Our Annual Appreciation Dinner is scheduled for Tuesday, April 16th, at the Rock Garden Conference Center. Social hour begins at 5:00pm with dinner, entertainment and awards to follow. Matches will be able to have their photos taken for a package cost of $13. The Annual Appreciation Dinner honors the time and effort that Bigs and Littles put into making a successful match as well as honoring our contributors, board and committee members whose support is so important to the success of our program. Plan on attending to see who will be recognized as this year’s “Community-based Match of the Year”, “Sitebased Match of the Year,” “Board Member of the Year,” “Partnership of the Year” and other Recognition Awards. Entertainment: The Juggler with the Yellow Shoes As seen on America’s Got Talent, comic Juggler Dan Kirk will juggle his way into our hearts and make us laugh ‘til we cry! 1 Letter from the Executive Director Bowl For Kids’ Sake was a lot of fun, a great success and it was nice seeing so many people participating in the festive activity. It’s officially Spring! We are experiencing additional daylight hours, Easter is just around the bend and it soon will be warm too! These events remind me it is “that time of year” when we hold our annual banquet to celebrate last year’s accomplishments, say thank you to all involved and share our excitement for a new year…a new opportunity to start something impactful. There is a renewed energy as winter gives way to springtime flowers, tree buds, singing birds and our staff plans for our celebration banquet. This is a time when Bigs, Littles, sponsors, staff and many other volunteers gather to express a shared enthusiasm, acknowledge accomplishments and embark on another year of impacting lives. Quite like springtime, our collective agency efforts give hope and promise of new possibilities. These include possibilities for our youth to have life-changing experiences, for our volunteers to offer fulfilling service, for our donors to experience personal gratification supporting such impactful programs and our staff to help facilitate the amazing process changing lives for the better, forever. Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring efforts definitely “Start Something” and impact generations into the future helping make Northeastern Wisconsin a more vibrant place to live. As always, I want to remind everyone, we still have a lengthy list of youth on our ready-to-be-matched list, and each could benefit from a volunteer mentor. I believe there is nothing that benefits me more than to help another. So, please share how rewarding it is to serve as a Big Brother, Big Sister or a Big Couple and promote it to your friends, co-workers, family members and other acquaintances. More information can be found on our website www.bbbsnew.org or contact our office (920) 4982227 and/or [email protected]. Thank you for all you do to strengthen our community!! August: Brown County Fair Activity Summer Picnic Downtown Library, Summer Reading Program 2 Door County Corner We currently have 15 matches, and more to come. Word is spreading about how much fun it is to be a Big Brother or Big Sister in Southern Door! Recent comments from some of our Bigs: “Our meeting today went great! I had her read her favorite book and my favorite book to me, and she did pretty well. We also played a memory game, and she showed me around her classroom. She talked a lot more than at our first meeting and seems to be more comfortable with me!” “Before meeting my little, I never played the game Clue. But now, we play it almost every week and I'm actually starting to get the hang of it. I'm almost as addicted to it as she is! Also, I think it's really sweet that my little is unselfish and considers me when making decisions of what to do for the day. She always asks me first what player I want to be or what color of something before she picks, and sometimes when I ask her what she wants to do she will ask me what I want to do.” “Things are going great. We do a lot of arts and crafts, and I've taught her how to play many of the games, like Mancala. She had a lot of fun! We did homework last time, and we always have a lot of fun!” “I think that Big Brothers Big Sisters is a fun experience and a really good program. I enjoy spending time with my Little Sister and just making her smile. I like talking to her and drawing pictures with her. We share a common interest in basketball, and we like to be able to shoot hoops with each other.” Thanks to Mrs. Beth Richards, Southern Door 5K Teacher, who donated magnetic alphabet letters for our kids. Homework Help Tips Kids are more successful in school when parents take an active interest in their homework; it shows kids what they do is important. Of course, helping with homework shouldn't mean spending hours hunched over a desk. Parents can be supportive by demonstrating study and organization skills, explaining a tricky problem, or just encouraging kids to take a break. And who knows? Parents might even learn a thing or two! Here are some tips to guide the way: 1. Know the teachers and what they're looking for. Attend school events, such as parent-teacher conferences, to meet your child's teachers. Ask about their homework policies and how you should be involved. 2. Set up a homework-friendly area. Make sure kids have a well-lit place to complete homework. Keep supplies like paper, pencils, glue, scissors within reach. 