General Idea’s work and thinking. The practical and theoretical
investigations, studio visits and discussions will be led

contemporary artists whose work follows a recursive path.

The Copycat Academy takes the work and biography of
an artist as the model for its curriculum. Over a one-week
intensive learning experience, an artist’s method of production
will be hijacked and subjected to a temporary parasitic
inhabitation. The 2014 pilot will start with one of the most
influential artist collectives of the late 20th century: Torontobased General Idea. This is meant to be idolatry and cult.
Or more precisely, an act of mimicry. Or more accurately, it
is a critical test of thought and practice, a laboratory where
20 participants can observe the emergence of meaning
while they occupy and replicate themselves in the host. It’s a
masterclass with an absent master.

Lynch’s groundbreaking Blue Velvet
to Denis Villeneuve’s erotic Enemy,
she is as gifted as her mother, Ingrid
Bergman. As a storyteller, she is as
masterful as her father, Italian auteur
Roberto Rossellini. In her short film My
Dad is 100 Years Old, she played every
part, including Alfred Hitchcock and
her mother. New York Times editor
Sam Sifton talks with her about her
transformative skills reaching greater
heights with Green Porno (see page
20), in which she embodies insects and
animals to explore sexuality in the wild.
From Show Boat’s “Make Believe” to
Rent’s “Without You,” no Broadway
musical would be complete without a
love duet. Cornerstones of the Great
American Songbook, these numbers
have been endlessly reinterpreted,
but never as cannily as by Rufus
Wainwright and his all-star compatriots
in the Luminato Festival’s If I Loved
You: Gentlemen Prefer Broadway – An
Evening of Love Duets (see page 30).
In a spirited discussion led by New
York Times chief pop music critic Jon
Pareles, Wainwright and company
examine both their take of these classic
songs and the lyricists who crafted
them, as well as their careers and their
current projects.
If you know him solely for his 17
years with the band Talking Heads
and subsequent solo albums, then
you’ve barely skimmed the surface of
David Byrne’s artistic genius. Byrne’s
kaleidoscopic career has included film
and TV scores, filmmaking, theatre,
journalism and literature, visual arts,
choreography, and, in keeping with
his passion for cycling, the design
of location-inspired bike racks. His
collaborations extend from Twyla Tharp
to Arcade Fire. Byrne’s keen interest in
the evolution of the music business and
technology will take centre stage in his
wide-ranging interview with New York
Times media reporter Ben Sisario.

Stieg Larsson, Henning Mankell and Jo

that have transformed the crime fiction
genre and brought it unprecedented global
renown. Three regional masters of the form

The Lost Songs
of Toronto
More than fifty writers for all the reading ages assemble for a multi-faceted, daylong crossmedia celebration of Toronto, the Unseen. Begin the day with A Literary Picnic, at which a
cornucopia of novelists, young adult and children’s writers share their words and views on
three open stages, with the Toronto Public Library’s bookmobile and food trucks present.
Then follow select authors on Literary Walks through the city neighbourhoods that have
inspired their work or been dear to them. Afterwards, finish the day with Soulpepper’s
delightful cabaret, The Lost Songs of Toronto, in which Toronto’s fabled poet laureate Dennis
Lee and five of the theatre’s Resident Artists explore the bygone songs of Hogtown – ballads
and love songs, children’s tunes and rock anthems that have carried the explicit stamp of
the city for 200 years. Only what to do if these songs are “lost” because they never existed?
Write and sing them anew, that’s what, says the beloved author of Alligator Pie. With Waleed
Abdulhamid, John Millard, Patricia O’Callaghan, Mike Ross and Suba Sankaran.

Take on Me
Luminato Festival’s
daily newspaper
A partnership between Luminato Festival and
PATTISON Onestop
LightNews is a “performance in print.”
Providing information from the practical to
the esoteric, LightNews delves deep into the
extraordinary happenings of the Festival’s 10
days and provides an exclusive, all-access
pass to the thoughts, lives and aspirations of
Festival actors, directors, painters, sculptors,
musicians, authors, programmers, dancers
and producers in their own voices.
Art is a global language that breaks down cultural differences,
and brings people together. Maybe it is the only language
where true communication and an exchange of ideas is
possible. Take on Me is a virtual dialogue via video art
between artists from Toronto and artists that the Luminato
Festival is bringing to Toronto. The artists from outside
of Toronto were asked to create a short video piece that
represents their work. The artists from Toronto were then
asked to create a response. The mini video dialogues will be
presented on platform screens at all all TTC subway station
platform screens stations prior to, and during, the Luminato
Festival. These short clips, played every 10 minutes, function
like a pause button during the autoplay of everyone’s subway
trip. It is an invitation to dream beyond the confines of one’s
own life, one’s own commute and potentially, and very slightly,
to lead our thoughts off track.
Thrill to tales of artistic triumph and terror,
come to know artists through interviews
conducted at light speed. Insightful, funny,
wicked and luminous, LightNews is essential
reading for festivalgoer and bystander alike.
Copies of LightNews will be available daily
June 6–15 at the Festival Hub in David
Pecaut Square and other Festival venues.
Drop by the box office or ask a volunteer for

