Nash Community College’s mission is to provide an affordable educational environment which prepares students for
college transfer and rewarding careers. Through high quality
instruction, technology, workforce development, and community partnerships, Nash Community College provides
lifelong learning opportunities to individuals, communities
and organizations.
Nash Community College Annual Report
Message from the President
Dear Friends,
Each year, Nash Community College
serves over 12,000 students, preparing
them for a variety of professions to meet
the needs of our community. Over 80
programs are offered with enrollment
services available to assist the first-time or
continuing student. Our graduates go on
to excel in careers as nurses, machinists,
firefighters, welders, paramedics, electricians, and computer information professionals. Those preparing for transfer to a
four-year institution have realized success
and performed with distinction.
Every Nash Community College student has a unique story. One such story
is that of Alex Barnhill. After 20 years in
auto body repair and hardware sales, Alex
wanted a career that offered more stability and security. To be successful in this
transition, he needed to make the right
decision for long-term employment opportunities. Alex contends that he chose
Nash Community College because of its
reputation for relevant programs, dedicated faculty, and student satisfaction. Alex
decided to pursue his educational goals in
the machining program. Once enrolled,
he found state-of-the-art equipment and
a real world learning laboratory. He chose
a program certified by the National Institute for Metalworking Skills, one of four
in North Carolina so acknowledged.
Through our technical and college
transfer programs, Nash Community
College provides affordable educational
opportunities that prepare students, like
Alex, for rewarding employment. Because
of our commitment to high quality instruction, technology, workforce development, and community partnerships the
College continues to be an integral and
determined partner in shaping lives.
Please know that choosing education is
the right choice. Thank you for recognizing our efforts in providing lifelong
learning opportunities. The College stands
ready to assist you when contemplating
your decision. Come visit our campus
and see firsthand the commitment in the
educational resources, and people who
will make your goals a reality.
Kind regards,
William S. Carver, II, Ed.D.
President

Moving Forward
Nash expansions to benefit many areas
Nash Community College has announced plans for a new Continuing
Education building on the south side
of its campus. Last fall, Nash County
Commissioners unanimously agreed
to honor the College’s request. College
officials are working with OakleyCollier Architects in Rocky Mount to
complete the design for final approval
to begin the bid process.
“A new building will allow Nash
Community College to grow in many
of its Continuing Education programs,
especially in public safety areas as we
are looked upon as a local leader in
those areas of study,” President Bill
Carver said.
The building will be completed in
two phases: phase one including a
55,500 square foot construction and
phase two including more than 19,000
square feet. The building will include
amenities such as a pistol target range,
basic law enforcement training classrooms, a 29,100 square foot multipurpose room, lecture hall, classrooms
and administrative areas.

6 Nash Community College Annual Report
First year experience program focuses on student success
Nash Community College is currently in
the process of application for reaffirmation
of accreditation status through the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). This process
requires an internal review to consider the
College’s effectiveness in achieving its mission, compliance with accreditation standards,
and efforts toward enhancing the quality of
student learning and the quality of programs
and services offered. Development of a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) to demonstrate
engagement in ongoing improvement efforts is
a part of the reaffirmation process.
In August of 2008, a QEP Leadership Team
guided the process of selecting an issue the
College considered important to improving

Opportunity
Cultivating
Unparalleled
Success
student learning. After campus and community-wide input, a First Year Experience program
was selected. First year experience programs
are designed to help students transition into
the demands and expectations of college and
empower them to achieve greater success. The
College’s QEP was named FOCUS: Fostering
Opportunity, Cultivating Unparalleled Success.
At the core of the program is a new first year
seminar course targeted for all entering associate degree students.
In the fall semester 2010, the seminar
course was piloted in eight programs. The
seminar course will be incorporated into all
remaining degree programs over the next two
years. Ideally, students will enroll in the seminar course their first semester on campus. The
course addresses academic skills and campus
resources necessary for students’ success in
their college experience at Nash Community
College. Increasing engagement, awareness
and use of available resources, retention and
success of students is the ultimate goal of the
program.
Following a preliminary off-site review, an
on-site committee made up of ten peers from
similar colleges throughout the southeast
United States visited Nash Community College to evaluate overall integrity, faculty and
staff, institutional effectiveness, and the quality
of programs and services offered. The final determination of reaffirmation will be announced
in December 2011.

