1 “This Story,” Could Be YOUR Story. Let Me Explain…
Dear Friend –
On the back of this brochure is a photo of the actual “last play” that allowed the
Milan, Indiana Indians to win the 1954 Indiana High School Basketball
Championship. That play led to “The shot heard around the world” by Bobby
Plump, which led to the Academy Award nominated film, ESPN’s #1 sports
movie of all time… “Hoosiers” starring Gene Hackman, Barbara Hershey and the
late Dennis Hopper. (In the movie, Milan was called “Hickory” and Bobby Plump
was “Jimmy Chitwood.”)
This “David vs. Goliath” story has endured for over 56 years… but none of this
would have happened without the plan, drawn on the chalkboard by the 26-yearold Milan coach Marvin Woods.
You may have heard the expression that “small hinges can swing big doors.”
Well, it’s absolutely true. And just as that one simple play led to an award
winning movie… One breakthrough, one system, one idea, etc… may be all
that’s keeping you from having the dental practice of your dreams?
Let’s face it, 2009-2010 has been tough for dental practices nationwide. Even in
areas where dentists are doing well that success may not last long as large
companies close or relocate and our valued patients lose their jobs.
We can “sit back and take it,” and “put our heads in the sand”… or we can be
pro-active and learn the skills and strategies that will allow us to thrive despite
what’s going on around us.
At the “2011 Annual Spring Break Seminar” (The Seminar of Champions), we
have assembled a team of experts to ensure that your practice will succeed
despite the odds. Let us help you create YOUR dental success story!
PRESENTING OUR TEAM FOR DESTIN 2011…

Special Guest Speaker Bobby Plump (“Jimmy Chitwood”)
“The Shot Heard Around The World”
You may know Bobby Plump for his game-winning shot that put
a small town in Indiana on the map and inspired one of the
greatest sports stories of all time… “Hoosiers” (starring Gene
Hackman, Barbara Hershey and the late Dennis Hopper ). Come hear him
speak at our “Spring Break” Seminar as he shares his story of triumph over
incredible odds to not only win a championship, but how to win in life’s struggles.

All-ceramic restorations continue to make inroads in
the overall restorative market at the rate of about 12 percent a year. In 2000, approximately 20% of
restorations were all-ceramic and it has risen to 31%. Metal-free restorative
options include composites, pressed ceramics, and cementable all-ceramic
products.
Each of these metal-free options has a place in current esthetic restorative
dentistry and Dr. DiTolla will share what he thinks are the proper indications for
each of these materials. We certainly have seen failures (in the lab) when
dentists attempt to push these materials beyond their indications. There are still
3 several clinical situations that call exclusively for the use of PFM restorations but
that list of situations is shrinking.
Dr. DiTolla graduated with honors from the University of the Pacific School of
Dentistry. Dr. DiTolla is also a graduate of the Las Vegas Institute of Cosmetic
Dentistry and is a clinical evaluator for CRA. In 2001, he became Director of
Clinical Research and Education at Glidewell Labs, giving him an intimate
knowledge of American dentists and their crown and bridge habits. While writing
for several journals, Dr. DiTolla has a monthly column on restorative dentistry in
Dental Economics and is a contributing editor for Contemporary Esthetics and
Restorative Practice.
After completing this program, you will be able to:
•
Recognize the various treatment modalities available to help restore the
mouth in an esthetic manner
•
Be familiar with the use of more conservative all–ceramic restorations
such as no-prep and minimal prep porcelain veneers
•
Be familiar with zirconia oxide and the pros and cons of using this
structural ceramic material as a crown and bridge substructure
•
Be familiar with the new class of cementable all–ceramic restorations,
lithium disilicate, and understand how the CAD/CAM milling process can
improve consistency and quality
•
Learn how to use technology to be able to simply and predictably place
your own implants with a surgical guide
•
Learn the pros and cons of digital impression taking and see a
demonstration of each of the currently available systems
The object of this course is to teach you how you decide which of the nonmetal materials work best in various clinical situations.