In what has become a beloved Luminato Festival tradition,
Music Director Peter Oundjian and the Toronto Symphony
Orchestra invite you to stay up late and be dazzled by one
of the most powerful and popular symphonies ever written:
Shostakovich’s mighty Symphony No. 5. Completed in 1937,
Symphony No. 5 was premiered that same year by the
Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra and proved a thundering
triumph, eliciting a 30-minute ovation. At the time, one
prominent critic praised the magnificent, four-movement
work as “joyous, optimistic, life-affirming.” Sharing the bill with
Shostakovich is an equally bold pioneer, American composer
Mason Bates. The TSO will be among the first to present his
new “Garages of the Valley,” a clever, all-acoustic celebration
of Silicon Valley’s tech visionaries. After the performance,
mingle with TSO musicians at a party in the Roy Thomson
Hall lobby, featuring live music by local musicians.

The Hidden Cameras
Since their emergence
in 2001, The Hidden
Cameras, founded by
singer-songwriter Joel Gibb,
have emerged as Toronto’s
sharpest, sagest and most
outrageously savvy indie
band. Their brand of “gay
church folk music” has filled
eight albums, including the
recently released Age. Gibb’s
gutsiest release to date is, he
says, “no longer concerned
with who he is but rather
with how he came to be.”

Visit luminatofestival.com
Presented by Thomas Golubić (music supervisor for Breaking
Bad) with performances by Colin Stetson (saxophonist of
Arcade Fire, Bon Iver), SYNCHRONIZE approaches classic films
as living experiences, ripe for a fresh creative spin, new insight
and a deeper appreciation. Having performed live DJ re-scores
at numerous festivals including Sundance Film Festival and
Bonnaroo, Golubić will work with live musicians for the first time
to create an original curated soundtrack for Jim Jarmusch’s
classic film, Down By Law.
In a warm up to the feature film, Golubić will open the night
with an audio/video DJ set featuring classic, popular and art
films from different eras synchronized to contemporary music.
These custom-created montages will run the gamut from
mad scientists set to the Pixies, monster movies with Diana
Ross and Sesame Street alongside old school funk.

Aline Morales
Seu Jorge
Arguably the most accomplished – certainly
the most vibrant – Brazilian musician in
Canada, Aline Morales built her reputation
as a percussionist and bandleader. With the
2011 release of her Juno-nominated Flores,
Tambores e Amores she also revealed her
prowess as a vocalist and composer while
demonstrating the breadth of her interpretive
brilliance. For her Luminato Festival debut,
Morales and her quintet demonstrate that
same imaginativeness with an all-original,
all-Brazilian set that goes beyond Brazil by
flavouring traditional samba and bossa beats
with African and European spices, adding
enticing dashes of avant-garde poetry.
Rio-born singer-songwriter Seu Jorge is
comfortable in almost any music genre,
yet remains staunchly true to his samba
roots. “Samba is our truth,” he says, “our
particularity, our gold medal, our bastion,
our Brazilian flag.” Since 2001, he has
released six top-selling albums, including
Seu Jorge & Almaz, a sparkling 2010 summit
with Brazilian contemporaries Lúcio Maia,
Presented By:
Antônio Pinto and Pupillo. Jorge is also an
accomplished actor, best known for his
appearance in director Wes Anderson’s The

Buffy Sainte-Marie
Two musicians, growing up in the mid20th century in very different corners of
Saskatchewan: in the 1960s, they cross
paths in Toronto’s Yorkville district and in
Greenwich Village. Ultimately they emerge
as the most iconic, female Canadian
singer-songwriters of their, or any, era. One
is Joni Mitchell; the other is Buffy SainteMarie. Though much of her work, spanning
nearly two-dozen albums, focuses on her
Cree heritage and the glories and woes of
Indigenous people across the Americas, she,
like Mitchell, paints on the broadest of music
canvases, unfailingly, unflinchingly speaking
truth to power.

