BULLIS LACROSSE 2015 Congratulations Seniors BULLDOGS HAVE BULLDOGS A GREAT SEASON! BULLDOGS BULLDOGS Love, Your Families BULLIS BOYS LACROSSE SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY Founded in 1930, Bullis School is an independent co-educational college preparatory day school for students in grades 2-12. A total of 765 students are enrolled, including 461 in the Upper School, grades 9-12. Located in a suburb of Washington, D.C., Bullis admits students who will contribute in the classroom and throughout the community and who will embrace the school’s participatory approach. Students balance academics with arts and athletics, along with activities that encourage students to pursue their passions and discover new skills and interests. MISSION Bullis provides a student-centered, balanced experience in academics, athletics, the arts and community service. Bullis uniquely prepares all students to become caring citizens and creative, critical thinkers who will thrive in tomorrow’s world. EDUCATIONAL APPROACH At Bullis, we believe that the best education is achieved through balance. Here, students learn and grow, discover academic and extra-curricular passions, value community, develop lifelong skills and are happier and more confident because of the balance we provide. The school’s approach is framed by our core academic values: communication, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and resourcefulness. From a challenging college preparatory education to a full array of performing groups, athletic teams and student service clubs, Bullis provides students with the chance to learn in the classroom and art studio, and on the playing field and stage. 2 • BULLIS SCHOOL While preparing students for college, the Upper School also requires students to participate in two school sports or extra-curricular activities each year, which further cultivates personal growth and helps students to develop or refine interests and passions. In addition, advisory groups and other events throughout the school year focus on character development to round out the skill set that Bullis graduates take with them when they leave the school. ACADEMIC PROGRAM Bullis students are required to complete a rigorous course load before graduation. A wide array of honors and AP courses are offered. In addition, Bullis offers students the opportunity to enroll in blended learning courses where they may study such subjects as astrophysics, epidemiology, journalism, and research design and methods in a flexible and self-motivated environment. Four signature programs provide opportunities for ambitious students to pursue specific interests in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), entrepreneurship, humanities and global studies, or visual and performing arts. Students who complete one of these programs, in addition to their regular required coursework, may earn certification that informs colleges of their interests and pre-college studies and experience. ATHLETICS Bullis has 25 athletic teams, many of which compete in the IAC (boys) or ISL (girls) leagues for local area independent schools. Our teams are highly accomplished yet Bullis believes that all students, no matter their skill level, should BULLIS BOYS LACROSSE have the opportunity to participate. We believe that teamwork, sportsmanship, school spirit and learning to win and lose gracefully are paramount life skills. With 63 interscholastic teams competing in 14 different sports, there is a place for every student. BLENDED ONLINE LEARNING Bullis offers a blended online learning program for Upper School students. The courses listed below have been developed by Bullis School faculty and are taught through its web-based learning management platform called Haiku Learning Systems. The courses are fully developed with clearly defined goals, objectives, activities and student outcomes to meet core academic standards. Typically each class meets with the teacher in the traditional student-driven classroom setting two to three days per week. For the remaining two to three days per week, the class meets in a proctored virtual class session, typically in the Bullis library, for online work. While the workload for each course is designed for five days per week, the online work settings provide flexibility for students to manage their time. Blended online learning courses offered: • Advanced Journalism • Advanced Spanish Communication & Culture •Astrophysics •Journalism • Mechanical Engineering • Poverty & Equity in Montgomery County • Research Design & Methods A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE A key part of Bullis’ balanced approach is including opportunities for students to gain broader perspectives on their world. Locally, students regularly engage in a range of community service projects, from single events to ongoing commitments with shelters and food banks and other organizations that provide a range of services in the community. Bullis requires no community service hours for graduation; our students participate in community service because they genuinely enjoy it. On a broader level, Bullis’ Global Studies & Service program organizes six to eight trips each year for students to travel overseas for community service and educational activity. Recently, groups constructed buildings for a school in Cambodia, participated in the International Model U.N. Conference at The Hague, performed at the Roncalli Theater Festival in Italy and observed turtle habitats in St. Kitts. Additional intensive cross-cultural experiences are being developed for both teachers and students: new programs include student exchanges with schools in Peru and Germany and teacher exchanges with the Ameson Foundation in China. • English Intensive •Epidemiology BOYS LACROSSE 2015 • 3 BULLIS BOYS LACROSSE BULLIS LACROSSE WIN/LOSS RECORD YEAR WI N LO S S TI E 199998 2000 12 6 2002 13 5 2003 8 7 2004 13 5 2005 10 7 2006 10 8 2007 11 6 2008 13 7 2009 14 7 2010 15 5 2011 13 6 2012 14 4 2013 9 9 201413 6 4 • BULLIS SCHOOL BULLIS BOYS LACROSSE BULLIS LACROSSE ALUMNI – WHERE THEY PLAYED YEARNAM E 1988 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 Clayton Simmers Brian Rolapp Brian Raymond Gardner DeFranceaux Adam Davis Cameron Pratt Matt Davis Kevin Cronin Ben Rippeon Josh Wichard Eric Gins Zeb Mellett Aaron Moatz Lee Kenneth Edward Scopin Joseph Scopin Sebby Astrada Bubba Bunting John Hull Mark Newlan Ben Spohn Zack Rice Tom Cowles Mark Davis Jonathan Sowanick Sean O’Neill Alex Morriss Kory Daniels Ben Donoghue Preston Foulger Elliott Jones Ross Koenig Vladimir Tintchev Jared Robins Scott Sowanick Josh Posnick Craig Aronoff Branden Chasen Paul Davis Mike Embersit Grant Hollingsworth Brad Ross Jordan Burke Thomas Clute Nick Donoghue Kermit Carter Todd Helman Josh Robins Josh Ein Jordan Cafritz Freddie Leighton Clark Appleby SCHOOL YEARNAM E Yale BYU Wittenberg Wittenberg BYU BYU BYU Cornell Washington & Lee OWU Mary Washington Washington & Lee Middlebury Amherst College Mary Washington Lynchburg Middlebury Army Ohio State Virginia Tech Stanford Middlebury Salisbury BYU Gettysburg Kenyon Wooster Drew Brown BYU Penn State Dickinson Pitt Arizona Princeton Delaware OWU Franklin & Marshall BYU Fairfield Brown Duke Brown Duke Johns Hopkins Villa Julie College SMU SMU Michigan University of Wisconsin Hobart Dickinson 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 Hunter Gosnell Zachary Harwood Brian Jackson Christopher Mejia Svet Tinchev Brandon Allen Price Foulger Andrew Fisher Shaun Crow Brooke Slowinski Dan Tardiff Brian Will Steven Burke Scott Sowanick Andy Will Zach Weiner Jake Sentz Nick Avedisian Mason Powell Tyler Scarff Ricky Goldberg Will Abbott Robert Fleming Archer Knopes Jake Starke Carlos Astrada Sebby Astrada Jordan Burke John Kelly Scott Crow Ryan McMahon Lincoln Leahy Jeff Kimm Matt Hicks Matt Osphal Kylor Bellistri Nick Fields Brandon Burke Max Nordeen Mitchell Goldberg Joe Stucky Ben Catt Rashaad Wise Alex Robinson Nick Matzelevich SCHOOL Lynchburg College Middlebury College UPENN Middlebury College University of Michigan Duke BYU VMI OWU Miami of Ohio OWU Georgetown Johns Hopkins Washington Bayhawks Notre Dame Muhlenburg College Lynchburg College Gettysburg College Gettysburg College Hampden-Sydney College Arizona St. Joseph’s University Providence College Rollins College Bates College Team Argentina Middlebury, Team Argentina Brown, Boston Cannons Johns Hopkins RPI OWU Sewanee Trinity Richmond Hobart Brown Johns Hopkins Colgate Bowdoin Richmond Boston University Middlebury College Lynn University Georgetown University Siena College BOYS LACROSSE 2015 • 5 BULLIS BOYS LACROSSE SEASON OUTLOOK VARSITY Offense: The offense returns 3 starting attackmen—Steven Shollenberger, Nicky Petkevich and Alex Trippi—and will look to this trio to put pressure on opposing defenses. Michael Culham and Ethan Tauber return and will be looking to work their way into the line-up. At