CBS SPORTS NETWORK (DAVE RYAN & EVAN WASHBURN) SETTING THE SCENE Winners of six of its last seven games, the third-seeded and #18 nationally-ranked Lehigh men’s lacrosse team faces second seed and #14/15 Army Black Knights in the Patriot League Semifinals on Friday evening. Opening faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Loyola’s Ridley Athletic Complex as the Greyhounds are hosting both semifinal games Friday and Sunday’s championship game (which is set for 1 p.m.). All three games will air live nation-wide on CBS Sports Network with Dave Ryan and Evan Washburn on the call. Lehigh is coming off a 10-6 win over sixth-seeded Navy in Tuesday’s Patriot League Quarterfinals. Leading 6-5 in the fourth quarter, the Mountain Hawks scored four goals in 6:09 to erase any doubt. The Mountain Hawks scored all eight goals over two separate four-goal runs that totaled 8:46. Lehigh scored four goals in 2:37 in the second quarter along with the 4-0 fourth-quarter run. Four different Mountain Hawks posted multiple goals led by the first-career hat trick from junior Kurtis Kaunas. He also tied a career-high four points, originally set just 10 days earlier against Georgetown. Lehigh’s starting attackmen of juniors Dan Taylor and Patrick Corbett along with sophomore Reid Weber all scored two goals apiece while senior Matt Smith scored a big third-quarter goal to snap more than a 21-minute scoreless drought. Junior Matt Poillon posted a season-high 15 saves between the pipes, including seven-of-eight in the second quarter as the Mountain Hawks outscored the Leopards 4-1 to take a 5-3 halftime lead. Junior Dylan O’Shaughnessy posted a career-high four groundballs while adding three caused turnovers and senior Lukas Mikelinich had three groundballs and three caused turnovers. Senior Jimmy Cahill also had three groundballs and two caused turnovers. The Mountain Hawks beat Navy for a fifth straight time after breaking a 98-year drought against the Midshipmen in 2011. Lehigh has won 19 of its last 21 games against Patriot League foes with the only losses coming to Colgate during the 2012 regular season and earlier this season against Loyola. Lehigh improved to 10-0 this season when scoring double-figure goals and are just 2-4 when scoring single digits. Since a 6-5 loss at Army, the Mountain Hawks have reached double figures in six of their last seven games (all wins), averaging 13.1 goals in that span. Lehigh had been averaging just 8.8 through its first ninth (the ninth game being the loss at Army). Tuesday’s win helped Lehigh match its win total from a season ago (12) and gave the Mountain Hawks their fifth straight Patriot League Tournament victory. Friday’s matchup features the #1 defense in the nation (Army) against the #2 defense (Lehigh). In the first meeting, the Mountain Hawks were leading 5-3 after three quarters before the Black Knights scored three unanswered in the fourth for the 6-5 victory. This marks the second time in the past three seasons that Lehigh and Army face-off in the Patriot League Semifinals on a neutral field. The second-seeded Mountain Hawks beat the third-seeded Black Knights in 2012 at Colgate by a 13-7 final. MEDIA INFORMATION Men’s Lacrosse Contact:. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Cassese’s impact has been immediate in his short time, leading the Mountain Hawks to backto-back Patriot League Championships. The two-time defending champs went 14-2 in 2012 and won their first-ever tournament title to advance to the program’s first NCAA Tournament. Lehigh followed that up with a 12-5 campaign in 2013, winning both the Regular Season and Tournament Championship. In 2012, Cassese led the Mountain Hawks to a school-record 14 wins, a program record nine-game winning streak and their highest-ever national ranking; Lehigh came in at #4 nationally in the final Coaches Poll following the regular season. The excitement around the program has never been higher as Lehigh finished 10th in the final Coaches Poll of 2013, in or near the top 10 for the last two seasons. Following a home opening loss to Villanova in 2012, Lehigh promptly won nine straight games and 13-of-14 to advance to the NCAA Tournament as the #7 seed. The Mountain Hawks hosted eventual National Finalist Maryland and gave the Terps their toughest fight on their road to the title game. Despite falling down 6-1 in the first half, Lehigh responded with seven straight goals in front of a standing room only crowd of 2,278 at the Ulrich Sports Complex (and in front of a national audience on ESPNU). Lehigh posted an impressive 8-3 record against nationally-ranked foes. That included a big 9-8 win at #4 North Carolina in March, propelling the Mountain Hawks into the national polls for the first time. Lehigh ended a number of long droughts, defeating UNC for the first time since 1951, Yale for the first time since 1918 and Penn State for the first time since 1971. Lehigh owned the nation’s #2 scoring defense (only behind Notre Dame), holding opponents to only 6.81 goals per game. The Mountain Hawks picked up their first shutout in 40 years with a 13-0 triumph over Manhattan, allowed only two goals to VMI and five or fewer to Penn State, Navy, Holy Cross, Penn and Saint Joseph’s. Cassese was named Patriot League Coach of the Year while freshman Matt Poillon became Lehigh’s first-ever Goalkeeper of the Year. Eight cracked the All-Patriot League Team, tied for most in school history and the most in Coach Cassese’s tenure. After six games in 2013, the Mountain Hawks stood at 3-3 and was just 5-4 after nine. The team responded in a big way, winning seven straight games to finish undefeated in Patriot League play and earn the right to host the league tournament. Lehigh went on to dominate Bucknell on its home turf (11-5) for its second straight championship. The awards continued to roll in for the Mountain Hawks as Poillon was named Patriot League Goalie of the Year for a second straight season and a school-record four players were named USILA All-Americans, breaking the record of three set a season prior. In addition, the Mountain Hawks placed a league best three players on the Academic All-Patriot League Team. Lehigh saw three of its players drafted by Major League Lacrosse teams in 2013: Dante Fantoni (Denver), Noah Molnar (Rochester) and David DiMaria (Boston). In addition, Mike Noone (Ohio) and Ryan Snyder (Denver) signed contracts following the season. They joined Cameron and Roman Lao-Gosney (Hamilton) in the professional ranks. On a personal level, Cassese continues to make his mark on the U.S. Lacrosse scene as he’s coached the United States in Stars & Stripes Weekend and Champion Challenge each of the last two years. In February, Cassese was named an assistant coach for the 2014 U.S. men’s national team, joining a staff led by former Navy head coach Richie Meade. Cassese will serve as one of three assistant coaches along with Dave Pietramala (Johns Hopkins) and Jeff Tambroni (Penn State). The 2011 season saw Cassese lead the Mountain Hawks to their first Patriot League Tournament appearance since 2006. Lehigh got off to a quick 3-1 start, which included a 14-10 triumph over Navy, the program’s first victory over the Midshipmen in nearly 100 years. The Mountain Hawks jumped squarely into the national lacrosse picture in 2011 by not only qualifying for the Patriot League postseason, but also proving they could compete with anyone in the country. Lehigh played an increasingly tough schedule in ’11 and wouldn’t back away from the challenge. All nine of the team’s losses came against ranked opponents, with seven coming by a combined 17 goals. The Mountain Hawks nearly topped a pair of NCAA Tournament qualifiers (Villanova and Bucknell), falling by a single goal each time. They also took a ranked Penn State squad to overtime, just one week after the Nittany Lions dominated eventual CAA Champion Delaware. The up-and-coming Mountain Hawks posted the nation’s eighth biggest improvement in 2011, according to LaxPower.com’s computer rankings, which takes into account many