Gabi Sanchez and Larry Soriano traveled from
Palm Springs to take part in the Fall Evening
Dance, hosted by the Loma Linda Senior Center.
Nearly three years ago, 16year dancer Reuben Aguilar
retired from teaching ballroom
dancing at the Loma Linda
Veteran’s Hospital, and redirected his efforts to those at
the Loma Linda Senior Center.
Surprised that there was not
already one, Aguilar worked
with the City and the Center to
create a Ballroom Dance program, that is open to all ages.
Aguilar’s wife, Rita, said “He

BAG). Each of the cities must
create a five year capital improvement plan to participate
in the funding.
In support of City Manager, T. Jarb Thaipejr’s recommendation, the City Council
directed funds ($285,000) be
spent on slurry sealing Redlands Blvd. from Mt. View
Ave. to California Street; Mt.
View Ave. from Barton Road
to the I-10 Freeway; Beaumont
Avenue from Mt. View to the
railroad tracks and Poplar
Street from Van Leuven Street
to the San Timoteo bridge in
2011-12.
Another $30,000 was ap-
proved by the Council to seismically retrofit the Anderson
Street Bridge over the Union
Pacific Railroad crossing this
year.
Under the five-year plan, the
City Manager recommended
the City perform slurry sealing totaling another $200,000
on four more streets and the
widening of Beaumont Avenue on its south side from Mt.
View to Bryn Mawr Ave. at a
cost of nearly $100,000 during
the fiscal year 2012-13.
Thaipejr has said that during the next five years over
$1,400,000 of Measure I funding will be spent on slurrying
streets, traffic maintenance,
and other improvements.
The City Council is in full
support of this plan.

doing this.”
Thelma Korpman, the president of the USA Dance- IE

Millennials Using Technology to Launch Entrepreneurial Careers
(ARA) - American entrepreneurism has been around
as long as the country, but that
spirit is getting younger every
day. Fifteen percent of self-employed Americans are younger
than 35, according to the U.S.
Small Business Administration,
and that percentage is growing.
Recent reports place the unemployment rate at 54 percent
for Americans younger than 25.
Driven in part by the decline in
traditional job opportunities and
in part by the innovative spirit
that has long defined American
small business, members of the
millennial generation are going
into business for themselves.
And they’re using the same
technologies that they’ve grown
up with in their personal lives to
facilitate their success as smallbusiness operators.
Because the younger generation grew up using technology,
they are using their knowledge
to help them follow their en-
trepreneurial spirit - relying on
technology to start their own
business. Because of this use
of technology, young
entrepreneurs should
look to these five areas where technology
can help launch their
new business:
1. Social media

to the Internet, Facebook and Twitter, and
texting is an everyday
part of their lives. To
avoid social overload
and streamline communication, use tools
that help bring networks together in one
place. For example,
users can connect Facebook to
Hotmail and chat right from inside their inbox, as well as keep
LinkedIn and Facebook contact
lists organized with auto-con-
tact linking across Hotmail and
Windows Live Messenger.
2. Network and build rela-
will be connecting with each
other in cyberspace. Youthful
small-business owners are us-
tionships
Millennial business owners have grown up in a mobile,
digital world. So have their customers, and those customers
ing social networking and digital media to communicate with
customers about products and
services. They also rely on a variety of mobile devices for their
networking needs and choose
operating systems that allow
them to communicate across
a broad range of devices while
working from anywhere.
3. Increase personal productivity
Streamlining time spent on
tasks means increased productivity - and improved profitability. Young entrepreneurs use
technology, such as Windows 7
Professional, to get around their
PCs faster than ever with oneclick access to the information
they need to get their jobs done.
Performance
improvements
mean less time hassling with the
computer and more time talking
to customers.
4. Help improve security
Security is a concern for all
business owners, especially
those of small businesses who
can least afford the costs associated with security breaches.
Small-business owners need to
ensure that their customers feel secure, and
products such as Windows 7 Professional
help achieve that. The
operating system protects computer networks from malicious
cyberattacks and helps
safeguard
sensitive
information, such as
credit card numbers
and employee and customer information.
5. Reduce costs and
save money
Keeping costs under
control and saving money are key elements of
any successful business
operation, yet new businesses
may struggle with these essentials during their first years of
operation. Technology can help
companies improve efficiency
- and save money - by reducing time spent on traditional filing and retrieval of documents,
bill paying and invoicing, and a
myriad of other business functions that are time-consuming
when done by hand.
Young entrepreneurs are assuming responsibility for the
change they want to see in the
business world, creating new
opportunities for themselves
and new ways of meeting consumer demand. With optimism,
self-confidence and the right
high-tech tools, youthful smallbusiness owners are poised to
redefine the spirit of American
entrepreneurism for generations
to come. More information
about technology that can help
new businesses is available at

