St. Clair County MAY 2016 Lori Warchuck’s Desk WHAT MAKES A GOOD 4-H CLUB?* Almost anyone can tell you what makes a good club or a special member. The hard part is living up to those answers. The usual responses come to mind quickly: sharing, commitment and enthusiasm. A good club listens to its members and respects different opinions. It meets the needs and interests of individuals and creates a secure "family" atmosphere. Members keep coming and enjoy themselves when they do. The best members will freely share their ideas and never does it exclude anyone’s ideas. When another member needs help, they make the time to be there. They refuse to let personal goals overshadow the wellbeing of the group. A good club formed of such people works together, plays together and learns together. It opens the door to new opportunities and challenges its members to do their best. It encourages responsibility and praises all efforts from the baking of a cake to the raising of a cow. Anyone will tell you that a good club is also innovative and eager to help in the community. It shares activities with other groups. If a river needs cleaning or wild flowers need planting, a good club or member jumps at the chance. None of this matters, of course, if the club is no fun. Even the best organized and most productive groups can bore members into fits of thumb twiddling. The promise of a good time is the carrot that will lure in the members meeting after meeting. Remember that a good 4-H club is a family in itself. Be the best member possible by helping your 4-H family grow strong together. What could possibly be wrong with that? Only one thing. Winter projects are over… ...but it was a great year! 4-H horse project and horseless horse project members from all over St. Clair County (and even a few from Macomb) met throughout the winter to learn about everything equine and have lots of fun with old and new friends. A large group of 4-H’ers led by Maryann Moskal, Linda Taylor, and Sharon Patterson learned about proper horse care, nutrition, tack and equipment, how to make horse treats, and even the history of show clothes among other topics. Several more 4-H members prepared to compete in hippology and horse judging, led by Heather Mudge and Lucy Brown. Amy Balon, Sue Cook, and Cassandra Leicht even opened their barns up to winter project members so they could practice horse judging with real horses and riders. We can’t thank them enough for their help! This year’s winter projects season was punctuated by successful competitions for hippology and horse judging contestants. Several horse judging contestants made their first trip of the season to Michigan State University on February 5th and 6th where they learned to judge pattern classes like trail and reining, participated in a judging contest, and enjoyed a fantastic tack sale! Junior Novice contestant Makayla Schroeder took home the win in her division at her very first contest. Junior Regular contestants Sharon Torello and Jaelyn Sutphin also turned in strong scores, finishing second and sixth, respectively. In the Senior Novice division Madilyn Morris and Felishia Block ranked 3rd and 4th in a large field. (Attention horseless horse members--Madilyn is horseless. You can do this too!) Senior Regular contestant Hailey Moses finished 8th, with teammates Carrie Brown and Samanthia Enright finishing just out of the top ten. On April 2nd, a small but dedicated group of horse judging contestants, Carrie Brown, Sharon Torello, and Breanna Ngow, woke up long before the sunrise on the first day of Spring Break and made the long trip to DeKalb Indiana for an invitational contest. Sharon came in 5th in the Junior Division, both in reasons and overall. Great job! While Carrie and Breanna didn’t make it to the podium in the Senior Division, they got to hone their reasons skills while preparing and delivering four sets of reasons (that’s a lot) on classes including Draft Horse halter. Girls, we’re glad you continued with the judging project after being surprised with four sets of reasons in Indiana! All of this was in preparation for the Equine Educational Expo (E3) held at Michigan State University on April 22nd and 23rd. E3 is a statewide contest for 4-H and FFA participants in the areas of communications, hippology, horse bowl, and horse judging. This year St. Clair County 4-H sent eleven contestants to E3 in two contest areas, hippology (the study of all things horse) and horse judging. We would like to thank the St. Clair County 4-H Horse Leaders Board for sponsoring the entry fees and team shirts for all participants! All of our competitors did a fantastic job and we’d love to see even more St. Clair County representation next year! 4 LOCALPROGRAM NOTES Equine Educational Expo Results for St. Clair County: Senior Hippology Rachel Remy: 8th in judging, 5th in slides, 8th on the exam, 4th in stations, and 4th overall Sara Scott: 4th in judging, 10th on the exam, 8th in stations, and 6th overall From left to right: Madilyn Morris, Hailey Moses, Jaelyn Sutphin, Breanna Ngow, Sharon Torello, Sammy Enright, Shauna McIntosh, Carrie Brown, and Felishia Block Junior Horse Judging—Sharon Torello: 1st in reasons, 3rd overall and Jaelyn Sutphin: 3rd in reasons, 2nd overall Senior Novice Horse Judging—Breanna Ngow: 2nd in reasons, 5th overall Above from left to right: Hailey Moses and Jaelyn Sutphin and far right Sharon Torello Shauna McIntosh: 8th overall—3rd in team reasons and 3rd place team overall (Breanna, Shauna, and Madilyn Morris) Senior Horse Judging—Felishia Block: 5th in reasons, 2nd overall (taking home a small scholarship from the Norma Agnew Memorial Scholarship Fund!)