“The $1M+ Mistakes I’ve Made In My Practice And What You
Can Learn From Them”
Mistakes I have made:
•
Not knowing what I didn’t know – especially how to put together and
manage a team (I was the worst manager of all time!)
•
Not having management and business experience and thinking that it
did NOT matter (I thought that learning it “on the job” would be
sufficient)
•
Thinking that concentrating on clinical skills would be enough to make
me successful (no amount of clinical proficiency makes up for too few
happy patients)
•
Not delegating $8/hour tasks to my team – allows me the time to
perform my highest paid skill – producing dentistry
•
Liking everyone, not being able to accurately assess the practical skills
of those around me (again, worst manager of all time!)
•
Not making financial arrangements with ALL patients led to many, many
problems
•
Not being able to market my practice to bring in the patients that most
wanted the dentistry we wanted to do
Here is what you will learn:
•
How my practice went from $279,000 in accounts receivable to less
than zero (Yes-LESS than zero)
•
How I went from working every waking moment to just 6 hours/week in
my practice and how you can do the same
•
How my team went from a whining bunch of “catty women” to a welloiled machine that understands our business and propels us forward
•
How I learned to market my practice to bring in the type of patient that
truly values the quality of dentistry we provide
•
How my husband and family became a joy, rather than an obligation or
just another “job”
5 •
•
•
•
How to end the frustration of “the patients that have the most problems
and have the least amount of money to spend on their care”
How to get patients the care they need, regardless of their insurance
coverage or their bank account balance
How to find personal balance and actually enjoy life
How our practice entered the information age and automated tasks to
save a ton of money and get more done
The objective of this course is to help dentists with the day-to-day hassles
of running their practice. The information comes from up-to-date, realworld, real time experience and not on the basis of the “theory” that runs
amuck in dentistry.

others to turn their potential into production. His popular media appearances
include Fox News, First Business, KTLA, magazines, newspaper articles, and
many radio interviews.
In this course, you will learn:
•
The No. 1 area in which 9 out of 10 dentists are unnecessarily ”leaking”
thousands of dollars
•
How to invest one hour and increase cash flow thousands of
dollars/year without having to do more work, hire more people or
monitor anything
•
How to avoid being among the 96-plus percent of dentists who are not
able to retire at age 65
•
How to make passion and purpose profitable and practical
•
Real take home tips and strategies to immediately improve your
financial position
In this course, you will find where you are losing 10 percent (or more) of
your personal income, what to do to increase your cash flow and put six
figures more in your pocket over the next two years.

“Drilling The Implant Hole Is Nothing”
There is more to implant dentistry than just drilling holes. You
want to “skim the cream from the top” and do the easy cases.
My graduate students place hundreds of implants each year.
For multi-implant cases, we use computer generated drilling
guides using a cone beam radiograph that eliminates guess work, problems and
phone calls. Single implants rarely need a cone beam and are placed using pilots
holes and guide pins.
Dr. Elledge practices general dentistry in Belton, MO. He directs a general
practice residency program at UMKC. He is a graduate of UMKC School of
Dentistry and earned his MS in prosthodontics at the University of Minnesota.
Here is some of what you will learn:
•
The MOST productive days and silent nights
•
Why radiographic guides are everything
•
Moorism’s - What “The Professor” taught me
•
How to preserve sockets, place implants and restore teeth and arches
•
How to avoid complications
This course teaches how general dentists can make the difficult transition
into implant dentistry practical and exciting.
Hugh Doherty, DDS
“Mastering The Business Of A Successful Hygiene
System”
The Hygiene System is viewed by many doctors as an
undervalued resource, and in business terms, best described
as a “loss leader.” What does it take to have a highly
successful hygiene practice? Unfortunately, most dentists fail to recognize that
they can build a substantial practice if they utilize their hygienists properly. This
would consist of empowering the hygienist to recognize problems, educating
patients about the nature of those problems and pointing out the consequences
that will follow if those problems are not treated.
Dr. Doherty is a Certified Financial Planner, national lecturer, author and an
advisor to the dental profession with over 30,000 hours consulting with doctors
across the United States. He is widely respected for providing and sharing some
of the best information on management and finance. His varied background in
the field of dentistry, as CEO of Doctor’s Financial Network and his years of
research and study at Harvard University Graduate School of Business and the
College of Financial Planning, makes him uniquely qualified to educate doctors in
all aspects of the business and financial world.

