Supporting Australia’s Contemporary Music Industry 12. Australians @ MIDEM 14. Australian Delegates @ MIDEM 2011 3 Australia is at MIDEM to do business and the companies and individuals represented provide an exciting mix of veterans and first-timers all looking to make the most of the networking opportunities and to develop relationships with potential international partners. This booklet provides an overview of the Australian delegates at Midem 2011, their contact details and more importantly what they are looking to export/import. Only two years since its inception, SOUNDS AUSTRALIA has established itself as Australia’s recognized national export initiative, devised to deliver a cohesive and unified platform at international showcase market events, supported through a financial partnership between both Federal and State governments, along with peak music industry bodies. SOUNDS AUSTRALIA is committed to providing the best possible environment for Australian music businesses to expose their own unique selling points to their chosen export markets and for the attending delegates to be offered value-add networking opportunities in order to stimulate negotiations and real business outcomes, allowing them to meet their respective international objectives and advance their careers. SOUNDS AUSTRALIA aims to raise the profile and visibility of the Australian contemporary music sector within key international music markets, by centralising efforts through the financial investment from the following partners; APRA|AMCOS, The Australia Council for the Arts, PPCA, AMIN, VicRocks, Trade Queensland and AMPAL. SOUNDS AUSTRALIA plans to support Australia’s presence at key music markets whilst simultaneously putting Australia’s musical talents on the world map and promoting the nation as a truly creative cultural hub. In 2011 we’d like to welcome on board for the first time Nightlife Music, who will be on hand to display audio and video content from each of the exhibiting Australian companies through their own unique homegrown technology system. Come and visit us at Stand R35.08 to see for yourselves! We hope you have a productive and enjoyable conference and look forward to meeting as many of you as possible. Kind regards. Millie Millgate Export Music Producer, SOUNDS AUSTRALIA 4 Supporting Australia’s Contemporary Music Industry 5 APRA|AMCOS APRA|AMCOS work to ensure that composers, songwriters and publishers are rewarded whenever, and wherever, their musical works are played, performed or reproduced and we help Australian & New Zealand music consumers get access to the world’s musical repertoire. Australasian Performing Right Association Limited (APRA) was established in 1926 and now administers the performing and communication rights of 63,000+ composer, songwriter and music publisher members in Australia and New Zealand. Public performances of music include music used in pubs, clubs, fitness centres, shops, cinemas, festivals, whether performed live, on CDs or played on the radio or television. Communication of music covers music used for music on hold, music accessed over the internet or used by television or radio broadcasters. Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society Limited (AMCOS) collects and distributes mechanical royalties for the reproduction of its 7,600+ members’ musical works for many different purposes. These include the manufacture of CDs, music videos and DVDs, digital downloads and the sale of mobile phone ringtones, the use of production music and the making of radio and television programmes. Since 1997, APRA has managed the day-to-day operations of the AMCOS business. In 2009, APRA|AMCOS entered into a joint partnership with the Australia Council for the Arts to facilitate the Australian music industry’s collective export objectives. SOUNDS AUSTRALIA is the public face of this export strategy which represents a collective of interested parties made up of Government agencies, industry associations, commercial operators and others with a genuine interest in working together to support Australian music’s push in key markets. APRA|AMCOS is proud to support Australian music at MIDEM 2011. We are a national network made up of music industry associations from New South Wales (Music NSW), the Northern Territory (Music NT), Queensland (Q Music) and Western Australia (WAM). AMIN is currently working at establishing or re-establishing similar bodies across the rest of the country. AMIN’s strategic intent is to be the national voice for Australian contemporary music. AMIN gives the Australian music industry a voice to address issues across the industry, and a mechanism for delivery of projects which are in the interest of the industry Australia-wide. This leadership in Australian music has been much talked about but not present for many years. Our presence at MIDEM is part of an exciting emerging partnership with SOUNDS AUSTRALIA, which will see that initiative able to deliver even more benefits for Australian artists and businesses who are exporting or looking to export our great Australian music. Australia has long had a reputation for producing great live acts, and we continue to produce recording artists who are world class. By providing strategic support for export activities, SOUNDS AUSTRALIA will help fans and industry the world over to discover more great music from Australia, and AMIN are proud to be an active partner in making this happen. AMIN’s member organisations deliver a huge range of services which help to support pathways into and through music careers for aspiring artists, and through their memberships connect with a huge cross section of the Australian music industry. From information and resource services, through to internationally recognised events such as Big Sound (Queensland) and the WAMi Festival (Western Australia), the contribution of these bodies to Australian music over many years is massive. So, if