REPORT on ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS (RYLA) Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Sarawak Campus ROTARY CLUB OF BINTULU Introduction Rotary Club of Bintulu (RCB, the Club) decided to organize Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) in October 2011 after been mooted by our Charted President PDG Abang Hj. Nawawi Abang Drahman to consider organizing the RYLA in Bintulu. Rotary Club of Bintulu Central (RCBC) was also been invited to be part of the committee. The Club decided to organize the RYLA in Sarawak on 10th – 12th March 2012 and Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Sarawak Campus (UPMBC) had agreed to host the RYLA Camp.After a brain storming session the Club decided on Responsible Youth as the RYLA theme as we believe leadership comes with responsibility. In two different occasions the RYLA was promoted in the local newspaper to attract and encourage students from Sarawak to participant (Figure 1). Figure 1: Newspaper cutting on the RYLA program 1 Program The RYLA at UPMBC was a three days two night event. The first activities included Opening Ceremony and two team building activities while six activities were organized in the second day. The last day two other activities were arranged including the Closing Ceremony. The Club was very fortunate as our District Governor Hj. Zainie Abdul Aucasa came to officiate the RYLA Opening Ceremony on 10th March 2012. He was very happy to see so many youth from all over Sarawak taking part in this RYLA. He also included a few photos of the Opening Ceremony in the Governor’s Newsletter: Rotary Voices 3310, Issue No. 9, March 2012. The Organizing Chairman, PE Peter Voon Boon Teck and the President of RCB, Dr. Ong Kian Huat also deliver their speeches. Among other they thanked Guest of Honor, DG Hj. Zainie Abdul Aucasa and his spouse, UPMBC for allowing the RYLA to be hosted in their campus and giving discounted rate for accommodation, Yayasan Kelab Kelab Rotary Malaysia (ROTAFOM) and Rotarian Noel Yek Nae Shiuan for their financial support, facilitators, and individuals that have helped to support this RYLA. Figure 2: Group photos after the Opening Ceremony 2 Figure 3: Newspaper cutting on the Opening Ceremony Ice Breaking was organized and conducted by a facilitator, Mr. Muhammad Abdul Rahim Habib from UPMBC in the afternoon to help a group of people to begin the process of forming themselves into a team as the first activity. The first day activity finished with an activity conducted by Rotarian Joshua Samuel Konrad from RCB and President Allen Wong Ching Seng from RCBC on Knowing Me, Knowing You. The participants were briefed on activities of both clubs over the years and they later presented a project related to their community need. 3 Figure 4: Participants taking part in the Ice Breaking The second day started with Morning Exercise conducted by Past President Billy Young Kah Lai from RCB and assisted by members of Bintulu Diabetes Association. Rotarian Rachel Diaz from RCBC started the morning session on Enhancing Your Communication Skills. A few team building activities gauged towards improving communication were arranged. An outdoor activity, Creativity and Problem Solving was conducted by President Dr. Ong Kian Huat and OC PE Peter Voon Boon Teck. Participants needed to be creative to solve the problems posted in the field. Figure 5: Participants taking part in the Creativity and Problem Solving All the participants have enjoyable moment with Mr. Fakhzan Buang from UPMBC on Man in the Mirror. Image and appearance are very important when in the public, this activity allows participants to demonstrate their view and creativity on dress up. Rotarian Dave Kuan Ming Howe from RCBC informed participants on the important attributes in dealing with others in Business Acumen Skills. The second day ended with Foot Loose conducted by PP James Kator Supeh from RCBC and PP Bong Fatt Ming from RCB. All teams and individual participants were asked to perform. On the third day, PP Patrick Panai from Rotary Club of Kuching Jaya conducted We are the World. The activity helped participants to have a practical outlook for things happening in their surroundings. Before the Closing Ceremony, Rotarians Joshua Samuel Konrad summarized the lesson learned by the participants. The Closing Ceremony was officiated by the Resident of Bintulu, Hj. Muhamad Yakup Kari. 4 Figure 6: Newspaper cutting on the Closing Ceremony Participants The RYLA in Sarawak managed to attract 80 participants from Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri. These participants were from 14 different schools. There were also 6 teacher in charge involve in this RYLA. Expenditure The total expenditure of this RYLA is RM16,511.60.