Include Your Pets in Your Evacuation and Disaster Planning
(ARA) - All too often when
a disaster strikes, our fourlegged friends are left to fend
for themselves and sometimes
end up lost, injured or killed.
The best way to avoid this tragic scenario is to have a wellthought-out disaster plan that
includes Fido, so you know
where to go and what to take.
“Many public shelters that
are set up for disaster victims
don’t accept pets so you need
to find out in advance which
shelters or hotels along your
evacuation route will accept
animals,” says Lyman Munson,
vice president of risk services
for Fireman’s Fund Insurance
Company. “It is tragic, but people have actually died because
they were ordered to evacuate
a disaster area but stayed because they did not want to leave
their pets.”
With so many different potential disasters, advance planning is the best way for everyone to survive a catastrophe
and get their lives back to normal as soon as possible.
Fireman’s Fund offers the
following tips
to protect your
pets in the event
of a disaster:
1. Have a disaster plan
Put together
a list of boarding
facilities
and veterinarians along your
evacuation
route and outside your area
that might be
able to shelter
your pets in an
emergency.
Talk to your vet, the local
humane society or the local
emergency management agency for information regarding
community evacuation plans
that include pets.
Make advance arrangements
to have a friend or neighbor
pick up your pets in the event
you are not at home when a disaster strikes. And, plan where
you will meet or how you will
reach each other.
2. Make a grab-and-go di-
saster kit for your pets
Just as you should have a disaster kit for your family, containing important papers and
other key items, you should
prepare a similar kit for your
pets. It should contain the following:
* Medication and medical
records (including proof of rabies vaccination) in a waterproof container.
* Leashes, harnesses, crates
and carriers for transporting
your pet.
* A muzzle,
if your pet requires one.
* Food and
water for at
least
three
days.
* Cat litter
and litter box.
* Comfort
toys.
*
Recent
photo of your
pet in case you
become separated.
* Name and
phone number of your veterinarian.
3. If you must evacuate, take
your pets
Be prepared to leave early;
do not wait for an official evacuation as you might be ordered
to leave your pets behind.
Make sure your pet is wearing up-to-date identification.
Include the phone number of a
friend or relative outside your
area in case your pet gets lost
and you cannot be reached.
And mark the crate or carrier
with similar information.
Birds should be transported
in a secure travel cage or carrier.
4. After the disaster
Once you return to your
home, do not allow your pets to
roam loose right away. While
you assess the damage, keep
dogs on a leash and other animals in their carriers.
Familiar landmarks and
smells might be gone, and your
pet may become disoriented.
Pets can easily get lost in such
situations, so give them some
time to get used to their “new”
surroundings. Be patient. Try
to get your pets back into their
normal routines as soon as possible, and be on the lookout for
stress-related behavioral problems; if these persist, talk to
your veterinarian.
“Planning for your pets
ahead of time will relieve stress
and help you and your family
to focus on safety during and
after a disaster,” says Munson.
“Safety should be your primary
consideration.”
How to ‘Green Up’ Your Home, Office or Dorm with Houseplants
(ARA) - Looking for a fresh
new look for your home or office or want to add some color
and cool for your college digs?
Houseplants are always in style.
For an easy transformation for
any space, houseplants add high
impact and eco flair that rival expensive makeovers. Whether
you choose orchids or Bonsai,
houseplants fit
any
lifestyle,
mood and taste.
From finding the perfect
plant to decorating ideas at your
fingertips, check
out the new digital magazine
GrowingStyle.
This free download and app is
your go-to resource for the
hottest plants,
green
living
tips, expert advice and lots of
eco eye candy.
Whether
you’re a long
time plant collector or novice, these tips
from top garden
experts show
just how easily houseplants
will “green up”
your life.
The air in there. Did you
know that houseplants do double
duty? They not only add beauty
to indoor spaces but also clean
our indoor air and remove nasty toxins from carpets, paint,
household cleaners, printers and
even furniture.
“Besides what they give back
in aesthetics, one of the greatest
things houseplants do is provide
much needed humidity in the
winter months and freshen the
air year round,” says Justin Hancock, editor of Better Homes and
Gardens online (BHG.com).
Plant hunter and expert, Mike
Rimland, says that houseplants
help clean indoor toxins commonly found in homes, apartments and offices. “What houseplants you choose and where
they’re placed are important
considerations to maximize air
filtering benefits.” Rimland suggests houseplants
like
peace
lilies
for bathrooms
and Sanseveria and Golden
Pothos for your
entryway and
living spaces.
“They’re easy
to grow and can
help
remove
volatile organic
compounds
found in cleaners,
carpets
and furniture
like benzene,
formaldehyde,
acetone
and
xylene.”
Set
the
mood. From
added drama
to a touch of
whimsy, houseplants instantly
liven up any
room or office
with
natural
beauty and add
a funky touch
of
greenery
to boxy dorm
rooms.
For happy plants, Rimland
recommends you assess your
rooms for optimal lighting conditions and care requirements,
follow the plant care guidelines
on the tags and choose plants
that fit your lifestyle.
Want to create a quick and
easy upscale look or a serene
retreat? Nothing beats orchids,
arranged in simple or elaborate
containers, for high impact drama and Zen-like simplicity.
“As a great ‘everyman’ plant,
orchids can’t be beat,” says Hancock. “Mini orchids are easy to
grow and perfect for a centerpiece or a thing of beauty and
tranquility alone on a windowsill.”
Green-up your space with
living walls. If you have limited
space or want a visually dramatic, high impact design for a
room, living walls are the ticket.
Not only can they improve air
quality, but they are quite a conversation piece, adding instant
“wow factor” to any room.
Rimland says that living
green walls are a great way to
maximize the benefits of house-
plants to purify and beautify
spaces. “Whether you buy one
of the new kits available or have
a professional install your living
wall, your rooms will spring to
life with living art you create.”
Go green and groovy. Looking for fun and easy houseplants
that are practically a no-brainer?
Water-retaining,
light-loving,
easy-care succulents and cacti
are virtually indestructible and
come in many colors, shapes
and varieties. So mix them up
in containers for a visual feast
that draws the eye and soothes
the soul.
“Succulents are great-looking, low maintenance plants that
make it easy for everyone to
bring the outdoors inside,” adds
Hancock.

