Spring 2015 HEDINGHAM COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER http://www.hedingham.org No. 41 Mission Statement The intention is to project a positive image of Hedingham, provide news and information to all residents without editorializing or taking sides HEDINGHAM COMMUNITY MANAGER Hedingham has a new Community Manager - Dan Quartermane! Dan has more than a decade of HOA experience and nine years of experience with CAS during which time he has managed as many as 24 communities. In 2012 he won a Special Recognition Award at the CAI annual conference, and in 2013 he was one of the top 10 finalists for HOA Manager of the Year. Dan cares about the Community and the Board of Directors, which is the reason he is so successful. Feel free to stop by the Athletic Center, introduce yourself, and welcome him to our community. Wristbands for Guests at Community Facilities This summer Hedingham started issuing colored wristbands for all guests of residents at our pools and athletic facility. Guests must be accompanied by a resident. A guest fee of $2 for each guest is paid at entry to the pools and a $5 fee at the athletic facility. The guest will then be issued a wristband with the resident’s last name and a date. We still are asking each resident to sign the guest book as well upon entry. This allows the pool and athletic facility personnel to identify everyone in the event of an emergency. Community Swimming Pools Both the Grand Traverse and Willow Oak pools will be open from noon to 7 PM on Labor Day, September 7, and then they will both close for the season. Hedingham Fall Festival Saturday, October 10 1-4 PM Games Food Face Painting Line Dancing Crafts The Hedingham Community "Fall Festival" will be held at the Hedingham Athletic Club on Saturday, October 10, 1-4 PM. This event will feature face painting, balloon artists, crafts and vendors, pumpkin painting, food, games, line dancing, and lots of fun. Residents will need to show their Hedingham Scan Card for food/drink tickets. If you do not have a Scan Card, drop by the Athletic Club to get one you will need a photo ID. Otherwise, food tickets can be purchased for $5.00 per person. If you would like to showcase/market your crafts or business at this great event, please contact Denise Thompston at [email protected]. NEIGHBORHOOD CAMERAS - Proactive vs. Reactive Security A Discussion on How Best to Keep Hedingham Safe We live in a wonderful community and with the help of the Raleigh Police Department’s Community Officer Program, York Security, and our own Neighbor Looking After Neighbor Watch Program, we are recognized as one of the safer neighborhoods in Raleigh. Hedingham has approximately nine miles of road to patrol. It is difficult for the Police or York to be present when something happens and they are either on the other side of the community or not in the area. Calls are made to 911 by our residents who also use the Suspicious Activity Reporting System on the Community Website....www.Hedingham.org. This has helped. However, we are not without isolated problems. With recent incidents that started at the front pool on Memorial Day, and two incidents of vandalism at the same pool since then, a renewed interest and discussion has been started regarding whether enough is being done. At the Open Board Meeting on July 15th a request was made that the Board Members meet with the Neighborhood Voting Members to discuss having a study done to determine if Video Surveillance Cameras strategically placed in the Common Areas of the Community could be an important part of the solution. These silent sentinels that are present around the clock have proven themselves to be an effective deterrent in reducing criminal activity and solving crimes. Some have expressed their right to privacy. Cameras cannot be installed where privacy is expected such as bathrooms, or looking into one’s home. They are quite legal when used on HOA common areas and building environments as well as public and business areas. Thus, the discussion continues and your input would be appreciated. Drop or email your comments at the Community Manager’s Office at the Athletic Club. NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH Neighbor Looking After Neighbor In order to insure the safety of our Community we should all do our part in keeping an eye out for anything out of the ordinary. If this should occur, call 911 and let the Police decide its importance. THIS IS WHAT THE POLICE HAVE TOLD US. If there is something that you are concerned about but feel that a 911 call is overkill, go to www.hedingham.org and report it on the Suspicious Activity Reporting System. The Neighborhood Watch meets the 4th Thursday of the month at 7 PM at the Willow Oak Clubhouse where we hear from and discuss issues with our Community Officer as well as York Security. Every resident should consider themselves to be part of the Neighborhood Watch and please consider attending these short meetings so that you can be informed. Help to keep our Community Safe. Page 2 Community Fall Yard Sale The Community Fall Yard Sale will take place on Saturday, September 19, with a rain date of Saturday, September 26. The Association will advertise the Yard Sale in the N&O one week before the sale. Items should be put out by 8 AM and removed by 5 PM the same day. Residents who put up directional signs must remove them by 5 PM the day of the sale. A reminder that Individual Yard Sales are not permitted at any time. 2015 SHARK SWIM SEASON The Hedingham Sharks coached by Nathan Weddle and Shannon Bradley Foster had another fun-filled summer in 2015. Competition in Division 5, though tough, never daunted the 127 swimmers on our team. As a parent, I saw all ages learn how to swim this year and improve, parents and kids made new friends, and lots of ice cream enjoyed on Wednesday nights at Dairy Queen. Thanks to all of you who made this a great experience for our kids! GO SHARKS! For more information, email [email protected]. Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports. The play includes using a paddle and a wiffle ball. To learn more, visit the National Pickleball Association’s website at www.usapa.org. There are local groups throughout the Triangle. Hedingham is playing each Thursday night from 7:00 – 9:00 PM at our Athletic Club Gym. If there is enough interest we would like to request more hours/days so that we can offer a lesson time for those interested in learning the game. The HCA provides all the equipment, you do not have to bring anything but your willingness to learn, a pair of athletic shoes and comfortable clothes. For more information please contact [email protected]. Golf News The Memorial Scholarship Tournament held in May was successful. There are eight applicants competing to win one of the scholarships. The awardees should be named by the August HCA Board meeting. Their award is mailed directly to the school that they are attending for deposit to the student’s account. Thanks to all those who participated in this event and those donating to help make this a successful event. Any Hedingham Resident who is a high school graduate and who has been accepted to an accredited college or technical school is eligible to apply for a scholarship. The deadline to apply has passed for this year. The Twilight League has proven to be a popular event each year. Held each Tuesday beginning in the spring and continuing into early fall, we begin at 5:30 PM at the start and then move to 6:00 PM once there is enough daylight to get in the nine holes of golf. Teams are mixed, men & women, couples, singles and a few students too. It’s a fun time for everyone and a good way to meet your neighbors and others who play here. You do not have to be a Resident to play. Afterwards, the group enjoys food and drink at the Sand Trap Restaurant in the golf clubhouse. If interested in playing in the Twilight League please send an email to [email protected].
