FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL: MR. KINGSLEY DALGLEISH
Year 11 Social Justice Retreat - Adelaide 2015
He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigners residing among you, giving them food
and clothing. And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt
(Deuteronomy 10:18-19)
49 of our Year 11 students visited Adelaide last week and had their eyes, their ears and
their hearts opened by their encounters with refugees and those who are enduring
homelessness.
Students and staff were privileged to be able to sit and speak with a number of
refugees who shared their personal stories of their necessity to leave their home lands
and to seek refuge in Australia. The students heard of the exorbitant costs these
people paid - both financially and mentally. We heard how they sold their
possessions to be able to pay in excess of $5000 each to sit in an open fishing boat
with up to 160 others for several days and nights without amenities or proper shelter.
Upon their arrivals in Australian waters they were placed in detention centres such as
Christmas Island where they were to stay for weeks, months or years. From the offshore detention centres they were then transferred to on-shore centres before being
given bridging visas to enable them to reside in our country. These refugees are,
however, unable to gain employment or undertake formal studies.
A number of our students were surprised to learn that asylum seekers are not illegal
and that we have an obligation to accept asylum seekers. Students learnt that there were much greater numbers of
refugees welcomed by Australia during Malcolm Fraser's reign as Prime Minister than there are currently, as well as the
fact that there has not been any refugee who has come to our country who has been charged with terrorism.
Students were also given a greater awareness of the number of Australians who are homeless. They were surprised to
learn that there are 105000 Australians who are homeless every single night, with more than a quarter of those
experiencing homelessness being under the age of 18 and a staggering 18000 under 12.
Students (and staff) were greatly moved by their experiences throughout the week and this was confirmed when the
students presented in front of their peers about what they had learnt and what they will take away from the Retreat.
I encourage everyone to take the time to speak with the Year 11 students about the experience.
Finally, I wish to share the following prayer:
God of Safety, We remember that Mary and Joseph escaped to safety in Egypt when Herod tried to kill baby Jesus
and we remember how Mary MacKillop found safe places for homeless mothers and children.
Let our country now find room for the refugees who come begging for safety.
Let our hearts be big enough to welcome them so that they can forget their terror and sadness and find peace here.
Let us give them a home and a good future in our country.
We ask this in the name of Jesus, who knew what it was like to be a refugee.
Amen.

WIMMERA LEGACY JUNIOR PUBLIC SPEAKING AWARD.

Congratulations to both Emily Severin (Yr 9) and Kyra Clarke (Yr 7) for their respective first and second
place finishes in the Wimmera Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award for 2015. Also performing creditably
were Nina Jacobsen and Storm Brockenbrow, both from Yr 9.
Emily and Kyra both won framed certificates, Parker pens and vouchers from Latus Jewellers; the kind
sponsor of this annual event. The two girls will now proceed to the Preliminary Final, to be held in Bendigo
during the month of September, and will proudly represent the Wimmera region.
Once again congratulations to all four girls for their bravery, in standing up and speaking publicly in front
of a large audience, and for the hard work they put in to prepare and learn their speeches.

2016 Inaugural trip to Japan! Would you like to be a participant?!?
At the end of Term 1 2016 St Brigid’s College hopes to run its first school trip to
Japan! Depending on the range of student interest, it may only be available to
students in Year 10 or above (Year 10 in 2016, that is) but will not be restricted
to students who have studied Japanese, as the subject has only been taught at
the College since last year.
Current planning is that the trip will commence on the second-last weekend of
Term 1, and continue until about the second Wednesday of the school holidays,
comprising 19 days altogether. Students will miss the last week of Term 1.
A meeting of all interested students and at least one parent, please, will be held
on Wednesday 22nd July at 7:30 p.m. in the Library. The proposed itinerary,
expectations, and an outline of probable cost (which will depend on numbers
interested and, of course, fluctuations in international monetary activity) will be
discussed, and parents will be invited to indicate a firm interest so that
pragmatic planning can begin. Further meetings, which will include orientation of our students towards what
to expect and how to prepare for the trip, will occur once initial participant numbers and level of interest
have been identified.
Help needed please! URGENT!
One of the host families who has been allocated a Japanese daughter for the three-week period in Term 3
(July 19th until Aug 7th) has had to withdraw from the hosting group. We are seeking a replacement family
with some urgency: it is important that we let our sister-school community in Japan know that there has had
to be a change in the original group identified. If you can help, even for a part of the time (the student
concerned can be “shared” between two families), please contact Jeni Allen as soon as possible at the
College. The student who is currently “homeless” is a girl, aged 15, and very much looking forward to her
time in Australia. There is a full package of support and orientation about what to expect provided for all
families involved. If your attention has been caught by the information about the trip to Japan next year
provided above, maybe you could see this as a way of really preparing your son or daughter for their time in
Japan!