NUHW Members and CA Nurses AssociationMembers
to Engage in Largest Strike in Kaiser’s History
The National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW) recently
issued an official notice to Kaiser
Permanente of the union’s plan
to engage in a statewide strike by
4,000 Kaiser caregivers should
management continue to refuse
to bargain in good faith toward
a fair contract that safeguards
quality patient care and that
leaves workers’ benefits intact.
Despite enjoying record
profits over the last two
years, Kaiser administrators are insisting on implementing major reductions to
workers’ healthcare coverage and retirement benefits.
NUHW members have refused to roll over and accept
management’s demands, and
are holding the line against
cuts which Kaiser intends to
impose upon tens of thousands more employees represented by other unions as their
contracts come up for renewal
over the next several years.
The California Nurses Association, which represents 17,000
Registered Nurses at Kaiser,
will join NUHW members in
the largest strike in Kaiser’s history. Workers will walk off the
job for one-, two- and three-day
durations from September 21st
to 23rd.
Despite its tax-exempt status
as a “non-profit” charity, Kaiser
Permanente has made $5.7 billion
in profits since 2009. In the first
six months of this year alone, the
company generated $1.6 billion
in profits. Kaiser’s Chief Execu-
tive Officer, George Halvorson,
was paid close to $8 million in
total compensation in 2009, and
numerous top managers at Kaiser enjoy lavish salaries, bonuses
and perks, including as many as
eight separate pension plans per
executive.
In spite of this enviable financial performance, Kaiser
administrators are insisting on
shifting the costs of healthcare
coverage onto Kaiser workers,
replacing workers’ defined benefit pension plan with an inferior
defined contribution plan, and
eliminating healthcare coverage
altogether for future retirees. At
the same time, Kaiser continues
to refuse to agree to implement
contractually enforceable safe
staffing guidelines for nurses at
Kaiser LAMC, and staffing levels sufficient to guarantee timely
access to appropriate care for
mental health patients throughout the state.
Also in spite of its record profits, this year Kaiser has imposed
double digit rate increases on