of the factors used by the NCAA Tournament selection committee. Other highlights included defeating MAAC Finalist Detroit Mercy on the road while winning three-of-four in one stretch in late March. In that stretch was a convincing 13-7 win over America East Tournament qualifier Binghamton. A young Mountain Hawk squad will graduate only eight seniors and return six of Lehigh’s eight All-League performers in 2013 as the anticipation and excitement around the program continues to rise. Cassese has mentored an impressive array of offensive talent, led by one of college lacrosse’s most prolific scoring duos of David DiMaria and Dante Fantoni, who combined for 99 points in 2011 and 90 in 2012. They’re a big reason why Lehigh’s attack unit was ranked 10th by Inside Lacrosse in the 2013 Face-Off Yearbook. In his first four years at Lehigh, Cassese mentored a total of nine All-Patriot League honorees, including four in 2011. Faceoff specialist Ryan Snyder cracked the First Team after winning 61.6 percent of his draws and scooping a Patriot League record 118 groundballs. Jonathan Stumpf was not only named to the Second Team, but also earned endless other academic and athletic honors. He became Lehigh’s first-ever CoSIDA Academic All-American while being named a Lowe’s Senior First Team All-American, USILA Scholar All-American and Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Stumpf (along with teammate Will Scudder) also played in the USILA North-South All-Star Game where he netted the eventual game-winning goal for the South. During the fall of 2009, Cassese was named to the 2010 United States Men’s National Lacrosse Team, traveling to Manchester, England in July. That marked the third time Cassese earned a spot on the National Team. Just months later, he worked with the U.S. National Team as the squad’s head coach. In October, he led Team USA to a win over Harvard. Then in January, 2011, Cassese coached the United States to a 12-7 win over No. 7 Notre Dame in the Champion Challenge at the ESPN Wide World of Sports. Cassese’s players have been involved in US Lacrosse as well as defenseman Ty Souders tried out for the U.S. Under-19 Team as part of a three-day training camp at UMBC. Recent graduates Cameron and Roman Lao-Gosney have also participated in numerous scrimmages for Team USA, beginning with the Capital Lacrosse Classic on Oct. 7, 2012. In his first season as the Mountain Hawks’ leader in 2008, Cassese led a young Lehigh squad to more home wins and more overall victories than the season prior. The Brown and White also ranked in the top 10 nationally in man-down defense and in the top 25 in scoring defense. Success continued into 2009 campaign, highlighted by back-to-back wins over ranked foes; the Mountain Hawks defeated #16 Army and #20 St. John’s in succession. In 2010, the Mountain Hawks posted their first winning overall record since 2006 by going 8-7. A resilient group, Lehigh went a perfect 3-0 in overtime games, including wins over #9 Villanova and #19 Lafayette in consecutive weeks to close out the season. Villanova marked the Mountain Hawks’ first top-10 win since downing #7 Georgetown in 1997. Fantoni scored both overtime game-winners to set the tone for what has been an impressive career to date. One of the most decorated student-athletes in Duke history, Cassese served as an assistant coach at his alma mater from 2005-07, helping lead the Blue Devils to the 2007 National Championship Game. He also served as Duke’s interim head coach for part of the summer of 2006. Prior to Duke, Cassese spent one season at Stony Brook as an assistant where he directed the nation’s top extra man offense and helped the Seawolves to a 10-6 record in 2004. A two-time captain and three-time All-ACC selection while at Duke, Cassese helped lead the Blue Devils to three NCAA Tournament appearances and a pair of ACC Championships during his collegiate career. Cassese earned All-America honors on three separate occasions, including First Team accolades in 2002 and 2003. Cassese, who scored 80 goals and handed out 38 assists in his career, was a two-time Tewaaraton Trophy finalist and garnered ACC Player of the Year honors in 2001. In 2002, Cassese was the recipient of the Lt. Donald MacLaughlin, Jr. Award as the nation’s top midfielder. An accomplished player on the international level as well, Cassese helped the United States to the gold medal at the 2002 International Lacrosse Federation World Championships. He was also a member of the United States team that placed second at the 2006 ILF World Championships in London, Ontario. Cassese was the second overall selection in the 2003 Major League Lacrosse Draft by the Rochester Rattlers. Among his professional accomplishments are a pair of MLL Rookie of the Week honors and a spot on the 2005 All-Star Team. Cassese, who was traded to the Philadelphia Barrage during the summer of 2007, helped lead his new team to the 2007 Major League Lacrosse Championship, as well as a spot in Championship Weekend in 2008. Cassese was signed by the Boston Cannons prior to the 2009 MLL season and appeared in 12 games during the regular season while helping lead them into the postseason. A native of Port Jefferson Station, New York and graduate of Comsewogue High School, Cassese earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Duke in 2003. He garnered USILA Scholar All-America and ACC Academic Honor Roll honors as well as the ACC’s Weaver-James-Corrigan Honorary Award for outstanding athletic and academic achievement. Cassese and his wife, Katie Granson Cassese who attended nearby Freedom High School, were married in Bethlehem in December of 2006. Katie is currently a Realtor for RE/MAX Central in the Lehigh Valley. They had their first child, Drew Cassese, in July of 2011, and their second child Anna in August of 2013. The Mountain Hawks broke a 2-2 tie with a 4-1 second quarter on their way to a fifth straight season opening victory. The hat tricks were the first of both Ferraro and Weber’s careers and fifth by Corbett. Juniors Jack Bogorowski, Kurtis Kaunas and Dan Taylor along with sophomore Alex Eaton added Lehigh’s other goals. Ferraro added an assist for a game (and career) high four points. Senior Matt Smith dished a pair of assists. Sophomore Tripp Telesco had three groundballs and a caused turnover to help lead the defense while fellow close defenseman Lukas Mikelinich had two and Ty Souders one. Goals from Ferraro and Corbett gave Lehigh an early 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the game. Furman responded with goals at 5:29 and 4:28 to even the score after one quarter of play. Taylor broke the tie at 8:52 of the second quarter before Corbett made it 4-2 just over a minute later. After Kaunas made it three straight Lehigh goals, Furman pulled within 5-3 but Corbett scored her third of the first half with just seven seconds left on the clock. Junior Ryan Buttenbaum won 5-of-6 third-quarter faceoffs while the Mountain Hawks held a 13-3 edge in groundballs to help gain separation. After the Paladins pulled within 6-4, Lehigh scored four straight to end the third quarter capped off by two in a row from Weber, making it 10-4 after 45 minutes of play. The success continued in the fourth as the Mountain Hawks outscored the Paladins 3-2 for the 13-6 final. Lehigh held a 42-15 edge in shots and 30-19 in groundballs. Buttenbaum won 13-of-22 faceoffs while senior Matt Poillon made six saves. Furman goalie Frazer Kinsley was strong, making 12 saves including nine in the first half. Graham Dabbs and Clay Adams tallied two goals apiece for Furman, which was playing its first-ever Division I lacrosse game. The Paladins are coached by former Navy coach Richie Meade, who is also head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team. Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese is one of Meade’s assistants. “I was very impressed by Coach Meade,” Cassese said. “He had his guys ready to play. They played like a Coach Meade coached team. They were ready to play. Their goalie played well. That was a big difference in the game. We could have been up four or five goals, but had to work really hard to be up three.” BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Tied at two in the first quarter, the #17/19 Lehigh men’s lacrosse team scored 11 of the next 13 goals to erase any doubt and beat Marquette going away, 13-6 on Saturday afternoon. Senior Ryan Buttenbaum won 17-of-21 faceoffs and the offense converted those opportunities, led by junior Patrick Corbett who tied a career-high four goals. The Mountain Hawks improve to 2-0 on the season heading into a showdown with #20 Villanova. “I thought our guys did a good job being ready to play, especially on the offensive end,” said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. “We had some good sets and really carried the tempo early. Defensively, we weren’t on high alert in the first quarter, giving up two goals on the interior of our defense. Once that settled down, we played a ton of offense because Ryan Buttenbaum was winning so many faceoffs. The defense got a chance to settle in a little bit and the offense played pretty well in the third quarter.” Senior Dan Taylor added four points behind two goals and two assists. Junior Kurtis Kaunas set a career high with three points via a goal and two assists while eleven other Mountain Hawks posted a single point. Senior Ty Souders led the defense with four groundballs and two caused turnovers. Buttenbaum scooped a game and career-high 12 groundballs, also setting a career high for faceoffs won. Seniors Matt Risk and Cody Newton got the scoring started, scoring at 12:39 and 11:45 to give Lehigh a 2-0 advantage. “It’s a theme for our program; when guys graduate, the next wave of guys steps up,” said Cassese. “These are guys who might be relatively inexperienced, but they’re not freshmen. They’re sophomores, they’re junior , they’re seniors, they’re guys who have been around the block a time or two. The expectation is that they’ll step up and we won’t miss a beat.” Marquette responded with goals at 9:13 and 7:13, but Corbett scored his first goal of the afternoon, off a feed from Kaunas, to make it 3-2 after one quarter of play. The Mountain Hawks controlled most of the second quarter. After a Taylor goal at 10:10, junior Alan Henderson scooped the groundball off the ensuing faceoff and found Corbett who made it 5-2 just eight seconds later. Goals from juniors Klay Heston and Pat Dougherty made it 7-2 before the Golden Eagles pulled within 7-3 at the half. Marquette scored less than two minutes into the third quarter, but Lehigh answered with six straight goals bridging the rest of the third and midway through the fourth. Junior long pole Dylan O’Shaughnessy got the scoring started on an unsettled situation then Taylor followed. Corbett scored twice in 18 seconds for his third and fourth goals and with it, his second straight hat trick and sixth of his career. Kaunas added a third-quarter goal to make it 12-4 after 45 minutes of play. Senior Jimmy Cahill made it 13-4 at 10:05 of the fourth quarter before Marquette answered with the final two goals. Blaine Flemin’s tally at 6:00 ended the Golden Eagles’ drought of 22:31 without a goal. Lehigh’s defense stood tall to allow just six goals for a second straight week. Lehigh held a 38-27 edge in shots and 36-18 in groundballs. Junior Matt Poillon was strong, making nine saves while Marquette goalie J.J. Sagl finished with four. His goal avoided a fourth overtime period and gave the Mountain Hawks a thrilling 7-6 victory on a cold Sunday afternoon. A game that saw 83 combined shots and 16 extra man opportunities saw Lehigh score five of its goals in a 12:38 stretch in the third quarter. The Wildcats responded with the final three goals of regulation, but it was Kaunas who had the final answer. “You had both teams going extra man in overtime, goalies making spectacular saves, both teams hitting pipes and crossbars,” said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. “You had a lot of mistakes, a lot of errors, but the guys played really hard on both sides of the ball. I give Villanova credit; it’s their first game. They played hard and well, especially on the defensive end. I thought our guys did too. It shows with the amount of turnovers there were, but I attribute a lot of that to the defenses.” Both defenses impressed as Lehigh caused 17 of Villanova’s 29 turnovers while the Wildcats caused 13 of the Mountain Hawks’ 24. Sophomore Tripp Telesco had a monster day with a career-high seven groundballs and seven caused turnovers, including two groundballs and two caused turnovers in the second overtime alone. Senior close defensemen Ty Souders (career-high six groundballs, two caused turnovers) and Lukas Mikelinich (five groundballs, one caused turnover) were stellar as well. After Villanova took a 3-1 lead early in the second quarter, Lehigh didn’t allow a goal for the next 20:19. The Mountain Hawks shut-out the Wildcats over the game’s final 23:14. Junior Matt Poillon was a big part, finishing with 12 saves including eight after halftime as he improves to 3-0 and an eye-popping 28-6 in his collegiate career. With the win, the Mountain Hawks improve to 3-0 for the first time since the 2000 season. Lehigh has now won two straight and three of its last five against the Wildcats. The victory marks Lehigh’s eighth straight regular season win and sixth consecutive at home dating back to last season. Sophomore Reid Weber led the offense with four points behind two goals and two assists. Junior Dan Taylor had three (two goals one assist). Villanova’s Kevin O’Neil opened the scoring at 13:19 of the first quarter, but Weber took a feed from Taylor and evened the score just under six minutes later. The Wildcats responded with the next two goals. Lehigh was unable to score for the final 22:21 of the first half as Villanova held a 3-1 lead after 30 minutes of play. Senior Jimmy Cahill opened the second-half scoring just 21 seconds into the third quarter. Just over seven minutes later, Taylor answered with his first of the day, using a sneaky behind-the-back shot from a tough angle to beat Villanova goalie Dan Willis. Taylor added a second goal just 1:25 later to give the Mountain Hawks a 4-3 lead. Weber scored his second just 46 seconds after that to make it 5-3 at 5:04 of the third quarter. Junior Dylan O’Shaughnessy rounded out the run with his second goal in as many games, making it 6-3 late in the third. However, the Wildcats scored with 1:25 left in the third quarter and added two early fourth-quarter goals to deadlock the score at six. Both teams had several chances in the fourth quarter and the overtime periods. The goaltenders combined for four overtime saves, pipes were hit and eight turnovers were committed (five for Villanova and three for Lehigh). In the end, with the Mountain Hawks holding for the final shot, Taylor made a pass to Kaunas, who made a dodge to his left and beat Willis low for the 7-6 final. Lehigh held a 46-37 edge in shots and 45-44 advantage in groundballs. Senior Ryan Buttenbaum won 10-of-18 faceoffs at the X, scooping four groundballs. Each goalie finished with 12 saves. BOSTON - The Lehigh men’s lacrosse team used a 7-0 run bridging the second and beginning of the third quarters to win its fourth straight Patriot League opener as the Mountain Hawks topped Boston University 10-7 on Saturday. Junior Patrick Corbett and sophomore Reid Weber scored two goals apiece as Lehigh improves to 4-0 for the first time since 1997. “I want to credit BU for playing a great game today,” said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. “They really showed up and took it to us for a good part of the game. They won the first 20 minutes and the last 15 minutes of the game. Fortunately for us, we were able to win 25 minutes towards the middle part of the game and that proved to be the difference.” Junior Alan Henderson posted one goal and career highs in assists (3) and points (4). Five other Mountain Hawks scored one goal apiece, including first-career goals from freshman Ray