community service to Bill Cosby, for his lifetime
commitment to children in our community.
As the Second Annual Dinner
Chair I humbly thank all of you
for the support necessary to
make this Evening to Foster
Dreams Gala a success. As
many of you know, CASA LA is
a non-profit organization that
recruits, trains & supports
CASA volunteers (Court
Appointed Special Advocates) to transform the lives
of abused and neglected children. Funding for our
organization is through private contributions.
This event would not have been possible without the
help of this year’s Gala Committee. Of particularly
heroic contribution was made by Charissa Gonzales,
who also gave birth to a beautiful son Harrison in
February! Bill Jones was no slouch either & Jim
Rishwain set a high bar based on how he organized
and managed last year’s event! Our fearless leader,
Executive Director Dilys Garcia, always kept us
focused on the reason we do this – for the children.
Special thanks to the team that pulled off our amazing
children’s art auction pieces: Maya Abramova for her
creativity, spirit and artistic expression while working
with our CASA kids, Mark Bradford for his willingness
to donate his incredible studio to make it happen and
Emmy-Award winning filmmaker Costa Mantis for the
short film to show the magic that happened when you
put kids and art together. Lastly, I need to thank my
wife Carolyn (aka Suzy), as without her support I no
doubt would have been some vagabond in Brooklyn!
I have been on the CASA LA Board for two years and
directly involved in the funding efforts for the Gala
during this time. Having spent time in Children’s
Court witnessing the impact that a CASA has on the
outcome on a child’s life was the inspiration for me to
become an active Board member and facilitator of the
Second Annual Evening to Foster Dreams Gala. Thank
YOU again for spending an evening with us, as we
celebrate the CASA story, its impact upon the children
it touches within the foster care system and introduce
you to the leadership of our organization.
Ed Sullivan said it best: “Tonight we have a
really, really Big Show”!! Our honorees
tonight have an unprecedented history of service, as
we take the opportunity to recognize both service for
the CASA community & children. We honor Chinese
Laundry, Masquerade, Share, Inc. Jenette Bras &
Studio DNA “AKA” GLAMOUR GOWNS SPONSORS, as
well as the GLAMOUR GOWNS COMMITTEE, a tireless
ensemble of incredible women who dedicate months
of their lives every year to help young women with the
Bob Frandzel Memorial Award.
Special recognition to the feature film Short Term 12.
Accepting for the award-winning film is its writer and
director Destin Daniel Cretton.
The CASA Lifetime Achievement Award will be
presented to Harriet Zaretsky, CASA and Activist for
the impact she’s had on the lives of so many foster
children during her 20 plus years of volunteer service.
We will be presenting the Robert Morrison Community
Service Award, our most prestigious award for lifetime
We are MORE than delighted to welcome back Dax
Shepard as this evening’s Host!! It’s a return engagement!!
We are grateful that he has taken time from his obligations
to NBC’s primetime comedy, “Parenthood” to enliven our
program with his charm & wit!
The Second Annual CASA Gala! Only made possible
by the support of YOU and our SPONSORS &
BENEFACTORS!!! Our long-term goal is to
be able to provide advocacy for each of the 28,000
children within the foster care system within LA County.
If we’re successful tonight we will have accomplished
the following:
• At the end of the evening you will know more
about us than you did at the beginning!
• You will have had a most memorable,
enjoyable evening, not soon to be forgotten!
• You will want to help us succeed in helping
more children!
Thank you so much for coming! If given the opportunity,
I’d like to thank each of you personally for attending.
Sincerely,
Louis Lucido, Dinner Chair
Welcome from Dilys and Jim
2nd Annual Evening to Foster Dreams Gala
Dear CASA Patrons, Benefactors, Advocates, Allies, Sponsors and Friends:
It is such a pleasure to welcome you tonight as we celebrate our second annual Evening to Foster Dreams Gala.
It is deeply gratifying to join with you to transform and heal the lives of children and their families. Every child
deserves a champion — and tonight we are deeply moved to be in this room filled with champions. Because
of your commitment and compassion, CASA/LA has touched the lives of so many children here and across the
country.
Tonight, as we honor people who have made it their life’s work to advocate on behalf of children everywhere, we
are also pleased to honor you: compassionate friends and volunteers of this remarkable organization. Because
of you, more voices of children are heard in court. Because of you, more kids thrive and lead healthier, more
productive lives. And because of you, we have helped to improve policies and laws that better protect children and
young adults. Your advocacy is restorative, transformative and life-saving.