hundreds of thousands of California policyholders and the small
businesses that employ them, as
well as on cash-strapped California school districts that are laying off thousands of teachers in
order to close budget deficits.
NUHW and CNA caregivers are part of a growing number of union workers who are
confronting multi-billion dollar
corporations attempting to
shift healthcare costs onto
the backs of employees and
their families. This month’s
walkout will follow a major
multi-state strike by tens of
thousands of Verizon workers on the East Coast engaged
in a similar struggle to resist
cuts in healthcare benefits
by an enormously profitable,
brand-name corporation. The
Kaiser strike will also occur
as tens of thousands of grocery workers in Southern California prepare for the possibility
of a multi-employer strike over
the cost to workers of healthcare
coverage.
Conversely, Kaiser Permanente, whose mission is “to provide affordable, high quality
healthcare services,”1 can now
be counted among a number of
major employers that are actively
undermining the affordability of
care for thousands of American
families.
The strike will take place
at dozens of Kaiser hospitals
and clinics from Sacramento
to San Diego. At Kaiser’s flagship Southern California hospital, Kaiser Los Angeles Medical Center (LAMC), over 1,100
NUHW-represented Registered
Nurses will walk off the job for
three days beginning on Wednesday, September 21st. Throughout
the Southern California region,
about 1,200 Social Workers
and Psychologists will engage
in a two-day strike on September 21st and 22nd. In Northern
California, approximately 1,500
mental health professionals and
optical workers will walk off
the job for 24 hours beginning at
6am on the 22nd.
Members of the CNA will
join NUHW caregivers on the
picket line in a 24-hour sympathy
strike on September 22nd. Although CNA nurses were spared
the cuts Kaiser is attempting to
force on other union workers in
their last round of contract negotiations, they understand clearly
that whatever Kaiser executives are able to force upon their
NUHW co-workers today they
will almost certainly attempt to
impose on the nurses in the very
near future.
“Kaiser is experiencing the
most profitable period in its history, and executives like George
Halvorson are being rewarded
with salaries and benefits that
compete with Fortune 500
CEOs,” said LaNeta Fitzhugh,
a Registered Nurse at Kaiser
LAMC. “But Kaiser administrators refuse to put that enormous financial success back into
improving patient care. In fact,
Kaiser refuses even to guarantee
a minimum floor for staffing to
keep patients safe and to protect
their access to timely care. And
now, Kaiser wants to cut workers’ benefits too, even though
Kaiser executives have eight
pension plans each! It’s outrageous.”
The strike notice issued covers every NUHW member at
Kaiser Permanente. NUHW-represented workers include RNs,
Psychologists, Social Workers,
Optical Workers, Health Educators, Dietitians, Speech Pathologists and Audiologists.

Sciences. “Support from the Zapletal Charitable
Trust comes at a
time when veterans need support
for
education
more than ever
before,” he said.
Highest priority for the scholarships will be given to students
who have financial need and are
academically deserving. Students whose spouse or parent
have been wounded in the line
of service, or who have lost a
parent or spouse connected to
military service after their service was complete in the United
States Marine Corps or in any
branch of the United States
armed forces are also eligible.
In addition, students who are
active military or veterans of the
armed forces, as well as those
whose parents are veterans or
retired from military service,
will be considered. Juniors or
seniors enrolled in CSUSB’s

hand. He takes the place of reliever John Wiedenbauer who
has been transferred to Rookie
Orem.
Since moving to the starting rotation Johnny Hellweg
has seen his stock sky-rocket.
The right-hander, who features
a 100-mph fastball, is 3-1 with
a 2.32 ERA and 63 strikeouts
in 54.1 innings over 12 starts
in 2011. Inland Empire is 9-3
in games started by the 6’9”

John Wiedenbauer was a
key piece of the
66ers bullpen
since arriving
in the Inland
Empire in late
July. In 10 1/3
innings he allowed just two
earned
runs
and held opponents to a .139
batting average. He will join

How a Personal Watercraft Can Get You Into The Boating Lifestyle
(ARA) - Wondering how
you can take advantage of local waterways and be one of
the people out there enjoying
the boating lifestyle? One of
the easiest and most fun ways
to enjoy everything the water has to offer is by taking a
ride on a personal watercraft
(PWC). Personal watercraft
are no longer the loud and solitary vessels of the past. The
PWCs of today are 75 percent
quieter, include safety fea-
tures, are more maneuverable,
and designed to accommodate
up to three passengers.
These more advanced models make PWC well suited for
a number of different activities
aside from just zipping around
the water. And, with threeseaters being the most popular
model, more and more families are discovering fun on the
water on PWCs.
“Recent developments have
made personal watercraft saf-
er and easier to use and enjoy,”
says David Dickerson, executive director of the Personal
Watercraft Industry Association. “No matter where you
live, you’ll find that getting
on a PWC is more accessible
than ever. Whether you are
purchasing or renting, a PWC
is an ideal way to explore local waterways and spend a
day outdoors with family and
friends.”
Here are a few ways to en-
joy a PWC that you may not
have considered:
* Be a nautical explorer.
Since they can be quieter and
smaller than most boats, exploring small areas like inlets
or bays are more manageable
on a PWC. You might find it is
easier to watch wildlife or find
hidden areas since they can
navigate through more shallow waters.
* Go fishing. A growing
number of fishing enthusiasts
are enlisting the help of their
PWC to make their next big
catch. PWCs can not only be
outfitted with fish finders, rigs
and coolers, but they can also
get fishermen out on the water and to their favorite spot
quicker and easier than a larger boat.
* Teach the kids to water
ski. Trying to water ski for
the first time can be intimidat-
ing, especially for kids who
might find the wake of a boat
too much for their first time.
Teaching a child to water ski
using a PWC may make the
experience more effortless
since the wake is smaller, parents are closer to the skier, and
the ride is smoother.
* Enjoy your own private
hideaway. Experience the feeling of having your own island
by heading out on your PWC
to a remote lake area or riverside campground. Most PWCs
have storage to stow away
lunch and a blanket. This type
of waterfront adventure offers
an exclusive way to dine and
relax, accessible only by water.
Visit www.boatshows.com
to find a boat show in your
area this fall and winter where
you can check out the latest
personal watercraft.