Mastroianni, sophomore Chris Appell and senior Ryan Buttenbaum. Junior long-stick midfielder Dylan O’Shaughnessy added his third goal in as many games. “We’re happy to get the win,” said Cassese. “It’s always nice to win; it doesn’t matter how you do it. We’re happy to be 4-0 and we’re happy to be 1-0 in the Patriot League, but I can honestly say that as the leader of this program, that I am not content with our overall level of play today.” Sophomore and reigning Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week Tripp Telesco had three groundballs and two caused turnovers to help pace the defense. After the Terriers’ Pat Myers opened the scoring at 13:25 of the first quarter, Buttenbaum answered just eight seconds later off the ensuing faceoff. Corbett scored his first at 12:13, but the Terriers scored the next three goals spanning more than 15 minutes until Lehigh scored its third early in the second quarter. Eaton took a pass from Risk and finished to pull within 4-3 at 11:36 of the second quarter. That sparked a 7-0 run as Weber followed at 9:43 then Mastroianni gave Lehigh a 5-4 lead at the 7:55 mark. O’Shaughnessy rounded out the first-half scoring at 4:58 of the second quarter. After almost 10 minutes of scoreless third-quarter action, Appell made it 9-4 at 5:26. Henderson picked up his third assist on that goal. The Terriers answered just 35 seconds later before Henderson made it 10-5 with 3:29 left in the third quarter. That marked Lehigh’s last goal of the game as Terriers goalie Christian Carson made five fourth-quarter saves, allowing his offense to score two goals and pull within 10-7. Boston U couldn’t pull any closer, however, as the Mountain Hawks held on for their 13th straight win over a Patriot League foe (dating back to 2012) and ninth straight regular season victory (dating back to last season). Lehigh held a 35-32 edge in final shots while the Terriers had a 25-24 advantage in groundballs. Carson finished with 16 saves for the Terriers while junior Matt Poillon had 10. The Mountain Hawks return home next Saturday (Mar. 1) to host #9/10 ranked Loyola in a huge early-season Patriot League matchup. Opening faceoff is set for 12 p.m. “This is a big week for us,” said Cassese. “We need to continue to search for people who want to step up. We need to continue to search for ways to get better. We are about to play a team that could be considered one of the hottest teams in the country. They are 3-1 and are a controversial last second goal vs. UVA away from being 4-0. Loyola is an excellent team. We’ll need to be at our best if we hope to compete. We are about to find out exactly what type of team we have and what we’re made of.” Lehigh Athletic Media Relations • 641 Taylor Street, Bethlehem, PA • Phone 610-758-3174 • Fax 610-758-4407 2014 LEHIGH MEN’S LACROSSE • GAME 17: #18 LEHIGH VS. #14/15 ARMY • PATRIOT LEAGUE SEMIFINALS • APRIL 25, 2014 • PAGE 19 GAME 5•MAR. 1, 2014 BETHLEHEM, Pa. #7/8 LOYOLA 14, #14 LEHIGH 7 GAME 6•MAR. 8, 2014 LEWISBURG, Pa. #16 LEHIGH 9, BUCKNELL 3 BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Tied 3-3 after one quarter, #7/8 Loyola scored all four second-quarter goals to create separation as the Greyhounds downed the #14 Lehigh men’s lacrosse team 14-7 on Saturday at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Sophomore Reid Weber led the way with a goal and two assists for his third straight multi-point game. Four Mountain Hawks caused two turnovers apiece while junior Matt Poillon made 11 saves between the pipes. The loss snaps a six-game home winning streak, nine-game regular season winning streak and 13-game winning streak against Patriot League foes. “Loyola played a full 60-minute game,” said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. “They played well on offense, they played well on defense. They got great faceoff play and great goalie play. Typically when you do that, you’re going to win the game.” Junior Patrick Corbett got the scoring started just 1:59 into the game and finished with two on the afternoon to up his season total to a team-leading 11. Four other Mountain Hawks tallied a single goal while six finished with a single point. Sophomore Tripp Telesco posted three groundballs and two caused turnovers and senior Lukas Mikelinich had two and two, respectively. Short-stick defensive midfielders Jimmy Cahill and Sam Lawrence caused two turnovers each. “I thought our guys battled hard and were ready to play,” said Cassese. “I don’t think we executed as well as we could have. A lot of that was because of them as opposed to us.” Corbett scooped a groundball off a Jack Runkel save and beat the senior goaltender to make it 1-0 in the early going. Loyola responded with three straight goals, but a transition opportunity led to a nifty goal from junior Kurtis Kaunas. Sophomore Alex Eaton tacked on an unassisted tally at 51 seconds of the first quarter to make it 3-3 after 15 minutes of play. The Greyhounds controlled the second quarter as Nikko Pontrello scored two man-up goals, with an even strength goal in between, for the natural hat trick. That gave Loyola a 6-3 lead at 9:10 of the second quarter. Brian Schultz gave the Greyhounds a 7-3 advantage heading into halftime. Weber scored the first goal of the second half, but Loyola responded with four straight to take an 11-4 lead after three quarters. The Mountain Hawks wouldn’t go away quietly as Corbett scored at 12:55 and sophomore Billy Oppenheimer added his first in a Lehigh uniform at 6:23 to pull within 11-6. However, Loyola scored three of the game’s final four goals for the 14-7 final. Loyola held a 33-30 edge in shots and 27-22 in groundballs. Both teams took care of the ball, turning the ball over just 11 times each. Poillon’s 11 saves came across Runkel who impressed with 13. “I think this game exposed our weaknesses. Loyola is a really good team,” said Cassese. “Whenever you play a good and well-coached team, they’re going to exploit your weaknesses. I think today, we learned a lot about what those are and hopefully they’re pretty obvious for our guys. If they’re not, they will be after our film session tomorrow. We have to start cranking away on getting those weaknesses better and hopefully turn them into strengths.” LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell scored first, but wouldn’t score for another 50:28 as the #16 Lehigh men’s lacrosse team scored nine straight goals on its way to a dominant 9-3 victory on Saturday. In a rematch of the 2013 Patriot League Championship game, the Mountain Hawks (5-1, 2-1 Patriot League) held the Bison (2-3, 1-2) to just 20 shots on the way to their fourth straight win over Bucknell. The Bison turned the ball over 15 times to Lehigh’s seven, and when they could get a quality shot off, Lehigh junior goalie Matt Poillon was there to make the save. “I’m proud of our guys,” said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. “This was our best team effort of the early season. It wasn’t a complete 60 minutes, but it was an outstanding effort overall.” Junior Dan Taylor led the offense with four goals to tie a career high. Classmate Patrick Corbett scored twice while sophomore Alex Eaton added a career-high two goals as well. Senior Ryan Buttenbaum was strong at the faceoff X, winning 11-of-15 with seven groundballs. “I thought our faceoff personnel did a nice job today,” said Cassese. “Not only Ryan Buttenbaum in the middle, but also our wing play was terrific all day. We got a nice spark from Ray Mastroianni on the wing (four GBs).” The Mountain Hawks caused nine of Bucknell’s turnovers led by a career-high three caused turnovers from sophomore long-stick midfielder Casey Eidenshink. Sophomore Tripp Telesco continued his strong play with two groundballs and two caused turnovers. He now has 15 groundballs and 13 caused turnovers over his last four games. “The defensive effort was solid all around,” said Cassese. “Coach Brendan Callahan had the fellas ready to play today and it was a full unit effort from start to finish. They played our style, with great composure, and