Mastercare’s first 5-Aside football tournament in Lincoln, over 20 teams turned out that year from all over the country and that set the tone for years to come, making the tournament an annual event. The following year in 2003 the event was to be more than just a 5-aside tournament, it became a family fun day, raffle and auction for all employees, family members and invited guests, this year over 50 teams entered and again people from all over the country attended. In 2000, Jo Ward gave birth to a beautiful baby daughter, Isabelle, sadly Isabelle was born with an incurable illness, Cystic Fibrosis. Neil Grainger colleague and friend of Jo decided to enlist the support of some very unlikely colleagues as models, to help raise money and awareness for this terrible illness, by doing a 2001 PCServiceCall (Lincoln) Calendar, with the photo’s taken by our very own Mr Sean Gray. On Saturday August 2nd 2004, we held a very similar event to the year previous and repeated the success, this time at Newark Showground, again around 50 teams turned out for the football. Dallas Flint not only posed for photos on the Calendar but also had her shoulder length hair shaved off to the scalp in front of a large warehouse audience – all in the name of charity, between the Calendar and Dallas volunteering to go bald, over £1700 was raised for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Later that month on August 30th Darren Hickman sadly passed away after suffering a Brain Haemorrhage just seven weeks before his 29th Birthday. The doctor explained that Darren had an old head injury that he most probably knew nothing about and that it was like a ticking time bomb that could have happened at any time and it was for this reason why future fund raising efforts were in aid of Headway, the brain injuries charity. In 2001, Neil Cook security guard, for Static Security working on the Lincoln Mastercare site, suggested to Darren Hickman that he ought to tap in to the massive infrastructure of DSGi and organise a company Football 5-aside competition. In May 2002, Darren and Dan Dolby hosted 1 2001 PCServiceCall (Lincoln) Calendar 2 Continued... The annual 5 aside football tournament continued thanks to Glen Holbrook insisting that Darren’s good work and effort should not be undone, Glen and Dan organised a further three 5-aside tournaments in 2005, 2006 and 2007, unfortunately due to venue availability and time constraints this years 5-aside never managed to come to fruition, however we do have plans for next year already so pop 27th June in your diary if you’re interested!! 2008 – We couldn’t let this year pass w i t h o u t m a k i n g t h e e ff o r t t o d o something special for charity. Tonight’s event is Natalie Holbrook’s brainchild, Nat wanted to do something more refined for a change and for The TechGuys to host a more female friendly event, as the auctions that we have held previously have been after family fun days or cycle rides and the items up for grabs haven’t always had the most appeal for females. We have had a massive response from people/companies donating items for the Raffle and Auction for tonight, also there are over 100 people here tonight attending, again thank you all for coming along and hope you thoroughly enjoy the night. Everyone at The TechGuys (Lincoln) would like to thank all the many different Companies, Attendees and Sponsors for all their involvement in the forementioned activities over the years because without your support none of this would have been possible. In May 2006 Dan Dolby and Leigh Dolby decided to undertake their life long cycling ambition of cycling the full length of the UK, from John O’groats to Lands End, Dan and Leigh took 10 days to cycle the 1008 miles, supported by a two man crew in a camper van, Dan Lowther and Mark Lancaster (aka Max & Paddy), the fund raising efforts of this feat raised in excess of £5000 which was shared between three charities, Headway, Cancer Research and Multiple Sclerosis Society. www.end2end2006.co.uk 3 What Next? When Dan and Leigh finished their Cycle marathon in 2006, Dan got off the saddle and said “never again” but Leigh said quite calmly “I’d do it again in fact I’d like to see how fast I could do it, I reckon if I took a more direct route and didn’t have Dan doing the map reading I could cycle John O’groats to Lands End in five days”. It would seem that the memories of saddle soreness have faded and Dan feels up to his dad’s challenge of seeing how quick he can complete a direct route of John O’groats to Lands End, the journey is roughly 900 miles without encountering motorways and will require an average of 180 miles cycling each day to complete the ride within 5 days, this would mean an average of 12 hours on the saddle each day, cycling at an average rate of 15mph, not too sure Glen is totally aware of the facts or quite how bad the saddle sores really were but he’s most keen to do the cycle ride with Dan and anyone else who would be willing or wanting to join them would be most welcome, providing they are mad enough! They are setting off for John O’groats Thursday May 21st 2009 www.end2end2009.co.uk On August 31st 2007, Leigh Dolby was tragically killed whilst he was out cycling, preparing for his next charity cycle challenge. The annual 5-aside will be held on Saturday 27th June 2009 And should tonight be a worthwhile success we will be looking to repeat the Auction night on Friday 26th June 2009, the evening prior to the Football. 