Coding and Calculating remains strong, with Auction Team Breker still the leading firm in the field.
Our Spring auction saw an Enigma M4 cipher
machine of 1942 fetch € 135,260 / US$ 146,000.
In the same auction an example of Thomas de
Colmar’s Arithmomètre in Boulle case, but without brass inlay, brought € 46,700 / US$ 50,400. More
memorable still was an original Kenbak-1 Digital
Computer – recognised as the first commercial personal computer – for € 41,800 / US$ 45,100.

An automaton with a similar theme, the "Clown sur la Lune" by
Parisian firm Roullet et Decamps, exceeded its pre-sale estimate
at € 41,800 / US$ 45,100, while a Ragtime Musician produced by
Adolph Müller for the French market too sold well above estimate
for € 24,600 / US$ 26,550. Also from Germany was a rare Märklin
Limousine, with original paint, for € 8,000 / US$ 8,600.

The Enigma cipher machine is one of the most recognisable images of the Second World War. Developed for the
German armed forces, the Enigma’s impenetrable cipher
remained uncracked by British code-breakers at Bletchley Park until the capture of a scuppered submarine and
the assistance of Polish cryptologists finally yielded the
key to the machine’s more than 22 billion code combinations.

NJ, USA. The only surviving example. Unrestored condition.

American industrialist Oberlin Smith was
not only a pioneer of magnetic recording
technology twenty years before the Danish
scientist Valdemar Poulsen was credited with
its invention, but in 1921 also designed and
built the first practical jukebox. The example offered here is based on Smith’s improved
patent of 1926 and believed to be the only surviving example of its kind.

department head of Antique Toys, Dolls &
Advertising with a well-known East Coast
auctioneer.
Andrew now resides in Portland, Oregon
with his family. He is excited to be joining
Auction Team Breker and welcomes your

Principal of the Royal Institute for the Deaf and Dumb, Copenhagen,
Malling-Hansen designed his unique ergonomic typewriter in 1865. Handbuilt in brass, the writing ball featured a hemisphere of 54 engraved typebars and revolutionised written communication.
So successful was the invention, that the famous German philosopher and
author Friedrich Nietzsche ordered his own model in 1881 to help overcome problems writing with failing eyesight. Malling-Hansen’s invention
is regarded as the first commercially produced typewriter.