YEAR 8 FOOTBALL REPORT – BRENDAN RYAN SHIELD
A very successful day was had by the St Brigid’s Year 8 boys football side, taking home the Brendan Ryan shield. In the first 2
games at Coughlin Park against Dimboola and Marian College, the boys played some very good team football running in numbers
and using the ball well which resulted in a 112 and 46 point wins and a place in the Grand Final versus Horsham College.
In the Grand Final played on the smaller Dudley Cornell Park, the Saints boys were able to use their height to advantage in the first
half finding targets up forward and skipped away to a 3 goal advantage at half time. The second half was an arm wrestle early on
with both teams finding it hard to score. Horsham College outscored St Brigid’s in the second half, however ran out of time and the
Saints boys were able to hold on to a 9 point win.

Year 7 Netball
On Tuesday 9th of June, the Year 7 girls participated in the Black Ranges Netball competition. We had two
teams competing on this day. Despite the day being icy cold and true winter weather, students were
enthused and positive about taking the court.
St Brigid’s 1 team played extremely well together, beginning each game with a loud ‘saints’ cheer. Ella
Janetzki and Ella Burgess were key goal shooters and moved well together in and around the ring . They
helped support the team in holding onto the draw in the first game against Horsham College.
The St Brigid’s 1 second game was against Ararat. The fast momentum of the mid court, which included
Jessica; Sereina; and Tahli, proved too fast for the opposition and Maggie’s height in defence meant the
girls were clear favourites.
Although the temperature decreased, the girls’ spirit was high as we tackled our third and fourth game,
playing Stawell and Holy Trinity respectively. Both games were won convincingly, with Kyra and Ella
Janetzki both taking their turn in centre and providing a strong support for the entire length of the court.
The versatility of Kaleisha was another important aspect to our team, whether she played in defence or
attack.
As we began finals, our first opposition was Marian College, who was undefeated alike to us. It was a
tough, well fought game, and our defence worked extremely well in keeping us on par with the opposing
players. Danae Martin was pivotal, gaining multiple intercepts in the ring and down the court. Despite
being defeated 14 to 11, the overall game showed great teamwork from the girls and each player took on
The St Brigid’s second team, coached by Mardi Isbel, consisted of Chloe Kelm, Georgia Pilgrim, Abbey
Olver, Lily Olver, Caitlin Ballantine, Lauren Velthuis, Madeleine Arnel & Kyra Duffy. The girls started the
day well with two wins from just as many games, over Dimboola and Murtoa College, and with Lily and
Abbey Olver’s strong presence in the Centre, the girls proved too strong.
St Brigid’s 2 then played Marian College, the eventual winner, and at half time were down by just two
goals. Chloe Kelm and Georgia Pilgrim’s accurate goal shooting was a key factor in this. In the second
half the girls continued their fantastic team play, but it was not enough to get the win.
After their loss, St Brigid’s Two were determined to get back on the winner’s list and did just that with a
close 1-point win over Edenhope College, with Madeleine Arnel’s tight defense and strong rebounds being
a standout. This meant the team finished second in their pool, and were set to play the first placed team
from pool 1, Horsham College, in the first final.
After their best efforts, the girls lost by 4 goals.
CAREERS NEWS
On Tuesday 23rd June, Year 10, 11 and 12 students will be attending the Western Victorian Careers Expo being held
at the Wimmera Events Centre, Longerenong. It is a great opportunity for students to be inspired, to be informed
and to explore options.
Year 10 students will spend time preparing for the expo during Pathways to the Future classes next week. All Year
11 and 12 students will be emailed information about the expo and how to prepare to get the most out it!
As a parent you can also support your child by helping them to prepare for their time at the expo. Click on the
following link to the Careers Expo website. Check out the list of exhibitors, seminars, Try a Trade and the
Universities present for the Tertiary Information Sessions. On the website there are student activity sheets that
can be used by the students to help plan their time at the expo.

PROGRAM FOR THE DAY:
All Year 10, 11 and 12 students will leave school at 10am (after period 1) traveling by bus to the Wimmera Events
Centre.
Seminars start at 10.30am. The Year 12 students will attend the Tertiary Information Session that will run from
11.30am to 1pm.
The students will leave the Expo at 1.30pm returning to school for period 5&6. They will have 3 hours to attend
seminars, seek out exhibitors and to ask questions and gather information.
An excursion notice will be emailed to every Year 10-12 student next week. Parents are invited and welcomed to