full support and trust of one another. It was fun to watch.” Bucknell got on the board early as Thomas Flibotte made it 1-0 at 10:10. The Mountain Hawks only got five first-quarter shots off and couldn’t find the back of the net as the Bison maintained its lead into the second quarter. Taylor scored his first of the afternoon (from sophomore Reid Weber) to make it 1-1 at 10:49 of the second. Weber took a feed from sophomore Billy Oppenheimer and made it 2-1 just over four minutes later before Taylor added Lehigh’s third straight with 3:55 on the clock. Taylor single-handedly gave the Mountain Hawks a 5-1 advantage with goals at 13:59 and 11:28 of the third quarter, then after more than eight minutes of scoreless action, Lehigh scored three times in the final 2:51 to take a commanding 8-1 lead after three quarters of play. Eaton scored twice, including one with four seconds on the clock. Corbett tallied an extra man goal at 8:27 of the fourth from Oppenheimer, who dished his third assist of the afternoon. Bucknell finally solved Lehigh’s defense, breaking a 50:28 scoreless drought with a goal at 4:42. The Bison added a goal at 1:45 with the Mountain Hawks’ backups in for the 9-3 final. Lehigh held a dominant 37-20 shot advantage and 36-24 edge in groundballs. The Mountain Hawks won 12-of-16 faceoffs led by Buttenbaum’s 11-of-15. Poillon made six saves before being replaced by sophomore Steve Brodeur who stopped 1-of-2 over the final 3:41. Bucknell goalie Sam Grinberg made 15 stops. Lehigh turned the ball over 21 times and could only muster 17 shots (along with five shots on goal) against a physical Bulldogs’ defense. Juniors Alan Henderson and Jack Bogorowski scored the Mountain Hawks’ goals. Lehigh falls to 5-2 on the season while Yale improves to 3-1. “Give a lot of credit to Yale. They took the game to us today,” said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. “They played harder, they played tougher. They played with more of a chip on their shoulder than we did. Our guys just failed to show up. It wasn’t our Lehigh team, unfortunately. I told [Yale] Coach Shay they might have gotten more out of practicing than playing Lehigh tonight.” Lehigh only had three first-quarter shots as it struggled against the Yale defense from the onset. The Bulldogs opened the scoring at 9:00 of the first quarter and added goals at 7:41 and 3:45 to make it 3-0 after one quarter of play. Yale took a 4-0 lead just 21 seconds into the second quarter, but Henderson fired a shot past Bulldogs goalie Eric Natale to pull within 4-1 at the 11:28 mark. However, Yale’s Dylan Levings won the ensuing faceoff and went all the way for his first goal of the season to make it 5-1 just nine seconds later. The Bulldogs carried the momentum, scoring five more goals to take a 10-1 lead in the fourth quarter. Bogorowski scored a man-up goal at 2:30 of the fourth quarter to account for the 10-2 final. Yale held a 39-17 edge in shots and 25-22 advantage in groundballs. Junior Matt Poillon made seven saves, allowing nine goals before being replaced by sophomore Steve Brodeur, who stopped 3-of-4 shots sent his way. One bright spot was senior Ryan Buttenbaum, who won 7-of-12 faceoffs with two groundballs. Freshman Casey McAdam also won 2-of-3 draws. “We try to treat every game like it’s the most important one,” said Cassese. “We have a team motto that says 1-0. Unfortunately our guys weren’t very focused on going 1-0 today and Yale was. They deserved to win the game and they deserved to win in a lopsided fashion.” BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following Tuesday’s loss at #17 Yale, the #14/15 Lehigh men’s lacrosse team responded in a big way, defeating Navy 13-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Junior Dan Taylor paced the offense with a career-high five goals and eight points while senior Lukas Mikelinich held the nation’s fifth-leading point scorer Sam Jones without a point. “Tuesday’s game at Yale was a tough one for our team and our program,” said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. “We talked a lot about what happened on Tuesday. Our job as coaches and the team is to make sure it never happens again. I thought the energy was good today and the guys were excited to get back out there. We were fortunate enough to have a game only a few days after that output.” The 11-goal win marked Lehigh’s largest-ever margin of victory over the Midshipmen. The previous largest was five goals set each of the last two seasons. Lehigh has now won four straight over Navy after snapping a 98-year losing streak against the Midshipmen in 2010. Lehigh improves to 6-2 on the season and 3-1 in Patriot League play while Navy falls to 3-4 and 2-2 in the league. Over their last two Patriot League games, the Mountain Hawks have allowed just five goals (three to Bucknell and two to Navy). Lehigh gave up just one even strength goal on Saturday and none over the game’s final 51:59. Junior Patrick Corbett added his seventh-career hat trick while sophomore Reid Weber dished a career-high four assists. In total, the starting attack combined for eight goals and seven assists. Junior Klay Heston scored a career-high two goals while senior Matt Smith and Jimmy Cahill scored a goal and sophomore Billy Oppenheimer had a goal and assist. Mikelinich finished with a groundball and two caused turnovers while sophomore Tripp Telesco had three groundballs and three caused turnovers and senior Ty Souders posted two groundballs and a caused turnover. Junior Sam Lawrence was strong at defensive midfield, finishing with a groundball and three caused turnovers. Junior goalie Matt Poillon impressed with 10 saves, allowing just two goals. Cahill opened the scoring just over a minute into the game, converting a transition opportunity to make it 1-0. Corbett scored his first at the 11:02 mark, but Navy pulled within 2-1 at 6:59. That marked Navy’s last goal in over 30 minutes as Taylor scored two straight to give Lehigh a 5-1 lead, sparking the Mountain Hawks to eight straight goals. Lehigh took a 5-1 lead after one quarter then goals from Smith and Corbett made it 7-1 at the half. Taylor, Oppenheimer and Corbett made it 10-1 before Navy’s T.J. Hanzsche scored his second goal of the day, on the extra man, to make it 10-2 at 5:05 of the fourth quarter. Taylor came back with the next two goals and an assist on Lehigh’s final goal - a man-up goal scored by Heston - to account for the 13-2 final. Lehigh held a 32-26 edge in shots and 27-26 advantage in groundballs. Senior Ryan Buttenbaum was 8-of-17 at the faceoff X while freshman Casey McAdam was 1-of-2. After Poillon made 10 saves, sophomore Steve Brodeur came in to make one over the final 5:21. John Connors made six stops for the Mids. The Mountain Hawks return to action when they travel to Army next Saturday (Mar. 22) to face the Black Knights. Army dropped a slim 7-6 final to #2 Loyola on Saturday. “They played Loyola a whole lot tougher than we did,” said Cassese. “Army is a team we know very well. It’s a team that will be fired up to play Lehigh in its home stadium. We’ll need to have a great week of practice and we’ll need to make sure that we’re ready to play.” Lehigh Athletic Media Relations • 641 Taylor Street, Bethlehem, PA • Phone 610-758-3174 • Fax 610-758-4407 2014 LEHIGH MEN’S LACROSSE • GAME 17: #18 LEHIGH VS. #14/15 ARMY • PATRIOT LEAGUE SEMIFINALS • APRIL 25, 2014 • PAGE 21 GAME 9•MAR. 22, 2014 WEST POINT, N.Y. LEHIGH 13, MONMOUTH 7 WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army scored half its six goals in a 5:59 span to turn a 5-3 fourth-quarter deficit into a 6-5 lead as the Black Knights held off the #17/20 Lehigh men’s lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon in Michie Stadium. Junior Dan Taylor scored three of Lehigh’s five goals while junior Matt Poillon made nine saves in goal, but the Black Knight’s nation-leading defense allowed just 22 shots on the afternoon. The Mountain Hawks struggled at the faceoff X, which proved critical as Army won 12-of-15 draws and held a 29-15 