4 About the chosen Charities www.childline.org.uk About ChildLine A service of the NSPCC Championing children for more than 18 years - View a timeline of ChildLine’s work since 1986 ChildLine is the UK’s free, 24-hour helpline for children in distress or danger. Trained volunteer counsellors comfort, advise and protect children and young people who may feel they have nowhere else to turn. Almost 1,400 volunteers provide a counselling service, supervised by a team of professional supervisors and managers. Every day our counsellors answer around 2,500 calls from children and young people looking for comfort, advice and protection. What do children call about? Children call ChildLine about a wide range of problems, but the most common problems are abuse (both sexual and physical), bullying, serious family tensions, worries about friends’ welfare and teenage pregnancy. How does ChildLine help? Since it was launched in 1986, ChildLine has saved children’s lives, found refuges for children in danger on the streets, and given hope to thousands of children who believed no one else cared for them. ChildLine has now counselled well over one million children and young people. ChildLine campaigns on behalf of children by relaying what they tell us to policy-makers who can help change children’s lives for the better. ChildLine also provides an outreach service to schools and youth groups through its CHIPS programme. ChildLine Registered charity no. 216401 (ChildLine is a service provided by the NSPCC) 5 About the chosen Charities www.mattdotcom.org.uk Education – Communication – Distraction 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 Matthew gets diagnosis of cancer Matthew comes up with idea of giving laptops to teenagers with cancer so they can carry on with their education. We started collecting money to purchase equipment, which we decide to lend rather than give. In November we lend first equipment out to two boys in Rotherham. During year 25 helped, Matthew dies in March and in August finally get charitable status. Further 16 helped and we continue to grow. Offer internet to teenagers. 12 more teenagers helped & 50th teenager helped. Our ISP goes bust so we move to wifi and supporting families with Broadband. 6 more, now helping 34 on an ongoing basis – with a stock of 38 machines. Stock rises to 48 machines – 40 out. All machines now come with wifi and webcam. Continue to work with teenagers with long term or terminal illnesses. Vista – achoo – bless you. We are working on a cure for vista. So far turned no-one down who meets criteria Regular requests from professionals in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, S&W Yorkshire, also helped teenagers from Lancashire, Warwickshire, Suffolk. Provided advice to families and professionals as far a field as Surrey, Somerset, Scotland, Hampshire. Every penny comes from people like you – examples being events like tonight’s. We have had support from around world with hits on website from all corners of the planet. Everyone who works with MattDotCom does so as a volunteer. Reason why teenagers have laptop: 1) to continue their education, 2) to enable them to stay in touch with peers, family etc via web, 3) can be used as a source of distraction during painful treatment. British Heart Foundation Registered charity no. 225971 8 Raffle & Auction Instructions Auction Raffle Tonight’s auction is going to be a ‘silent auction’, due to the fact that we have had so many generous donations we felt that it would be very difficult to fit 52 lotts in, in a verbal auction throughout the course of the evening. Tonight’s raffle is going to be done in the style of a lucky dip, therefore your ticket may be drawn out first but this doesn’t necessarily guarantee you the top prize of the short break to New York, when your name is called, you will be asked to come and draw an envelope from a separate pot (a bit like the Thunderball draw), each envelope is pre-sealed and have been mixed, so that no one knows who will win which prize. Around the room there are 52 clipboards, each clipboard represents a Lott, details of the specific Lott are at the top of each page on each clipboard, please use this brochure to identify the Lotts that you may be most keen to purchase, then visit the appropriate clipboard and write down your bid, listing your, On your table please find 50 Raffle tickets, these are for your table only, please do not swap them between tables, more tickets are available from Glen, Nat or Dan. Each ticket is £5 and tickets are only being sold to people here in this room tonight, so the winner of each and every prize will be here to draw and collect their prize. Around 10pm this evening we will be collecting in all the stubs from the sold tickets along with the money and the unsold tickets, the draw for the raffle will take place at approximately 10:45pm. Full Name Contact details Company if applicable Price your willing to pay at this point in the evening. The idea is then, that you should keep an eye on how the bids are performing on your chosen Lotts, with a view to continue bidding whilst the item(s) remain within your chosen price bracket. Some of the prizes/lotts aren’t present on the night due to their size, if you are the winner of such an item, a member of the organising team will be in touch early next week, to arrange delivery or collection. Around 10pm the clipboards will all be collected in and announcements will be made as to who the winning bidders are on each Lott. Most of the items are here this evening, so please feel free to take a look more closely. Cash and Cheques are accepted, however we would like to get away from accepting promises to pay post event, as this lends itself to additional work for the organising team. If you require any more details on how the auction or raffle is working this evening please don’t hesitate to ask Glen, Nat or Dan.