Lake Bees Wednesday night.
As the right hander returns,
the 66ers wish pitcher Ryan
Chaffee and infielder Jon
Karcich the best of luck as
they have been promoted to
AAA Salt Lake.
Pena was leading the
California League with 180
strikeouts when he was promoted to pitch for the Salt
Lake Bees against Rockies
affiliate, Colorado Springs.
He went four innings allowing three runs (only one of
which was earned) on seven
hits and four walks in the
outing.
Ryan Chaffee returns to
Salt Lake for his second stint
this season in AAA. Chaffee
was 2-10 with a 7.26 ERA for
Inland Empire but was 1-0
in two appearances for the
Bees. Jon Karcich is making
his first ever trip to the Pacif-
ic Coast League. He hit .208
with two home runs and 21
RBI for Inland Empire, but is
coming off his best month of
the season. Karcich hit .260
with a home run and eight
RBI for the 66ers in August.
The Inland Empire 66ers
have a four game homestand
to wrap the 2011 regular season. The series starts Friday
at Arrowhead Credit Union

What you Had to Say About 9/11...
“Like most firefighters, I can distinctly remember the moment that I
first heard the news regarding the World Trade Center attacks. I was
on duty at fire station 214 in the City of Colton preparing to go off
duty after a busy shift. All personnel were called to the kitchen by
the Battalion Chief and the urgent tone of his call was distinct. As we
assembled it quickly become clear by the live news feed that a critical incident was developing. It was initially unclear as to how this
had happened. Was it accident or intentional? But as we collectively
watched the second tower come under attack and the news of additional hijackings evolve, that question was answered. In addition to
feeling angry about the unthinkable, fate of both innocent civilians
and sworn public safety personnel, I recall my realization and anger
that our very way of life as Americans was under attack. It became
clear that these events would change our world forever.”
-Jeff Bender, Loma Linda Fire Chief
“Having lived in New Jersey just 30 miles from the World Trade Center, it was very painful to see, on TV, these buildings being destroyed.
I had visited these buildings, and been to the top to see the view. But
when these buildings went down, I felt a fear that if enemies of the
USA could do this, truly not any of us could continue life as we had
lived it before. This is an even greater tragedy!”
-Dan Neergaard, Loma Linda resident
“On September 11, 2001 I was getting ready for work when my older
daughter called to tell us to turn on the television as there was news
about the World Trade Center having been hit by two airplanes. I immediately called family members in Allentown, PA as they are only
one hour away from NYC and I was afraid for them. They were also
the first ones I called when the news came that Osama Bin Laden had
been killed by United States troops. Although the entire country had
been affected by the attack, the east coast took the brunt of the brutality and I wanted them to know we were with them all the way.”
-Edith Nelsen, Grand Terrace resident
“When I awoke on Sep. 11th it was just another day until I turned on
the TV for the morning news. It was 5:45 or 6:00 AM. when they were
just reporting that a plane had struck the first building, and then right
before our eyes the second plane hit the other building, I just could
not believe what I was seeing, I told my wife then I thought it was a
terrorist attack, I also thought maybe it was not real, but then reality
struck and all I could think about was the people on the planes, and
the ones in the buildings. I joined as our nation came together on that
day, and in the months to follow, and I still lift up our flag in pride, as
‘ONE NATION UNDER GOD’.”
-Jim Danielson, Grand Terrace businessman
“On the morning of September 11th 2001, I was only six years old,
however I can still remember that day. I was getting ready for school.
My mom was combing my hair and suddenly she stopped and hollered at my dad to come and look at the news when the plane hit the
tower. I remember their faces suddenly turned somber and sad, it was
a day I could never forget.”
-Lauren Salazar, Colton High School Student and
Colton resident
“I had just returned home from work when I turned on CNN news.
The first plane had just crashed into one of the twin towers. The reporter was speculating this was a private plane. My first thoughts
were, heat rises and there is nowhere to go, no escape. When the
second plane crashed. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and my
gasps quickly turned into fear. I suspected we were being attacked.
Inevitably, we were going to war. History was in the making.....all the
commotion had awakened my wife and kids. What I remember most
was my 7 year old son asking me, “ How are all those people going
to get out?” My eyes welled up and the tears rolled down. I tried to
say some comforting words to him and explain help was on the way,
when the buildings collapsed from the intensive heat and fire. I was
shocked. I felt helpless. All I could do was pray for the innocent victims and their families. Today, I reflect on the heroic courage of the
first responders. We must be vigilent. We need to aware of our surroundings and report suspicious activities.”
-Randall Ceniceros, CJUSD Board of Education
“I remember having just sung “God Bless America” on the steps of
the Capitol with my colleagues on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001.
Afterwards, I saw the smoking billowing from the Pentagon, which
had been hit by a hijacked plane. I remember the fear, chaos and
uncertainty of the situation. It was frightening and there was a lot of
shock.”
-Representative Joe Baca, Congressman for the 43rd
District of California
“Just like many I was at work on this terrible day...I remember walking into the front office of one of our elementary schools, and seeing
the face of the secretary. I asked what happen? She told me a plane
crashed into the twin towers in New York, and my daughter works
nearby there. I was “heart-felt” for my co-worker, when another coworker announced a second plane crashed into the twin towers..tears
came into my eyes as I thought of all the people in New York. My
co-worker’s daughter was unharmed, but the loss of so many people
will always be in my heart.”
-Paul Rasso, Colton Resident
“I had been up all night the night
before with a sick baby. I turned
the TV when I woke up, just
in time to see the second plane
crash into the second tower! It
was like I was having a nightmare. It seemed too impossible
to be real, yet, the tragedy just
kept getting worse! I woke up to
a huge nightmare that day.”
-Delane Smith, Redlands resident
“It was 6:00 a.m. in Long Beach,
where I arrived to assist a friend
with her father’s memorial service. Her young son came to us
and said, “mommy the plane flew
into the building.” We thought
he was probably watching cartoons, only to realize the horror a
few moments later after the radio
we were listening to repeated, “
the plane flew into the building
”. We quickly joined her son and
watched in shock as the buildings collapsed.”
-Sheila “Umbaji” Futch, Veteran of the Air Force and Senior
District Representative for Assembly Member Wilmer Amina
Carter, 62nd Assembly District
“9/11 is a day I want to forget,
but, it will be a day to remember for a lifetime, many lost their
lives in just a fraction of time.”