edge in groundballs and 36-22 advantage in shots. Lehigh made the most of its 10 first-half shots, putting seven on goal including four that beat Army goalie Sam Somers. However, Lehigh only scored one second-half goal and none over the game’s final 22:25. Taylor posted his ninth-career hat trick and third in the last four games while sophomore Alex Eaton had a goal and assist. Junior Kurtis Kaunas scored as well. Senior Ty Souders led the defense with three groundballs and a caused turnover. Kaunas got the scoring started at 10:45 of the first quarter then Taylor added his first of the day (from Eaton) at 6:19. Taylor took a feed from sophomore Reid Weber and beat Somers to make it 3-0 at 11:17 of the second quarter. After more than 21 minutes without a goal, Will Mazzone got Army on the scoreboard at 8:56 of the second then John Glesener made it 3-2 just 29 seconds later. Glesener’s second straight goal tied the score at three at 5:42, but Taylor quickly answered just 12 seconds later to make it 4-3 Lehigh, which stood as the halftime score. Eaton scored the only third-quarter goal, but after another scoreless drought eclipsing 21 minutes, the Black Knights scored twice in a 2:01 span early in the fourth to tie the score. Henry White then tallied his first of the season to give Army a 6-5 lead with 7:54 still remaining. The Mountain Hawks had their chances to pull even, but couldn’t put another one past Somers as they dropped their first road Patriot League game since April, 2012 at Colgate. Poillon was strong throughout, making nine saves including six in the first half. Somers made seven stops for the Black Knights. BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Five Mountain Hawks finished with multiple points, freshman Casey McAdam won 17-of-23 faceoffs and sophomore Tripp Telesco led the defense with five groundballs and five caused turnovers as the Lehigh men’s lacrosse team topped Monmouth 13-7 on a chilly Wednesday evening at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Sophomore Reid Weber led the offense with a career-high four goals and five points while junior Patrick Corbett posted his eighth-career hat trick as the Mountain Hawks improve to 7-3 on the season. “I am proud of the way the guys finished tonight,” said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. “We’ve been struggling in the fourth quarter a little bit and our stats will show that. I was happy to be able to win the fourth quarter, and the third quarter as well. It was a good second half for us.” Lehigh extended a 7-5 halftime lead to 10-6 after three quarters and 13-7 at the final horn. “The guys played with good energy,” said Cassese. “I thought Monmouth played with good energy as well. It was a pretty evenly-matched game in the first half, but our guys rose to the occasion. I think some of our experience came to the forefront. It’s good to get the win.” Sophomore Alex Eaton set a career high with four points (two goals, two assists) while junior Alan Henderson had a career-high two goals and assist. Junior Dan Taylor scored a goal and added two assists. McAdam was dominant at the faceoff X, going a perfect 10-of-10 in the second half to help Lehigh pull away. He finished the evening with 12 groundballs. “I’m really proud of Casey,” said Cassese. “He had a tough go against Army on Saturday and I know that’s been eating at him. To go back with him and have him with this output tonight is great for a young guy, to get rid of that taste. He did a great job, not only winning the draw, but also creating some offense and unsettled situations. I am proud of his effort. Our faceoff unit in general was great today.” Along with Telesco’s big night, senior Ty Souders had four groundballs and a caused turnover as Lehigh’s starting close defense collected 11 groundballs and six caused turnovers on the evening. Taylor got the scoring started at 13:19 of the first quarter off a feed from Eaton. Weber scored his first of the day just 1:30 later, but Monmouth responded with two straight goals to pull even. Two goals in a 28-second span, from junior Kurtis Kaunas and another from Weber, made it 4-2 after one quarter. Monmouth pulled within 4-3 less than a minute into the second quarter, but goals from Weber and Henderson made it 6-3. However, Monmouth answered with two of the final three first-half goals to pull within 7-5 after 30 minutes of play. Lehigh came out of halftime with a vengeance, scoring the first two in the first 2:29 to take a 9-5 lead. Monmouth answered, but the Mountain Hawks erased any doubt by scoring three straight bridging the third and fourth quarters to take a 12-6 lead. Monmouth scored at 6:22 of the fourth, but Weber scored his fourth goal of the game in transition off a feed from Telesco (his first-career point) for the 13-7 final. The Mountain Hawks held a 43-22 lead in both shots and groundballs. Sophomore Steve Brodeur made six saves in goal while a pair of Monmouth goalies combined for 13 stops. Monmouth was 3-of-5 on the extra man while Lehigh was 1-for-1. In the process, Lehigh reached 20 goals for the first time since March of 2010. The Mountain Hawks improve to 8-3 overall and 4-2 in Patriot League play. “I was proud of our offensive effort today,” said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. “We’ve struggled to get to the teens this year and when we’ve gotten to the teens, it’s been 13 and we haven’t been able to get passed that. Our attack did a great job today. I really challenged those guys to step up and carry us and they did that.” Junior Dan Taylor paced the offense with seven points behind three goals and a career-high four assists. Classmate Patrick Corbett posted his second straight hat trick (and ninth of his career), finishing with a game-high four goals along with two assists for a career-high six points. One game after a career-high five points, sophomore Reid Weber matched that behind two goals and three assists. The starting attack combined for nine goals and eight assists on the afternoon. Sophomore Billy Oppenheimer also tallied two goals and an assist while junior Pat Dougherty had two assists and classmate Kurtis Kaunas scored a goal and added an assist. Freshman Casey McAdam was sensational once again at the faceoff X, winning 15-of-20 while scooping three groundballs. He has now won 32-of-43 over the last two games. Senior Ryan Buttenbaum also won 4-of-7 faceoffs with four groundballs. Sophomore defenseman Tripp Telesco finished with three groundballs and three caused turnovers while senior Lukas Mikelinich also caused three turnovers. Senior Ty Souders scooped a game-high five groundballs. Senior Jimmy Cahill got the scoring started just 20 seconds into the game while Corbett made it 2-0 less than two minutes later. The lead swelled to 4-0 after goals from sophomore Ray Mastroianni and senior Matt Risk before Taylor and Corbett rounded out the first-quarter scoring. Kevin Lux got Holy Cross on the board at 12:51 of the second quarter, but Lehigh answered with the next three. Lux’s second of the game pulled the Crusaders within 9-2, but the Mountain Hawks answered in a big way. Weber’s second goal rounded out the first-half scoring and began a string of 10 straight Mountain Hawk goals bridging the end of the second and beginning of the fourth quarters. Lehigh outscored Holy Cross 8-0 in the third quarter. Taylor assisted on two straight Corbett goals in the span of 1:34 as part of the run. Freshmen Matt Raposo and Mike Sammarro scored Lehigh’s fourth-quarter goals as the Mountain Hawks closed out the dominant 20-4 victory. Lehigh finished with a 51-20 edge in shots and 37-22 advantage in groundballs. Junior goalie Matt Poillon stopped five-of-seven shots sent his way over the first three quarters before sophomore Steve Brodeur relieved him and made four saves, allowing two goals. A pair of Crusaders goalies combined to make 10 saves. BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh men’s lacrosse team scored five of the first six second-half goals to turn a one-goal lead into a 10-5 advantage