Adventure Tourism Expo 2009
Outdoor Events scheduled for Saturday June 6, 2009
The Big Sandy Area Development District will host the First Annual Big Sandy Adventure Tourism Conference and Expo
on June 7th through 8th at the Mountain Arts Center. In honor of National Trails Day, National Fishing and Boating
Week, and Free Fishing Days in Kentucky, the following events have been organized to kick off the Expo and Conference
on June 6th. Please register for events prior to May 15th to receive a free t-shirt. Participants will be welcome the day of
the event, providing that space is still available. Additional information about these events will be placed on the Big
Sandy Area Development District website at www.bigsandy.org. Please visit regularly for updates about these events,
the expo and the conference.
Note: All participants in special events will be required to sign a waiver prior to participation.
Big Sandy Water Trail Float Trip

Participants should arrive at the Combs Airport site in Hager Hill on June 6 by 9:00. The Floyd County and the Johnson County
Rescue Squads will have swift water rescue equipment on display. Life jacket and boat inspections will be done at the launch site.
Floaters will begin entering the water at 9:30 a.m., and will float about eight miles to the boat ramp behind the Paintsville Water
Treatment Plant on Depot Street. Refreshments will be served by the event sponsor, Hatfield-McCoy River Rats. About 15 canoes
and kayaks are available for participants that do not have their own. Advanced registration will be necessary to reserve a seat on
these boats on a first-come first-served basis. The trip should take four to five hours. A livery will be available to bring floaters and
boats back to the Combs Airport launch site. Each participant that registers by May 15, 2009 will receive a free t-shirt to
commemorate the event.
Elk Horn Park Mountain Biking Adventure
Elk Horn Park, located at Turkey Creek in Floyd County has over eight miles of scenic mountain biking trails and will be holding their

first organized mountain biking event on June 6 . Details about the event will be released soon. All participants that register by
May 15, 2009 will receive a free t-shirt.
Kentucky Mountain Saddle Club will sponsor a horse trail ride beginning at the Johnson County Rescue Squad and traveling in
the vicinity of Paintsville Lake and then returning to the Rescue Squad for a distance of about 10 miles. More details about this trip
are to follow. Each participant that registers by May 15, 2009 will receive a free t-shirt.
The Martin County Saddle Club will sponsor its spring horse trail ride in the German Bridge area in Floyd County June 5th – 7th.
Ride will begin at 10:00 a.m. each day with concessions available. For additional information call 606-673-4573. Each participant
that registers by May 15, 2009 will receive a free t-shirt.
Dewey Lake Wildlife Watching Pontoon Boat Ride
Jenny Wiley State Park staff will conduct a pontoon boat ride that will take participants on a tour of Dewey Lake to view the lake and
its abundant wildlife. Boat rides start at 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. from the marina. Each participant that registers by May 15, 2009
will receive a free t-shirt. (Limited seating – must register in advance for this event.)
ATV Ride
An ATV ride is planned to leave from the Knott County Training Facility at 10:00 a.m. All riders are asked to have their ATV’s there by
9:45 a.m. The mapped trails offered through this club will give riders an idea of what will be available in the future for our region. A
guide will take riders on a 3-4 hour moderate trail ride. Directions to the center are: Take Hwy 80 to Hwy 1098 north 2 miles turning
left onto Elk View Road, then right on Sutton Memorial Drive. Helmets are required on riders 16 years old and under. Each
participant that registers by May 15, 2009 will receive a free t-shirt.
Jenny Wiley Bike Tour
Pro-Fitness of Prestonsburg will sponsor a 30-mile tour beginning at Pro-Fitness, continuing on KY RT 321 to Van Lear, around
Dewey Lake and then returning to Prestonsburg. Additional miles can be added with interest. The ride will begin at 9:00 a.m. Each
participant that registers by May 15, 2009 will receive a free t-shirt.
More details about these events will be released as they develop.
Many free activities have been scheduled for Sunday, June 7, 2009 at the Expo. All instructors are specialists in their respective event. Be sure and sign up early to be guaranteed a seat. Visit www.bigsandy.org for details. Session attendees can register in a drawing for one door prize to be given away at the conclusion of each activity. Archery 101 – 3:00 – 5:30 p.m. ‐ This class will take participants through the Ten Basic Steps to Shoot a Bow. Other topics will include safety, testing eye dominance, and archery fitness. Attend this session and register for a Genesis Bow giveaway. Bird Watching Adventures in the Big Sandy – 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. ‐ Participants will learn the basics of bird watching, finding and interpreting bird clues and attracting birds to a particular locations or habitat. Attend this session and register for a birding binoculars giveaway. Chain Saw Instruction ‐ 1:00 – 3:30 p.m.(Classroom) 4:00 – 5:30 (Elkhorn Park) ‐ This training is primarily for trail club members who will be performing trail maintenance activities such as clearing the trail area of hazard trees or trees that have fallen as a result of storms. The course will provide an overview of all aspects of chainsaw work for trails including: limbing, bucking, and felling operations. Proper use, safety, and chainsaw maintenance will also be covered. Attend this session and register for chaps and a hard hat to be given away. Fly Tying – 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. ‐ This activity will be educational and fun for everyone whether you have never tried fly tying or have been tying for years. If you have your own fly tying gear you can bring it, if not materials will be available to help you tie your first fly. Experienced tiers will learn how to do more advance tying techniques. Attend this session and register to win a fly tying kit. GPS 101 – 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. ‐ If you would like to know how to find your way on a trail or find the coordinates of your favorite trail to share with others, then this class will get you started. The instructor will present the basics of GPS unit use. If you have a GPS and would like to know more about it, please bring it to the class. A limited number of GPS units will be available to use during the class if you do not have a unit. Attend this session and register for a GPS unit to be given away. Canoe/Kayak Instruction – 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. ‐ This activity will be held at a local pool and will teach beginners kayak safety and technique. Steven Ruth, Elkhorn City native and whitewater enthusiast, will provide demonstration and instruction. A door prize will be given to one lucky participant. Wildlife Photography – 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. ‐ Kenny Mitchell, noted eastern Kentucky photographer, will offer tips and techniques on taking wildlife photographs. Bring your camera. Attend this session and register to win a digital camera. Bicycle Maintenance and Flat Repair – 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. ‐ What if you are riding your bike in a remote area and your tire goes flat? Complete this class and you will know how to repair the flat and get right back on the trail. Other bicycle maintenance items will be discussed, including preventative maintenance. Bring your bike if you would like an inspection. Attend this session to register to win a 20” bicycle. Wildlife In The Big Sandy – 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. ‐ Get first‐hand views of reptiles and amphibians in this wildlife activity ‐‐
‐‐ learn about and see frogs, lizards, salamanders, snakes and turtles up close and in person. Ron Vanover and Trinity Shepherd will conduct this session. Great family activity! Attend this session and register to win a field guide. Turkey Calling – 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. ‐ This class will feature instruction by the 2008 2nd Place State Champion Turkey Caller, Dewayne Tackett. Participants will learn how to use different turkey calling techniques. Whether you are ready to call your next turkey or your first turkey, this class will have something for you. Attend this session and register to win a turkey calling DVD.