“Hot Topics In Aesthetic And Restorative Dentistry”
Optimizing Success Through Materials Choice, Proper
Diagnosis And Planning
For the past decade, the search for invisible, beautiful dentistry
has been the goal of both clinicians and manufacturers.
Coupled with the public’s quest for ideal aesthetics and a youthful, white smile,
the journey has become more difficult. More difficult because our patients are
more demanding for perfection today (than ever before) and more confusing
because of the vast array of new materials and options available to provide this
care.
The astute clinician, if he or she desires not only to provide beautiful aesthetics,
but also for the aesthetics to function long term, must be willing to take the steps
necessary to understand the advantages, disadvantages, indications and
contraindications of the new materials. Without this knowledge, the quality of
care delivered will be compromised.
Join Dr. Hornbrook as he explores our options for aesthetic, metal-free dentistry
for patients in applications including smile design, posterior restorative, bridge
applications and full mouth rehabilitation. Discussion will include updates of
dentinal adhesion, ideal cementation of the new materials using the new resin
cements and addressing the role function plays in our decision making. This
truly is the “Platinum Age” of dentistry and the potential for what we can offer our
patients, both aesthetically and functionally, is more exciting and rewarding than
ever before.
Dr. Hornbrook graduated from UCLA School of Dentistry and currently practices
in San Diego, CA. He has consulted with numerous manufacturers in product
development and refinement and is on the editorial board of Practical Procedures
& Aesthetic Dentistry, Contemporary Esthetics, Signature, and is the past editor
of the Journal of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He has lectured
8 internationally on all facets of esthetic dentistry and has published articles in all of
the leading dental journals.
Objectives and subjects covered will include:
•
Understanding the advantages of the new ceramics ideal for smile
designs
•
The use of lasers to enhance the aesthetic result, including “ClosedFlap” osseous crown lengthening
•
Deciphering what, when and how the “prepless” veneer case can be
successful
•
Learning how to choose the correct cements for different materials that
enhance aesthetics and long term success
•
Understanding how we can be metal-free, even with posterior bridges
•
Eliminating the need for traditional core build-ups in the posterior when
using “bonded” ceramics
The object of this course is to inform participants about all the new ceramic
restorations, using lasers for aesthetics and everything else clinicians
need to know in the “Platinum Age” of dentistry.

“Shine The Light And They Will Come – Patient Treatment
Acceptance And Laser Assisted Hygiene”
There has never been a better opportunity than now in treating
the earliest stages of periodontal infection through the
incorporation of laser technology. This program is designed to
expand your laser practice model as we explore the vast potential of laser
hygiene protocols. The never ending flow of information pointing to the oral
systemic relationship has led to the need for increased diagnostic interpretive
skills, patient communication and the establishment of sustainable therapeutic
goals that meet the demands of longevity and quality of life. In this program we
will discuss the adjunctive use of laser as an essential element in periodontal
therapy and for optimum recall management. Join in as we explore the value of
laser assisted hygiene not only in its relationship to healing at the biologic and
molecular level of repair and recovery, but the patient’s perception and
expectations of the laser in their overall treatment acceptance.
Janet Press, RDH, Fellow of the Academy of Laser Dentistry, has been in
specialty and general practice for 35 years with 15 years of clinical experience in
soft tissue lasers. She holds Standard Proficiency in both Diode and Nd:YAG
lasers and has served on the ALD Regulatory Affairs, Scientific Sessions and
Auxiliary Committees. As Co-Director of the Dynamic Team and Laser
Certification Programs, Janet was an integral faculty member at the Las Vegas
Institute for Advanced Dental studies (LVI) for more than nine years. She
currently lectures and conducts clinical education programs internationally.
In this program you will:
•
Understand the adjunctive use of laser in periodontal therapy and recall
risk management
9 •
•
•
•
•
Learn the protocol for doctor and/or hygienist approach to laser assisted
bacterial reduction in periodontal therapy
Discuss the healing effect of the diode laser through disinfection and
bio-stimulation
Learn how laser bacterial reduction meets the “new” standard in treating
both biofilm infection and the host immune-inflammatory side of the
periodontal infections
Interpret laser tissue interaction with its correlation to “warm laser”
energy settings and the techniques used to obtain optimum clinical
results in hygiene therapeutics
Make clinical decisions and apply laser protocols that increase
productivity through guaranteed patient treatment acceptance
This presentation will explore the value and benefit of hygiene assisted
laser therapy as you travel this path of discovery that will expand your
practice profitability and take you to new levels of patient health and
wellness as we meet the demands of oral and systemic health in the 21st
century.

A Dental Assistant For The 21 Century
One of the greatest assets in today’s field of dentistry is a dental
assistant of the 21st Century. Today’s assistant requires
leadership, knowledge in dental science and in state-of- the-art
technology, with exceptional communication skills. In today’s highly competitive
and fast-paced dental office, one of the most important responsibilities of the
clinical assisting team is the “pre-heating” of the patient for our doctors. To be
successful at motivating patients to be open to, and ultimately, to agree to the
dentist’s treatment plan, requires an arsenal of talents that may not come
naturally or without thoughtful preparation.
Tina Calloway, CDA has worked in dentistry for 14 years as a full time dental
assistant, served as President of the Piedmont Dental Assistant Society and is a
clinical assisting consultant. Tina, a professional speaker and workshop leader,
has been a guest lecturer at dental conferences around the country.
In this fun and interactive workshop, Tina will motivate and educate those who
wish to become today’s High-Tech, High-Touch assistants of the 21st Century.
This workshop will allow the clinical assistant to have hands on experience with
three of dentistry's latest technologies, such as, the Isolite, Diagnodent and the
intra-oral camera, which are applicable to the assistant in his/her everyday
procedures, allowing them to contribute to the practice’s profitability.
In this workshop we will address these main objectives:
•
How to become the most valuable player on the team
•
How to “pre-heat” the patient for your dentist
•
Learn to apply and use state-of-the-art technology and verbal skills to
the benefit of the patient and practice
•
Discover learning, sharing and networking with fellow assistants
10 The objective of this course is to teach assistants how to use high-tech
equipment and then use these skills to contribute to the success of the
practice.
This class has limited seating and requires pre-registration and we
encourage you to register early to ensure a seat.

