“Thank you for the opportunity to publically say ‘thanks’. We have never owned a
business before. We have an on-line business, so knowing where to begin and making
contacts has been invaluable to us. We made a wonderful new friend at Business After
Hours who guided us in advertising and gave us the insight to make a good decision for
our business. The Troy Fall Festival brought us several new clients and many new
friends. Words can’t describe what Dawn and her staff has given us.”

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
It seems as if September just flew by. The leaves are changing and that means it is time for the Kelly
Miller Circus to come to Troy. On October 6 and 7, the Circus will place their tent in front of RP Lumber on
Highway 40. If you have not purchased your advance tickets, be sure to do so at one of our many outlets or
online at www.troycoc.com.
In the month of October, we will be hosting two Business After Hours events. The first will be held on
Thursday, October 11, at the Village of Maryville. On Thursday, October 25, American Fitness, Edward Jones/
Mike Duff and Blue Springs Dental will host a makeup event from August. All of the hosts have put a lot of
time and effort into this event so we hope you will attend.
If you are interested in exploring another way of networking, you will want to put the Highland Business and
Professional Women’s Open House on your calendar for Monday, October 15. The event will be held at the Holiday Inn located in Highland. The event is open to all women in local communities. I will be guest speaking on Networking, Time Management and Organization. We hope to see you there.
On Monday, October 29, the Chamber will be hosting a Wellness Day, including a Blood Drive, Glucose Screening, Spine Screening and much more. The event will be held at the Chamber Office. Food and refreshments will be provided.
On a personal note, my husband and I enjoyed a cruise to the Bahamas with ten of our friends and family this month. We all
came back very refreshed. They had a karaoke bar. I’m telling you that it doesn’t get any better than that. Also this month my
customer service book came closer to being a reality. I am working with a content editor and the book should be
put to print in early 2008. I know many of you have been hearing about this book for a long time and believe me,
no one is more excited than me.
Have a fantastic October.

A WHOLE LOT GOING ON
BLUEGRASS AND A FIDDLER’S FROLIC AT MARYVILLE’S CONCERT IN THE PARK
Maryville’s Concert in the Park will host George Portz and The Friends of Bluegrass on October 14 in Fireman’s Park at 5 pm
in the large pavilion. George Portz & "The Friends of Bluegrass" are the most versatile performing group in the area as they blend
their fiery Bluegrass roots with some fine traditional Irish and Louisiana Cajun music. Their "Cajun Set" has won rave reviews from
crowds throughout the Midwest. The group's enthusiasm, top-notch musical ability, wit and humor are always evident during their
performances. George's "musical philosophy" is always ”Leave 'em wanting more" ...and they always do!
George Portz is the group's leader and founder. He is an Illinois State Fair Fiddle Champion, Illinois State Fiddle Champion,
Western Illinois State Fiddle Champion, and his and his fiddling highlights include over 130 First Place Championships. He has performed for 2 presidents; President Richard Nixon in 1973 at the White House and with his group "The Friends of Bluegrass at the
Illinois State Fair in 1986 for President Ronald Reagan. He has also performed at the Grand Ole Opry. His dynamic fiddle style
ranges from fiery Bluegrass to zesty Cajun.
The afternoon concert will start with A Fiddler’s Frolic. A number of young fiddlers will do their “thing” and then all will
play together in a finale. Fiddlers include 9 year old Colton Dever from New Athens, Tim Anders from Collinsville, Tyler and Todd
Moore from Marine and Josh Rench from Greenville.
Parking is available around the park;
however, due to construction in the area
with new curbs and sidewalks, spaces may be
limited. There is ample parking available at
the Mother of Perpetual Help Church parking lot just one block east of the park. For
further information, call Judy at 288-9232
or Dennis at 343-1299. Bring your lawn
chairs or sit at the picnic tables, bring some
bug spray if needed and something to drink
or eat. There's not a fiddle player in the
Midwest that can entertain an audience like
George.

Gather up your little laboratory assistants, and head to the Children’s Museum on Saturdays in October and November. A
special Astronomy Day event will kick off four Saturdays of Super Science, October 6 and 13, and November 3 and 10, and space is

Astronomy Day is designed as fun for the entire family, and will take place October 6, from 12:00—3:15 p.m. Sky watchers can come explore unique telescopes that look at the sun, and discuss the stars and planets with members of the River Bend
Astronomy Club. Other astronomy related activities and demonstrations will be available to all ages. Admission is $3 per person,
the same as admission to the Museum.
“We are kicking off our series of four super science exploration classes with astronomy, and will focus our first class the
same day on astronomy. The class will run from 1:30-3 p.m.,” says Lisa Leehy, Executive Director. “This and all of the classes are
targeted at children 7 to 11 years old.”
The astronomy class will be led by science instructor and River Bend Astronomy Club member, Terry Menz. The class will