you are an Australian music business at MIDEM and you’d like to know more about AMIN, or if you’d like to know more about Australian music including the stories being told by our Indigenous musicians, then please speak with AMIN’s Chairman Paul Bodlovich at the SOUNDS AUSTRALIA stand. AMIN Chairman Paul Bodlovich W: www.musicnsw.com/amin 7 Australasian Music Publishers Association (AMPAL) AMPAL represents the Australian and New Zealand music publishing industry and operates on behalf of its members in promoting and advocating the rights of music publishers, administrators of music copyright, songwriters and composers by representing their interest to government, commercial users, the wider music industry and the public. The AMPAL has now over 70 members and represents more than 90% of the economic value if the music-publishing sectors in the two countries. Over the past 12 months AMPAL together with a number of similar organizations dealing with copyright matters have formed an association to develop a number of educational programmes and strategies to combat the abuse of creators rights in the commercial and educational field. These organizations cover not only music but also the book, film and the electronic games industry. AMPAL also works closely with sister organizations around the World and is a member of the international forum. At MIDEM it is represented by the General Manager Peter Hebbes AM and as part of its ongoing commitment and engagement with the global industry AMPAL is very proud to be a key partner in the SOUNDS AUSTRALIA stand. Peter Hebbes AM (General Manager) E: [email protected] W: www.ampal.com.au PO Box 708, Crows Nest 1585 Australia 8 Phonographic Performance Company of Australia Ltd (PPCA) PPCA (the Phonographic Performance Company of Australia Ltd) represents the interests of Australian recording artists and record labels. We provide nonexclusive ‘blanket’ licences to businesses for the broadcast, public performance and communication of protected sound recordings and music videos. We currently license over 50,000 businesses across Australia such as bars, cafés, shopping centres, medical practices, hotels, real estate agencies and hairdressing salons, as well as radio and TV stations. At the end of each financial year, after deducting an amount equivalent to 2.5% for allocation to charitable, educational and like purposes (including the PPCA Performers’ Trust Foundation, which administers grants for the encouragement of the performing arts), PPCA distributes the remaining amount available to Australian recording artists and sound recording copyright owners (usually record labels). Record labels that control public performance, broadcast and communication rights in sound recordings, can choose to have PPCA help administer those rights by collecting license fees on their behalf. Artists that have retained the copyright in their sound recordings can register with PPCA as both an artist and as a record label. Supporting Australia’s musicians and music labels has and will continue to be an essential part of PPCA’s activities. PPCA is delighted to be able to help local labels take Australian music to the world through its partnership with SOUNDS AUSTRALIA for MIDEM in 2011. There are significant promotional and business opportunities around this event, and I am keen to pursue partnerships that can bring mutual value to our delegates and businesses alike. www.apra-amcos.com.au 19 APRA|AMCOS (UK) Cathi Ogden Living overseas often presents a special set of challenges for songwriters and composers. It can leave you feeling isolated without ready access to the resources, facilities and infrastructure needed to run your career, and in particular, the complexities around the collection of worldwide royalties. That’s why APRA has appointed Cathi Ogden - a UK-based Representative - to look after your APRA and AMCOS business needs. Cathi has had over 20 years experience as a songwriter and singer in Australia and the UK. Having had record deals with Hed Kandi, PWL (Pete Waterman LTD), EMI, Debut Records, Edel (Germany) and publishing deals with First Avenue Music Publishing, BMG Music Publishing and now Universal Music Publishing, Cathi has a wealth of first-hand experience and knowledge in the workings of the music industry. Cathi says “For the past 14 years I’ve been living and working in the UK as a songwriter and singer. Representing APRA here in the UK gives me the opportunity to use my experience to be of help to other Australian and New Zealand songwriters, whether fresh off the plane or long established. I want to make sure all our members are happy, well informed and getting the best possible service from their collection society. So please don’t hesitate to call or email me and I’ll always be happy to help you with your society questions and requests.” www.apra-amcos.com.au 20 Australia Council for the Arts Paul Mason The Australia Council for the Arts is the Australian Government’s arts funding and advisory body. Having visited the UK with Laura Marling in April 2010, the band returned to the UK in November and December for their own headline performances. The band played a showcase gig at the Mercury Lounge in New York City on their way to launch their debut EP ‘With Emperor Antarctica’ with Chess Club Records on December 8 at a sold out Luminaire show in London. To say the past year has been a whirlwind for Boy & Bear would not only be a cliché, but also an understatement. Since the band’s dulcet tones first hypnotised listeners across the radio waves in February 2009, Boy & Bear have found themselves in the spotlight. Their single ‘Mexican Mavis’ had the industry whispering and music fans clambering. Rumours of their live show quickly spread and Boy & Bear soon found themselves touring with the royalty of the folk revival, Angus & Julia Stone, Mumford & Sons and Laura Marling throughout Australia and in the UK.