“The images on the television, of the first tower on fire, were difficult
to process as nobody really knew what had happened. Then the second plane hit and everything changed. For me and most Americans,
the immediate response was prayer for others and clinging close to
family.”
-Anonymous
“9/11 took me by surprise, but it took us all by surprise, didn’t it?...
I first caught wind of it on a sports talk station I was listening to as I
drove my daughter to school. It seemed so surreal I couldn’t believe
what I was hearing. As soon as I got home I told my wife...we turned
on the TV and watched together in horror as we saw first one and then
a second tower collapse. Who could do such a terrible thing; why?”
-Patrick Bower, Riverside resident
“I was at home when the horrors of 9-11 happened. On television a
cameraman caught a still photo of a poor victim falling from one of
the burning towers.
Ten years later, on my computer, I saw that same photo - something I
will never forget as long as I live. I still find all of it hard to believe,
even after ten years.”
-Hugh J. Grant, Grand Terrace resident
“I had east coast feed on my TV,
I turned it on randomly to watch
channel 7, I saw the plane hit
live. My brother-in-law worked
in L.A. for Marsh & McLlean
and travels frequently. I panicked
and hoped that he was ok. I will
never forget that day.”
-Cindee Smith, Lytle Creek resident
“Since I grew up in New York,
the 911 attacks felt as if my home
had been attacked (it was). I
owned a Postal Annex+ store at
the time, and our primary business was shipping. On 911, all
air shipping stopped and the
stop continued for the rest of the
week. Normally people were impatient to get their items shipped
from one destination to another,
but not that week. Our customers understood the magnitude of
the situation, and were patient
and understanding. It saddens
me to say that our country will
never be the same.”
-Kathleen Murray, Grand Terrace resident
9/11 Account from a Ret. Naval Officer, now Colton High School Teacher
My name is David J. Brunkhorst, USN (ret) and I was a Naval Officer and Aviator onboard
the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63),
home based in YOKOSUKA
Japan when the attacks of 9/11
took place. It was around 0400
and I was in my onbase house
with my family, sleeping, when
the telephone rang. I answered
it and on the other end was one
of the ship’s Duty Officers.
All he said was, “The bastards
bombed the Pentagon!! There
is an all-hands recall.” As I got
dressed, I turned on the Armed
Forces Network and watched
in disbelief the videos of the
planes crashing into the World
Trade Center towers.
I literally ran the two miles to
the ship to find it bustling with
activity. Most notable was the
revised tone of “business.” The
salutes were sharper, very few
words could be heard, and EVERY Sailor had a look on his/
her face that was unmistakably
AMERICAN!! There was not
the usual morning chit-chat,
nor complaints of having to
perform menial tasks. We were
to get underway in just TWO
DAYS for the middle east, so
the underway preparations that
generally take months would
have to be completed by working “around the clock.”
I doubt I have ever been as
proud to be an American as I
was that morning. To see the
patriotism, especially on the
young faces, was worth every
sacrifice I had made during
my 26 years serving this country. I had honestly feared that
the patriotism that had carried
us through so many wars and
conflicts had been lost and that
young folks these days, serve
only for “what’s in it for them.”
To my surprise and delight, I
was mistaken.
We did indeed get underway
within the two days, but this
was going to be a strange at-sea
period as we were NOT going
to be onloading any fixed-wing
aircraft....only rotary winged
helicopters. I don’t believe a
U.S. carrier had EVER gotten
underway minus the fixed wing
squadrons so this indicated
that our time off the coast of
the middle east was going to
be an interesting one. I cannot
get into details about what took
place during our two months
there but I must point out one
disturbing detail: I was in the
tower when the first wave of
rotary wing aircraft took off for
the first strike and by the time I
made my way to the wardroom
to eat, a well-known liberal
television station was already
announcing the takeoff. Makes
one wonder who’s side some of
these media organizations are
on.
Our Navy and Country came
together after 9/11 and it made
us all proud to be in uniform.
Unfortunately, the moral sup-
port coming from many Americans faded as the time passed
and that is sad. To those of you
observing 9/11 however, and
to those of you who still stop
to shake the hand of a Service
Member......THANK YOU!! It
was a pleasure to have served.
I am now the Senior Naval Science Instructor of the Colton
High School NJROTC(Naval
Junior Regional Officer Training Corps) Unit and I have the
privilege of working with this
country’s FINEST young people. Your support is appreciated.