For more than 35 years, CASA volunteers and supporters have championed the mission to give every abused and
neglected child a voice: I am here. I matter. I deserve love. And as we celebrate another year of great achievement,
the voices of 7,000 children have been heard — by parents, by community members, and by members of the
juvenile court system. From standing beside a child in court to donating clothes to teens for special occasions, and
even driving to get a cheeseburger for a grade-schooler, you demonstrate loving-kindness to the most vulnerable
members of our community. Thank you again for helping to make dreams come true for children who need love,
laughter and family.
We look forward to partnering with you in the next year to change the lives of more children.

The Voice for a Child.
Men and Women Volunteers Needed.
T he CASA Evening
to Foster Dreams Gala
I am for the child who has attended eight schools in four years. Because he is in foster care.
hosted by
Because his birth mother, debilitated by mental illness, neglected him. I am for him. The
child who almost died. Who now sits, surrounded by strangers, in the back of yet another
class. Failing. Because he is without glasses and nearly blind. I am for that child. So I am
there for that child. To listen to him.
Dax Shepard
To stand up in court for him. To speak for him. To champion without compromise for what’s
in his best interest. Because if I am there for him, I know he will be half as likely to languish
in foster care, and that much more likely to find a safe, permanent home. That is the child
I am for. I am a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer.
Dax is currently starring as Crosby Braverman in the popular NBC series Parenthood.
Hailing from a small town outside of Detroit, Dax Shepard honed his skills as an actor and comedian with the
much-celebrated improv troupe The Groundlings while earning an anthropology degree from UCLA. Shortly
thereafter, he found himself in the spotlight when he landed a role as himself in the inaugural season of MTV’s
wildly popular celebrity-prank series “Punk’d.” As the show’s original master of disguise, he created a barrage
of characters in an effort to disguise himself to the audience and the show’s increasingly savvy celebrity
targets.
CASA of Los Angeles mobilizes community volunteers to advocate and make a difference for
abused and neglected children in foster care.
We invite you to join us in that mission – Become a CASA….The Voice for a Child.

In 2006, Shepard was seen in Mike Judge’s Idiocracy opposite Luke Wilson and Maya Rudolph, and also
starred in the Lionsgate comedy Employee of the Month. In 2008, Shepard appeared in the Universal Pictures
comedy Baby Mama as Amy Poehler’s loser boyfriend, Carl. Previous films for Shepard include director Bob
Odenkirk’s comedy Let’s Go To Prison, Jon Favreau’s fantasy family feature Zathura: A Space Adventure,
Paramount Pictures’ Without a Paddle, opposite Seth Green and Matthew Lillard. Shepard also co-starred in
Katie Aselton’s acclaimed indie rule-bending comedy The Freebie, which premiered at the 2010 Sundance
Film Festival.
Most recently, Shepard has taken to writing and directing his own features including the 2010 comedy
Brother’s Justice, which premiered at the Austin Film Festival and was the recipient of the Audience Award.
Brother’s Justice was distributed by Tribeca Films in 2011. Shepard also wrote and directed the critically
acclaimed car chase thriller HIT AND RUN, in which he stars alongside real-life wife Kristen Bell. HIT AND RUN,
which also features Bradley Cooper, Kristin Chenoweth, and Tom Arnold, was released in the summer of 2012
by Open Road Films.
Later this year Shepard will be seen in Shawn Levy’s This is Where I Leave You and David Dobkin’s The Judge.

The Bob Frandzel Memorial Award is presented to someone who has given extraordinary
energy, time and commitment to the work of CASA of Los Angeles.
Bob Frandzel, as an advocate and mentor for the abused and neglected children of Los Angeles County, served
as a pro bono attorney, then as an active member and president of the Board of Directors of CASA.
There are many children today who lived in darkness and oppression and now have light and hope because
of the tireless effort of Bob Frandzel. He was honored for his lifetime achievement
at the first Tribute Celebration of the Friends of Child Advocates in 1996. Sadly, Bob passed away thereafter.
CASA Lifetime Achievement Award
presented to
Harriet Zaretsky
Harriet’s involvement with CASA began in
1996 as a continuation of her services as a
community activist. As a mom with two young
children, she focused on the critical needs
facing children residing in foster care. Her
background working at LAUSD, her Masters in
Special Education, and her skills as a lawyer
aligned to create an incredibly effective and
ardent advocate for CASA.