2+2+2 = SUCCESS!
Last fall, an innovative program
was launched to increase educational
opportunities and regional economic
growth. “The 2+2+2 initiative formed
by Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools,
Nash Community College and North
Carolina Wesleyan College (NCWC)
will enable area high school students
to continue their studies and obtain a
four-year degree locally at a lower cost,”

- Bill Carver
NCC President
President Bill Carver said.
With the program, students who
graduate from the Nash-Rocky Mount
Public Schools Early College with an
Associate Degree from Nash Community College are eligible to attend North
Carolina Wesleyan College at a cost
equal to that of a North Carolina state
funded university.
Enhanced admission, scholarships
and early access to the NCWC campus
are provided for graduates with high
GPAs. A letter of understanding guarantees admission to students who plan
to transfer to NCWC after graduating
from Nash Community College, and a
scholarship is possible for students who
meet all regular admission standards
with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5.
Nash Community College Associate
in Science student Joshua Foots of Rocky
Mount traveled to NASA’s Johnson Space
Center in Houston to participate in a
three day on-site learning experience.
He was selected as one of 89 community and junior college students
from across the nation to be part of the
National Community College Aerospace
Scholars program (NCAS). The NCAS
program is designed to promote interest
in Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics (STEM). Students completed four web-based assignments during
the school year, maintaining a 93 average
to qualify for the experience.
“The NCAS Program has been an
invaluable part of my learning experience and I highly recommend it to any
community college student interested in
any of the STEM areas. NCAS opens the
door to various opportunities at NASA
including internships. I am currently
applying for an internship at NASA that
will take place this summer,” Foots said.

students formed teams and established
fictional companies interested in Mars
exploration. The goal was to set up a mock
company to build and present a Mars
rover to NASA engineers and scientists. Foots and his peers met astronauts,
engineers, and scientists including famous
Mission Controller Gene Kranz — best
known for his role in directing the Mission Control team in effort to save the
Apollo 13 crew.
“I would like to thank Physics Instructor Ken Nash for his guidance in my
work. In general, I would like to thank all
my instructors. Without their support
and skill I would not have come as far as I
have,” he said.
Foots is the son of Robert and Ana
Foots of Rocky Mount. He graduated
from Rocky Mount Preparatory School in
2007 and will graduate from Nash Community College this spring. Upon graduation, he will transfer into the Physics and

President Emeritus Receives
ECU Alumni Distinguished
Service Award
The College’s second President,
President Emeritus Dr. J. Reid
Parrott, Jr., received the 2010 East
Carolina University Alumni Association Distinguished Service
Award in October.
Upon joining Nash Technical Institute in 1980, he brought a strong
background and wealth of experience in public and collegiate education to his presidency. Dr. Parrott’s
tenure of twenty years with the college ushered in a period of growth
in number of students served,
program offerings, and physical
facilities. His vision and leadership
enabled the college to assume a
prominent educational position in
the Nash-Rocky Mount area and
in the North Carolina Community
College System transitioning from a
technical institute to a comprehensive community college.
“Dr. J. Reid Parrott, Jr. has made
a lasting impact on North Carolina
and particularly the community
college system as a visionary leader,”
Nash Community College President
Bill Carver shared. “His dedication never waned and it is without
a doubt the community colleges
would not be what they are today
without his influence.”
Nash Community College gives back
In 2010, Nash Community College students,
faculty and staff gave back
to the community through a
number of projects.
Throughout a two-month
United Way campaign,
employees pledged to give
through payroll deduction and other fundraising
activities resulting in a total
contribution of more than
$12,000, a fifteen percent
increase from 2009.

