The Brain Injury Association
of Washington’s
Sixth Annual Gala, Dinner & Auction
Dear Friends of BIAWA,
Welcome to our 6th Annual Gala, Dinner & Auction. We are overwhelmed by the
support you have provided which has allowed us to fill this room with compassionate
individuals who care about the important work we do on a daily basis. The energy and
support from this event motivates us throughout the year to carry forward our mission
“to increase public awareness, support and hope for those affected by brain injury
through education, assistance, and advocacy.”
The BIAWA continues to provide leadership at the state and national levels in many
areas, including concussion prevention. Our ongoing work with the NFL and other
advocates has extended passage of the Lystedt Law to more than 40 states. We have
diligently utilized funds from previous galas and our state contract to exponentially
increase the level and quality of services provided. This includes — for the first time ever
— expansion of Pediatric Resource Management throughout the state of Washington.
While many of you are long-time and professional colleagues, it is important that our
new friends joining us tonight are aware of the epidemic proportions of this issue.
A brain injury is not a one-time “event;” it is a life-changing moment that will forever
impact the life of the survivor, their family and their community. We at the BIAWA will
continue to work diligently to provide even greater connections to services, activities
and training for all; and we look toward your support tonight in meeting this increasing
need.
We ask you to raise your bid cards high and often to become an essential and
personal part of our mission. The life of any one of us, young or old, can change in
an instant, and the need for our services grows since more than 10,000 individuals in
the State of Washigton incur a brain injury every year. Tonight we share our vision of
a world where Brain Injury is prevented and every individual already affected by its
impact benefits from information and resources that maximize his/her quality of life.
Thank you for joining us tonight.

Auctioneer
John Curley
John Curley swears he doesn’t deserve the life that he has, and
believes that if karma does exist he will be coming back the next
time around as a dung beetle. Before that happens John has much
work to do. He hosts a radio show on KIRO 97.3 weeknights
from 7 to 10 p.m. He serves as an elected official in the city of
Sammamish as a city councilman. John is also President of John
Curley Auctions. He auctioneers for 100 nonprofits a year and
helps raise 2.3 million dollars a month. In his spare time Curley
competes in International Ironman competitions and travels the
country as a motivational speaker. He wears many hats and has
many titles but likes best when two very small people, that look a
little bit like him, call him “dad.”
Master of Ceremonies
Jim Dever
Jim Dever is a reporter for “Evening Magazine” and produces
the show’s popular “DoubleTake” and “SmallTalk” segments. He
is also a documentary filmmaker, handstand skateboarder and
amateur Elvis impersonator. Jim has won 16 Emmy Awards for
writing, hosting, reporting and producing. He has appeared
on the Oprah Winfrey show and was featured in the Guinness
Book of World Records for coming up with the world’s shortest
commercial. In his spare time, he enjoys stunt pogo stick jumping
and spending time with his family in West Seattle. Dever rhymes
with “whatever.”

Honored Guest
General (Ret.) Peter Chiarelli
former Vice Chief of Staff of the Army
General Peter Chiarelli is both a hometown hero and a national leader. He
hails from Seattle and is a graduate of Seattle University and the University of
Washington. He continued his education at the U.S. Naval Command and
Staff College and the National War College.
General Chiarelli is recently retired from the U.S. Army after almost 40 years
of service. As the Army’s Vice Chief of Staff, he was a tireless advocate for
service members and veterans seeking treatment for traumatic brain injury
and post-traumatic stress injury. Under his leadership, the U.S. military made
important improvements in diagnosing and treating these injuries.
General Chiarelli is now the CEO of One Mind for Research, an independent
nonprofit organization bringing together health-care providers, researchers
and academics — on a global scale — to rapidly develop new treatments and
cures for all illnesses and disorders of the brain. We are proud to honor his
service to this country and this community.

The Brain Injury Association of
Washington (BIAWA)
The BIAWA’s vision is a world where brain injury is prevented and every person
already affected by its impact benefits from resources that maximize his/her quality of
life. The BIAWA provides the following support services to all free of charge:
The Washington Traumatic Brain Injury Resource Center
Assisting callers as they navigate the complex needs that arise as a result of Brain
Injury. Resource Line Specialists are available to provide support, information and
direct referrals to sources of critical support. Our database includes more than 2000
resources vetted for their knowledge and experience working with brain injury.
Adult Resource Management
Working one-on-one – Resource Managers connect individuals to specific resources and
support in their communities while working toward individualized, identified goals. This
includes applying for SSDI, finding appropriate medical care, and finding placement in
a facility.
Pediatric Resource Management
Resource Managers seek out specific resource to meet the needs of children and youth
while enhancing the caregiving capabilities of families to support both academic and
social success within their schools and communities. This includes obtaining IEP/504
plans, placing in specialty schools as needed, and working with knowledgeable health
professionals to ensure safely returning to play.
Outreach and Trainings
In order to increase the quality of services received by survivors and their family
members, BIAWA is available to provide free customized comprehensive trainings to
service providers such as Social Workers, School Counselors, Nurses, Assisted Living
Facility Staff and many more. To request training for your staff, please contact our office.
Support Groups and Social Activities
The BIAWA has more than 20 affiliated support groups throughout the state of
Washington and connects with more than 15 others. Information on these important
social and support connections is provided to all callers and available on our website.
In addition, we provide a number of larger outings, social activities for individuals,
including trips to the Tulip Festival, baseball games, winter festivals and more. All
provided through your generous support.

Our presentation tonight profiles how brain injury impacts the many aspects of
the survivor and his or her family, and how, through your support, the BIAWA
has been able to provide assistance to these unique individual needs. Life after
a brain injury is never the same for those affected. It is the hope and passion of
all of us in the room that our work together will make a difference in the lives of
those we serve. It is the focus of the staff and board of the BIAWA every day to
make that difference!

We know that the life of any one of us, young or old, male or female, with
means or without, can change dramatically in an instant following brain
trauma. And that the need for support services grows each year.
The Brain Injury Association of Washington (BIAWA) is a vital resource in
our community and state, and we proudly support its mission.
The attorneys at ADLER GIERSCH PS are available for consultations,
referrals, and association on traumatic brain injury cases.