SO MUCH GOING ON
SWIC CONSTRUCTION TRADES PROGRAM EXPANDS TO SWGCC
If you would like to enter the construction field but think you don’t have the skills to compete in the job market, the
Construction Trades Preparation program at the Southwestern Illinois College Sam Wolf Granite City Campus can help you start
your career.
In this free training program, offered this fall, you can learn the tools and skills to prepare for an entry-level position or
apprenticeship in the local construction industry.
The first session will be offered from 9-4:40 p.m., Monday through Friday, Oct. 1 to Nov. 29.
Construction Trades Preparation is an intensive, eight-and-a-half-week, college-credit program designed for individuals who
want to test their interest in and aptitude for a construction trade. This unique program helps minorities and women prepare for
employment in the construction trades. Half of the program focuses on the tools and techniques of the construction trades such as
bricklaying, carpentry, painting, masonry, pipefitting, sheet metal working and electrical work. The other half deals with the math
concepts needed for apprenticeship testing.
The SWIC Adult Basic Education Department can offer this program free to 15 individuals each session who qualify and
meet one or more of the following: lack a high school diploma, have recently earned a GED, participate in Department of Human
Services program or English as a second language. “The main goal of the program is to provide a pool of qualified applicants for
construction projects and apprenticeship programs,” said Suzanne Dailey, Ph.D., director of SWIC Adult Basic Education. “There is
a need in this area for more qualified women and minorities in the construction field.” Another important component of the program
is the GED test preparation for those students who lack a high school diploma.
The college has operated a similar program at East St. Louis Community College Center for the last five year. The Illinois
Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity provided SWIC with a $450,000 grant to set up this Construction Trades
Program at SWGCC. The college developed the program in direct response to the needs of area unions and contractors. Qualified
workers are needed for the many construction projects under way in the Metro East.
The Construction Trades Preparation program was designed with the cooperation of local union leaders. Partners in this
project are the Southern Illinois District Council of Carpenters, Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 101, the Southwestern Illinois
Construction Advancement Program, Southwestern Illinois Electricians Local 309, Southwestern Illinois Building and Construction
Trades Council, Laborers’ International Union of North America and the Southern Illinois Builders Association. Members of these
and other groups will serve as advisors to the project helping with the transition of participations to further education or training.
For information or to register for the orientation session, call Program Coordinator Diane Lexow at 618-931-0600, ext. 6621.

GATEWAY REGIONAL PROMOTING COMMUNITY
GATEWAY REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER AND LIFE LINE SCREENING PARTNER
TO PROMOTE HEALTHIER COMMUNITIES
Gateway Regional Medical Center is partnering with Life Line Screening, the nation’s largest provider of preventive
screenings to stop stroke in its tracks. Screening can identify risk factors that lead to stroke before this disabling or deadly
event occurs. The next screening is at Gateway Regional Medical Center in the Medical Office Building, Suite 27.
Provided screenings include:
· Carotid Artery Screening – painless, non-invasive Doppler ultrasound is used to visualize the carotid arteries, the arteries
that bring blood to the brain. The majority of strokes are caused by plaque build up in these arteries.
· Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening –Ultrasound is used to visualize the abdominal aorta, the largest artery in the body,
to measure the diameter of the aorta. This measurement can indicate if there is a weakening in the aortic wall which can cause a
ballooning effect known as an aneurysm. Aneurysms can burst, which generally is fatal.
· Peripheral Arterial Disease Screening – PAD is also known as “hardening of the arteries.” Sufferers have a 4-6 fold increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Risk is evaluated through a measurement called the “Ankle-Brachial Index,” which is obtained by reading the systolic pressure in the ankle and arm.
These screenings are important because stroke strikes every 45 seconds and claims a life every three minutes. It is the third
leading cause of death in the United States and the number one cause of adult disability.
These diseases are considered “silent killers” that strike with no previous symptoms or only subtle ones. In fact, half of
all stroke victims are asymptomatic. A simple screening may prevent death or disability.
“We are very pleased to be partnering with Gateway Regional Medical Center,” says Colin Scully, Life Line Screening Chairman and CEO. “Life Line Screening is dedicated to helping people live fuller, healthier lives, and this partnership is a concrete example of putting that mission into practice.”
A special package of all three screenings is available for only $119. The whole process takes less than an hour. To preregister for a screening, contact Life Line Screening at 1-800-690-0295 to make an appointment.

CTS EXPANDS
WHAT IS INVISALIGN AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
Invisalign is a clear way to straighten teeth and a great alternative to regular braces. It uses the latest computer imaging technology to create series of clear aligners that tight-snap-fit over teeth and
make them move into position. Each clear tray aligner is worn for two
weeks and can be removed to brush, floss and eat. So, you don’t need
to alter your diet nor worry about your self-confidence because most
people won’t even know you’re wearing them.
The cost of Invisalign is comparable to clear braces. The
length of the process depends on your specific situation. Straight
teeth are not only more appealing; they also greatly enhance your selfconfidence and promote good health. Teeth that are properly aligned
create a better bite and help reduce your chances of gum disease, as
well as decrease the amount of stress put on your supporting bones and
teeth.
To schedule your free initial consultation and to see if
Invisalign is right for you, call us at 618-288-7000.

LET RENEE COOK FOR YOU!
GRMC CONTINUES TO IMPROVE WITH UPGRADES
Gateway Regional Medical Center announced today to invest in significant renovations and upgrades to their
Granite City facility. The renovation process began on August 9 and and will have several phases. The project goal will
primarily focus on the hospital’s fire notification system including sprinkler and fire alarm enhancements, and GRMC also
plans to upgrade the exterior of the facility.
“We are proud to be the primary healthcare provider for our community, and we are constantly striving to better our facility, inside and out,” said John Sanders, Chief Operating Officer for GRMC.
None of the hospital’s units will be completely shut down at one time during the renovations. GRMC’s administration does not anticipate a reduction in capacity or availability of services during the renovation period.
These improvements are some of many that have been made since the transition of ownership in 2002. In 2005,
the Emergency Room more than doubled in size, adding 10 more treatment rooms and all new equipment. In January 2006,
the hospital hosted a Grand Opening of The Spice of Life Café. And later in 2006, all rooms on the medical-surgical unit
were converted to private patient rooms.
GRMC is one of the area’s largest employers with over 1000 employees. In 2006, Gateway’s total admissions were
9,500, with approximately 25,000 Emergency Department visits and 9,000 surgeries. “We are invested in this community
and we plan to continue investing in this hospital, making it a better place to receive healthcare and to work,” added
Sanders. For more information on this current project, contact Frank Hann, GRMC’s Hospital Safety Officer at (618)
798-3842.