The excitement never lets

Eight guests who have never

Amy Grant Comes to the Inland Empire
By: Jules E. Beuck
Entertainment Writer
Amy Grant has been performing since high school.
She has been called the
Queen of Christian Pop and
has had secular hits as well.
She continues to record and
perform live shows, one of
which she brought to the
California Theater in San
Bernardino on September
9th.
As the band was setting
up, the audience started
clapping. Grant commented
that they had not even done
anything yet. She opened
the show with a cover of
Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi.” She then told the
crowd, “I’m still thrilled and
surprised when people decide to show up!”
She did a mixture of her
Christian and secular songs.
Her encore was a cover of
Jackie Deshannon’s “Put A
Little Love In Your
Heart.” Other songs
she performed included: “I’m The
Lucky One,” “Saved
By Love,” “Welcome
To My World,” “Sing
Your Praise To The
Lord,” and “House
Of Love” to name a
few. After “My Father’s Eyes” she told
the crowd, “All of
you who clapped are
over fifty.”
Grant has an easy
way on the stage. She
seems to treat the
show as a conversation with the audience as she explains
some of the songs
or talks about what
is going on with her
and the band. Grant
liked to joke with
the crowd and genuinely appeared to be

enjoying herself on
stage.
At one point while
tuning her guitar she
hit a twangy chord
and remarked, “Can
you tell I sleep with a
country singer?”
She was backed by
a three piece band,
keyboard,
acoustic
guitar or mandolin
and percussion. The
percussionist
Greg
Morrow (formerly of
Degarmo and Key)
had an interesting set
up. Instead of a trap
set he had a bass drum
and standing tom tom
while beating on a
tom in his hand.
The only electronic instrument was the
keyboards. After her
keyboardist
played
a nice solo she remarked, “So that nap
really helped!”
The audience for the most
part was quiet and respectful. That does not mean they
were not enjoying themselves
as heads were seen bobbing
in time to the music. Some
songs received stronger response than others , from
the audience, but after her
last song she received an enthusiastic standing ovation.
Upcoming shows at the
California Theater include:
(the first three will be in
conjunction with the Route
66 Rendevous), Chuck Berry the 16th, Chubby Checker
the 17th, Barenaked Ladies
the 18th, then in October:

Put your left foot in,
Your left foot out,
Your left foot in,
And shake it all about.
You do the hokey pokey

O proud left foot, that ventures quick within

Anon, once more the gesture, then begin:

Commence thou then the fervid Hokey-Poke.
A mad gyration, hips in wanton swirl.