on its way to an impressive 11-7 win over #16/19 ColgateColgate on Saturday at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks allowed just 21 Raiders shots, only three coming from Colgate’s leading scorer Ryan Walsh who was held pointless by Lehigh sophomore defenseman Tripp Telesco. With the win, Lehigh improves to 9-3 and 4-2 in the Patriot League while ColgateColgate falls to 7-4 and 3-3 in the league. “It was a great day,” said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. “I was proud of our guys’ effort. I thought the guys played hard today, played with purpose and with fire. That was really important for us. I don’t think we had a great start, but our play in the third quarter was inspired. Guys played really hard, trying to pick up groundballs and make the simple plays. That proved to be the difference today.” After 42 straight games with a point, Walsh was held pointless for a second straight game. He only had three shots, one on goal as Telesco continued his tremendous season. He finished with four groundballs and three caused turnovers to up his season totals to 35 and 28, respectively. Junior Dan Taylor led the offense with four points behind two goals and two assists. Junior Kurtis Kaunas also had two goals and senior Matt Smith dished two assists. Eight other Mountain Hawks posted a single point in a balanced all-around effort. Saturday was Senior Day as Lehigh’s 13 seniors were recognized prior to their final home game in the Brown and White. With the win over ColgateColgate, this senior class became the winningest in program history. The Mountain Hawks have defeated the Raiders four straight times after a seven-game losing streak against Colgate was snapped in the 2012 Patriot League Championship Game. The Mountain Hawks played a physical, aggressive style, forcing 15 of ColgateColgate’s 24 turnovers. Junior Dylan O’Shaughnessy had two groundballs and two caused turnovers while classmate Sam Lawrence also caused a pair of turnovers. Lehigh’s starting defense of Telesco and seniors Ty Souders and Lukas Mikelinich combined for nine groundballs and five caused turnovers on the afternoon. A back and forth first half began with a ColgateColgate goal at 6:36 of the first quarter. Lehigh responded with the next two, from sophomores Reid Weber at 4:45 and Billy Oppenheimer at 1:09. The teams traded goals in the second quarter, each scoring three times. After ColgateColgate pulled even, freshman Jason Kozel scored his first-career goal in transition off a feed from Lawrence to make it 3-2 at the 8:37 mark. Junior Alan Henderson and Taylor scored Lehigh’s other second-quarter goals. Coming out of halftime, Lehigh outscored ColgateColgate 4-1 in the third quarter to improve its season total to 42-14 in that stanza. Taylor began the scoring at 12:35 followed by a Mastroianni rocket from Smith less than a minute later. After a Raiders goal, Kaunas scored twice in 2:09 to make it 9-5 after 45 minutes of play. Lehigh and Colgate both scored twice in the fourth quarter as O’Shaughnessy and sophomore Alex Eaton gave the Mountain Hawks their 10th and 11th goals. Lehigh’s offense has now scored 44 times over its last three games. Colgate scored with 1:27 remaining, but it wasn’t nearly enough. Final shots were 35-21 in favor of Lehigh. The Raiders held a 34-33 edge in groundballs. Faceoffs were even at 11, but Buttenbaum was strong in his time, winning 10-of-17 at the X. Junior Dan Taylor led the offense with five goals to tie a career high while classmate Matt Poillon finished with 13 saves, including six in the first quarter. “It was a great game. It was two teams battling hard,” said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. “There was good energy on both sides of the ball. Both teams really wanted this game. Both teams fought tooth and nail for it and that’s how you get a double overtime game. It was a great environment and great to play on national TV (ESPNU). Congrats to Princeton for getting the job done.” Tied at eight late in regulation, Kaunas scored on a delayed penalty to make it 9-8. Lehigh won the ensuing faceoff, but Princeton forced a turnover. Poillon came up with a save with less than a minute remaining, but the Tigers eventually got the ball back with just over 20 seconds on the clock. They capitalized as Kip Orban scored in an unsettled situation with 2.7 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Lehigh won the opening faceoff of both overtimes, but couldn’t put away the game winner. Early in the second overtime, Kaunas had a good look that was stopped. After a timeout, Tigers All-American midfielder Tom Schreiber scored his fourth goal of the night with 2:51 on the clock to end it. Four Mountain Hawks scored a single goal to go with Taylor’s five: juniors Kaunas, Patrick Corbett and Dylan O’Shaughnessy, along with sophomore Reid Weber. Sophomore Tripp Telesco and junior Dylan O’Shaughnessy each had two caused turnovers while senior Lukas Mikelinich scooped four groundballs to lead the defense. The Mountain Hawks gave up a season-high 52 shots, but many were from the outside, allowing Poillon to gobble up many saves. Schreiber was limited to four goals on 21 shots as only eight of his shots were on target. The Mountain Hawks allowed 10 goals to a Princeton team averaging almost 13 per game. “We played great defense all day,” said Cassese. “That’s one of the top offenses in the country. Unfortunately, at the end of regulation, we couldn’t seal the deal. We had an opportunity to win the game. It didn’t have to go to overtime. We were just playing stick to it defense [against Schreiber]. We were quick to help to him and slow to leave from him. Unfortunately at the end there, we just didn’t do our jobs.” Senior Ryan Buttenbaum was stellar at the faceoff X, winning 16-of-23 while scooping eight groundballs. Neither team could find the back of the net until 1.7 seconds left in the first quarter when Taylor took a restart and brought it in front, beating Princeton goalie Eric Sanschagrin to make it 1-0 after one quarter of play. The Tigers responded in the second quarter by outscoring the Mountain Hawks 3-1 to take a 3-2 halftime lead. Taylor scored Lehigh’s goal at the 5:15 mark. After five goals in the first half, the third quarter saw seven by itself. The Mountain Hawks scored four, including three of the first four. Taylor tallied his third less than a minute in, then after a Princeton goal, O’Shaughnessy scored off a faceoff as junior Alan Henderson made the scoop and found the long pole in the middle of the field. Taylor gave Lehigh a 5-4 lead just over one minute later. However, Princeton scored three of the next four goals to eventually take a 7-6 lead early in the fourth quarter. A Corbett extra man goal evened the score at seven, then after Schreiber gave the Tigers an 8-7 lead, Taylor tied the score exactly a minute later, setting up Kaunas’ go-ahead goal and the dramatic end of regulation and back-and-forth overtime. FOLSOM, Pa. - Led by a career-high tying eight points from junior Dan Taylor and another strong defensive effort, the #19/20 Lehigh men’s lacrosse dominated Georgetown in a 12-3 win on Saturday evening. The game was played at Ridley High School as part of the second annual Relentless Cup in support of the HEADstrong Foundation’s fight against blood cancers. “I thought tonight was big for us coming off Tuesday against Princeton,” said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. “Our focus was on energy, trying to get the energy back. That was a deflating loss for us on national TV against a great opponent. I was nervous our guys would be a little flat coming out, so I was proud the way they came out. I’m proud of the effort throughout, especially on the defensive end.” The Mountain Hawks improve to 10-4 overall, reaching double-figure victories for a third straight season after going 18 years between double-digit victories. The Relentless Cup is a special fundraising lacrosse event uniting communities in support of the HEADstrong Foundation by combining interstate