Great Inaugural Bois d`Arc Spring Car Show
BLKRT U.S. POSTAGE PAID PERMIT NO. 102 Commerce, Texas 75428 May 2015 A PUBLICATION OF THE COMMERCE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Great Inaugur al Bois d’Arc Spring Car Show By Sheryl Millar After a week of stormy weather, the inaugural Bois d’Arc Spring Car Show kicked off on Saturday, April 25 with arguably the most beautiful day so far this spring! With almost 30 entries ranging from pre-war cars to classic trucks, Porsches and an Alfa Romeo, to Mustangs, motorcycles, and everything in between, there was something for everyone to enjoy. Dash plaques and goody bags were provided to entrants when they registered, along with a $2 off coupon for breakfast or lunch that McKay’s Country Kitchen provided. DJ Dave and Bro. Gary Mobile DJ Service provided music and entertainment throughout the day. Car show participants and local citizens alike enjoyed breakfast and lunch on the square—at McKay’s Country Kitchen and from Dos Gringos Locos— while listening to great music. Kona Ice was there providing delicious shaved ice, and we had several vendors as well ranging from fresh-baked bread and other goodies to collector knives. Participant ping-pong ball judging was used again this year. Entrants drew six labeled ping-pong balls at registration, and then voted for cars in those six categories. All entrants vote for Best In Show Car and Best In Show Truck. Class Winners were presented in each category. There were so many beautiful vehicles that ties occurred in many categories, so those received Class Awards. This year, the 50/50 pot winner was Loyd Brigance of Greenville. David Portell, representing “Big Block Sponsor” Commerce Chevrolet Buick, presented the Best in Show Car trophy to Ricky & Diane Bunch of Cumby for their beautiful turquoise and white 1957 Chevy. David presented the Best in Show Truck trophy to Gaines Babb of Paris for his exceptional 1936 GMC Pickup. Les Shaw from Emory received a $50 prize for having driven the most miles. Door prizes and goody bag items were provided by many local businesses, including Pride Coffee & Italian Café, Brookshire’s, O’Reilly Auto Parts, Pizza Hut, Lone Star Eatery, A&M-Commerce President’s Office, Hunt Regional Healthcare, A&MCommerce Athletics, Domino’s Pizza, Chicken Express, Guaranty Bank & Trust, Affordable Furniture, Violet Spell with Avon, and many others. A tremendous thank you goes out to all our door prize and goody bag item providers! Thank you to every citizen, patron, volunteer, sponsor and chamber member who has made April a fun month! A quick update on Chamber business: • The By-Laws taskforce is nearly complete with their recommendations for revisions. The suggested edits will be reviewed by the entire board and scheduled for a vote at our May meeting. • Our Scope of Work committee, headed up by Velvete Womack of Fire and Ice, made great progress in our April meeting, and are working on Phase II within the development of the scope of work. As you can tell by the pictures there was a great crowd of supporters present and ready to bid on donated items for the silent auction. There was over 431 tickets sold as well as 705 raffle tickets all prepared to buy some of the 300 auction items. The items for auction ranged from pies, cakes, plants, pretty items for the home and garden to Fossil hunts on the local river beds to a children’s art party for 10, a 2 man bird hunt at 10/2/4 Ranch as well as Lone Star Conference Championship Football. The baked goods were overflowing at the home made store with all sorts of sweets and canned items for sale. There was literally something for sale for everyone and all spectrums of taste and needs. The fine art gallery had original and print art from local artist’s and national wildlife organizations. Children’s items were very prevalent and fitting because of the name of the event. The committee and staff of the Children’s Museum out did their efforts from last year with great organization and wonderful displays of merchandise. There was a lot of hard work that went into this event and the great attendance to it is a great testament to these efforts. There were politicians, judges, lawyers, doctors, educators, farmers, home makers, firefighters, policemen, city council members, students, athletes, bankers and all there to support Commerce and the Children’s Museum. The social event of the year went off without a hitch. The committee and staff want to thank the University as well as Sodexo food service for their hospitality. They also want to thank all the donors and sponsors for their continued support. Happy Memorial Day Monday, May 25 May 2015 May 2015 Commerce City Council Approves Funding for Improvements to Farmers Market During the City Council meeting, last Tuesday night, the proposed AmpTheatre and Pavilion project was approved to start construction. The Downtown Improvement Committee presented this planned project and as a group was formed by the City Council to bring ideas forward to help improve and revitalize the downtown Commerce area. The Committee had been reviewing ideas and proposals for a few months when the idea came up to revitalize the Farmers Market area. Since there are multiple times a year that there is live music on the square and a real need to have a permanent structure to display these events, this seemed like a perfect place to begin the project. The pavilion will be on a raised platform and surrounded by grass berms to accommodate seating for concerts or speeches or any kind of outdoor event. There are 5 phases to this project that include a fence around the back-drop of the amp-theatre, a new Farmers Market Pavilion, walking track, picnic tables and covers scattered throughout the area as well as access to enjoy the stage area from any of the Farmers Market area. The Committee feels this will not only enhance the downtown area of Commerce but it will have the ability to bring more local as well as out of town visitors to the area. This will also open the downtown square area up for other type of activities and more vendor and food court spacing. Since this is a multi use facility it will add to the appearance and the appeal of downtown. By beginning this project in phases it will ease the cost by spreading the investment over a longer time frame, while adding value to a property that is not being utilized at the present time. This will be a safe gathering place for family and community events that will invite participation. The goal of the committee is to research prospective ideas for growth and enhancement of the downtown Commerce area and to bring those ideas before the City Council for review and or action on them. There were over 100 volunteers that showed up including Texas A&M football players, sorority members, civic leaders, University staff and Leadership, service clubs, concerned citizens, Sheriff department trustees, church groups all picking up and making Commerce a better place to live and work. This event was the brain child of Dr. Mary Hendricks Texas A&M-Commerce and Paul Voss of the Chamber of Commerce to revitalize the old Big Event in Commerce. The planning started the ball rolling and pretty soon there were volunteers and service organizations wanting to get their name on the list to help. We started around 8am Saturday morning and most were finished with their designated routes by noon. There were 8 routes throughout the city to perform curb side pick-up of trash, refuse, brush and limbs on the curb. The only stipulation was there would be no pick-up of batteries, tires, electronics, paint or chemicals. We had pick-up trucks and trailers, trucks with goose neck trailers and City dump trucks followed throughout the city by a fleet of cars and trucks filled with eager citizens ready to load the equipment up and then go load it into the dumpsters waiting at the Farmers Market. The City of Commerce also provided a tractor with a back hoe attached to help the unloading and loading process. We want to thank the University, City, Commerce Police and Fire Department, Guaranty Bank and Trust, Sheriff’s department trustees, Sweetie’s Donuts, Pride Coffee, McKay’s Restaurant, Dos Gringos Locos, Fix and Feed, Brookshire’s, Lion’s club, Iron Mountain paper shredder, Cross Trails Cowboy Church, City Sanitation, Darrell and his crew from the City Works Department. It has been decided to try to do this event at least twice a year and we will be coming out with notice for a fall chapter of this big event, probably in November. I want to personally thank all who participated this year with both their time and sponsorships, I think it was a huge success and a great community building experience.