Medical Assisting
receives accreditation
This year Nash Community College received five year accreditation
of its Medical Assisting program, a program that prepares multi-skilled
health care professionals to perform administrative, clinical and laboratory
procedures. The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education
Programs (CAAHEP) accreditation allows certification as an option for
graduates.
“Accreditation of the Medical Assisting diploma program confirms the
students receive high quality instruction at Nash Community College.

necessary for today’s
complex medical care,” NCC Health Sciences Chair Tammie Clark said.
CAAHEP is the largest program accreditor in the health sciences field
reviewing and accrediting over 2,000 educational programs in 20 health
science occupations. The Commission accredits Medical Assisting programs
upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review
Board (MAERB).
To obtain accreditation, the NCC Medical Assisting program underwent
a comprehensive review, including a written self-study report and on-site
review. Accredited Medical Assisting programs teach entry-level Medical
Assistant skills through a curriculum including: anatomy and physiology,
medical terminology, medical law and ethics, psychology, communications,
medical assisting administrative procedures and medical assisting clinical
procedures.
Five-Star Care
Betsy B. Currin Child Development Center Receives Highest Rating
The Betsy B. Currin Child
Development Center received
a Five Star rating, the highest
rating awarded in North Carolina. The one to five star rating
system was created by the North
Carolina Division of Child Development to evaluate child care
centers on components of quality,
staff education and program
standards.
“We are pleased to have
earned the five star certification,”
NCC Child Development Center
Director Lindsay Lee said. “Our
employees have worked hard to
reach this level of distinction. We
are very proud and we know that
the hard work must continue.”
All licensed child care programs must have a star rating.
One Star means the program
meets the state’s minimum
requirements and can legally operate. A Five Star license means
a program meets the voluntary
enhanced standards required for
the highest quality level.

Almonica Speight
Almonica Speight is a second year student at Nash Community College pursuing an Associate Degree in Culinary Arts “Like many of the
students at Nash Community College, my journey began as a displaced
worker laid off from my job. When I found out that Nash Community
College had a culinary program close to my home, I knew that it was
where I had to be. I was excited about being able to fulfill my passion for
cooking and still being able to be home with my family,” Almonica said.
“With my culinary degree from Nash Community College, I would like
to open a bakery. I know that I have a lot more to learn before making
that dream become a reality, but I also know that I am getting the best
tools to build a solid base to meet my goal.”
2011 Academic Excellence Award Recipient
Lauren Bradshaw
Lauren Bradshaw is a Nash Community College Associate in Arts (College Transfer) student. “My experience at Nash Community College has
been wonderful. All of my instructors have been enthusiastic and very
knowledgeable of their subject. Most importantly, my instructors are accessible. I know that if I need help, they are always there to help me. The
time that I have spent at Nash Community College has been very enjoyable. I look forward to the future time that I will spend at Nash Community College,” Lauren said. “In the future, I plan to attend a university and

Nash Community College Annual Report
From the Foundation President
With only thirty-five percent of students
eligible for federal aid, a significant number
of the over 3,000 students Nash Community College serves each semester are left
with little or no financial assistance. I chose
to serve on Nash Community College’s
Foundation board because I believe the
other sixty-five percent of deserving students should have an opportunity to receive
help with their educational needs as well.
At the 2011 Donor Appreciation Reception, stu Having attended Nash Community
dents shared with donors how Foundation scholarCollege (formerly Nash Technical Colships have enabled them to pursue their educalege) from 1981 through 1983, I realize the tional goals. From left: NCC Foundation President

career I enjoy today. The College helped
to plant the seeds of leadership for me to
become an entrepreneur.
Thank you for stepping up and caring about the future of those around you. Your
investment in this Foundation will make a difference in providing relevant higher educational opportunities for the people of our community.
Steven D. “Steve” Felton
NCC Foundation President
A Legacy of Caring
Did you know that opportunities exist to form a lasting
bond with Nash Community
College?
Your name and generosity
will always be remembered
when you make a planned
gift that will last beyond your
lifetime. In addition to the
satisfaction that comes from
investing in the future of our
community through the advancement of education, you
may realize significant tax and
real estate planning benefits
Bequests – Bequests are
the most popular type that
will reduce the size of your
taxable estate while helping a
worthy cause. A bequest may
include specific property, a
percentage of the estate, and/
or the remainder of the estate
after other bequests have been
fulfilled.
Life Insurance Policies –
Life insurance policies may
be given outright, dividends
may be assigned, or the NCC
Foundation may be listed as a
beneficiary of the policy.
Securities and Real Estate
– Gifts of appreciated securities, stock, or real estate can
be a very advantageous way of
giving to the NCC Foundation. If you have owned the
stock or property for more
than one year, you may deduct
the fair market value and
avoid all capital gain taxes.
