Kayaking Accident Claims Two of BC's Greatest
Shock, disbelief, and extreme sadness took the outdoor sports and adventure community hostage as news set in
about the tragic kayaking accident in Howe Sound on Sunday October 7, 2007 that claimed the lives of two well
known and respected adventure athletes, Denis Fontaine, 40, and Richard Juryn, 50.
Both Fo n taine, from Deep Cove, and Juryn, from North Vancouver, we re avid sportsmen who lived their lives with
dedication and love for sports and the outdoors. They touched many lives in this community. Fontaine, and his partner, Cheryl Beatty- who survived the accident - are well-known adventure racers and kayakers who regularly participated in Sea 2 Summit Adventure Races, Mind Over Mountain Adventure Races, Round Bowen Races, trail running races, Yeti snowshoeing events, and many more. Juryn, who ran a company called Shore Events, was extremely
connected in the mountain biking community and was a central figure in the push for more cross-country mountain
bike trails and bringing them up to world-class level.
In dedication to these men who touched so many lives, Get Out There Magazine would like to print some thoughts
and memories of those whose lives they touched. If you have some memories or experiences you would like to
share, please email [email protected].
It's Wet, It's Cold, It's Snowing!
It's Time to Start Running!
Winter is moving in and the skis and boards are coming out. But don't pack those runners away for long. January is
the month to start training for all those spring events such as the Vancouver Sun Run (April 20, 2008) and the
Vancouver International Marathon (May 4, 2008).
Need help getting motivated on those cold, snowy days? Why not join a running clinic? Below are a couple (of many)
companies offering winter running clinics. Check in with your lo cal running shoe store for details on their clinics.
Note: For early season races, check out the Fraser Valley Trail Run Series, four trail runs running January 1 until
the first week of March. www.peninsularunners.com/events/trailseries

Beware of What you Wear!
women for only $19.95 at select Valhalla Pure Outfitte rs, and Mountain Equipment Coop offers a good range of organic co t ton outdoor clothing including organic co t ton
pants, which they make themselves in Canada, for $62 CAD.
So next time you go shopping for new athletic gear, look for the organic co t ton label.
Because applying your environmentally and health conscious mantra to what goes
onto your body has never been easier, more fashionable or more affordable.
For more information on Organic Cotton visit www.sustainablecotton.org
Note: In addition to organic cotton, consumers can choose other organic fabrics
including colour-grown cotton, hemp, cruelty-free silk and recycled-plastic fleece.
You are an environmentally and health conscious consumer. So you think.
You wake up in the morning; grab a cup of organic coffee and a breakfast of organic
cereal, milk and fruit, before jumping into your athletic wear and heading off to your
morning yoga class. You are conscious about what you are putting into your body; but
are you aware of what you are putting onto your body?
According to the Organic Trade Association (OTA), approximately 25 percent of the
world's insecticides and more than 10 percent of the pesticides (including herbicides,
insecticides and defoliants) are used to grow conventional cotton. Seven of the top 15
pesticides used on U.S. cotton crops are listed by the EPA as potential or known
human carcinogens, and these chemicals have the potential to infiltrate the water, soil
and our bodies.
A sensible solution? Organic co t ton clothing. And it seems this solution is
ca tching on.
Production of organic cotton has increased dramatically over the past few years
resulting in more organic clothing choices for the consumer. Statistics from the OTA
s h ow a whopping 76 percent increase in the production of organic cotton from 2005 to
2006, while sales of organic women's clothing during that period grew by 33.6 percent
and organic men's clothing by 21 percent.
Locally, options for organic clothing are now readily available in manufacturing
brands, major outdoors retailers, and online from specialty shops. Among numerous
other choices, you can purchase Bamboo and organic co t ton t-shirts for both men and
A Better Way to Hit the Slopes?
So you and your buddy are heading to the hills for a great day of skiing and boarding.
After cramming your skis, boots, boards, and other equipment into your already
packed vehicle, you fill up at the gas station, and start on the slippery uphill journey to
the mountain. It's snowing. A good thing for your day on the hill but not so good for the
drive. You slip and slide in white-out conditions until you get to the resort parking lot,
only to find you have to park and walk 25 minutes with all your gear to get to the lifts.
There is another option. Take the bus. Let the driver deal with black ice on the road,
and he/she will drop you and your gear where you want to be - right at the lifts! Added
bonus - you get to relax, perhaps even meet some like-minded new people, and hey,
fewer cars on the road are better for the environment.
Most ski resorts offer some sort of bus transportation direct to the hill. Below is a
snapshot of bus options for Vancouver's local mountains and Whistler. Check out the
websites of BC and Alberta's other resorts for times and more information. There are
also companies such as Sigges and Moose Travel Network offering day and multi day
trips and ski packages that include transportation and lift passes.
It just makes sense. Let someone else do the driving. Take the bus.