Prescription Help is Available for Uninsured Americans
(ARA) - Many of us know
someone - a co-worker, relative or neighbor - who has
been affected by the recession. Unfortunately, lost jobs
haven’t been the only casualty during these tough
economic times. In
fact, new results from
The Commonwealth
Fund’s Biennial Health
Insurance Survey reveal that 9 million
Americans lost their
health insurance during the past two years
on account of losing
their jobs. According
to the survey, this data
suggests that nearly
52 million American
adults were uninsured
at some point during
2010.
Without the ability to pay for needed
medical care, uninsured individuals are less likely to
receive preventive care, are
more likely to be hospitalized
for chronic conditions that
could have been prevented,
and are more likely to die
in the hospital than insured
Americans. Information from
the Biennial Health Insurance
Survey highlights this assertion, indicating that 75 million adults skipped doctors’
visits, prescriptions, specialist
er Helpful Answers, Pfizer’s
family of patient assistance
programs, helps eligible uninsured and underinsured
Americans get access to Pfizer medicines for free or at a
care and recommended tests
or treatments in 2010 because
of cost, up 60 percent over the
past decade.
Fortunately, there is relief for uninsured Americans
struggling to pay for their
prescription medicines. Pfiz-
savings. In the last five years
(2006-2010), Pfizer Helpful
Answers helped nearly 4.5
million uninsured and underinsured patients get access to
more than 44 million Pfizer
prescriptions, equaling more
than $5.6 billion.
Nearly two years ago, Pfizer expanded its family of patient assistance programs by
launching the MAINTAIN
program, which helps eligible
patients who have recently
lost their jobs continue receiving their
Pfizer medicines for
up to 12 months, or
until they become insured again, whichever comes first. Since
the program’s inception in 2009, MAINTAIN has proved to
be a valuable resource
for the recently unemployed and uninsured.
For example, when
Stuart Tathwell lost
his job in Nashville,
Tennessee, he looked
to MAINTAIN to help
him get access to his
Pfizer medicines.
“Prescription
medicines
can be a significant cost to
someone who is unemployed,”
said Tathwell, when Pfizer
asked about his experience
with the program. “Pfizer’s
MAINTAIN program has allowed me to continue taking
my Pfizer medicines at the
recommended dosage.”
To help meet the continued
need for such programs, Pfizer recently extended MAINTAIN to accept applications
through December 31, 2011.
“We launched the MAINTAIN program in an effort to
meet the changing needs of
Americans without health insurance coverage,” explained
Gary Pelletier, Director and
Team Leader of Pfizer Helpful Answers. “This new data
from The Commonwealth
Fund affirms that programs
like MAINTAIN are still
highly important to uninsured Americans. Now that
MAINTAIN is accepting applications through the end of
2011, we have the opportunity to help even more eligible
uninsured and unemployed
patients in need access their
Pfizer medicines.”

MAINTAIN program and
other Pfizer Helpful Answers
programs, or to check your
eligibility status, call 1-866706-2400 or visit www.PfizerHelpfulAnswers.com.
A Few of the Top Family Beaches Across America
(ARA) - The economy may
be tottering like a newborn
calf, but that won’t stop families from heading to the beach
this summer.
Eighty-one percent of travelers still plan to go somewhere
for a summer vacation, according to a survey by consumer
travel website Orbitz. And
while the notion of the “staycation” is so 2009, rising gas
prices will likely keep travelers close to home, as six in 10
families say it was important to
go on vacation this year despite
increased fuel costs, according
to a recent USAToday/Gallup
poll.
But where is there to go?
Sure, big waves, romantic sunsets, and turquoise waters are
great.
But
carrying a
crying toddler across
miles
of
burning sand
or
having
your
family picnic ruined by some
boozing 20somethi ngs
can
really
ruin a beach vacation. These
five beach towns offer a great
balance of family friendliness
(think: extracurricular activities, nearby hotels, parking)
and surf and sand.
Waikiki, Hawaii
From surfing to visiting
the zoo, from restaurants to
performances. There is
also the iconic Diamond
Head Crater,
the 500-acre
Kapiolani
Park, a zoo
and an aquarium for when
you get too
much sun.

for everyone in your family.
Found in Honolulu, Waikiki
used to be a retreat for Hawaiian royalty. Today, the beachfront is lined with hotels and
resorts and hosts many events
throughout the year, including

Beach, S.C.
Myrtle Beach has camping,
resorts, outlet malls, go-cart
parks, waterslides, thousands
of restaurants, plenty of shows
and 60 miles of wide, soft sandy beaches. Plus, it boasts some
of the best (and, with more than
250, most) golf courses in the
south, some created by Arnold
Palmer, Jack Nicklaus or Greg
Norman. With the average high
hovering in the high 80s and a
wide variety of activities for all
ages, it is one of the top family beach destinations in the
United States.
Clearwater, Fla.
Considered one of America’s
best beaches, Clearwater will
offer your family a fun, relaxing vacation. The clear, warm
waters are shallow and the lifeguards on duty are attentive.
The beaches include a pier and
accessible restrooms. The kids
will enjoy building sandcastles
while the parents keep an eye
out from underneath their umbrella. Older kids can rent jet
skis if they get restless.