Early on, Harriet earned a distinct reputation
as a CASA who would take on large families,
including one family with nine children. Trying
to facilitate care for one child is often the typical
situation, but managing a large family unit is a
testament to Harriet’s skills and dedication. Her
tenacity and perseverance, in conjunction with
the assistance of her colleagues, allowed Harriet
to handle the most difficult family scenarios.
As one of the original Peer Coordinators
recruited for a pilot program two years ago,
she currently supervises 3 CASA’s. Additionally,
Harriet is handling her own CASA case and
is assisting a CASA who was temporarily on
medical leave. She tirelessly works for change
within the foster care system and campaigns
to improve the relationships of all the
stakeholders present in a foster child’s life. She
helped initiate direct communications with the
Department of Children and Family Services,
which has changed the way CASA interacts
with social workers and the DCFS staff. When
one of her CASA kids died unexpectedly from
Muscular Dystrophy when he was sixteen,
she successfully fought to obtain coverage for
burial expenses that had been denied. She has
been a spokesperson for CASA, advocating and
participating in significant group discussions
regarding foster care, which have resulted in
certain policy changes. Harriet has recruited
other CASA’s through outreach at her temple, at
a local law firm, and throughout the community.
She has hosted successful fundraisers at her
home, and at Justice Jog 2012, Harriet’s team,
comprised of 32 walkers, raised more for CASA
than any other team. When Harriet’s son died
tragically in 2007, the Board of Directors voted
to pay tribute to Harriet’s long time advocacy
by permanently renaming CASA’s special
needs account, Dillon’s Fund. These funds have
greatly impacted CASA kids by providing items
not easily available, such as special medical
equipment and college expenses.
Harriet is currently President of The Dillon
Henry Foundation (DHF), which honors the
memory and passions of her son. The DHF has
partnered with other non-profits to work locally
and around the world, both improving the lives
of others and addressing environmental issues
affecting our planet.
The DHF has also provided 60 scholarships to
deserving college-bound seniors, and will be
awarding ten more this spring. The DHF has
endowed a summer internship program at the
Surfrider Foundation for college interns focused
on protecting our environment and preserving
our oceans. Harriet serves on the Board of
Directors of Jewish World Watch (JWW), an antigenocide organization. The DHF’s partnership
with JWW has included building the Dillon
Henry Medical Clinic in Darfur and a Rape and
Crisis Center in the Congo. Most recently, their
work has focused on three children’s projects
in the Congo that provide housing and care for
pregnant teens, war orphans, and child sex
slaves. The DHF is proud that it continues to
accomplish outstanding work with numerous
additional programs.
T hroughout her life,
Harriet’s passion has been
to improve and enrich the
quality of children’s lives.
She remains dedicated to
responding to the enormous
needs that exist throughout
the world, and does
so while carrying forth a
vision in memory of her
remarkable son.
Harriet is a devoted mother to her daughter
Taylor, who is graduating from University of
Colorado Boulder on May 9th, and continues to
share this joy with her husband, Stephen Henry.

Award
presented to
Bill Cosby
The Rob Morrison Community Service Award is presented
to the corporation, foundation, community organization or
individual that most exemplifies a commitment to children in
our community.
As an active attorney with Pillsbury Winthrop, and a dedicated
member of the Friends of Child Advocates, Rob made a
lasting difference in our community until his sudden death in
2003. Anyone whose life was touched by Rob truly knows the
compassion and care he exhibited for children.
Short Term 12 is told through the eyes of Grace, a
twenty-something supervisor at a foster-care facility
for at-risk teenagers. She is passionate and tough, a
formidable caretaker of the kids in her charge – and
in love with her long-term boyfriend and co-worker,
Mason.

Prize at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, followed
by top awards at the Seattle International, Aspen
Shorts Festival, Independent Film Festival Boston,
CineVegas, GenArt, and was short-listed for the
2010 Academy Awards.
Grace and Mason struggle to help Marcus, an
intense, quiet kid who is about to turn 18, cope
with the difficulty of having to leave the facility. But
Grace’s own difficult past, added to the surprising
future that suddenly presents itself, throw her into
unforeseen confusion, made all the sharper by a
new arrival, Jayden, a gifted but troubled teenage
girl with whom she has a charged connection.