“Think Outside the Mouth! Botox® And Dermal Fillers For
Every Dental Practice”
Only a relatively small number of dentists were among the
health-care providers who performed over 10 million
Botox®/dermal filler procedures in the United States last year.
Fortunately, that number will increase exponentially over the next few years and
for good reasons. The dental professional blends the most knowledge of the
head and neck as well as skill with using a syringe. Along with experience and
appreciation for facial esthetics, the dentist can do something that no other
cosmetic professional outside dentistry can do – treat the teeth and gum tissue.
For these reasons, cosmetic dentistry is making way for Total Facial Esthetics.
In the past, cosmetic dentists have been working with one hand tied behind their
back, trying to enhance smiles while working with only the intraoral hard and soft
tissues. But the smile is much more than teeth and gum tissue. It involves the
12 lips, cheeks, chin, and yes, even the neck and upper third of the face. Botox®
and dermal fillers have proven to be a safe and effective method of making skin
look younger, lips more enticing and the overall smile more appealing.
It’s time to think outside the mouth and explore the potential that Total Facial
Esthetics has for your practice. Anthony S. Feck, DMD, brings a background of
expertise as a recognized authority on topics that range from anesthesia and
facial esthetics to practice management. Dr. Feck is also an international
speaker, noted author and educator, private practitioner and Diplomat of the
American Academy of Facial Esthetics. Dr. Feck is a crucial lecturer for every
dentist passionate about their profession.
After this course, you will be able to:
•
List three compelling reasons why dentists should be providing Botox®
and dermal filler services to their patients
•
Describe the pharmacodynamics of Botox®
•
Name the muscles and their actions that apply to the most common
applications of Botox® in the head and neck region
•
Discuss the technique for administering Botox® for the most common
applications in the head and neck region
•
Name the three most common applications of hyaluronic acid fillers
•
Describe the technique for administering dermal fillers for the most
common applications
In this course you will learn about changes that occur in skin as it ages and
the most successful methods of building a Total Facial Esthetic practice.

21 Remember, at the “20th Annual Spring Break Seminar”…
1.
You will NOT be squeezed into one large room like a herd of cattle.
Sandestin is a World-Class Resort and “our guests” will be “treated like
royalty” in every way.
2. You will experience 20 of the best speakers in dentistry, business and
entertainment in the three-day event.
3. You can earn up to 18 hours of CE credit (more hours than available at
similar events).
4. Experience the best exhibitor venue in dentistry. We don’t just sell
exhibit space… we carefully select vendors with a proven track record
of serving/helping dentists.
5. Edutainment? In 1992 we were the FIRST dental group to develop the
concept of education plus entertainment (4 years before anyone else!).
6. “Monday morning ideas… not sales pitches.” Don’t you just hate it
when you spend your hard earned money and then get a speakers mini
presentation which is actually a “pitch” for their full day course, institute
or center? At Destin, our speakers will cut the “fluff” and give you solid
information that will add to your bottom line.
7. Networking. At Destin you’ll have the opportunity to mingle with some
of the most successful dentists in the world If you are looking for a
“party seminar” this MAY not be for you… although things do get
CRAZY in Baytowne!
8. DVDs – unlike similar events, we videotape every speaker and
workshop. This is a HUGE advantage over hearing the speakers one
time.
9. All inclusive package. Don’t be mis-led by low seminar pricing that
doesn’t include things like lunch, speaker handouts, etc.
10. Excellence in Dentistry, Inc. is an A+ rated company by the Better
Business Bureau. We were the first privately owned company to
present mega-dental seminars and our goal is to provide you and your
team the best customer service and the ULTIMATE seminar
experience… every time!

speakers covering every subject imaginable for all the staff. It’s a must if
you are a dental group looking to move to the next level. “
Dr. Johnson, Annandale, VA
“Having attended many dental seminars, both on a national and state
meeting level, I can say with enthusiasm that this has been the most fun,
informative seminar yet. I’m confident that I’ve gotten my money’s worth
and then some. Thank you for providing speakers that make a real
difference in our dental practices and in our lives!”
Dr. Lester, Birmingham, AL
“After multiple visits to Excellence in Dentistry I am still excited to get
rejuvenated with enthusiasm. I’ve practiced dentistry over 30 years and
attended much continuing education and you still come up with new ideas
and motivations to keep me in dentistry.”
