We are giving 100% support to this running sports event as it is not only beneficial to the town but also acts as an event where people from all walks of life and of all ages can run together. As some of you might have known, we are a small, quiet fishing town by the Kemena River mouth over 30 years ago. But now, Bintulu is bustling with oil and gas industries at Tanjung Kidurong where ocean-going LNG and other vessels docked or lay-in waiting offshore to call at the Bintulu deep water port. Coupled with the development of energy-intensive industries in the last five years at Samalaju about 60km away, Bintulu is expanding by leaps and bounds. Its commercial, residential and industrial areas have expanded, bringing the population to over 230,000 now. As can be seen from the four running routes, superimposed on the satellite images, Bintulu is blessed with river and sea shore scenery. We have hills and rocky beaches right at the coastal areas. We have shopping complexes, new condominiums and offices. Besides, iconic buildings like the hilltop location of Wisma Bintulu, housing the BDA Headquarters. We also have Tumbina, the wild life park (from the Malay words of Tumbuhan/Binatang, meaning flora and fauna of Borneo), and Dewan Suarah, literally meant the hall where people comes from all directions to meet, are also found along these routes. It is, therefore, timely that BDA hosts international events like the just concluded 10th Borneo International Kite Festival and now, we are going to have the first ever Sarawak Marathon 2015 @ Bintulu. This is consistent with the aspiration of making Bintulu a friendly, industrial city in five years’ time. Running is a popular sport. According to the latest report, as many as 40% of Malaysians are obese, making it the highest in the ASEAN Region. The need to be engaged in some sports activity to make us healthy does not need re-emphasis. The opportunity to train and run is now provided by BDA as one of the key supporters of this international event. The saying that we must “take food as medicine. Otherwise, medicine is your food” holds true besides being engaged a few hours in sports, at least, three times a week. In addition, as the populace of Bintulu comes from all over the places, this sports event acts as an activity for all to mingle and create a social network towards a better Bintulu. Malaysia will be holding the chair of ASEAN in 2015. Bintulu in central Sarawak and Borneo, being the biggest island in the heart of the ASEAN Region is geographically central. The Sarawak Marathon Bintulu 2015 will be promoted in the ASEAN capitals. With the open skies policy, we may be able to attract chartered flights direct from the ASEAN capitals to allow runners to have direct access to run in Bintulu. Definitely, this marathon is a sports tourism event that has a big potential to build awareness and interest towards Bintulu. Hence, inter-ASEAN tourism is being promoted. We wish you all have a good run, and not forget to visit some of the attractions around Bintulu. 3 Getting Ready RACE PACK COLLECTION Race Pack Collection Date & Time Friday, 20th March 2015, 7am – 9pm Saturday, 21st March 2015, 7am – 9pm Race Pack Collection Venue Arriving by Air: Bintulu Airport - Sarawak Marathon 2015 Bintulu Hospitality Desk Arriving by Land/Local: Outdoor Stage, Farley Mini Market Bintulu (next to Bintulu Sentral) Document needed: Self-collection: ID card/Passport and print out of online sign-up email confirmation Collect for friends: ID card/passport for collector, photocopied ID card/passport and print out of online sign-up email confirmation Singlet’s Measurement Men Running Singlet Size Specification No. Description/Size (cm) S M L XL 2XL 3XL 1 Chest 94 98 102 106 110 114 2 Body Length 62.8 64.9 67 69.1 71.2 73.3 3 Shoulder 32.5 34 35.5 37 38.5 40 **Running Singlet will be given to all runners: (1) Full Marathon (2) Half Marathon (3) 10km Open (4) 5km Fun Run 4 Getting Ready Women Running Singlet Size Specification No. Description/Size (cm) S M L XL 2XL 3XL 1 Chest 84 88 92 96 100 104 2 Body Length 54.4 56.5 58.6 60.7 62.8 64.9 3 Shoulder 26.8 28.3 29.8 31.3 32.8 34.3 **Running Singlet will be given to all runners: (1) Full Marathon (2) Half Marathon (3) 10km Open (4) 5km Fun Run RUNNING NUMBER A – Full Marathon Men Open B – Full Marathon Women Open C – Half Marathon Men Open D – Half Marathon Women Open E - 10km Men Open F - 10km Women Open G - 5km Men Open H - 5km Women Open Running number will be distributed through race pack. 5 Getting There GETTING TO BINTULU Among Airlines operating in Bintulu are AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and MASwings.