the midfield, the team graduated the leadership of Joe Stucky and Greg Lovegrove while returning Drew Petkevich and Will Gansler (moving from attack) and look forward to a strong transition game in 2015. Also at the midfield the team will need solid contributions from seniors Zac Culham and Thomas Opsahl. Juniors Jack Forrest, John Markovs and Chris Hsu are expected to make significant contributions to the midfield this season while junior Max Menkes will have an opportunity to play on both the attack and midfield units this spring. Face-off specialist Joseph Stein will play a major role in driving the success of the team and will work with Michael Chiaramonte and Jahred Jackson to control the faceoff X. Defense: The defense will be led by a group of juniors—Griff Gosnell, Paul Steel, Noah Weinberger, and Owen Patch who are replacing 4 defenseman who are currently playing in college. Bullis is also hoping for some freshmen and new players to Bullis to round out the 2015 roster. The 2015 season will usher in the third lacrosse coach at Bullis since the 1980’s. 6 • BULLIS SCHOOL The team is looking forward to a challenging and exciting season. The 2015 Bulldogs schedule features Boys Latin—the top ranked lacrosse team in the nation in 2014—along with the 12th ranked team nationally St Paul’s. Bullis will play 5 teams ranked in the top 25 nationally at the end of the 2014 season. Bullis has Rockhurst Jesuit—the 2014 Missouri State Champions—and North Carolina State Champions Cardinal Gibbons on its schedule. Bullis will also make a trip to the Eastern Shore to play Delaware State Champion Cape Henlopen and Worchester Prep in a late March matchup. Bullis ends the season with long time rivals in the Interstate Athletic Conference—Landon, Georgetown Prep, St Stephens-St Agnes, Episcopal and St Alban’s. Please be sure to support the 2015 Bullis Bulldogs lacrosse team. JUNIOR VARSITY The Bullis JV boys lacrosse program is an integral part of our long term success. While it has proven to be a great developmental program in terms of establishing proper stick skills and technique, it also serves as a spring board to the varsity. The varsity team success is based on the work done by many of our underclassmen while on the JV team. The Bullis lacrosse program prides itself on “homegrown” talent from the lower school, middle school, or the 9th grade entry point for upper school. Many of our players had tremendous middle school and JV careers before joining the varsity team. We are excited to welcome Vincent White, David Zolet and Ryder Henry as our coaches. All three bring a wealth of knowledge and talent to help ensure the success of the JV program continues. BULLIS BOYS LACROSSE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Andres Parra BOYS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR HEAD COACH, BOYS VARSITY SOCCER A Bullis alum, Coach Parra was a four-year varsity starter for the boys soccer team, and named All-IAC for three years. He was a star soccer player in college, and after a year in the corporate world, Coach Parra returned to Bullis. In addition to his role as Boys Athletic Director and Boys Varsity Soccer Head Coach, he skillfully juggles a great variety of tasks and duties, including helping with admissions, coaching basketball and soccer, and maintaining our fields to make sure they are the best in the ISL and IAC. He has recently taken on the role of 5th grade PE teacher, where he brings his energy, enthusiasm and love for sport to the Lower School. “It’s easy to see how much pride he has in Bullis,” said Coach Lloyd. “He cares deeply about each team, each athlete, and each coach and dedicates himself fully to the betterment of all the programs. His dedication to and love of this school is overwhelming, and contagious to everyone he comes in contact with.” COACHES Jeff Bellistri VARSITY HEAD COACH Jeff Bellistri assumed the role as Bullis School’s new Head Lacrosse Coach this year for the boys varsity program. Bellistri is a long-time teacher in the Upper School at Bullis and has been a part of the Bullis lacrosse program since 2001. During that time, he has served as varsity assistant coach for 12 years, one year as JV head coach and 13 years as MS coach. Prior to arriving at Bullis, Bellistri held the head varsity coach position at St. Andrew’s (Potomac, MD) for five years, where he had a 52-26 record. Coach Bellistri has also coached for more than ten years in local youth lacrosse leagues.