BIO
In Burke
We Trust
Former “flatlands” mogul skier
now one of the best freeskiers
in the world
By Ron Johnson
This past year has been a career-defining one for skier Sarah Burke.
Although not a household name, yet,
prior to this season Burke, 26, was
already considered one of the finest
skiers on the planet. Now, after winning a gold medal in the Winter X
Games competition (considered the
Olympics equivalent for action sports
such as freeskiing and snow b o a rding),
and an ESPY award as the year's top
action film star, Burke has solidified
her claim on the title. Not bad for a girl
who sta r ted out skiing the flatlands of southern Ontario.
Growing up in Midland, and skiing at Horseshoe Resort, Burke
quickly established herself as a mogul skier, joining the
O n tario ski team before making the jump to the more cre a t i ve
and then-obscure freeskiing arena. One problem: there were
no pipe or air competitions for women. Burke had no problem
entering men's competitions, and thanks in part to her efforts,
competitions for women were soon added. Now Burke is a professional "freeskier," living and working in Whistler, when she's
not tra veling the world for competitions or shooting parts for
films, including her latest work in Roxy's "Labour of Love." We
caught up with Burke to ask her about her career year, and
how she got from the flatlands of Midland to the pinnacle of the
ski world.
First of all congratulations. It's been quite a year for you. To what do
you attribute the phenomenal success you've had this year?
It was a great year, thanks. I am not too sure what I attribute it to.
Being smart with what jumps I hit and don't hit keeps me a little bit
healthier than in ye a rs past. Being ambitious, working out and being strong,
motivation, skiing and working with the right people, making sure to always
be having fun and being happy, practice...
And yo u ' re a fellow flatlander, from the big city of Midland. They should
name a trail or pipe or something after you at Horseshoe, don't ya' think?
I don't think they really know what I am up to these days but for sure a
trail would be nice, a pipe, even better!

In Burke
We Trust
You've been after the X-Games gold for a while now, how did it feel to
nail your last run and take it home?
One of the best feelings for sure. It was a dream come true. I had been
competing and forerunning at the X Games for so long, winning it was a huge
goal of mine. I could not have been happier with the outcome.
What did you do for that last run, I'm guessing you still remember?
Yes, I still remember! I dropped in with a critical grab to a safety grab
to a 5 mute to mute to 900 to ally oop 5.
What is your next goal, now that you're an X-Games gold medalist,
and ESPY winner?
I still have so many goals. I can't wait for next year's X Games. Hopefully
they will have slope style for ladies skiing. I want to add more tricks to the
bag and become a better big mountain skier. My list could go on and on.
And a second ESPY would be nice . . . g i ve mine a buddy on the shelf!
You grew up in Midland, learning to ski at the local hills, how did you
get from there to here?
Practice makes perfect. I would just ski as much as I could. I went from a
kid going after school to the Ontario Mogul Team to this, Pro Freeskier.
It's so true when they say "never give up", I guess.
Have you been back since you've become the Sarah Burke that some
have called the best female skier on the planet? I'm sure you'd turn a
few heads in the pipe.
Photo courtesty of Roxy/Jorgenson
What would you say to the young skiers in the park at Horseshoe and
other smaller hills that want to follow in your footsteps?
Follow your dreams and believe in yourself! Just because you ski at a small
East Coast mountain doesn't mean you don't rip. Get out there and do
contests, get on a team and practice, practice, practice. Most importantly,
have FUN!
Back then, you were one of only a few women, and had to compete
against the guys. What was that like?
It was a blast most of time. The guys we re supportive and psyched to have a
chick up there with them. Other times it was frustrating of course. Never
having any other girls or a field to compete in and always having to argue
and fight to get a spot was a bit hard. That struggle makes me appreciate how
far our sport has come!
With competitions and ski trips for films, how much skiing
do you do in a year?
A whole lot....let's just leave it at that!
Haha! I do go back for Christmas. I haven't been skiing at Horseshoe much but
more at Blue and Louis. My friend Denise Jaworski and I put on a free camp for
girls called Progression Ski Camp once a year around Christmas time.
You started competing at moguls, what caused the switch
to free skiing?
And you now reside in Whistler, how long have you been there?
I have been there for about 3 years now. I love it. It's a great spot all
year round from biking and skiing to climbing and hiking. Constant fun!
And what do you like to do when you're not skiing?
I always loved being in the air. The jumps in moguls we re my favo u r i te part.
So when big air contests became popular and started popping up at all the
bump events, I got right into it. Free skiing just seemed to be a better fit
for me and I switched to competing the next season.
And how would you describe free skiing, exactly?
Park, Pipe, and Big Mountain all kind of fall into the ca tegory. Just
skiing without all the rules. In free skiing, you set your own style and
form of expression on the mountain and that's what makes you unique
and a good competitor. Whereas in racing and moguls there is more
of a set technique.
I love biking and surfing. Long boarding, painting, watching movies, cooking
and trying to sew clothes. And I have a new house...so I like decorating
and just being in it!
Does life get any better than this, gold medalist, ESPY winner,
living and skiing in Whistler, traveling around the world?
I am pretty excited and appreciate what I have going on and accomplished.
I couldn't be happier or more thankful. It's the perfect life for me!
Is there a place on your life list you haven't been able to ski yet?
Oh yeah...there are a ton. There are places I don't even know of that I
want to ski, I'm sure! I got a lot of life left to shred the world!