His feature film debut, I Am Not a Hipster, premiered
to critical acclaim at the 2012 Sundance Film
Festival.
Destin Daniel Cretton was born and raised in Maui,
Hawaii, where he spent 3 of his summers picking
pineapples in the fields near his home. He has a
BA in Communications from Point Loma Nazarene
University and completed his Masters in Film at San
Diego State University.
Destin has written and directed 4 award winning short
films: Longbranch: a Suburban Parable (premiered
at the 2002 Tribeca Film Festival), Bartholomew’s
Song (2006 Student Academy Finalist), Deacon’s
Mondays (2007 Student Academy Finalist, 2007
Angelus Winner, HBO Films Best Student Film
Along with his narrative work, Destin has also
directed two feature length documentaries.
Drakmar: A Vassal’s Journey premiered on HBO
Family in 2007 and won the Best Documentary
Award at the 2006 Comic Con. Born Without Arms
premiered on TLC/Discovery in 2009.
Destin’s second feature, Short Term 12 (based on
the short of the same title), premiered at the 2013
SXSW Film Festival, winning both the Audience and
Grand Jury Awards for Best Narrative Feature, and
was one of five to win a 2010 Nicholl Screenwriting
Fellowship from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts
and Sciences.
Special recognition for Short Term 12’s
spotlight on the moving stories of transiton
age foster youth in group homes
One of America’s most beloved comedians of all
time, Bill Cosby has captivated generations of fans
with his comedy routines, iconic albums and bestselling books such as Fatherhood. His comedy
transcends age, gender and cultural barriers.
unanimous critical praise. Life magazine described
the program as “a gentle, whimsical, warmhearted”
show whose “delicious ordinariness of its pleasures
and tribulations has given millions a fresh, laughtersplashed perspective on their own domestic lives.”
Cosby broke television’s racial barrier with I Spy,
becoming the first African American to costar on a
television series while winning three consecutive
Emmys. He created and produced the Emmywinning cartoon Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids,
which began airing in the 1970s and was made
into a film in 2004. The show, based on Cosby’s
childhood in Philadelphia, was designed to educate
and entertain.
Cosby’s first television special in 30 years, Far From
Finished, premiered on Comedy Central last fall. As
always, Cosby crafts stories around topics such as
marriage and parenting with his singular point of
view and renowned sense of humor.
The former Navy serviceman’s illustrious list of
accomplishments includes roles on the children’s
educational show Electric Company and creating
and producing the Emmy award winning Little Bill,
which is based on his best-selling book series.
Cosby has received the Kennedy Center Honors, the
Presidential Medal of Freedom (America’s highest
civilian honor), the Mark Twain Prize for American
Humor and the Marian Anderson Award.
Perhaps Cosby’s greatest contribution to American
entertainment and culture is The Cosby Show, about
a close-knit, upper middle class black family. Cosby
said his intent was to portray an American family.
Time magazine called the show “an encouraging
sign of maturity in matters of race.” The Cosby Show
dominated the No. One spot for years, earning nearly
Cosby’s current best seller, I Didn’t Ask to Be Born,
But I’m Glad I Was. Cosby talks about the Bible, being
a grandfather and his first love in his humorous and
insightful manner.
Cosby’s been busy raising a family, too. He married
the former Camille Hanks on January 25, 1964,
while she was still a student at the University of
Maryland. They raised four daughters (Erika, Erinn,
Ensa and Evin) and one son (Ennis) and now have
three grandchildren. The family resides in New
England.
Early Childhood Initiative: Our Early Childhood
Initiative advances our commitment to help
children ages 0-5. Through the Early Childhood
Training program, developed in partnership with
Child Development Institute, our volunteers gain a
sophisticated understanding of child development
which they bring into every interaction they have
with the child, the family, foster family, or other
caregivers.
Showing Up For Children
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) help
perform miracles for children who need them the
most—children who need committed adults who
will, in turn, help them become self-sufficient and
responsible men and women. Our community
volunteers come from all walks of life—from retired
teachers and social workers, to young professionals
and stay-at-home moms. These diverse individuals
have one thing in common: their commitment
to speaking for a child who has no voice. CASA
volunteers advocate for children by:
• INVESTIGATING: A judge appoints a CASA
to a child facing considerable obstacles that
threatens that child’s well-being. The CASA
investigates the child’s home life, and identifies
educational, physical and mental health
challenges. The CASA also meets with the adults
in the child’s life, including parents, teachers,
lawyers and social workers. The volunteer may
ensure that an Individualized Education Plan
(IEP) is developed by the child’s school which
addresses the child’s learning disability, or
that a child receives specialized health care
for a medical condition, or mental health care
that address the effects of trauma and abuse
experienced by the child. Sometimes, the child
may need all of these services.