youth games, high school games, highlighted by Lehigh vs. Georgetown under the lights. Proceeds from the Relentless Cup directly supported the essential quality life services provided by the HEADstrong Foundation, supporting cancer patients and their families. “We play at the HEADstrong fall tournament for the Colleluori Classic. We didn’t come this year, so it was good to get back to Ridley and be a part of this event,” said Cassese. “I have so much respect for the Colleluori family and for the HEADstrong foundation that when they approached me with the opportunity of moving this game to Ridley, I said absolutely, we would love to be a part of the cause and support the cause.” One game after scoring five goals at Princeton, Taylor finished with four goals and four assists. Sophomores Kurtis Kaunas and Reid Weber, along with junior Patrick Corbett, all scored two goals apiece. Kaunas added two assists for a career-high four points. The Lehigh defense continued its strong play, causing 11 of the Hoyas 16 turnovers while allowing four goals or fewer for a fourth time this season. Senior Lukas Mikelinich and sophomore Casey Eidenshink each finished with three caused turnovers. Along with senior Ty Souders, the starting close defense combined for nine groundballs and eight caused turnovers. Junior Matt Poillon was strong in goal, making eight saves on the evening. Hoyas goalie Jake Haley was stellar as well, making 17 saves. Junior Dylan O’Shaughnessy opened the scoring at 10:25 of the first quarter with a man-up goal to make it 1-0. Corbett scored an unassisted goal just over oneminute later for a 2-0 lead. After Georgetown pulled within 2-1 at 7:03 of the first quarter, Lehigh scored the next five straight capped off by two straight from Taylor in the span of 24 seconds and a Taylor feed to Weber on the extra man that made it 7-1 at 4:26 of the third quarter. The Hoyas finally solved the Lehigh defense just over one minute later, but not before the Mountain Hawks held Georgetown scoreless for 33:39. The Hoyas pulled within 8-3 early in the fourth quarter, but the Mountain Hawks scored the final four goals including the final two from Taylor in the span of 1:06 for the 12-3 final. Final shots were 51-23 in favor of Lehigh as the Mountain Hawks eclipsed 50 shots for the first time since last March 2 vs. VMI. Groundballs were 33-30 Lehigh. The Hoyas won 13-of-19 faceoffs. Lehigh was 2-for-5 on the man advantage while Georgetown did not have an extra man opportunity. Lehigh beat the Leopards for a fifth straight time and 13th time in its last 14 tries as the Mountain Hawks head into the Patriot League Tournament with an 11-4 record and 6-2 league mark. Junior Dan Taylor continued his stellar play with a career-high seven goals including six straight goals to turn an 8-3 lead into a 14-3 advantage. “Dan did a nice job. Our offense really goes as Dan goes,” said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. “I had a conversation with him before the game tonight and told him I wanted him to be super aggressive and really set the tone for us on the offensive end. He did a good job of that and the other guys followed suit.” Taylor has now reached 61 points on the season behind 39 goals and 22 assists. The two-time defending Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week set a career high with nine points (seven goals, two assists) as well. He has now posted 22 points over his last three games (16 goals, six assists). Sophomore Reid Weber added three goals, all in the game’s first 16:36, for his third-career hat trick. Junior Kurtis Kaunas scored twice while five others tallied a single goal. “I thought it was a six-man unit on offense today,” said Taylor. “I thought we shot the ball really well and were working hard off the ground and moving the ball well, so I’m really excited about today.” The Lehigh defense impressed as junior goalie Matt Poillon stopped six-of-ten shots in just under 45 minutes of action. The Mountain Hawks emptied their bench in the fourth quarter, including the first-career action for freshmen goaltenders Donny Stires and Garrett Miers who each made a save. Weber got the scoring started at 13:44 of the first quarter, making a move from behind the goal and beating Lafayette netminder Jake Hyatt to make it 1-0. The Leopards tied the score with an extra man goal just over one minute later, but three straight Mountain Hawk goals, beginning with Taylor’s first of the evening, made it 4-1 with 5:41 left in the opening stanza. Lafayette scored two of the next three to pull within 5-3, but that’s when the Mountain Hawks took over. Lehigh went on to score 11 straight goals over the next 26:07 beginning with an extra man goal from senior Cody Newton. Taylor added his natural hat trick (times two) as the run ended with the first-career goal from junior Sam Lawrence and Kaunas’ second of the evening to make it 16-3 at 1:30 of the third quarter. From there, several Lehigh players saw action as sophomore Chris Appell scored his second goal of the season in the fourth quarter and sophomore Steve Brodeur, Stires and Miers all played between the pipes and each made at least one save. The Mountain Hawks scored four goals in the first 5:35 of the second quarter to take a lead, than had four in a 6:09 span in the fourth to create separation, as Lehigh won its seventh straight Patriot League Tournament game. The Mountain Hawks will now play Army on Friday evening in the Patriot League Semifinals. “That was an absolute battle,” said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. “I give all the credit in the world to Navy. They showed up and they played their hearts out. I thought they carried the pace of play early in the game. I thought our guys responded well late in the first half and late in the game. We were fortunate enough to get the victory. It was everything that I expect when we play a service academy.” Junior midfielder Kurtis Kaunas sparked the offense with his first-career hat trick, with all three goals coming at crucial times. He added an assist to tie a careerhigh four points, originally set just two games ago against Georgetown. Junior goalie Matt Poillon was stellar between the pipes. After making no firstquarter saves, he stopped 15-of-19 over the final three quarters including seven-of-eight in the second. Lehigh outscored the Midshipmen 4-1 in that stanza to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 5-3 halftime lead. Three other Mountain Hawks scored a pair of goals - juniors Patrick Corbett and Dan Taylor along with sophomore Reid Weber - while senior Matt Smith added a big third-quarter goal to snap more than a 21-minute scoreless drought. Navy came out with a vengeance, taking a 2-1 lead after one quarter of play until Lehigh scored four times in the first 5:35 of the second quarter to take a 5-2 advantage. Kaunas got Lehigh on the scoreboard in the first quarter then finished an extra man goal at 9:25 of the second to make it 5-2 which forced a Navy timeout. The Midshipmen rallied to score three of the next four goals, including one with six seconds left in the third quarter, to pull within 6-5 after 45 minutes of play. Kaunas came up big once again, beating Navy goalie John Connors low at 8:09 of the fourth quarter to give Lehigh an all-important two-goal lead at 7-5. That goal sparked the Mountain Hawks as Weber, Taylor and Corbett followed with goals to give Lehigh a 10-5 advantage with two minutes remaining. Corbett also had a big caused turnover as Navy was trying to clear. That led to Weber’s goal which made it 8-5 Mountain Hawks with 6:38 remaining. The Mids were in the midst of a transition opportunity looking to pull within one. Navy’s Tucker Hull scored his third goal of the game with 1:23 left in the fourth, but it wasn’t nearly enough. Lehigh’s defense finished the evening with 12 caused turnovers including three each from senior Lukas Mikelinich and junior Dylan O’Shaughnessy. O’Shaughnessy also set a career high with four groundballs while Weber shattered his career high, scooping six.