3. Schedule a regular study time. Some kids work best in the afternoon, following a snack and play period; others may prefer to wait until after dinner. 4. Help them make a plan. On heavy homework nights or when there's an especially hefty assignment to tackle, encourage your child break up the work into manageable chunks. Create a work schedule for the night if necessary and take time for a 15-minute break every hour, if possible. 5. Keep distractions to a minimum. This means no TV, loud music or phone calls. (Occasionally, though, a phone call to a classmate about an assignment can be helpful.) 6. Make sure kids do their own work. They won't learn if they don't think for themselves and make their own mistakes. Parents can make suggestions and help with directions. But it's a kid's job to do the learning. 7. Be a motivator and monitor. Ask about assignments, quizzes and tests. Give encouragement, check completed homework and make yourself available for questions and concerns. 8. Set a good example. Do your kids ever see you diligently balancing your budget or reading a book? Kids are more likely to follow their parents' examples than their advice. 9. Praise their work and efforts. Post an aced test or art project on the refrigerator. Mention academic achievements to relatives. If there are continuing problems with homework, get help. Talk with your child's teacher. Some kids have trouble seeing the board and may need glasses; others might need an evaluation for a learning problem or attention disorder. 5 Congratulations Matches of the Month Our Outstanding Matches of the Month are Sponsored By: Chuck E. April Match of the Month Mentor’s Name: Carla Castro What are your favorite activities to do with each other? Youth’s Name: Ashley Sewing, baking, scrapbooking and visiting new places. Tell us about a funny moment you shared together. We were baking Turkey Cupcakes and were trying our hardest to make them perfect. We were pulling everything out of the cupboards to make them work. All of a sudden we looked around and started to laugh because we had made such a big mess in the kitchen! What are your upcoming plans for spring/summer/fall? We like to make a food or craft for each particular season. We also get out and do activities in the summer. How long have you been matched? What do you like about being matched? What community service/volunteering have you done together as a match? It will be 2 years in April. We both love doing arts & crafts. We rang bells for the Salvation Army and walked dogs for an area humane society. May Match of the Month Mentor’s Name: Garth Webster Youth’s Name: Dylan How long have you been matched? It will be 2 years in May What are your favorite activities/hobbies to do with each other? We like to play basketball and going to sporting events like Gamblers Hockey, football games, etc. One thing we’d like to do is go skating, we just haven’t found time yet. What are your upcoming plans for spring/summer/fall? Tell us about a funny moment you shared together. We want to play a lot of golf this summer. He became interested in the sport this past summer and wants to learn to become a better player. I’m confident he will do so. We also plan to volunteer for more community events like the Taste of the Town. We volunteered last year and had a blast. Earlier this year, we were the recipient of a very generous Packer Fan Tour package in which we got to stay at the Tundra Lodge, go to an autograph signing with Nick Perry, as well as attend the tailgate party and the Detroit Lions game. On the night of the game, Dylan didn’t have the warmest clothes to wear so I gave him some of mine. Here we were, marching into the stadium and Dylan’s pants were kind of falling down even though we had them strung as tight as we could. It was kind of funny, but he stayed warm. What community service/volunteering have you done together as a match? We volunteered at Taste of the Town and for three community feasts my [Garth’s] family hosts at a local church in Oneida. 6 Happy Anniversary New Matches 10 Years Jeffery Corson & Matthew Kong Moua & Samuel Dustin Thill & Dane Mackenzie Counard & Emily Samuel Mueller & William 6 Years Alyssa Dantoin & Haley Jake Rauwerdink & Ezekiel Kristin Mayer & April Dustin Dragotta & Roman Matt Rollin & Dylon 4 Years Edward Ehlert & Scot Shannon Ryerson & Kyeisha Kail Decker & Tate Teaghan Everard & Lindsay Brittany Schmelzer & Sophia Amanda Lamal & Taylor Kate Farrell & Bailey Ashley Schueller & Anessa Greg Rotherham & Eathan Chris Hagerstrom & Lizeth Hannah Schwefel & Jawahiriya Shawn Schmidt & Anthony KeAndre Hayward & Kamontay Ben & Janie Soodsma & Gabrehl 3 Years Rachael Henn & Chantell Maggie Swanson & Rose Mike Keene & Quentin Tyler Malcore & Drew Rebecca Vandertie & Sylvia Katie MacNeish & Grace David Martin & Austin Courtney VanHout & Kendal Kelly Selner & Angel Todd Mattison & Riley Sara Williams & Amanda 2 Years Jeremiah Merchak & Andrew Nicole Zawilinski & Isabell Carla Castro & Ashley David Mesa & Eddie Hillary Kline & Laurie Amanda Lang & Carly Garth Webster & Dylan 1 Year Kaitlyn Bouvette & Taylor Save the Date Monday, June 10, 2013 Thornberry Creek at Oneida Nicholas Conrad & Dakota Asha D'Cunha & Pa Kayla Hansford & Nevaeh Jen Jacobson & Rayne Brian Lautenbach & Amadeus We’re looking for volunteers to help on the day-of the event.