Alejandra Ribera
Aptly described by songwriter Jim Corcoran
as “serenely sensual, poetic, playful and
profound,” Alejandra Ribera is a Canadian
singer-songwriter with Scottish and
Argentine roots, a marvelous olio resulting in
a singularly scintillating sound. Discovered by
CBC radio during an extended residency at
Toronto’s Cameron House, Ribera released
the self-produced Navigator in 2009.
She has performed with the Skydiggers,
Jackie Richardson, Steven Page and Teddy
Thompson. Her sophomore album, La Boca,
has been years in development as, in tandem
with celebrated French-Canadian producer
Jean Massicotte, she’s painstakingly
deliberated every creative detail.
In 1922, filmmaker Robert J. Flaherty paved
the way for the modern documentary with
his contentious but momentous chronicle of
a year in the life of Inuit Nanook, Nanook of
the North. Now, throat singer Tanya Tagaq,
known for her work with Björk and the Kronos
Quartet, draws upon her family’s history in
far northern Quebec and her own Nunavut
childhood to reclaim Flaherty’s masterpiece.
With music composed by Derek Charke,
Tagaq unites with two equally celebrated
musicians – violinist Jesse Zubot and
percussionist Jean Martin – to reactualize the
film’s silent images with emotive soundscapes.

five albums have garnered multiple Juno
nominations, and include 2007’s Freedom No
Go Die, which spawned the boldly political
single “Mista President,” and their brand new
album Inner Fire. Stylistically, it is their most
adventurous outing to date, adding Eastern
influences and elements of spiritual jazz to their
remarkable sound.
Think of them as music’s great continental
collision, a glorious melting pot of European,
South American and African influences. British
DJ and producer Richard Blair united with
Colombian singer-songwriter Iván Benavides
in Bogota in 1996 to create Sidestepper and,
blending electronica with Afro-Colombian
rhythms, ignited the cutting-edge “electro
cumbia” sound. Six explosive albums and a
show-stopping performance at the 2004
Coachella Music Festival secured their global
popularity. Benavides departed in 2007, but

The Soul Rebels
Inspired by New Orleans’ glorious brass band
tradition, Toronto’s Heavyweights Brass
Band has shared stages with Trombone
Shorty, Galactic and fellow Luminato Festival
headliners The Roots. Their debut album,
Don’t Bring Me Down, was a knockout, as is
their seismic new Brasstronomical.
Described by the Village Voice as “the
missing link between Public Enemy and Louis
Armstrong,” the unique, brassy sound of The
Soul Rebels emerged in the early 1990s when
cofounders Lumar LeBlanc and Derrick Moss
married traditional New Orleans jazz with
contemporary pop and hip-hop.

Ziggy Marley:
The Fly Rasta Tour
In 2002, the Sierra Leone civil war ended and
the Refugee All Stars emerged like light from
the darkness. Under the direction of Reuben
Koromo, the band progressed from jam
sessions in Guinean refugee camps to fledgling
recordings in their native capital of Freetown.
Six-time Grammy winner, Emmy winner,
humanitarian, singer, songwriter and producer,
Ziggy Marley has released twelve albums to
critical acclaim. The eldest son of Bob Marley,
his much-anticipated fifth solo studio album
Fly Rasta was released earlier this year.

Catrin Finch & Seckou Keita
Aptly known as the “Queen of the Harp,”
Cardiff’s Catrin Finch graduated from the
Royal Academy of Music in 2002. But her
regal connections don’t end there. She
subsequently revived a British tradition,
dormant for a century-and-a-half, when she
was named Royal Harpist to the Prince of
Wales. Though Finch’s solo and orchestral
work has earned her worldwide accolades,
never has her playing been more stunningly
showcased than in tandem with Senegal-born
Seckou Keita, master of the harp-like kora.
The beauty, and passion, of their musical and
cultural twining is inimitably exquisite.

Salute to the Americas
Visit luminatofestival.com
For the third consecutive year, the Luminato
Festival wraps in grand style with a free
outdoor concert from the Toronto Symphony
Orchestra, conducted by Music Director
Peter Oundjian. This year, in anticipation
of Toronto’s 2015 hosting of the PanAm/
Parapan Am Games, the orchestra is
shaping a musical travelogue, touring the
Western Hemisphere from north to south.
This melodic salute, as vivid as it is varied,
includes compositions by John Weinzwieg
(Canada), John Williams (USA), Ernesto
Lecuona (Cuba), Villa Lobos (Brazil) and
Alberto Ginastera (Argentina). Flag-waving is
heartily encouraged!

including Wayson Choy, Atom Egoyan, Bette Logan and Dan

Virginia Antonipillai, Sanjay Ratnan, Daniel Lastres Rodrigues,
Kathy Vuu, and Wendell Williams. High School Health