• REPORTING and RECOMMENDING: The CASA
reports back to the judge all that they have
learned about the child’s home and school life—
and any efforts in place that may benefit (or be
detrimental) to the child’s well-being. The CASA
then makes recommendations to the judge that
may help the child live her best life—whether
that is reunification with a parent, living with
another relative, placement in a foster or group
home, or adoption. Sometimes, the CASA finds
enrichment opportunities, like music and sports
lessons, that improve the quality of the child’s
life. All in all, the CASA provides an extra set
of hands, ears, eyes and another heart—for
the court system and most importantly, for the
child.
• ADVOCATING and SUPPORTING: The CASA
is often the sole consistent adult anchor in
the child’s life—and an adult who is not paid
to care about her—and remains at the child’s
side to ensure that he receives the services
that he needs—and deserves. The volunteer
can devote unlimited time to the child, and
provides emotional support by getting to know
the child personally, showing him that someone
cares and wants him to grow to his fullest
potential. The CASA also ensures that the child
has the basics—clothes, school supplies and
most importantly, the attention and care that he
needs to thrive. And because the child knows
that he matters and that someone is fighting for
him, a strong, healthy bond develops between
the volunteer and the child. In most cases, the
CASA continues to advocate for the child until
he is placed in a stable and permanent home
with loving parents or guardians.
Improving the Lives of
LA’s Foster Children
We continue to expand and improve three vital
programs aimed to address the needs of children
from age 0 to 20.
Educational Advocacy: CASA of Los Angeles has
developed educational advocacy programs that
seek to remove obstacles faced by foster children.
We aim to ensure that a child receives consistent
education services that move them toward high
school graduation and ultimately, college or
vocational training
Transition Age Youth: Transitioning into adulthood is
a challenge for any adolescent but for youth who
have spent years in group or foster homes or who
are “aging out” or exiting the foster care system
without having secured a safe and permanent
home, the risks are substantial. CASA volunteers
help provide the tools and resources these young
adults need to become productive adults.
Goals and Accomplishments
Within the past three years, CASA of Los Angeles
has successfully transitioned from an organization
primarily funded by government support to one that
is 96 percent funded by philanthropy.
In FY2013, more than 429 volunteers provided over
100,000 hours of intensive advocacy service to 748
children—an increase from 632 in the previous
fiscal year. In addition to advocacy, we also provide
“day of court” assistance, where trained volunteers
orient children to court procedures and accompany
children to their court appearances. Called “Shelter
Care,” this program impacted the lives of 5,653
children last year.
In 2014, we aim to serve 1,000 children with
individual advocacy, and 5,000 children with onetime court appearances. We also plan to enhance the
training and volunteer specialization components of
our program, which will then substantially improve
two of the principal goals of advocacy: enhanced
well-being for children while they remain in foster
care, and speedier permanency through placement
with parents, other family members, or through
adoption.
And while we are proud of what we have
accomplished as an organization, we believe our
most significant accomplishments happen every day
in the work of our volunteers—when an overlooked
opportunity is found, a service is secured, a child
learns that she is valued, or an adult connection is
made that helps to keep a child safe and offers him
an opportunity to succeed in life.
T he Need for CASA of Los
Angeles Child Advocacy
Los Angeles County has more foster children than
any other county in the United States, with over
28,000 children in the dependency system. These
children have been removed from their homes
because of abuse, neglect, or abandonment and
placed under the supervision of a Dependency Court
Judge in conjunction with the Los Angeles County
Department of Children and Family Services. Many
children remain in foster care for extended periods,
moving among several foster homes.
Foster children in the Dependency Court system face
substantial obstacles in receiving the basic care that
all children deserve: emotional support, parental
guidance, and a stable and loving caregiver. More
than that, they often lack appropriate education and
vocational training, medical care, and the counseling
they need to grow into productive adults. Having a
trained adult advocate to speak up for the child in
court and in other pertinent aspects of their lives is
essential.
The CASA program is a proven, reliable and
economically-feasible model of support that has
successfully transformed thousands of young lives
in Los Angeles County.
