Newsletter of the Puget Sound Olds Club
An Official Chapter of the Oldsmobile Club of America
March 2016
Each morning at the beginning of the Barrett-Jackson Auction, the bidder
assistants lined the stage and were introduced one by one. The skill of these
ladies and gentlemen at bringing out the bids in the audience are paramount to
the success of the auction. This year at the auction, it was a “buyer’s market”.
Prices were down considerably. In fact, there were a number of sellers that
went home with a much smaller amount of cash than they had expected.
There were cars and trucks that should have brought $60,000 or more that did
not reach $40,000. Regarding trucks, this year there were more customized
trucks offered than ever before. Only one Oldsmobile fared very well. It was
a 1970 W30 convertible that brought $170,000 plus buyer’s fee of 12 percent,
This trip to Barrett-Jackson was especially significate as your editor was able
to spend some time with Gordon Apker just days before he passed away. The
car collector hobby will not be the same without Gordon. A memorial service
will be held on March 19 in Federal Way, WA. A few of the photos of his
collection are in this newsletter.

President’s Message
PSOC Members,
Our February chapter meeting was a success!
As was announced last month, it was decided to
move our monthly chapter meeting to the second
Tuesday of the month. Most of the members
who attended the meeting arrived at 6pm for
dinner. The official meeting started at 7pm. The
staff at the Plum Delicious restaurant was
fantastic.
The March Chapter meeting will be on
Tuesday, the 8th. Directions on page 13. Once
again, 6pm for dinner or snacks and the meeting
convening at 7pm. By the way, they have a pie
and cake selection that will surely impress you. I
had the coconut cream. It was outstanding!
Last month, we lost one of our long time faithful
members, Fred Steik. A celebration of his life
was held at the Torero’s Mexican Restaurant in
Renton. Please read Fred’s obituary in this
newsletter on page 6. Fred was honored by the
attendance of many of the firemen he served
with as a Fire District 40 volunteer for many
years. Fred’s wry sense of humor and faithful
attendance at chapter events will be missed.
The car collector hobby lost another icon on
February 4. Gordon Apker passed away in
Scottsdale, AZ from a courageous bout with
cancer. The sale of his 1954 Olds F-88 concept
car became one of the most famous cars every
sold at the Barrett-Jackson Auction.
See you at the chapter meeting.

“BETWEEN THE BUMPERS” … By Ed
nsmo
“Between the Bumpers” this month is dedicated to Gordon Apker.
Greg Hinton and I had the privilege of spending time with Gordon and his wife,
Janet, in Scottsdale the week before Gordon passed away. The consummate
host, Gordon insisted on showing us a small part of his collection in his
immaculate garage despite his weakening health. The car collector hobby has
lost one on its most influential members. Below are just a few photos taken
during our visit with Gordon. A celebration of Gordon’s life will take place in
Federal Way on March. 19
This 1947 8 cylinder Olds was one of
Gordon’s favorite cars. He owned it
for many years.
The license plate on the front of
Gordon’s ’52 88 Hardtop was
appropriately adorned with a plate
from his “Shakey’s Pizza Parlor”
where his fortune was made.
A side view of the ’52 88.

A few of Gordon’s collection in his warehouse in Scottsdale. In addition to
Oldsmobiles, Gordon collected Hudsons, Chevs and Chryslers.
A prized bill board poster that had never been posted!
